Audie Award Finalist, Children's Titles for Ages up to 8, 2005
"[Gaiman is] more than up to the task of reading his work with great style.... He performs as a consummate storyteller." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
Great story and he is an excellent narrator, too
I myself listened to his book called, "Graveyard Book" and fell in love with the way he narrates story. When I was searching other books by him, came across with this and thought of getting this to our daughter(9 years old). She loved it, too. Now she is onto Graveyard Book. I think he is one of the best narrator! His voice leads you into the story! Highly recommended.
Great for kids in the car...
...and when the kids come out of the car, it doesn't have to be all over.
I was looking specifically for an audio version of "The Wolves in the Walls" but decided to go with this collection first because it was inexpensive and second because it had so much supplementary material. All of the stories are good and both my son and I love Neil Gaiman's reading voice. The surprise favorite part was the interview between Gaiman and his daughter at the very end.
The only complaint I have is there is no space left between the end of a story and the title of the next, which leads to a very jarring segue from story to story since it sounds like the title is simply a continuation of the last sentence of the previous story. A two-second pause wouldn't have gone amiss here.
    fun to have on hand
These short stories are a lot of fun, not too scary, and nice to have on hand if the kids are antsy and you want to play them something that won't take hours to get through.
Great story for anyone who enjoys a great story
Neil Gaiman is a wonderful narrator to his stories.

    amazing book
great for young and old alike. I often wish I could enter the World of Redwall.
    great.
loved it excited to start next one. I always will want to go see redwall
    Cool ideas, mixed bag
There are some good ideas here and a good performance from the cast (and as often, amusing songs), but the story is kind of a mess that feels like Jaques had some story ideas, but wasn't quite sure how to tie them together (Runaway slaves! Friends on a journey! Pirates! Three serpents connected to be one!). Good pay off, but the trip there could've been smoother...

    Laura Linney Deserves an Award
The Nancy Drew series is not "The Hunger Games," and many young girls today will find it pretty mundane and unexciting. The authors who were Carolyn Keene in their day do not give us great literature here.
That said, I recommend the Nancy Drew books narrated by Laura Linney. She brings an uncritical freshness and enthusiasm to the old chestnuts! It would be great for a mother or grandmother who was a fan to share this listen with a daughter or granddaughter.
They also make for great before-bed listening, and I mean that in the best way. Forget your cynicism and the problems of the modern world and curl up with Nancy and Laura.
    Still my favorite...
These audio books have been a lifesaver while recovering from a concussion, because I can't read. Laura Linney is the best of the ND narrators... Wish she would do the whole series.
    Every Clue Counts
Nancy is her usual self and get involved in another mystery. Makes you want to lay out in a hammock and listen. Relaxing.

Aging has made it not very PC, try the new ebook.
This book was published in 2002, which is why the way it handled autism is kind of painful to listen to with modern ears. Back when I was a kid, I really loved this book, but the internet, and knowing some autistic people, has made parts of it, especially the ending, kind of not okay for me, which is sad. The book was rewritten recently with this in mind, so I'd recommend giving the Millennium Edition a try. They're currently only out as ebooks, but they'll eventually be published.
Diane Duane is amazing as usual, so the writing is good.
This book is kind of the "mental health" book of the series so far, dealing primarily with depression and autism. The story itself was really interesting, and, as usual, the worldbuilding is wonderful.
I highly recommend it, or the revised ebook.
Not the best in the series... but still darn good!
Okay, it was time that the quality of this series took a hit. Instead of my normal enthusiastic five starts, this one only gets four.
Some of the narrative is confusing, and some of the facts are wrong. Autism, for example, doesn't suddenly strike eight-year-olds.
Still, there's much good in it, and I really liked the way it followed the events of A WIZARD'S DILEMMA. (No spoilers.)
It sort of feels like an in-between book. I expect that some of the details in this book will come up in the next two.
I've said it before, but the reader for this book is really good. Without launching into a full performance, she keeps the voices separate, and you can feel each character in the voice.
    amazing
yet another amazing story in the young wizards series. now its on to yhe next one for me! :D
    Knowledge shows...
Diane Duane's understanding of Autism is good. She presents a story that could be a very plausible explaination for some forms of the syndrome. I think that reading this novel could help some people understand Autism Spectrum from the point of view of some of the individuals who present with it.
There was also alot of humor in this book. The "awakening" of Kit's dog and the various electronic entities had me laughing out loud several times.

  • Listening for the Crack of Dawn Audiobook by Donald Davis

Title: Listening for the Crack of Dawn
    Author: Donald Davis
    Narrator: Donald Davis
    Format: Abridged
    Length: 2 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-20-00
    Publisher: August House
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 58 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
These stories of growing up in Appalachia in the 1950s are funny and true, nostalgic and bittersweet. The characters are memorable: Miss Martha Anne Butler, "the last surviving member of a failed Southern family", whose grocery deliveries always included two pints of gin; the Reverend N.N. Upchurch, old Preacher No-No, whose nickname "pretty well summed up his opinion on most subjects"; and Aunt Laura, who knew to listen for the crack of dawn.
Our narrator faces the trials of growing up with humor, hope, and (usually) good grace. He saves Blue Horse Notebook Paper coupons to buy the world's heaviest coaster bike, engages in games of "Daring Miss Butler", taunts the shadowy Terrell Tubbs with his buddies, and uses the resources of his electronics class to invent a keyless ignition for Red McElroy's Ford pickup. The sweet and painful memories are all here, told in a storyteller's voice.
    Editorial Reviews:
Wise . . . touching . . . funny . . . sad . . .Donald Davis is all these, plus just plain captivating. For twenty years a Methodist minister, he found his true calling as a professional storyteller. In these four original stories he reminisces about his childhood in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina, in a small town that sounds very like Lake Wobegone. But there the resemblance stops. Although appearing to ramble as much as Garrison Keillor, Donald Davis gives each story a spin and a polish that leaves the listener wiser at the end.
    Critic Reviews:
"As wholesome as milk." (Raleigh News and Observer)
"Davis has interconnected this set of stories in such a way as to create a place...as memorable as Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon." (Lexington Herald-Leader)

    Outstanding stories. Outstanding Narrator
My family and I listened to this in the car on a weekend trip. None of us were ready for it to end. My kids, ages 13 and 11, were particularly struck by the ending of the last story. You have to listen to this title!
    Donald's Finest moment
We have listen to this audible over and over. I first had it as a tape and got it as an audible. Choices cost us something and this audible is an example of insight and lessons. Really good for 12 to 17 years old as some of the material is geared to that age.
A Wonderful Walk Down Memory Lane!
I was talking to my 17 year old son early this morning and said something about the crack of dawn. Out of a recess in my mind came a fracture of memory. One of my teachers from Berclair Elem. School used to play a record of folk stories to us sometimes. It's such a vague memory that I only know I was very young and I remember it being several stories, but the only one I remembered anything about was one where a very old woman would run out of the kitchen, across the back porch and into the porch rail and dish water flew into the yard and something about snuff. That was all I had to go on, but I really hoped I might find these stories I last heard on a record in the early 80's. Finding this as a possibility and then seeing it was available on Audible was like it was written in the stars. I use Kindle/Audible literally every single day. I had to listen to the sample to see if this was what I was looking for. I was thrilled to hear it was.

Length: 10 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-16-99
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 244 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
After the Robinsons - a minister, his wife, and their 4 young sons - are shipwrecked on a desert island, they must adapt to their new environment, which includes exotic birds and animals, but none of the comforts they enjoyed in their native Switzerland. Without modern conveniences or even clocks and calendars, the Robinsons must use common sense to build a home, find food, and tame the island's wild animals. Through their struggles and achievements, the courageous family not only survives, but finds a spiritual happiness that they never experienced in their civilized homeland.
    Editorial Reviews:
Some fathers are content with teaching their children through light conversation over, say, a game of catch. Others, like Johann Wyss, write an epic tale of adventure and survival. What was initially written in hopes that Wyss could teach his children about family values and the natural world, The Swiss Family Robinson has gone on to be adored by generations for its moral lessons and exotic drama. And with veteran narrator George Guidall's thrilling performance in this production, The Swiss Family Robinson is sure to entertain many generations to come.
    Critic Reviews:
"This is one of the dearest old books in the world." (W.D. Howells)
    Members Reviews:
    Awesome version!!!!!!!
You know the story never changes, but it doesn't seem the same with Mr. Guidall reading it. He took us to that island, every step of the way. We laughed when the cheldren laughed, cried when our hearts were touched. He gives so much life to this reading that our daughter thought that there were many people reading. Please do not hesitate to get this. When you feel like part of the Robinson family, you couldn't for better. A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    An Entertaining Novel...
which extols the virtues of moral behavior toward other humans and animals as well as industry and critical thinking in tight situations. Wyss devised this novel as something of an instructional manual for right living, a kind of didactic Robinson Crusoe, to be read and followed by his sons, but the wonderful adventure makes this also an entertaining and enjoyable read. A great classic for both children and adults!
    Well worth the time.
This is a particularly good book for younger boys. Much is here to help build character while being most entertaining.
    Excellent Listening!
The reader does an excellent job of voices and is never boring. Well paced and truly delightful listening.
    Great Listen
I enjoyed this very much. If you haven't read or listened to this book in the past few years, or ever, I suggest that you do now. It is a lot of fun.
