For my guinea pig-loving granddaughter--she loves these books!

A Gripping Adventure, With A Few Laughs, for Your Early Reader

This book is great fun. Coco and Fuzzy, (who are guinea pigs), talk, scheme, adventure, surf the internet, and exchange dry and pithy bon mots. Fuzzy is tech savvy; Coco is a bit posh because she once belonged to the Queen. What's not to love? It's as though a slightly smarter Bertie Wooster and Jeeves ate mostly lettuce and lived in a hutch in your bedroom. (Anyway, when I read that the two visited a social networking site called "Micespace" I knew I was going to like this author.)

In this episode of the Coco and Fuzzy series, (number two of at least four "Guinea Pigs Online" books), the two guinea pigs are deposited at Furry Towers, a supposedly elegant pet hotel, while their owners go out of town. Furry Towers is a dump and a front for shady dealings, and Coco, Fuzzy and their fellow prisoners have to plan a break out. The story partly runs as a goof on the movie "The Great Escape", which is pretty sly for a kid's book.

A number of interesting secondary characters complement our two heroes. My favorite was Edouardo the macho Andean Agouti guinea pig, who lives in the thicket behind the yard and harasses the foxes. There are a few regulars from book to book and then a few guest characters in each individual book so there is a lot of variety. And these characters have well defined, engaging and individual presences, which is sort of amazing for an early reader book, when you think about it.

The writing is very accomplished. There is never a hint of condescension, and the author clearly has a lot of respect for her kid readers. The descriptions and the plotting are neither too thin nor belabored, so that the story moves along at a nice pace but never loses the reader. The whole thing feels light and airy, but there is a lot of craft at work under the surface. As Coco might say, "One appreciates the effort".

It seems this would be a fun read-to; I can imagine hamming it up a bit, using different voices for the two heroes as I read this out loud. It would also work as an independent read, as it seems that it would be quite manageable, (maybe with a little help here and there), for the target interest/reading level young readers.

So, a nice find that adds some gentle good humor to the early reader category, and introduces two very amiable and appealing heroes. Worth a close look for sure. (Please note, while I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

This is a wonderful children's book. I really liked the educational information in the back

of the book also. Would highly recommend

This book is a very nice 'gentle' reminder to care for not only your own ...

Very charming nature Christmas book. Don't know if it's a true story or not...but written as if it was or 'could' be. A little boy and his Grandpa is watching a blizzard come in. The little boy worries about the little tree that they planted wondering if it will be strong enough to endure. Then he sees a cardinal (a bird that usually they don't see in his area) fly and drop to the ground. He goes out in the deep snow and very cold to rescue the bird. They nurture the bird until they allow him to go again. Years later every year that same tree has grown full grown and it is full of cardinals! This book is a very nice 'gentle' reminder to care for not only your own human family during the holidays and winter but to take care of the animals around you and in turn they will remember that for years to come. In the back of this book are information to care for an orphaned bird, crafts etc. Nicely done book

Vlahakis. Andrea. Christmas Eve Blizzard. Illustrated by Emanuel (Manny) Schongut. Mt. Pleasant, SC. Sylvan Dell Publishing. 2005. Hardback. $15.95. ISBN 10:0-9764943-3-7 Ages Pre-school-Grade 2

Nick and his grandfather are concerned about a young apple tree they planted only seven months ago. Can it survive the blizzard?

As Nick watches the snow swirling furiously, he bundles up and goes out to rescue a brilliant red bird that has tumbled out of the tree into a snow drift. Grandpa recognizes the cardinal, but says it is rarely seen in his area, especially at this time of year.

Grandfather and grandson work together to build a cage. When the cardinal recovers, they set it free. All winter Nick watches for the cardinal, but it does not return.

After Nick grows up a strange incident occurs. People come from all around to see what they perceive of as the apple tree that is filled with apples in the winter. As they come closer they realize it is not apples. Every Christmas the apple tree is filled with cardinals.

At the end of Christmas Eve Blizzard are five pages for teaching children. In a section titled, "For Creative Minds" environmental information abounds. Included are "Teaching Trivia," making bird feeders, even how to care for an injured bird. An especially easy, but interesting project is peanut butter on pine cones hung in trees to feed birds in winter.

This is Andrea's first picture book. Most of her work is about nature. As a child she rescued a bird during a blizzard.

¡La mágica y eterna historia de "La Sirenita" contada en rimas para deleite de los chicos!

¡Las hermosas ilustraciones se podrán encontrar en el interior del libro! ¡Disfrute de la lectura!

Había una vez una princesa que vivía en el mar;

una sirena más bella de lo que se podía imaginar.

Sirenetta era la hija menor del rey del océano;

el reino amaba escucharla cantar desde temprano.

Mientras ella gozaba, nadaba y jugaba en la ola;

el mar engendró una muy poderosa ventola.

Una tormenta se formó y un barco se hundía;

Y ella vio que la vida de un hombre peligro corría.

Ella lo llevó a tierra firme y tomó su mano;

nunca antes había estado con un humano.

Justo cuando estaba el ahogado por abrir sus ojos;

Sirenetta escuchó los lamentos de otros.

Ella nadó de vuelta al reino en el mar;

pues de un humano no se podía enamorar.

Salvó a un príncipe pero ella no lo sabía;

La bruja convirtió a la sirenita en ser humano;

pero le dolía caminar luego de salir del océano.

Además perdió su bella voz con la transformación;

pero estar siempre con el príncipe fue su decisión.

Por la magia de la bruja ella fue encontrada;

por el príncipe que la vió en el suelo acostada.

Le preguntó su nombre pero ella no pudo hablar,

lucía adorable e inocente fue lo que pudo notar.

Made me smile! :-)

Book did a great job following the original story line and illustrations were well done. Author set the book to rhyme which was a challenge in and of itself to maintain the original story, tho rhythm was a bit off since sentances weren't always of the same length. A very good book overall and I do look forward to reading "Snow White" by the same author next!

My Bestest Princess Fairy Tale retold with a rhyme â

I am 9 years old and liked this book because Cinderella is one of my favorite princess fairy tales and because this book rhymes it makes the story so much more fun to read. The pictures are sooooo cute and the story teaches you something important about not being jelly and to be happy with things. Itâs a cool book and I canât wait to read all the rhyming fairy tales over my school break. =(^.^)=

An Animal Genre classic!

What did you love best about Little Grey Rabbit's Story Treasury?

It's animal genre, and a very imaginative story of animal country life in the olden days. I couldn't help comparing Grey Rabbit to the Cinderella Rabbit from Alison Uttley's Little Red Fox and Cinderella. She's such a sweet natured, hard worker.

What other book might you compare Little Grey Rabbit's Story Treasury to and why?

Any of Beatrix Potter's tales, and of course Alison Uttley's Little Red Fox stories. Animals behaving like people, rural settings, and olden times.

What does Elaine Claxton bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Elaine Claxton has a pleasant and soothing voice. She capably does a variety of voices for the characters. Even her singing is top notch. I love hearing her voice for Little Grey Rabbit.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, even the Christmas story even though it's February--Valentine's day even.

Any additional comments?

Please add Alison Uttley's Little Red Fox stories to the audible collection too.

Another Rollicking Adventure, With A Few Laughs and Thrills

Coco and Fuzzy, (who are guinea pigs), talk, scheme, adventure, surf the internet, and exchange deadpan humorous observations. Fuzzy is tech savvy and very practical; Coco is a bit posh because she once belonged to the Queen.

In this episode of the Coco and Fuzzy series, (number four of at least five "Guinea Pigs Online" books), the two guinea pigs become involved in a story with a lot of different angles. It's Christmas in Strawberry Park and the two are looking forward to a traditional holiday with their owners. Then a certain matter involving lost Inca gold intrudes and the whole gang ends up traveling to Peru. NO SPOILERS HERE, but we end up trekking, skiing, flying, escaping, rescuing and generally having a high speed non-stop adventure. More than the other books, which tend to have milder plots, this one is heavily action oriented.

A number of interesting secondary characters complement our two heroes. My favorite is Edouardo the macho Andean Agouti guinea pig, who lives in the thicket behind the yard and harasses the foxes. He is featured in this book, which suited me fine. There are a few other regulars from book to book and then a few guest characters in each individual book so there is a lot of variety. A beautiful book for children.

I don't usually read children's books, but took a chance on this book by Billy Garrett. I was enchanted by the characters that seemed so human-like in nature. Go on an adventure with Tumkit, a baby rabbit, and the rest of the group of animals that help each other discover strengths and limitations in their lives. Just like in our own lives. You can't help but fall in love with Tumkit as he adventures out of his home to a whole new world of excitement and danger. I recommend this book for children up to 12. You can buy it and read it to the younger ones.

Adorable Story and Amazing Message

My daughter, who is 10 and a very avid reader, absolutely loved this book because of all of the adventures with the characters and the story of the rabbit (Tumkit) overcoming obstacles found in the forest. This book embodies courage, teamwork, friendship and love. My daughter could not stop reading this beautiful book and I loved the life lessons and entertainment it provided to her. Great message!!

Inspiring!!

A friend of mine told me about this great read for kids and I had to check it out for my son. I was hooked from the start with the beautiful visual picture Garrett paints readers in this story of the runt overcoming all obstacles. We enjoyed reading the adventure together and will definitely read it again and again. Definitely recommend to everyone young and old!!

Love everything about this book!

This book was ordered by my nephew on his kindle and he absolutely loves it! I am now ordering him the paperback as well as 4 extra and one for myself! Very well written and illustrated! Your kids will love it for summer reading!

interesting story

wonderful choice of names. good illustrations. It's the sort of book that has to be read to the child while he is too young to be playing with his own iPad. interesting plot. Not really sure if there is a moral here except maybe to stay away from grizzlies. Maybe I'm just too old to appreciate this level of literature and have no children in the right age group to read it to.
