    Title: Sterling Point Books
Subtitle: Admiral Richard Byrd: Alone in the Antarctic
    Author: Paul Rink
    Narrator: Jay Snyder
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-01-09
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 16 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
Although less well known than his famous flight over the North Pole, Admiral Richard E. Byrd's adventures in Antarctica are just as remarkable. Wide-eyed youngsters will feel the excitement and danger as they learn about the isolated and tight little manned station where Byrd lived, separated from his crew; the temperatures that plunged to 60 degrees below zero; and Byrd's brush with death when a small stove he needed to keep warm - and stay alive - filled the air with carbon monoxide. It's a tale of personal courage and dedication, all set against a backdrop of perhaps the harshest environment on earth.

    Extraordinary feat of endurance
That Byrd even decided to live alone through the Antarctic winter to make meteorological recording is extraordinary. That he survived it was even more extraordinary. But I just couldn't understand why they didn't predict that the fumes from the generator would affect him. And why he didn't attach himself to the building by rope as sailors do when he went outside the shack for a walk or to make his routine weather measurements.
Anyway, that aside, it is a interesting saga -- rich in adventure and also the human qualities of team work, self sacrifice and bravery.
The narrator was committed to sharing the drama of the events being unfolded.

Title: Into the Land of the Unicorns
Subtitle: The Unicorn Chronicles, Book 1
    Author: Bruce Coville
    Narrator: Bruce Coville
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 37 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-17-09
    Publisher: Full Cast Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 139 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
Soon Cara has also met a rebellious young unicorn named Lightfoot, and a ridiculous little creature called "the Squijum." With their help, Cara embarks on a journey across Luster to deliver a message from her grandmother to the queen of the unicorns. But to survive the trip, Cara must come face to face with her greatest hope, and her greatest fear.
    Editorial Reviews:
Fantasy and mystery combine when Cara is forced to flee Earth, clutching her grandmother's amulet and carrying a message for the unicorn queen. The dramatic production helps the listener distinguish the many fantastic characters inhabiting the land of the unicorns. Particularly good performances are given by Mimi Holbert, who nicely captures the amusing, squirrel-like Squijum, and Kate Huddleston, who elegantly portrays the dragon, Firethroat. Children who enjoy fantasy and the many young girls who clamor for unicorn stories may appreciate this first installment of the Unicorn Chronicles.

    BOOK DETAILS:
Into the Land of the Unicorns by Bruce Coville, read and published by Full Cast Audio (2009) / Length: 3 hrs 37 min
    SERIES INFO:
This is Book #1 of 4 in "The Unicorn Chronicles," all four are available on audio.
    SUMMARY:
Many of the elements of this story are straight out of the fantasy playbook, but Bruce Coville's style of writing almost always manages to suck me in and keep my attention. This book is definitely more on the plot driven side, rather than my preferred character driven tales; yet the glimpses we get into what is going on with the characters is intriguing.
    CHARACTERS:
Cara: In such a short book, we don't get a lot of character development for her but it was enough. She is loyal, brave & compassionate, but not unbelievably so. Note: She always wanted to live in a library, which is an excellent life goal.
We don't learn a lot about anybody besides her, but my favorite side character so far is Thomas (the Tinker and philsopher).
    WORLDBUILDING:
The world seems to be a standard fantasy setting (forests & caves, unicorns, dwarves called Delvers, dragons, etc), but also includes a couple of unique creature people who aren't fully explained in this volume. There are good descriptions of the colors, sights, sounds, and smells of the world. The history of the unicorns & hunters is quite interesting.
    PLOT:
The book starts right in with a couple of action scenes that do a good job of setting up the mystery & danger Cara will be dealing with. We then meet the main individuals who will be going on our quest. The book is very short, but doesn't feel under developed. It moves along at a good pace with a mix of action and talk. There is an ending to this quest, but the overall plots regarding Cara's family and the danger to the unicorns remains open.
    HIGHLIGHTS / CAUTIONS:
--The home & library of the Keeper of the Chronicles - Just like Cara, I want to live there.
    --Thomas' cart/wagon
    --Cara's interactions with the dragon
CAUTIONS: Cara believes that her parents abandoned her and suffers a great deal of emotional trauma as a result.
    NARRATION:
Full Cast Audio uses different actors for all the main roles, and casts actual children as the younger characters. I am particularly fond of Bruce Coville's voice, and he is very good at emoting.

Did you know that John Adams had to coax Thomas Jefferson into writing the Declaration of Independence? It's true. The shy Virginia statesman refused at first, but then went on to author one of our nation's most important and inspiring documents. The third U.S. president, Jefferson was also an architect, inventor, musician, farmer, and - what is certainly the most troubling aspect of his life - a slave owner.

    GOOD
I really liked this book,it was narrated very well. And please don't talk a lot about how everyone dies
    Narration matters
We were preparing for a family trip to Monticello and I thought it would enhance the experience for my kids to listed to a history of Jefferson as we drove there. The content of the book was just what I was looking for but the narration was awful. His tone was flat and he reads in a stilted manner. At some points it was clear that he was reading lines, not sentences. I was dissapointed as were my kids.
    Good Book
This book came in very good description of Thomas Jefferson's life I recommend this if you would like to learn about Jefferson

This story is more adventurous than the first. more mystery and danger than the first.
    Beautifully written and narrated.
The story was as magical as the last and quite creepy from time to time. the epic tale of Henry York is quite incredible. N.D. Wilson has done a fantastic job, and Russell Horton added much more talent to this work.

    'Hoo' Would Have Thought?
I'm a Grandma, and my just-turned-seven grandson has been obsessed with this series since borrowing the movie "The Owls of Ga'hoole" from the library.
Delighted with his furious reading, I decided to check out Kathryn Lasky's work. Must say I didn't have much hope that the books would offer much literary value! So, I read a couple and ordered this one from Audible.
What a nice surprise! There's real "meat" here in a riveting story about a charming society of owls. As with many of the best and most popular series for the very young, the action seems very violent and the dilemmas faced by the characters seem very mature. Smart authors like Lasky keep what are very serious human themes at a distance from young minds by using animals as characters. Their world is somewhat like ours, but the real pain and threats which make these characters and the story so real aren't experienced in an uncomfortable and scary way. Must say I am impressed with the quality and the emotional impact of the Ga'hoole books I have read.
Reading was fun, but Pamela Garelick makes this world even better! I love her narration. Of course, it's best to encourage kids to read the books themselves, but the Audible alternatives would make great family listens during car trips.
    The Guardians Series is Excellent
My eight-year old and I listened to the first eight Guardians of Ga'Hoole books and enjoyed them all immensely. Being a bird lover, these tales are especially fun and for weeks on end, our world became the world of the Guardians. Pamela Garelick's narration is very good; only her voice for Gyflie was a bit annoying (the voice was very high) though I got used to it. Unfortunately, the next seven books have not yet been recorded so we're reading them ourselves!

My nine-year-old daughter used to hate reading until she found this series. Now she cannot put them down.
âExcitingâ book for early chapter readers
This might be the first chapter book my 6 year old first grader has actually finished. Iâve struggled to find books that hold her interest as she is not into the same kind of books her older sister enjoyed at this reading level (Ivy & Bean, Heidi Heckelbeck, Stella Batts). So happy to have discovered this series which she describes as âexcitingâ.
