    Complex and Intriguing Fantasy
I know what you're thinking. Another book about vampires? Really? Don't knock it till you try it. The author sets vampires against the humans in an epic battle for control of the earth. It's not your average Twilight.
Being a fan of radio drama, I liked how the story was fully produced, including sound effects and different voices for each character. I thought it made it easier to follow and enjoy.
Personally, I found the complex mythology and philosophical discussions even more interesting than the story itself. The author presents a fascinating alternate world in which a perfect race came to earth and taught humans about technology and religion. Finally, I found the perspectives on existence fascinating. The author shows that the universe only exists in our minds.
A deep plot with surprising twists and turns. A love story gone bad. Two empires struggling for ultimate control in a war that could destroy all life. A compelling read.
    keep looking
I never rate stories much less review my purchases. While the concept is good, the writing is frankly garbage and the voice actors leave much to be desired.

Neal Stephenson wurde 1959 in Fort Meade, Maryland, geboren. A modern classic.
If you're a seasoned science fiction reader, you're no doubt already familiar with Stephenson and his outstanding writing. To the uninitiated, do yourself a favor and give this a read. Neal Stephenson's style is highly accessible without skimping on the details. He discusses heavy topics without going dry. His stories are engaging and entertaining, and The Diamond Age is a fine example. For fans of the Cyberpunk genre, Stephenson's post-Cyberpunk styling will offer something both familiar and refreshing.
    Read this.
More steampunk than cyberpunk, but still individual.
Conceptually diverse. Stephenson is aiming low in my opinion but his books are incredibly absorbing. Not as mature as Gibson in his themes and he tends to stray off genre a bit (if that's possible in a pseudo-cyberpunk genre!) but I found Snow Crash a bit more consistent and less fantasy driven for a cyberpunk novel. Still a great novel and full of endearing characters with plenty of individual development. If it wasn't for the excessively flowery and occasionally indecipherable language used and the overall length of the book, I would go so far as to describe it as aimed at the (mature) young adult market. Occasionally my dictionary gave null results for some words used and there are some editing issues as it may have been transferred from another format, but this does not take away from the overall enjoyment. I like the theatrical review intro to each chapter. He seems to have a penchant for leaving us hanging at the end, as with Cryptonomnicon, but I can forgive this as the journey to get there was so much fun. I would heartily recommend this to anyone interested in conceptual future-fi but the hardcore cyberpunk aficionados may be a bit let down. Read Snow Crash instead. Steampunk fans might be tickled though. I reckon 'Kidnapper' should have his own book!
and because I enjoyed Snow Crash quite a lot
Got this on the reccommendation of a friend, and because I enjoyed Snow Crash quite a lot. I really enjoy Stephenson's extrapolation of possible future political constructs, and the technological hazards and solutions involved with nanotech development
    Post Victorian Delight
This book was a delight to read. An intriguing world. And Intriguing characters, and massive doses of ambiguity.

    Can't beat the price!
The package was a little damaged but the CDs were fine. The book itself was great! I would suggest that you look at this vendor first.
    Clean fun and very enjoyable
The gist of the story is described in the book description and editorial reviews. No need to discuss this again. Instead my review will be from a different perspective.
I read this story several years ago recently coming across the book again. I remembered it fondly. No, this book will not win a literary prize as this is not its purpose. It was written to capture the imagination of a broad audience which it does very well. The book is not complicated, easy to read and understand, and written in a time and style that seems out of place by today's graphic standards.
This is classic clean fun science fiction. Although not written as a children's book, in fact, this book is perfect for sitting with your child and reading to or with him or her. The book appeals to all ages. As an adult I really enjoyed the story line. As for the children, their eyes light up if you make it fun for them. This is a great book the entire family can enjoy.
Note: There is some violence in the book, although no more than what the average child is exposed to watching TV on a Saturday morning. Use your own judgment.
That this book was dreadful. When it was published ...
That this book was dreadful. When it was published I imagine it was considered on par with the ideas in one of Robert A. Heinlein's juvenile novels, but for a writer as talented as L. Ron Hubbard, this represents a complete misfire, and probably should've been left to antiquity rather than recorded as an admittedly well-done audiobook.
The story is ridiculous. Its execution is clumsy. Its characters are awful and some are borderline racist by today's standards. The "twist" at the end, while it closes some of the gaping plot holes, is just ludicrous.
    Avoid at all costs.
    Excellent.
Kingslayer is one of many great sci-fi stories L Ron Hubbard wrote for Astounding Science Fiction magazine back in the genre's Golden Age. If you're not yet a fan of Golden Age Science Fiction, give this one a try.
Bridge Audio did a superb job of dramatizing the story, as they also did with Mission Earth and To the Stars. Audio Book fans and OTR aficionados will be pleased.

    Dark Sanity
    Any additional comments?
A great scifi novel. I enjoyed following all the main characters...like them although I didnt like a couple of characters. I hope there is a follow up book.
    Great idea but poor development
    Any additional comments?
Flint Cross is a gunslinger living in post apocalyptic Australia. The world is desolated due to sun flares which killed most of the population. People needed to adapt to the heat or die. Flint is disturbed many night by dreams that result to be pieces from a past life. He will have to seek the aboriginal tribes for help in finding out the truth behind those dreams.
Despite the initial premises, this is not only a book with western reminiscences set in a post apocalyptic Australia. We are in the 54th century and there are other worlds and technologies that Flint will have to rediscover, along with his true identity, his lover and his mission.
I found the beginning of the book quite enjoyable and it really picked my curiosity. The set and characters were interesting, and the mystery behind Flint's dreams made me want to know more. The characters were well portrayed, and we get enough information to make a well built story. But when Flint realizes that his dreams could mean that he had a different life and acts upon it, the rhythm and atmosphere suddenly changes. If I felt that the beginning was slowly cooked, the middle and especially the end of the book were rushed. We did not have enough time to know Flint's friends and find out why he needed to complete his mission. Also, the information from the middle to the end was given in a very artificial way, through monologues from secondary characters. The ship building felt rushed, without any detail about the design or construction. I think it would have been interesting seeing how Flint starts remembering about technology. This is one of the aspects which makes this book non science-fiction but mere fantasy.
We get glimpses of the dimensional synthesis but we do not get the complete explanation why this will mean the cosmos destruction. I think there was a lack of fundament here.
I had troubles with the names Amanda and Amara, and got confused at times whether Flint was referring to one or the other. In hindsight I think this similarity was intended, but for me it did not add any value and made things confusing.
The narration was very well done, except for a couple of audio inserts that were a bit evident. The diction was clear and the voices well differentiated.

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
On a hotter and more volatile Earth in the 23rd century, humans like Clare and Jon live in utopia, hunting and gathering in small tribal bands, engaged in daily art and ritual, reunited with old friends like the shaggy mammoth and giant ground sloth. Even better, they still have solar-powered laptops and can communicate with each other around the world.
The understanding of physics has also advanced. When scientists first cloned extinct species from the Pleistocene, they discovered that many of them were telepathic - that consciousness travels in waves. For most people, animism has become the preferred religion, a panpsychism compatible with the laws of a fractal holographic universe. As Clare tells one of her students, the return to an older, Paleolithic lifestyle is "one of humanity's greatest achievements."
It's too bad that utopia had to come at such a cost: a genetically engineered supervirus that wiped out most of Earth's human population. Humanity was shaken by that event and vowed to change. Now, on the 150th anniversary of that catastrophe, a small group of men and women - as well as a smarter-than-average dire wolf and saber-toothed cat - are suddenly faced with decisions in which the stakes are higher than ever before. Will Earth repeat the cycle of unbridled hubris? Or is humanity's destiny even stranger than that?

Knocking on Heaven's Door - interesting and powerful
Knocking on Heavenâs Door, Sharman Apt Russellâs 2016 novel, is set in the American southwest 150 years in the future, when the human population has been drastically reduced by the results of climate change, a virus pandemic, and nuclear radiation. I am not usually a science fiction reader, but Sharman Russell is an author I read, whatever her new topic or genre, so I approached this book with interest.
I see Sharman Russellâs writing as a body of work, so I enjoyed the fact that this sci-fi novel draws on her entire lifelong path of inquiry, including archaeology, anthropology, pantheism, animism, citizen science, social justice, and issues of food, nature, mothering, teaching, and our spiritual lives. I chose this book for my book club to read, and although several of the people in the group found it hard going â sci-fi not being their style â our thoughtful discussion of the book was animated and broad ranging. One person wrote to me afterwards âthat sometimes a book is more than a book.â I find that the threads of Knocking on Heavenâs Door continue to surface and inform what I have been reading since then â a lasting sign of the power of a book that I look for!
âThereâs the good kind, and then thereâs the other kind
To paraphrase Duke Ellington who said about other jazz artists, âThereâs the good kind, and then thereâs the other kind,â Iâll preface my review of Russellâs Knocking on Heavenâs Door, by saying there are good writers, and then there are the other kind. Sharman Apt Russell is one of the few: She is one of the best-of-best writers.

    Not even remotely believable
I wanted to like this, I really did. I've been searching for that perfect mix of zombie fiction. Fast-paced, character driven, but believable. It's hard to say exactly where this novella goes wrong. The writing isn't awful, it's actually relatively descriptive in all the right ways. I think most of the problem lies within the dialogue. There was nothing realistic about the way they talked to each other. It reminded me more of something you would hear in a play put on by kindergartners. There was hardly any contractions... "I do not (don't) believe he would survive long...It is (its) too dark... you are (you're) immune... no I will not (won't) take that chance....People just don't talk like that in every day communication. And I think she tries to move too quickly from point A to point B. The scenes are short and clipped in that "show me, don't tell me" kind of way.
I can't tell if the narrator made it worse or better. Almost every sentence ended sounding like she had just asked a question. But she did an okay job at voice inflection for the different characters. I think given a different story, with better dialogue, she would have done better.
Either way, I'm sorry to say I would not recommend either the story or the narrator to anyone.
Not recommend, to fast and too hard to follow.
this was like listening to a speed reader. hard to follow and no reasons for anything that is happening. can't follow any of the characters.
