Realms of the Arcane edited by Brian M. Thomsen was released in 1997. This anthology has 10 short stories written by David Cook, Elaine Cunningham, Tom Dupree, J. Robert King, Mark Anthony, Monte Cook, Ed Greenwood, Philip Athans, Brian Thomsen, and Jeff Grubb. There is also a prologue, two interludes, and a epilogue that are written by Wes Nicholson, I will not comment on these except to give a basic overview of them. As you can guess, the stories within deal with things that are arcane in nature.

Prologue by Wes Nicholson- As with all prologue, this sets up the following stories. A probationer, named Wes, is hoping to become a monk at the fabled Candlekeep. He is told by the abbot to clean a reading room in which he finds a secret room filled with text and begins to read.

Wishing You Many More by David Cook- The story is told through correspondent letters between Perfect and Absolute Magister Fannol Pavish and a conjurer named Torreb. Pavish and Torreb were both classmates in an academy in which Torreb was the first student and Pavish was the second. However, Torreb was kicked out due to claims of plagiarism and cheating. Pavish sends a letter to Torreb asking for his help with finding a very powerful staff. Why would a former classmate and a rival ask for one's help when the one bettered Pavish in every way.

Negatives:

1) Predictable. What happens in the story you could tell from, probably, the first five or so pages. Nothing really came as a shock or anything.

2) "Hatred." I never really felt the hatred between the two characters. It just seemed maybe a little forced and ingenious.

Positives:

1) "Gift Exchange." I thought that the exchanging of various different gifts were pretty clever. It really seemed like an "Oh look, the Smiths have a new car. Bob, why don't we have a new car. Oh wait, even better, make it a new boat" scenarios.

2) Correspondence Letters. I like how the story was told this way. It made it a little different and pretty interesting.

Overall: 4/5

Secrets of Blood, Spirits of the Sea by Elaine Cunningham- This is a tale of how the sahuagin came to exist. A dark elven wizard named Ka'Narlist created this creatures from his blood and the blood of other creatures. His servant, a wemic named Mbugua, wants to ruin Ka'Narlist so he sabotages the dark elf's experiments and Mbugua creates a sahuagin/ sea elf named Malenti. However, does Malenti take down Ka'Narlist?

Negatives:

1) The Ending. While it is okay, the problem I have is that, it didn't really say what happened to Ka'Narlist. Did he obtain godhood or is he dead?

2) The storyteller. During some scenes in which the storyteller is talking to his elven captures, it just didn't seem to fit.

Great Quick Stories

Would you listen to Sci-Fi Shorts, Volume 1 again? Why?

I will definitely give this volume a second and possible third listen. I like to catch every little nuance that each author is trying to impart by telling the story.

What did you like best about this story?

There are several stories in this volume, and each has its merits. Some catch you at the end with a plot twist that was unexpected, others you get the idea of what is coming, but it makes the end no less gratifying.

Any additional comments?

The narrator was hard to understand at first, but I quickly grew accustomed to his accent. He imparted some feeling into most of the stories, and even sounded as if he had some knowledge of the locals of some of the stories. Overall I felt this was worth my purchase. One minor gripe is that it is hard to know at times when one story ends and the next begins, there should be a slightly longer pause perhaps.

Old School Vampires

This collection contains the earliest classics of the vampire genre. In fact, it includes what is considered the very first story in the vampire literary genre (well before Bram Stoker's Dracula.)

The Vampyre (1819) - Written by John Polidori in the summer of 1816 while staying at the Villa Diodati in the Swiss mountains with Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Wollestonecraft and Claire Clairmont. While it stormed outside, the group took to the fireplace and dared each other to scare theirselves by telling frightening stories. Out of this inspiring atmosphere came two classics of the gothic horror genre: Frankenstein by Mary Wollestonecraft Shelley and The Vampyre by John Polidori. This fateful gathering has been the subject of numerous books and films including Ken Russell's magnificent film GOTHIC.

Wailing Well (1928) - Written by M.R. James and narrated by Anthony Head (Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.) M.R. James is one of the masters of the ghost story, and having a vampire story told to you by Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer is obviously a geek thrill.

For the Blood Is the Life (1905) - F. Marion Crawford was a woefully under appreciated writer who wrote some outstanding classic weird stories that have been heavily anthologized. In addition to "For the Blood Is the Life" he also wrote "The Upper Berth," "The Dead Smile" and "The Screaming Skull" which was made into a film in 1958.

Great Story, but my ears hurt from the yelling.

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I liked the story quite much. Had to get a hardcopy and read it to arrive at this state though. Unforunately PB's reading is horrible. Not a performance, nor a reading, but more like a yelling. Very mono-tone and quite staccato. Only worst production I would place this above would be F Paul Wilson's Sex Slaves production. Make sure to listen to the sample first, as that's about the peak you'll hear.

Would you recommend The Burning Bridge to your friends? Why or why not?

Short Story - not a novel or even a novella

This is the story of the Flying Dutchman redone as a Sci FI short Story. I first fell in love with stories by Andre Norton as a child, but this being a short story was not something I would have read. I did not really like short stories and only went for novels, especially Ace Double Novels. However, if you only have a short time to devote to a story, this is ideal now.

When she wrote this story, all Science Fiction writers were men, hence Andre Norton, not Mary Alice North. Like many of the classic SCI FI novels, this was free and it was easy to make the decision to order and re-read this great book. If you have never read this story, get it now, sit back, read and enjoy. (I do not do spoilers, but there were enough other reviews here that gave away the plot so go there. Of course the Flying Dutchman should have given away a lot.)

Short story

Writing a good short story is an art. Andre Norton was a master of that art. This is a classic short with great characters and a nice mystery told well. It concerns a lost space ship, a cat and two people each desperate in their own way.

Great story!!!

This was a playful story about two spacers and a cat who recover a derelict ship and defeat a "monster." It was much like an old Star Trek episode. I loved it.

Read this in a collection of short stories previously but it is still good. Don't understand the colorblind problem but oh well.
