Humorous quest adventure

In many ways this is a "typical" quest story: a young man seeks his way in life, meeting allies along the way, until he comes to the object of his search and fulfills his quest. And some of the elements used in the story are well-known fairy tale tropes, such as the seventh son of a seventh son.

And yet this story didn't feel "typical." I found myself laughing at some of the situations Ayden got himself into, but I also felt sympathy toward him as he kept trying so hard to be the thing that he really isn't (and doesn't really want to be). The author was able to keep me wanting to read (listen) to the story and keep me interested in what happened to the character--but more importantly, I really cared about what happened to the characters.

As a coming of age story, Ayden finds himself caught between what his family wants for him and what he wants for himself (even though he doesn't know what that is yet). His quest doesn't end the way he expects, and his conflict is far from over (lots of room for the series to expand). I enjoyed meeting his companions along the way, and I look forward to reading even more adventures.

I loved this book, the characters were really awesome and the story kept me guessing. I liked the way the main character grew throughout the book and how funny it was. I really enjoyed listening to this book and plan on listening to it again. I liked the way the plot flowed and changed with the book and how the author set it up for the second book. I really enjoyed listening to it and it reminded me a bit of Lord of The Rings and Harry Potter in that a young magic user goes on a quest and is trained by a more experienced wizard.

Original take on the 7th son of a 7th son story.

Ayden Dracre, the seventh son of the baddest wicked sorceress on their world, has some problems. First off, he's just bad at being bad. He has blond hair and blue eyes, unlike all the other sorcerors, who have dark hair and red eyes. He can't conjure any food other than apples and brocoli, and all his wicked spells fail. Even his wand wont stay evil looking.

A good listen, with the promise for more

I listened to this book at pretty decent pace. A couple commutes and evenings. I found enjoyed the world, the magics, and also some questions I was asking. The world is a bit different. No spoiliers... Necromancy is almost a dominant magic. The dead WILL rise, unless they are seen to by what I thought of as White Mages or Priests. Our protagonists stumble intro trouble, come of age in their way, and then seek to unleash their Wrath. I really enjoyed the setting and methods these things came about. I was not blown away, but I was definitely entertained! I am looking forward to the 2nd book. I haven't personally found books that explore Necromancy very much and I really like the expansion to the typical magic world by having Necromancy at the forefront of this world. I like where Chris Philbrook has us pointed at the end of book 1. Old questions tied up, new ones raised appropriately, and characters developed. Well done!

great book

this book was awesome. been a fan of chris philbrook since i read AUD this series dosnt disappoint. narrator took a little bit to get use to but was good.

FURIOUS TICKLING ENSUED

An excellent concept, not that well done. Zombies and Fantasy in a Medieval Apocalyptic World. I had high hopes for this, but it never panned out. Philbrook is a popular writer, so I thought he had the goods to pull this off. The book is super telling with no showing, the poster child for telling, not showing. The narrator is a Scott Brick want a be. Totally excited and dramatic at all times.

Not your typical coming of age story.

When he was 15, Eric had a bad dream, about a dark force coming after him. As he awoke, he sees that his house is burning around him, that a storm is raging around his house, and that lighning has struck the house and his village, and that he is the one that has summoned the storm. Thinking him cursed, he is cast out by the villagers, and for 2 years he has lived in the wilds, trying to avoid people. He breaks this habit and enters a walled town. A nice man offers to help him in the village, and leads him into a trap, where he is beaaten. during the beating, he loses control of his emotions, and summons the storm, Unfortunately, he cant control it. Even though the Lightning kills the muggers, it also wreaks havoc, death and destruction on the village. He is rescued by an older warrior named Alistair, and so starts an adventure that has to deal with the gods of their land, a monumental evil threat thought defeated, and personal challenges as Eric learns just what his "curse" is: Magic, and AListair starts teaching him to harness it. Along this journey, they meet a host of interesting characters, and travel a land raveged by the war the benevelent gods of Earth and sky fought against a mysterious evil that is more powerful than they are. It seems Eric has a bigger part to play that it seems, and the fate of the world may rest with him and his friends. With a fully realized world, a plot with non stop, well thought out action sequences, and realistic characters, this is a story any fantasy fans should be able to get behind.

David Stifel did a nice job narrating, bringing each character to life, and keeping the story flowing nicely. I especially liked his voice for Alistair, it really resonated. I am anxious to start book 2 now, and see where this talented author takes the story.

Fun and exciting fantasy

Epic tail about a boy on a journey to save the world. Fun characters and the reader's performance was delightful. Already making my way through part 2 which is also good!

So, this was pretty good! It was very engaging, the characters were good, and tempo to the story was good, too. I loved the variety of creatures and how everything interacted in this. The narrow escapes and constant running kept me hooked until t was over, and I mean that I was in it enough that a certain bit made me cry.

The narrator was okay. His voice and speed are pleasant, but I wasn't thrilled with his character voices. He had three voices: one for narrating (which was great!), one for men, and one for females + Eric.

Another great story in the series

outstanding!! this book just moves along and the story had me captured..... the characters are very well written and you either love them or hate them.

can't wait for the next one to come out...

A good sequel, but not sure who it will all tie up

I enjoyed this book, even though I found the timeline between characters to be off. It seems that the main character travels about a couple weeks, while other characters travel around for months. There is a new evil character that seems a little all too powerful, and many new subplots. I also wish the magic was a little more explained since it is becoming an even bigger part of the story. In the end if you liked the first book you will probably like the continuation of the story.

The Dragonkin Trilogy begins to expand as a new villain enters the series who could be the instigator of the troubles erupting in the world. Rowan and his crew seek the help of the mysterious Sylves, elven like people who have remained reclusive. I have found this series very entertaining and am still surprised at how little fanfare there is around these books.

Craig Beck does a wonderful job with the narration.

just too confusing. narrator made it worse.

this was the most confusing audible I've listened to. Couldn't figure out what was going on, who was who, or where they came from. i kept having to rewind and that didn't help either. the narrator seemed to exacerbate the problem. I think I would have enjoyed it better if I'd read it instead of listening to it.

Great series.

The story is intriguing and keeps the reader wanting more. I found myself staying up late reading, devouring pages like a hungry termite at a lumber yard unable to control itself around all of the delicacies at the ready. This series is a must read for all fantasy book fans. Truly an original and brilliant concept on dragons. Well written and well thought. The editing however could have been a bit better, but not bad enough to take away from the epic story the author laid on paper. On to the next series about Requim, May the characters in this series be as intriguing as Benedictus, Lacrimosa, Gloriae, Agnes Dae, and Kyrie were. "May our wings forever find your skies"

The final chapter...and it's impossible. (SPOILERS)

So, I read the first novel in this series, Blood of Requiem, and was thoroughly impressed. So obviously, I read books two and three. And it was just...impossible. I say impossible because I could not feasibly understand how the main characters didn't die of exhaustion. Moving here, moving there, pining for freedom...it was exhausting, and not in the good, edge-of-your-seat, Lord of the Rings kind of way. And then there was the villain, who, other than being very one dimensional and creepy, was just too powerful. The beings that he had under his command kept getting more and more formidable, and yet...the good guys still win with a handful of dragons and griffins? Sorry, it was just too unbelievable for me. Yes, you can be arrayed against a huge enemy and still prevail...but...really? I read the description of his army in the last chapters and just rolled my eyes after a certain point. He made the enemy too powerful, and yet also easier to defeat than a stale bagel.

I would say, yes, read Blood of Requiem, but if you don't want to spend the next few days reading the sequels that will honestly destroy the first book for you, just read the synopses.

The mighty has roared and the evil finally get their's

I am so glad that the dragons finally get their day and took care of that evil tyrant of the desert. She had done the dragons soo wrong because she held onto a dream or possession of her childhood love which she turned it to be something else.

This book was well done in my opinion and the evil queen should have been roasted a long time back but I am glad some still lived to carry on their ways & traditions.

I am hoping in the next series the author puts the same amount of exitement in these new ones as he did the first 6 books.

New cast of instantly beloved characters

Don't get too attached to any of the characters in this series. A funny thing about "Elemental Blessings" is that, while each individual book tells a complex story with many characters, only one or two characters continue from one installment to the next. A minor character in one becomes central to the next. So while the story continues as one long narrative, the reader's perspective changes dramatically, and there are always many new people to meet. (Who's story will form the center of book four? My money's on Leah, or maybe Leah's daughter.) This latest installment is as satisfying as the others, and the mystery is resolved with a few surprising turns. Thoroughly enjoyable!

Utterly satisfying

Jeweled Fire is an absorbing tale of court intrigue & flirtation & page-turning mystery/adventure. Princess Corene is a selfish, manipulative little minx of a beauty who gradually becomes a good person. She learns compassion & generosity; the meaning of friendship (she never had any before); & the truly important traits in a future husband. This was my first audiobook. I loved it! I walked my dog for many extra miles because I couldn't wait to find out what happened to these irresistible characters. Ever since I finished the final chapter, I find myself wondering what Corene, Foley, Stef & the rest are doing now.

. Advice to listeners: write down the names & identities of characters as you meet them.

. Request to Audible: Please do not label the book's introductory materials as "Chapter One" ... because then you list the actual Chapter One as "Chapter Two," and so on. So your list of chapters is always out of whack with what the narrator is telling us. Confusing when I needed to search for a specific chapter or scene.

. Bottom line: I wholeheartedly recommend Jeweled Fire as an entertaining (& ethically educational) gift for a girl or young woman, and as a delicious, completely satisfying treat for adults.

An all right listen for the price

This series was recommended to me by a number of Urban Fantasy aficionados, so when the first audiobook went on sale for $1.99, I decided that now was the time to start Hailey Edwards BLACK DOG novels. I was drawn to DOG WITH A BONE because of its short length, Fae inspired story line, and I liked Nicole Phillips sample sound clip, although it should be noted that this is the only volume thats available in this format, the other three installments are currently read-only.

Thierrys voice as the MC was on par with this genre however, it did come to my attention that she is only eighteen, and for the most part that wasnt a turn-off as her character didnt display any of the usual New Adult tendencies. The only niggle was when it came to her relationship with Shawher instructor turned partner. The age gap left me feeling a little uneasy about their romance, especially considering that hes an authority figure AND an incubus. I couldnt help but question whether the basis of their love was genuine or coerced.

Nicole Phillips girlish tone was an appropriate fit for Edwards heroine, albeit without a second installment to back-up her performance, its difficult to say whether I would have enjoyed listening to her long-term. Otherwise, I liked her interpretation of the action sequences, and even though there wasnt a whole lot of world-building in this book, the protagonist didnt similarly suffer. Thierry has a lot to prove with an absentee father, avoidist mother, and unpredictable powers. I look forward to her showing us what shes got in HEIR OF THE DOG.

I think this would have been better if it started much earlier. I didn't feel very connected with the characters. I'm curious enough to get the second book though.

nice paranormal story, definitely YA series

pretty good start to series. it's more a YA series that I probably would not have bought had I known. interesting view point on fairy & fey and storyline was intriguing. solid narration. just teen feel trying to go a tiny bit older but a lot of that is due to main heroine being 18

it has now come to full circle

there were no mysteries left unsolved and no lose ends left untied. the ending was very satisfactory. I just wished the epilogue has a few more lines after, but other than that I have no other complaints - ok except for a few instances in which the narrator didn't have the appropriate emotion at certain sections of the book (thankfully it's very minimal).

More please!

I love this series and highly recommend it.

Losing the Summer fairy had me sobbing.

My only complaint is that I really wanted much much much....maybe mostly for this to be Kierran's story. I can only hope that is coming next.

Oh and I feel Razor should have stayed with Kierran in the end. While I liked that he went off to adventure with Kenzie, in my heart he belongs to Kierran.

I felt quite fulfilled by the way Julie ended this series. I can close the door and move on.

I really enjoyed it. Fun and entertaining. It wrapped up the series well. Fun to see old character too.
