In Liberty Falling, Anna leaves the rugged countryside of Colorado to face the concrete wilds of New York City. As soon as she hears her older sister is gravely ill, Anna rushes to the Big Apple to sit at her bedside.
Between hospital visits, she relaxes at the park service quarters on Liberty Island and explores the crumbling ruins of Ellis Island, where thousands of immigrants once were processed. Rest escapes her, however, when a teenage girl mysteriously plunges to her death from the Statue of Liberty - and Anna herself suffers a dangerous tumble. The Park Service claims the falls could only be accidents, but Anna wonders if there is a common purpose behind them.
Nevada Barr's vivid descriptions and narrator Barbara Rosenblat's dramatic performance transport you to New York City to share in all the danger and the excitement.

    Just not up to par
I typically enjoy Nevada Barr stories with Ann Pigeon, but this one dragged for me. Too much of describing what she didn't like about New York, not enough to the plot. Much time was spent in the Hospital with her sister and former boyfriend...now interested in her sister. Only at the very end did any action get started. I love the reader, Ms. Rosenblatt.
Everything great except the cover picture
Loved everything about this book but felt the picture on the cover was misleading. The story has nothing to do with the Twin Towers falling as it appears the picture on the covers implies. I almost didn't listen to this book because of that but I'm glad I did.
    Re-read
A re-listen and as always enjoyed Rosenblatt's performance. Love Anna Pidgeon series even the second or third time around.
    GREAT entertainment

Wish I'd realised it was abridged
I really enjoyed the storyline, but only realised upon beginning the book that it was the abridged version. It felt a bit rushed, and like certain key parts were glossed over or thrown in quickly. Still, I did enjoy the story and would read more from this author/series.
    Good story, well delivered
Enjoyed this 2nd book even though it was abridged. New interesting characters brought in and learned more about the lovely insecure Will Trent. The readers were just great, loved the little nuances of voices sounding tinny on the phone etc. Can highly recommend.
    Fractured
Didn't fit this as entertaining or gripping as her other books - it was an average read.
    Great story, terrible reading.
I really enjoy these books but this is the worst reader I've heard. His female voices ruined this for me. Awful.
    Good story, kept me interested
This is overall a good story that kept me interested. Karin Slaughter is usually a good read and this is pretty standard. Good also if you've read Tryptic first to know the characters, but not essential. A solid performance as well, easy to listen to.

Despite his faults, Vicky doesn't believe he is capable of murder. Instead, she suspects that someone is trying to stir up a war between the Arapaho and Shoshone people, ripping open the still painful wounds of the past. The question is: why?
    Critic Reviews:
"A winning combination of interesting and complex characters, fascinating settings...and great atmosphere." (Denver Post)
"Delving into the depths of this magnificently crafted volume is like digging into your favorite layer cake; thoroughly delicious." (Publishers Weekly)

    Mixed bag
Again, the plot is interesting, as are the issues and locale, but the writing is still amateurish. Way too much soap opera, too many ugly characters, too much wailing and whining, misery and dysfunction, plus some cliche situations (like walking in on Vicky and John). And the solution is nonsensical.
AUDIO: This reader is so awful that she makes me groan. She does an adequate job with the two main characters, most of the time, but overacts or mis-acts with all the rest. Worst of all, she can't pronounce Shoshone, which is half of what the book is about and is repeated incessantly throughout.
    Eye of the Wolfe
I have to agree with the Marjorie who has also submitted a review on this book. Narrators make or break an audio book and this one is, and I hate to say it, terrible. I have read the entire series and the reason I have "read" them is because I cannot take the narrator. This is the last book in the series and I decided to purchase the audio, just because I love audio books. Ugh, sorry. Again if you cannot pronounce the words properly, they should not be narrating books.
As for the story itself, I wish she would lighten Vickie up and give her a backbone, come on. I love Father John and totally understand his background and being alcoholic, very good perspective on him. But again I agree with the other review in that some of it is to "soap opera ish" If Vicki "pushes her dinner away" one more time I swear!. I don't think that girl every eats! Also, in the last book Father John had his plane tickets in his hand and was leaving the reservation.... I am not quite halfway thru the book now and not a single mention of why he is still there?? I find same same story line in every single book of the series, Father John living minute to minute waiting for his marching orders. Give it up already. Obviously he is staying there, so tidy up that part and get on with it. Margaret Coel has written a good series and I will be on the waiting list for the next one, just not in audio unfortunatly.

    A lovely read
Peter Lovesey was a new discovery for me, and I immediately listened to the other books available on Audible. Wish there were more!! The characters are well developed and complex, the plot moves right along, and there's a human quality to the entire enterprise.
A Mystery of Many Layers Right to the End
This is the most outstanding entry yet in the fine series featuring Peter Diamond, a beautifully told, highly engaging story with shocks, twists and turns and stories within the story. I just wish Audible carried more of the series, and that I encountered this narrator Steve Hodson more often. He delivers a range of distinctive voices and accents, which bring characters fully to life. The author Lovesey created a rich and compelling character in Diamond, distinctive for his very human flaws. Nothing pat about the characters or the story, unlike the formulaic approach of lesser mystery/crime fiction writers. But while some of the Diamond novels have been thinner (such as Bloodhounds) this is substantial and satisfying.
Well paced and easy to follow. Good audible book
Not full of huge surprises, but an entertaining read and good narration. I would look at another book by this author/narrator combination.
    No Shakespeare here please
    Any additional comments?
This is an important part of the Diamond series as it goes through a turbulent period of the detective's life. Unfortunately it is not read by the narrator who does the bulk of the later books (Simon Prebble) who does an excellent job with character voices and especially the West Country accents (to my USA ears). I have heard Steve Hodson before and he has done some creditable work in other readings but his obvious Shakespearean trained voice does not do him any credit in this reading, and I found that it was grating to listen to.
The story has a number of twists and turns and misdirections, which may or may not fool the readers. In particular, the last several chapters attempts to misdirect the readers in a rather blatant fashion and drags the book out way more than necessary. Otherwise it is a very good read.
    *possible spoiler alert*
Just skip ahead to the confrontation scene when you figure out what's going on.
Cliffhanger to the very last chapter! Excellent!
I really enjoyed this book. We see the human side of Peter Diamond as he deals with tragic news, and soldiers on. The plot twists and false trails are well-laid and keep you guessing to the end. Narration was top-notch, again adding extra value to a thrilling tale!
This is another audio book I will enjoy listening to again!

    Best of the Abridged
Of all the abridged novels by JLB, this one is the best I have listened to so far.
Of course the issues with this book are the same as the other abridged editions. It should be a crime to publish a JLB novel in an abridged version. I wish Audible would replace all of them with Unabridged.
The end product of the abridgement is that the story is choppy and has many holes riddled throughout.
I REEEEALLLY wish this one were unabridged. I think it would have been terrific!

    Members Reviews:
    Another wonderful Leon.
This author is my favorite mystery writer. I feel like I know his detective his wife and kids. They don't get any better than this. The plot in this book is excellent, great characters, lots of questions to answer, all tied up by the end. Don't miss this one (or any other by Donna Leon.)
    Vicarious Venetian Visit
The author & narrator eloquently transport their listeners to Venice - for only one credit! It's a mystery immersed in Venetian culture - definitely delightful - not at all stodgy. In addition to the story of intrigue, there is humor & family life. The characters are such that you feel that you know (& enjoy) them. The narrator is awesome, obviously fluent in Italian. The language is melodic and is meant to be heard, not read. The story unfolds at a mellow pace - but what else would expect in Venice?
First I heard on Audible in a great series.
The first in this series that I read was "Death at la Fenice" and I was captivated. I have only been in Venice a few times but wish I'd spent more time. It's too bad that Audible doesn't have the earliest so you could hear it all in order but it's an easy series to jump into. Fascinating detail about hidden corners and famous places in Venice, a wonderful policeman as the main character who has a truly Italian family life, a talented narrator who gets the pronunciation right, if you like art, history, travel, mystery and good writing the series is terriffic.
    Enjoyable Brunetti mystery
What made the experience of listening to Doctored Evidence the most enjoyable?
It's always a pleasure spending time with Detective Brunetti, his family and colleagues. I enjoy the leisurely pace of the Brunetti mysteries, which are centered on human relationships and the Venetian setting, rather than being taut blood-soaked thrillers.
What other book might you compare Doctored Evidence to and why?
In terms of pacing and evocation of time and place, the Brunetti series might be comparable to the Thomas Pitt series by Anne Perry. However, the Brunetti series has a lovely contemporary Mediterranean tone, as opposed to the starchy Victorian concerns of the Pitt series.
What about David Colaccis performance did you like?
Colacci brings consistency to the Brunetti characters from book to book, as well as warmth and humor. He is able to portray the female characters' voices in a way that works; often a challenge for male narrators.
    Always engaging, especially engrossing
Brunetti is always fun. The character and plot development are complex.

    Critic Reviews:
"Donna Leon is the ideal author for people who vaguely long for 'a good mystery,' meaning a strong story with discreet violence, a wise detective who doesn't drink or brood too much, and a setting that's worth the visit. That Leon is also a brilliant writer should only add to the consistently comforting appeal of her Venetian procedurals featuring Commissario Guido Brunetti, an immensely likable police detective who takes every murder to heart." (
    The New York Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Inspector Brunetti continues to please
I have tried to "read" this series of books in sort of chronological order but have discovered it doesn't matter too much. The plot lines are stellar, the reader SO convincing, and the humanity of the characters encouraging and uplifting -- and in this book, like the others, the "bad guy" is not the cutout black and white character of so many detective novels. Once again, humanity abounds. Bravo, Donna Leon.
Donna Leon worth more than one read
With her awareness of current social concerns, a fine vocabulary, an exquisite imagination and characters who stay believable from one book to the next I find these a magnificent read!
    GREAT ITALIAN DETECTIVE SERIES!
I love this series about Venetian police detective, Commissarie Guido Brunetti! Donna Leon writes great crime mysteries while giving the listener an "armchair" tour of Venice. I've read quite a few in this series and, even though several are not yet available in audio format, each novel stands on its own so they can be read/listened to out of order. Again we have great plot twists with a surprise ending, delicious food, good wines, mini-Italian language lessons, and locale color. Narrator David Colacci is awesome with his command of Italian dialects, along with those of Europe and North African - the melting pot diversity of Venice. This is a great book - ignore a recent "hater" who recently has been randomly rating ALL of my reviews as "Not Helpful". Listen to the books I review and judge for yourself. I'm honest about MY tastes but you may see something different. It's called individuality! Try this one for size - I think you'll love it as much as I did!
Guido Brunetti and His "Crew" Never Fail!
Besides being in love with Commissario Brunetti which makes me look forward to every book and enjoy them, especially this one with this theme, I must emphasize that the narrator David Colacci must be credited with contributing tremendously to the enjoyment of listening to this intriguing and touching story. Colacci is a treasure as a narrator, one of the few who understands that a reader is conveying the author's creation, not acting on a stage! He also has a good, rich voice with no irritating edges to it. That said, I have loved every Donna Leon book I have both read and listened to.

Some of the Morse plots work in the abridged versions but this one somehow doesn't - masterly narration by Kevin Whately but the plot feels disjointed and fractured somehow.

    Truman
This is a great story... there are others that I would love to download if and when available. Her insight into the art and political world is amazing- perhaps it has something to do with her family history! :->) Her work allows the mind to see each character and follow the story until the very end! Great writer....
    Really Good Book
Would you listen to Murder at the Kennedy Center again? Why?
YES, YES, YES. The book is so well written that everything seems to flow. Every word belongs. Margaret Truman's writing has no gender, it has well placed words that keep you on the edge. Please try this one. Superior.
Which character as performed by Richard Poe was your favorite?
Tony, his portrayal of the character was so, so on. I have never heard Richard Poe read before, he's quite good. Cool, deep, and throaty voice. So easy to listen too. This was great.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
A bit too long for one sitting, so I did it in two. Sat up in bed until the finish. So Good.
    Any additional comments?
I sincerely hope that Audible.com finds a way to get more of the early books that actually follow this one. Books 1 through 8 and those that follow this one books 10 through 16. I personally would love to purchase these too. Habit forming reading.
    Entertaining Story
I believe I may have read this book some years ago. It was first published in 1989. Even so, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the audio book. I listened to it while doing household chores. I listened to it as I went to sleep. (I love the "sleep timer" on the Kindle Fire!). I listened to it when I wanted to relax for a few minutes.
The book was written before computers and "smart" phones were as prevalent as they are today. I am old enough to remember that time, so the story didn't seem "dated", as it might to younger people.
Most times I listen to audio books for entertainment. I want main characters that are smart, and sensible, and have interesting lives. I don't want to read long, detailed accounts of violence. I enjoy a story that has unexpected plot twists. This book met all my "requirements".
I will be listening to more books in this series.
    The reader ruined it
I love Margaret Truman and had read this book years ago. I wanted very much to listen to it but I could not get past the reader. He has a tooth whistle every time he says an "s" and it drove me up a wall. The producer droped the ball by leting him get by with it.
    Good read
    This was a good read.
