Not bad, but not enough examples
Would you try another book from Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton and/or Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton ?
    Probably not
Has The Carrot Principle turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, on the contrary, if you are looking to believe in the concept of employee recognition, they give plenty of numbers and studies that back up the idea the recognizing and rewarding employees is the way to go, however, I found the words 'study', 'research', were way overused. I just wanted to know how to do it better than I am already doing.
    fantastic listen
If you could sum up The Carrot Principle in three words, what would they be?
    Informative inspiring thought provoking
What other book might you compare The Carrot Principle to and why?
This book is similar to the referral machine.
    Any additional comments?
I need to listen to this one again. Its a constant barrage of good ideas, and you can't really take it all in in one listen. Too much good info!
    Good information
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The information they provide is useful and informative. However, they are both a bit pretentious and they swap back and forth during the reading. Both of those annoyed me, but get past them and there really is useful stuff here.
How could the performance have been better?
    Use one narrator.
Do not pronounce your "s" as "z".
    It is not prO-ject. It's Proh-ject.
    And so forth.
Nit picky? Maybe, but they talk in your ear for quite a while and it gets old.
What did you learn from The Carrot Principle that you would use in your daily life?
    Management principles.
    Recognition =/= Rewards
The authors cited several studies in order to legitimize their advice. However, their advice took giant leaps from the management science, which simply doesn't support the authors' proposed practices. For example, one of the significant findings they cited was that leadership of companies are rated higher on all aspects of their leadership when the management of the companies recognize employees for good work. Then the authors give all sorts of advice and examples on which rewards (that cost money) managers should give employees. Recognition does not mean rewards, and in fact, there is a body of scientific study that shows that receiving rewards actually diminishes people's motivation.

    Title: The Speed of Trust
Subtitle: The One Thing that Changes Everything
Author: Stephen R. Covey, Rebecca R. Merrill
    Narrator: Stephen R. Covey
    Format: Abridged
Length: 1 hr and 15 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-12-06
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 358 votes
    Genres: Business, Career Skills
    Publisher's Summary:
Written from his informed perspective as the former CEO of a $100 million enterprise, Covey draws on his pragmatic experience growing the Covey Leadership Center (founded by his father, Dr. Stephen R. Covey) from a shareholder value of less than $3 million to a value of more than $160 million.
Covey articulates why trust has become the key leadership competency of the new global economy. He eloquently informs readers of how to inspire lasting trust in their personal and professional relationships, and in so doing to create unparalleled success and sustainable prosperity in every dimension of life. He shows business, government, and education leaders how to quickly and permanently gain the trust of clients, coworkers, partners, and constituents. The author convincingly makes the case that trust is a measurable performance accelerator, and that when trust goes up, speed also goes up while cost comes down, producing what Covey calls a "trust dividend".
This powerful new audiobook reveals the 13 behaviors common to high-trust leaders throughout the world and demonstrates actionable insights that will enable you to increase and inspire trust in your important relationships.
    Critic Reviews:
"This book can change lives. Covey helps us understand how to nurture and inspire immediate trust in every encounter, which is the foundation for true and lasting success in life...Interesting and enlightening." (Larry King)
"This book by leadership expert Covey is a welcome guide to nurturing trust in our professional and personal lives....The author effectively reminds us that there's plenty of room for improvement on this virtue....Covey's down-to-earth approach and disarming personal stories go a long way to establish rapport with his listener." (Publisher's Weekly)

Son of Covey carries on the legacy...
He ran the company his Dad founded (Covey Leadership Center) up until they merged with FranklinQuest.
Now, in this book, Stephen M. R. Covey explores in greater depth the foundation of the character ethic so eloquently taught by his father: trust.
This book will give you new insights on how important trust really is, and just how much so many people and organizations have taken it for granted.
(And unlike his father, his narration isn't in monotone! :-) )
    Very Disappointed
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I was very disappointed by how little the audio version covered. If I had time to sit around for hours reading a (free) web site, then I would do that. The whole reason I bought the audio book was so that I could listen to it (over and over again for years?), while I did other things. The superficial paucity of information included in the Audible version was not worth $3.00, let alone more!
Trust Shouldn't Be Taken For Granted
If you could sum up The Speed of Trust in three words, what would they be?
A must read for anyone who thinks their a leader. This book has me reflecting on all the relationships I have destroyed in my life and what I can do to make sure I don't cause more destruction in the future. It's going on my read once a year list.
What other book might you compare The Speed of Trust to and why?
Patrick Lencioni, 5 Dysfunctions of a Team
Have you listened to any of Stephen R.

    Find your passion
My first audible.com book and it was a great way to start. An interesting book that builds on the Good to Great concepts but applies it to the leadership traits of enduringly successful people. Whether you aspire to be this or not will not be changed by this book, but it does provide some great insight and self evaluation opportunities into what has truly driven successful people. It helped to bridge the gap between the hype in some books about finding your meaning in life and some real examples where this has occured. It will cause you to think about what you are passionate about and whether this drives enduring satisfaction in your life that could impact others. A mix of narrators in the book helped break it up and make it an enjoyable listen.
    great book
I listened to this prior to hearing Good to Great. It was a good introduction. The stories of successful business leaders are inspiring. It provides a treasure trove of anecdotes for business motivation.
    I lost interest fast
Not much substance to this one idea - do what you love or you are doomed - which is delivered in a hard sell style which is a big turn off. I turned it off after hearing one of the writers attribute the term " irrational exuberance" to Alan Greenspan.

    Learned valuable techniques
I learned many techniques that have helped me disengage with some difficult co-workers. The book teaches you how to identify personality traits around you - and challenges you to find yourself in there. How to appease difficult co-workers if you absolutely have to work with them. This gives back your power because in a way you're manipulating and placating them to make their insecure selves feel more important while you walk away rolling your eyes and enjoying the workplace more - well that's what I took from that section anyway. Great, quick audiobook.
    Difficult People Problem Solved!
Crowley and Elster have written a refreshing and extremely helpful book on how to deal with problem people and situations. The book focuses on work relationships, but I found it very useful dealing with people in all walks of life, including my family. I recommended this book to anyone who has a problem with work relationships or any other relationship. This is a perfect book to give a graduating Seniors or College students as they get ready to join the business world. It is a must read for everyone in business!
    Just what I needed! ;p
This audiobook is just in time. A must read if you're working with a bitchy boss.
    Good Solid Advice
I work in large corporation with staff of 20+. I am bad boss and have bad boss. I am cynic. Dismissed book at first. As book progressed I found valuable insights. I made staff listen to book during work hours. They too were skeptical going in. But now they reference book often. Great fun associating people at work (including me) with circumstances and advice in book. It helps to know your bad circumstance exists elsewhere!!!

As a subject matter expert on workplace bullying and discrimination, I found this book to be highly engaging and brimming with professional details. This is a very good book and a must read!

One of the best books I have read or listened to!
This is an excellent book for enhancing relationships at work and at home. Its too bad its not taught in high school! The listening experience is tremendously enhanced if you also read the book as there are a few key concepts that have been edited in this audio version. This book is absolutely one of the best I have read or listened to! I highly recommend it.
    Enlightening
I wanted to read this book, but felt a little self-conscious doing so. Listening to the book was great. I would pause from time to time to reflect on the examples and strategies. I have begun to use several of the strategies - successfully! I will listen to several sections of this book again and again, as I continue to implement some of the techniques. Much more useful for actually making changes in how to approach others than it's predecessor, Crucial Conversations - a book that highlighted the need to consider a different approach to important discussions. Crucial Confrontations is contains very practical strategies to improving professional and personal communications. Bravo!
Not a lot of new information
If you could sum up Crucial Confrontations in three words, what would they be?
This is a follow up book to Crucial Conversations and not a lot of new information was presented.
Don't decide based on reviews of reader
I was kind of surprised at the reactions to the narrator, whose tone seemed typical for this type of book, i.e., matter of fact. He reads as though he understands what he's saying-- which is the major requirement-- and I don't think a tone of great excitement would be appropriate for the material. (Compare the narrator of "The World is Flat," who maintains a uniformly breathless tone throughout that I found highly distracting.) He does, however, sound sarcastic during his reading of the "scripts" provided by authors when it is clearly not what the authors intended. (On the other hand, when the scripts in fact do call for a sarcastic tone, he's superb.) On the whole, I rarely found myself distracted by the narrator, and, especially since this book is a quite good example of its type, I would not avoid it just based on the reviews of the narrator.
    Good Material, Tough Listening
I agree with the other listener about the tone of the narrator on this audiobook. His unenthusiastic tone seems dry and I find it hard to list to.

    Great communication tools!
Crucial Conversations offers excellent analyses and real tools for improving the most difficult relationships in your professional and personal life. Beware: the emphasis is on YOU, so dont buy this hoping to find a way to change your boss, your spouse, or that back-stabbing SOB down the hall. Do buy it to find ways to get past that fight or flight reaction in yourself and almost anyone else so you can really talk. (Also read Martha Stouts The Sociopath Next Door to understand why no communication or relationship strategy can possibly work with some people.)
    I'm re-reading it now
I really enjoy this book thoroughly. It's straight forward and explains things well. The examples and explanations are easily understandable and relate to real life. There are plenty of clever labels that make remembering important information easy. I enjoyed the explanations of labels such as: "Dope-up Dumbed-Down state". This label explains why critical conversations are difficult from a biological standpoint. Crucial conversations are defined as interactions with others (at home, work, or elsewhere) that have moderate to high stakes, opinions vary and emotions run high. The poor habits seem to reflect poor habits I have myself. The examples seem reasonable to real life and they are written in witty ways. The narration is (nearly) perfect as the description indicates. The narrator reads with accurate expression. I often found myself relating to the situations that are in the book. I'm a "Mute & Salute" kind of person (or "silent fumer"). I have been avoiding or poorly handling crucial conversations in my own life because I have felt ill-equipped to do it well. It undermined my influence. I've reread the forward & first chapter 3 times now. I have struggled with a lot of the things that are listed in the book. I look forward to applying these principles to my own conversations. I liked it so much, I ended up buying it as a gift for a friend of mine who I know would enjoy these topics and tools. I also look forward to listening to "Crucial Confrontations" by the same authors. I think this book should be considered by all.
    Essential Reading for Everyone
We are taught the technical skills of our professions. But often we are not taught the most important one... How to communicate with one another. This audiobook has transformed the way that I interact with everyone.

    Publisher's Summary:
Integrity. It is more than simple honesty. It's the key to success. A person with integrity has the, often rare, ability to pull everything together, to make it all happen no matter how challenging the circumstances.
Drawing on experiences from his work with Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, and individual leaders, Dr. Henry Cloud, a clinical psychologist and nationally syndicated radio host, shows how our character can keep us from achieving all we want to (or could) be.
In Integrity, Dr. Cloud explores the six qualities of character that define integrity. He uses stories from well-known business leaders like Michael Dell and sports figures like Tiger Woods to illustrate each of these qualities. He shows us how people with integrity:
Success is not related to only talent or brains. There are a lot of bright, talented people who are never successful. And the most successful are not only the ones with the most talent. The real factor, Cloud demonstrates, is the makeup of the person. All of us can grow in the kinds of real character that bring about fruitful relationships and achievement of purpose, mission, and goals. Integrity is not something that you either have or don't, but instead is an exciting growth path that all of us can engage in and enjoy.
    Critic Reviews:
"Cloud's conversational writing style makes for an easy read, and much of his advice is sound." (Publishers Weekly)

An Audiobook That Everyone Should Hear
I only downloaded this book a couple of days ago and I'm already on my second listen. Harry Cloud speaks very well and seems to truly know his subject matter. Although nothing is truly ground-breaking or life-altering about this book it is a great reminder about why we should strive to improve our character and our integrity. He says we should do it not just for its own sake but because it will help us in every aspect of our lives, from our careers to our relationships.
While I was listening, I found myself applying what he said to myself and also the people that I know. It helped me more fully understand what it takes to become "integrated" and more respected and liked by others.
Finally - clearly defined components of Character!
Would you listen to Integrity again? Why?
Yes it is packed for solid and applicable information for all aspects of your life.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Integrity?
How Dr Cloud introduces the terms and applies real stories for application. His story telling approach makes the concepts very useful.
    Which scene was your favorite?
No specific one - all good!
If you could give Integrity a new subtitle, what would it be?
Character Integration & Transparency or Heart and Will: Creating a Win - Win
    Any additional comments?
Truly a must read for all brave enough to Lead were no one else wants to go.
Different than You Think, Better Than I Thought
Those who have read Henry Cloud's books know that he does great stuff. Intregrating into your life what you know as truth is at the heart of integrity. Come to this book with an open mindset, you will love it.
    A good listen
I downloaded the book and listened to it during one long road trip. Very empowering! It caused me to do a great deal of introspection and gave me motivation to continue a journey of improvement. I love this stuff.
    Everyone needs to read this.

    Terrific
This was exactly what I was looking for in a book on negotiation. This book takes you beyond simple negotiation and demonstrates the value of making a connection with the client. Superb book in audio form, more effective than reading this particular book, in my opinion.
Not as good as other booth by the same author. More for starters.
Book didn't really do justice to the reputation of the author. It has lot of tips which I already knew having read other books on the same subject.

    Worth the Read
The critics of this book have some basis for what they are telling you. The narrator is not great and the book is very long. The author is a bit over the top as well. However, I found the message to be very important. I had avoided "playing politics" my whole career feeling that it was dishonest and selfish. This book changed my mind 100%. If you already see the value of networking you may not understand that it only truly works if it is a win-win for everyone. It should not be selfish or unethical. Help everyone while helping yourself. I think that is the point of the book. If everyone did that we could all get on with doing our jobs without all the nonsense.
Do yourself a favor and read the book, but set your mp3 player to a faster than normal speed. The narrator is much easier to take and the book only seems to drone on for a little while. It's worth the effort and it has turned out for me to be a very important book in my library.

I'm really surprised by the previous reviewers' comments. Granted, the author does like to mention his accomplishments but most authors of How-To books do so in order to give credibility to their advice. His main message is that most people in our culture value a sense of individuality that eventually leads to isolation, loneliness, and a lack of personal fulfillment. This book is an attempt to inspire you to connect to and develop your community by following your passion, helping others, and making connections among the people you know. In turn, your community will want to see you develop and be successful. I just wish I would have 'read' this book sooner.
    Good book/terrible narrator
I heard the author on Dr. Oz's radio show. He was humble, intelligent, witty, and had much gratitude for his life and all the people he's met along the way. He had a genuine sense of wanting to make a difference in his life. I was drawn to his book because of the interview.
However, I was shocked when I heard the narrator. His pace was unbelievable slow, the pauses unbearable. It was almost like he was reading in such a way to help non-english speakers understand english. The inflections were moronic almost like a bad actor trying to do Shakespeare. I agree with the other reviewers that he comes across as self-absorbed.

    Win Your Case
I have been a prosecutor for the last 7 years in the SF Bay Area, and Gerry Spence in "How to Win Your Case" has given me even more confidence in trying my cases through his methods of persuasion. At the start, it comes out elementary, but as it progresses the book literally gives you power to make an argument for what you believe in. And everything he talks about can be applied to any situation you may find yourself having to argue an idea or a case to another person or group of persons. He keeps it simple and commonsensical. I play it in my car while going to my next day of trial. Each time you listen, you come up with new ideas on how you tailor your arguments through your own life experiences.
    Dry then Wet
The beginning talks a lot about who you are and getting to know your inner voice... I almost thought it was a self help book for a little bit.
Then it picked up drastically by dealing with situations a trial lawyer will encounter, such as: empathizng with the client, appearing as a truly honest person, and other entities to sway the jury. He hits on many key points that seem obvious but truly aren't.
As a future lawyer I found many key points that were not explicit in most legal books. There are no break throughs but this is definitely a solid read and gives you something more to measure a yourself and a lawyer by.
    Classic Gerry
Some good material here, but Gerry Spence would hold my attention reading the phone book. His delivery is so damn entertaining. Had this book been read by a professional reader, I'd probably have given it only 3 stars.
I plan to listen to this over and over....
This is one of those books that you can listen to very passively but the valuable information can sink in. I really enjoyed this book and I'm a big fan of the author. I also like the fact that it's rather short but the information is very beneficial. I also want to note that I'm not an attorney. I do not agree with the notion that this is a book only for attorneys. The logic here can apply to anyone in any position.
    Spence Rocks.
What a fantastic book for lawyers and nonlawyers alike! This guy has forgotten more than we'll ever know about trying a case. Brilliantly written and read by the author himself. It doesn't get any better.
