A mix

The quality of these stories varies, as is usual with collections. The narration is passable. None is outstanding except the Naval Treaty, which is found in Sherlock Holmes collections. Still, I recommend the collection to those who can't get enough of classically written mysteries. For those who just want a good read, probably not.

Getting better

The stories are still great, the readers not so. However, some of the readers are more capable, the better ones try and stay away from pretend British accents, I don't know where they come from but listening to the attempts gives a new meaning to a plum in the mouth accent. A better effort, much easier on the ears, some attempt to give understanding and characterisation to the stories

The Prospector's Friend

Content only:The lonely prospector with his faihthful companion, the lowly burro, receives the respect and admiration they so richly deserve in this novelette. The character of Tappan is your usual grizzled, haunted by the past, type; but his faithfulness and loyalty to his beloved partner more than makes up for the sterotype. Jenet, the burro, has a most prominent role in the story, and this story is as good as the ones ZG wrote about the lion dog, Don, or the wild stallion Wildfire. This is perhaps the best short story he ever wrote, and has been reprinted many times since its initial appearance in the Ladies' Home Journal in 1923. It was the title story of a book which came out the same year with added stories. I recommend this book most highly.

Great Stories - Akward Recording

The short stories are well read and written. They are enjoyable. The low rating comes from the recording itself. There are no division markers between the three stories, which can be a bit confusing. If you are listening to there stories for the first time, it is hard to determine where one ends and another begins. Otherwise, I throughly enjoyed Fitzgerald's work.

Light and fun reading

I am a huge Dylan Thomas fan and have been searching for a nice book of his short-stories for some light reading. This book is the perfect size for an afternoon in the park or a middle-of-the-workday break. Itâs around 150 pages and paperback, so itâs lightweight and easy to take on the go. Thomasâ poetry is definitely interesting and insightful into the mind of a British poet in the early 20th century. He writes of his childhood memories, mesmerizing tales of love and loss, as well as some funny anecdotes of boyhood adventures. A great purchase for anyone looking to get into Thomasâ works.

Short stories full of imagination for your enjoyment

Here is your chance to fall in love with Thomas' writing. Short stories, full of imagination and taken from his own life experience including childhood. A great tutor to prepare the reader for the more challenging Dylan Thomas poems. Forget about his tumultuous life, just read his stuff, over and over again, aloud. And then go to Wales and visit the places he lived and wrote.

Dylan Thomas was a great writer, but frankly

Dylan Thomas was a great writer, but frankly, a much, much better poet. Here, in this book, the short stories seem to have been written in a rush, without a second revision or editing, which was much needed. If you are truly devoted to D. Thomas, buy the book, otherwise, let it pass. It is also a true shame that his alcoholism prevented him from achieving higher dimension in the literary world. What a waste!

Heartbreakingly beautiful prose.

Heartbreakingly beautiful prose by a great poet. I found the youthful exuberance and frolic of the childhood stories to be infectious. At the same time, there is error and cruelty, humiliation, emotion and sadness. The young adult stories take on a darker quality and are increasingly self-aware of the sadness that underlies all of us just beneath the facade. The description of living conditions of early 20th century Wales is hair raising.

Egotism Unleashed

While Dylan Thomas commands accolades for his poetry, I found his prose to be murky and confusing. I was expecting so much more.

Too many hard words

My 6 year old read this today. She is a very competent reader for her age, usually reading books aimed at 8-10 year olds, but I found there were too many big and complicate words in this book, even though the general pitch was fine for her. She has no problem reading any word that would come up in speech, but words like 'hankered', 'dissed', 'subsequent', 'provocatively' and all the complicated people and place names really slowed her down.

With that said, she really enjoyed the overall story.

Enjoyed

streep is beautiful

meryl streep reads the story of "The Enormous Radio" with beauty and elegance. I keep listening to it over and over...the other story, "The Swimmer" that is read by Cheever isn't as good..the writing is beautiful ..the story teller should have left this one for Ms. Streep to read/act. He just reads it.

Cheever's readings beat all

Although the recordings by latter day folks are well done, there is nothing to compare with Cheever's own voice. His cadence and inflection illuminate the material in the light of his time and place; therefore, they are a window into his, well, time and place.

I am very pleased with this product

I ordered this product for my girl friend's niece. She is enjoying it very much, listening to it from my computer. I downloaded the enhanced audio version. The sound quality is excellent. However, I would only recommend this product for a child who already speaks Spanish fluently. This is not a product to teach your English speaking child how to speak Spanish.
