Animals are disappearing at night, and itâs up to the nocturnals, creatures who are normally awake at night, to solve the mystery. Banding together are a pangolin, a fox, and a sugar glider. Other animals getting in on the action include a wombat, a group of echo-location challenged bats, a band of coyotes and more.
The Nocturnals: The Mysterious Abductions by Tracey Hecht is the first in a series that aims to introduce readers to Australiaâs mammals while leading them on an adventure. The animals have to use their strengths, rely on teamwork, and be a bit daring to solve the mystery. The answer to the disappearances is wholly unexpected, and it adds a new element to the story.
The Nocturnals is appropriate for readers aged 9 to 11 to read on their own, but it also works as a parent-child read aloud for kids as young as six. And while young readers have fun following the action, theyâll also be learning about traits of the animals featured in the book. It makes for a winning combination of facts and fiction that I expect will entice kids to seek out the next books in the series.
The publisher provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
A Fun Start to a Promising New Series That Seamlessly Incorporates Natural History and Science Into the Story ...
An unusual trio of animals joins forces as âa Nocturnal Brigadeâ to solve a number of mysterious abductions. Tracey Hechtâs âThe Nocturnals: The Mysterious Abductionsâ is a humorous twist on the concept of three different, but frequently used personalities and three animals that will make adults smile and children laugh aloud.
Tobin, the pangolin, Bismark, the sugar glider, and Dawn, a red fox, meet one evening and discover they are all nocturnal. An encounter with a serpent and Dawnâs swift action prevents a tragedy and helps cement a friendship. A subsequent encounter with Cora, a frightened wombat, and her request for help in finding her brother Joe, the victim of a mysterious abduction, set the story in motion.
The quartetâs discovery that other animals are disappearing and their deductions about salt water and a tooth lead the group to some caves. Four bats having faulty sonar-location lead the group into the caves. When surprised, these bats use Yiddish expressions. After Jerry the jerboa betrays the Nocturnal Brigade, the captive animals will have to fight for their freedom and win a game similar to hockey against Boris, the crocodile and his Crocs team. This may be the only downside to âThe Nocturnals: The Mysterious Abductionsâ.
