"With its familiar characters, cozy plots, and happy endings, this series remains as comforting as a warm cat in your lap on a rainy day." (Booklist)

    Disappointing
I don't know who is writing this series now, but this book and the last were soooo disappointing. I will probably stop reading the series. The first part of the series was so good, this book was a very pale imitation. I guess all good things must come to an end.
    Horrible Story-Telling
I'm sorry, but this is just an awful book as far as I'm concerned. I'm over an hour into the book and literally not a single thing has happened to move the plot along. Nothing. People meet, talk, there is a parade, a celebration, more meeting, more talking, and on and on and on. Where's the plot?
I really question the author's ability to tell a story at this point, and I certainly would not want to try any of her other books. Also the narrator is annoying and is part of the problem. I've gone through hundreds of audiobooks from audible, and this one I'd consider to be in the bottom 10% of the ones I have listened to.
I miss the author of this fine book series
Lilian Jackson Braun was the winner of many writing awards due to great writing skill. smooth and very pleasant style was extremely easy to get whisked into the world she created and feel like you were in the character's shoes.
    Love the cat who books
What can I say, I love all this Cat Who books. They are a light listen, murder and backstory without the gore, and I love cats.
I love reading The Cat who Dropped a Bombshell
Would you listen to The Cat Who Dropped a Bombshell again? Why?
I would listen to it again; it's like visiting my childhood hometown and seeing all of the people I have missed. the characters are so life-like that I have to remember they aren't real; that I really CAN'T VISIT THEM!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Cat Who Dropped a Bombshell?
    All
    Which scene was your favorite?
I loved KoKo jumping on the lawyer's head!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    No; I liked it all.

    Publisher's Summary:
How many hundreds or thousands of years ago was the man killed? Was his a ritual death, some kind of human sacrifice? These academic questions are intriguing, but of much more urgent interest is the second body found nearby, of a man wearing a wristwatch, hardly an Iron Age accessory. But his corpse does show strange similarities to that of his ancient counterpart. Both bodies bear signs of "triple death," a primitive practice in which a victim was ritually slain three ways, perhaps to appease some pagan trinity.
Nora and archaeologist Cormac Maguire, embroiled in a tumultuous love affair, must team up again professionally, and are soon enmeshed in the web of tangled desires and terrible secrets that surround this untimely death. When the triple deaths continue, Nora and Cormac know they are in the middle of a deadly game.
    Critic Reviews:
"Hart's language sings, and the gothic atmosphere lingers the way peat clings to the skin of bog workers." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Wonderful!!
Erin Hart does a grand job of developing this mystery with characters from The Haunted Ground. In this stand alone novel, you learn more about bog bodies and black market antiquities. You also learn a bit about historical beliefs and the Irish countryside. The narrator has a terrific Irish accent and you can easily identify the various characters as the story unwinds. My only mnor complaint is that the "conflict" between the two main characters is frequently mentioned and I'd just as soon relegate it to lesser importance or get on with the happy ever after. (I am a romantic at heart). I was sorry to have it end especially since the next novel is not due out for awhile.
    A Knotty Mystery
There are many knots to be untangled in this mystery set in the peat bogs of Ireland. The plot is engaging and the characters are interesting and deeply layered.
I bought this book, hoping that it might follow along similar lines as "Haunted Ground" - moving back and forth between a mystery in the ancient past and one in the modern day. And even though that is not the case, I thoroughly enjoyed the way the author tied the story together with a focus on ancient Celtic folklore & culture.
The narrator deserves special mention, as she successfully juggles a multitude of characters, keeping them all unique. Her command of the various regional accents is exceptional - as is her American accent for Nora.
    A really good listen!
As with "Haunted Ground", this novel started off slowly, and took a while to set the stage. It was well worth the wait though, as by about a third of the way through, I was totally engaged and couldn't wait to hear each development! This author does an excellent job of filling in details at just the right place and pace, and unfolding possibilities right until the denoument. The narrator is excellent. I'm looking forward to the next Erin Hart novel!
    More History Please
I loved this story, a good plot and characters, but I did miss more history on the ancient bog body found. I would have liked a bit more information on the findings and musings of these mysterious and interesting bodies found preserved in the bogs. The narrator is wonderful, her voice is so southing and her accents are great.
    Disappointing near the end.
For the most part, I enjoyed this book.

    Good entry in the series
I love this series, which is obviously cozy. This book is not only a good mystery, but moves the characters foreward in their relationships with each other

    Critic Reviews:
"The thriller, a high-tech suspense novel in which superior intelligence defeats money and power, is augmented by Frank Muller's flawless narration....Muller is particularly effective in distinguishing the voices and personalities of the characters, and gives each scene the drama it deserves." Sandford and Muller
This is early John Sandford and not as slick as his Lucas Davenport character, and thats both good and bad, I find it refreshing to see Sandford with a different main character and one that is different while at the same time shows the promise of the Davenport that is to come, the books moves quickly and smoothly into Sandfords world of not so nice people on both sides of the law. Also I love hearing Peter Mullers voice once again, among readers for me, Muller, Brick and Dale are in a league of their own and Mullers readings will greatly be missed. I give this audio book 4 stars for its storyline and narration, while holding back that 5th star only because it is rough around the edges compared to his new attempts, but i highly recommend it to all Sandford fans.
    Great Story
This is the first of the Kidd novels that I have listened to and I loved the story and the narration. Frank Muller does a great job voicing the characters.
Kidd is one of my favorite Characters
I love the entire Kidd series and wish Sandford would write more books in the series. I was happy to see Kidd make a cameo in the latest Prey book.
Wasn't what I expected, very disappointed
What would have made The Devil's Code better?
I couldn't even make it throught the 4th chapter. I would not keep my attention.
Would you ever listen to anything by John Sandford again?
If its anything like this book, NO.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Frank Muller?
    No
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Devil's Code?
Could listen to eonough to answer this question. The book was too boring.
    Any additional comments?
Not my type of book, very disappointed.
    A Good Read
I am a John Sanford fan. I thoroughly enjoy his work. I've read a couple of his books with Alex Cross as the main character.
There were moments in this book, however, where my attention waned. I was occasionally a bit bored - but, all in all, I enjoyed listening to "The Devil's Code" - ridiculous music snippets aside.(What's up with that anyway?). Frank Muller is still one of my favorite narrators along with George Guidall. I agree with the other review - he will be sorely missed by me and, I am sure, a multitude of other listeners.

"... a compelling study of the situations women in the service still must confront - and surmount - in order to survive." (Jeremiah Healy, author, Invasion of Privacy)
    Members Reviews:
Truth and Fiction at its best.
I found this book descriptively gory concerning the murders and descriptively perfect in setting up the atmosphere for the environment and settings for which much of the action takes place.
I believe the author was able to portray a finely woven plot using words that were fitting and very descriptive of the events unfolding. He did so in such a way that I was able to become a part the story as though I was standing nearby watching the events unfold.
Scary to think this book is insightful to what really happens in the world of Broadcast Media and Journalism.
I felt the descriptively sexy and exotic sections were poorly read. Perhaps the author could have read those sections with a bit more feeling so we could feel the mode instead of the Dragnet Narrative style he used throughout the book.
His narrative tone reminded me of the old Dragnet series and how the way they describe events as they were unfolding.
Overall I had an excellent listening experience on CD as well as on my IPAQ!
Recommended reading for the truth and ficton encompassed in this story.
    Nothing amazing
I rate this book as average. It was a decent read and a decent story, but it was just so darn predictable. The dialog between characters was cliche-ish at best. There really was no mystery for someone who is used to reading mystery novels. I assume that Bill wanted to "shed light" on how the industry works more than he tried to sit down and write a mystery novel. It would have been better if he would have just written a non fiction book and changed the names to protect people. Stories of events unfolding and building upon themselves are more interesting than reading events unfolding in a mediocre mystery novel. You are not wasting your money, but you may feel wanting by the end of the book.
Every business has cutthroat people who do bad things. This is no secret, but it would have been nice to find out more details so you could actually care about the characters.

    Publisher's Summary:
A grisly murder. A six-year-old eyewitness. A gun from the grave.
The Profiler's Daughter is a psychologically haunting thriller that combines murder mystery, love triangle, and family intrigue in one satisfying page burner.
Sky Stone was born into the wealth and privilege of Boston's oldest Brahmin family but chooses instead to follow in the footsteps of her deceased father, legendary FBI profiler Monk Stone. In the chilly morning hours before the Boston Marathon, when a beautiful university student is found strangled and mutilated, her body left at the base of Heartbreak Hill, Sky returns from self-imposed exile to investigate. Thirty-six hours into the investigation, Sky's world turns upside down when she is fired from the Homicide team. They pin the murder on an innocent man, forcing Sky into a life-threatening game of cat and mouse with the real killer. From the stately mansions of Beacon Hill to the flat scrubland of central Texas, Sky keeps the reader on a razor's edge, culminating in a no-holds-barred shoot-out.
The Profiler's Daughter, the first in the Sky Stone Thriller series, introduces a moody, enigmatic, and brilliant female sleuth with the fierce bite of Stieg Larsson's Lisbeth Salander. As adeptly written as Martin Cruz Smith's complex Arkady Renko novels, this thriller offers an intriguing plot, richly detailed characters, and an astonishing conclusion guaranteed to leave the listener begging for more.

    What a great find
Would you consider the audio edition of The Profiler's Daughter to be better than the print version?
I didn't read the print version. My wife did and told me I had to download Profilers Daughter as my next listen. I didn't need much of a push as I could tell from how she was reacting when she was reading, it was a real page turner. At least there is one thing we still agree on after 25 years of marriage - Profilers Daughter is a great read!
What other book might you compare The Profiler's Daughter to and why?
    Defending Jacob
Have you listened to any of Gabrielle de Cuirs other performances before? How does this one compare?
I'm not sure but I will look for others. It was a good performance. As you know if you listen to many books, a poor performance can ruin a great book. That did not happen hear.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I didn't want to stop listening. iI was frustrating at times as I listen in my car. When I arrived at my destination I would be frustrated because I had to stop....or I would keep listening as I did one night in my drive way from mi-night to quarter to one!
    Any additional comments?
I was impressed with the character development. Including one particular character I did not like. Steffen really made me despise the character. Not because of something they did...just the way the character"s personality came across. My wife said it was because it reminded me of my old boss. She is probably right. Steffen is descriptive - yet does not over do it just to impress us with an excess of words.

    Fun Western-set Mystery
This series is fun. If you will - a cozy, western based mystery series. With ex-sheriff, now melon farmer still being called by his old deputy.
The plots are solid, but have a lot of twists and the endings are rarely as expected. The narrator has a perfect voice and accent for these books and they fell like you are hearing the tale while sitting in a café over a cup of coffee or around a campfire.
    The Slickrock Cafe
Nice easy listening, a little humor and mystery. Love the narrators voice. I want to listen to the rest of the series.
Seemed to promise but never got there
What disappointed you about The Slickrock Cafe?
The characters, conversations and story line never got together. It was not interesting
What was most disappointing about Chinle Millers story?
The book seemed to provide information but no story that made me want to know more. More disappointing is that there is another book in this series.
What didnt you like about E. Roy Worles performance?
He seemed bored as much as I was. Most disappointing was using the Bill Crider name - I enjoy and have purchased all Bill Crider books - but the narrator made bill crider sound like Shirley Temple imitating an old man in one of the early way too cute movies. Even if he does sound like that what the h*ll was he doing in the story? This was so disappointing even at $4.95 overpriced
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    not that I could hear
Glad I stayed with the series
In my review of the first book in the series, I had a tough time rating it. The story was good enough to keep me reading, but that was sometimes a bit of a struggle. This is the same narrator, and he has developed far more inflection and better energy in his voice in this book. This story moves more fluidly, more effortlessly, and the author's humor had me chuckling several times. I'm looking forward to book 3.

    Publisher's Summary:
Now, with the national media calling for justice and a grief-stricken father seeking vengeance, Bishop and his FBI Special Crimes Unit find themselves in a unique situation. This time even psychic cops aren't enough to stop evil. Aid comes in the form of a fledgling civilian organization of unorthodox crime stoppers. Operating outside of any government oversight, without sanction or official authority, they are comprised of a membership every bit as talented and eccentric as Bishop's SCU - if not more so. And that is no coincidence. Bishop helped launch this organization barely two years before.
Dani Justice knows all about monsters. They haunt her nightmares and her life. But she never expected to find herself doggedly on the trail of a real flesh-and-blood predator so cunning, he's eluded the best law enforcement could send up against him; so deadly, he doesn't hesitate to kill even a senator's daughter. Or a cop.
Dani doesn't want to hunt this killer. She doesn't want to risk the life she's made for herself, or her hard-won peace. But she doesn't have a choice, because his bloody rampage has hit far too close to home, because Dani alone commands a weapon powerful enough to destroy him.
And because Dani knows something even Bishop doesn't. Dani knows how the hunt ends. It ends in fire. And blood. And death.
What she doesn't know is who will survive.

Not as good as I'd hoped...
I'm a huge fan of this series and had hoped to enjoy this a little more. The storyline didn't grab me as much as the others in the series-not enough Bishop and Miranda! I did find it to be an entertaining read. I do agree with some of the other reviews that the narration wasn't the best. Still, looking forward to reading the other titles in this part of the story.
    Superb
Best narrator I have listened to. She brings the characters to life, and keeps you wanting more.

Yes, Kay Hooper...Joyce Bean I would have to listen to a sample first.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Tried to follow the story line...but found my mind wondering, too many characters in this book.

An Excellent Installment in the Series
The Retribution is the 7th book in the Tony Hill/Carol Jordan series, and to my mind is one of the best. Other reviewers have lamented the "rehashed plot," bringing back Jacko Vance, a truly diabolical killer from "Wire in the Blood," the second book in the series. If you have not yet read "Wire In the Blood," I suggest you do so before reading this book. It's not that you can't follow the plot or enjoy The Retribution without knowing Wire In the Blood. It's just that you will more fully experience the horror, tension and suspense if you have already read the first book with Jacko Vance as villain.
As can be expected, Jacko's revenge on the people "responsible" for ruining his life by putting him in jail or for other perceived wrongs is cruel and often indirect, inflicted on the people closest to the people at whom his revenge is aimed. As a result of that indirect revenge, and the means used to accomplish it, I found this book to be intense, full of suspense, often frightening, and very emotional.
The vengeance wreaked by Vance creates situations which damage the Hill/Jordan relationship even further than before, and other suffer needlessly. Some people have found the ending quite sad. However, given the fact that another book in this series is scheduled to come out this fall, I believe that the ending is not nearly as permanent as it seems.
I look forward to reading more of this series.
Typically good Carol Jordan/Tony Hill book
The serial killer from book #2 in the series Wire in the Blood escapes from prison and exacts vengeance on the main characters. Kind of a gimmicky, TV-like ending I would've preferred the showdown between the killer and his final victim to be told in real-time rather than in hindsight and in more detail but overall its a typically good Carol Jordan/Tony Hill book. Bechdel test: pass.
    Great Series
I like to follow series. This is probably the most consistent in quality story to story. Thus far not a dud in the lot. I gave this one a 4 but for me the ending was not the best. I highly recommend this series for extended reading.
    Very disappointed
While I am a fan, particularly of the dr.hill/carol jordan series, I was dismayed with the rehashed plot line from a previous book (wire in the blood) and a completely uninteresting secondary plot that seemed as filler more than anything else. In the last few Tony Hill and Carol Jordan novels the author seemed to finally allow them to acheive some peace. They are wonderful characters. Here instead the characters act inconsistent with their growth. The novel turns on a "mistake" neither character would make. Thus, the premise of the book fails as soon as this "mistake" happens.

    Publisher's Summary:
A routine visit to one of Sam Acquillo's job sites becomes anything but. The home's owner, Victor Bollings, is lying in a pool of blood, the back of his head bashed in. One of Sam's closest friends in the cabinetry trade is quickly behind bars as the obvious suspect. For the cops, this is all standard operating procedure. But as it turns out, nothing about the case is routine, obvious, or standard in any way.
Sam and defense attorney Jackie Swaitkowski are used to an uneasy, though often reciprocal, relationship with law enforcement. But when the chief of police tells Sam to stay the hell away, this time he really means it. For Sam and Jackie, words like this are highly motivational, until strange new forces emerge from the shadows. Forces from well beyond the borders of Southampton, from worlds as sinister as they are unfathomable.
That doesn't mean Sam and Jackie still don't have a responsibility to defend the utterly defenseless: a Colombian immigrant with no legal status, no political power, and no alibi, with the full weight of the judicial system - local, state, national, and international - arrayed against him.
The eighth edition of the Sam Acquillo mystery series disrupts the illusion that the Hamptons are safely immune from the struggles that inflame much of the world. It's an examination of how fear of the unknown ignites prejudice and hate, overturning norms of decency and principle.
For Sam and Jackie, it's also a lesson in the interconnectedness of evil.

    Sam Acquillo Returns Even Better
With his eighth Sam Acquillo novel, Knopf ups the ante and his game yet again. Rather than limiting himself to The Hamptons and NYC, Knopf carries the action into South America and back. He also adds new depths to the continuing characters and their already complex relationships. Both those additions promise even stronger stories to come.
Sam Acquillo is a skilled carpenter and cabinet maker, but when Victor Bollings is found dead and one of Samâs frequent workers is accused of the murder, he takes it upon himself to find the real killer. Ernesto Mazzotti, the suspect, is also an illegal alien, which unleashes a hate campaign by the local bigot. Things become even more complicated when Sam discovers that the dead man may have been an intelligence agent and his death may be more than a local crime. Naturally, the federal agencies wonât confirm or deny that suspicion and try to shut down Sam and Jackie Swiatkowski, Ernestoâs firebrand attorney.
Sam and Jackie deal with the authorities with their usual combination of wit and toughness, along with local cop Russ Semple, another regular to the books. Knopf writes deceptively sharp dialogue, and these characters, who have known each other for years, play off each other like a smooth jazz trio.
So does Samâs longtime lover, Amanda Anselmo, who begins to experience personality shifts and memory lapses. They come from nowhere, and her diagnosis forces both her and Sam to examine their love and face their own mortality even as Sam juggles the case, his own work, and the demands of a hard-drinking life.
The journey is fun and the ending both logical and satisfying, especially since it promises even more to come.
    Tango Yankee
Chris Knopf does it again. I love the Sam Acquillo series, and Tango Down did not disappoint.
