    Wonderful Fantasy Mystery
I loved the complexity of the novel and the depth of characters. I read first the prequel, By Divine Right, and found that it added value to The Shock of Night. Other reviewers have mentioned that The Shock of Night was slow moving because it contained more prose than dialogue. This may be true, but I found Mr. Carr's prose well worth reading. It added depth and a level of sophistication not found in many of today's popular novels. If you are in the mood for a beach read that doesn't delve the depths or require much reflection, then this is not the book for you. However, if you're into books that take the time to develop decent plots, deep characters and make you think, then I highly recommend this book.
Many complex story lines, intrigue with credible surprises, very exciting and wholesome content
Many complex story lines, intrigue with credible surprises, very exciting and wholesome (evil recognized as evil, good called good) in content. The inherent violence and depictions definitely push the minimum age of this book to mid-teenager range or above. There is plenty of violent situations; however, the gory descriptions are more sparse. Darker issues of rape and abuse are present--however, not with enough description to educate an innocent, but with enough candor to challenge the more aware audiences.
This is an excellent series, looking forward to the next installment!
    Loved this!
Patrick Carr is simply amazing. His characters are deep and real and likable. His adventures are intense. And to top it all, he keeps throwing new twists into the story. I'm left guessing and wondering and thoroughly mystified until he solves it all at the end. Then I'm left wanting more. My only complaint is that Carr doesn't write fast enough!
Recommended for readers of fantasy and sword-fighting. I'm a girl, but my brothers love this book just as much as I do. Light romance but clean. Several scenes of intense drama and some violence (but not as bad as some of the movies we watch; think the violence of Avengers or Iron Man).
I recommend reading By Divine Right (e-novella) first, since it explains a lot of the nuances to Dura's story.

    No time for a breather
Those, like me, who nervously thought book 2 would take many chapters before an adrenaline rush would begin to take hold will be pleased to learn that there will be little time to rest before the pace picks up, as the true manifestation of the malevolent players of the dark arts begin to reveal themselves and display their cruel and bone-chilling methods of harvesting towns of souls almost with impunity. There is also ample an amount of intrigue and betrayal to sate the appetites of even the most fantasy-aware readers.
John D. Brown again create an amazing mixture of sadness, exhilaration, deep anguish threaded with thin strands of hope against impossible odds and constant fear of impending doom. Alex Wyndham excellent narration skills regulates the emotional rivers of the telling to always keep the listener ever hopeful but knowingly one misstep from ill-fate.
If you liked book 1, you'll be even more pleased with book 2.
    It just keeps getting better!
Wow, what an incredible series! I would say that it easily compares to both "The Wheel of Time" and "The Stormlight Archive." If you liked either one of those you'll be right at home here. :D
    Good book
This book has a lot of characters so it can get confusing, but it's a good book anyways. I have been getting into these books lately to escape this world and this one really does take you somewhere else. I don't think it's the absolute best book ever and at times yes you can get lost in the details, but the story is good and entertaining and lots of action. It's really good to listen to.
    Enjoy
    Story Gets Better
If you could sum up Curse in three words, what would they be?
    Fun, exciting, adventure.
What other book might you compare Curse to and why?
Maybe The Silent Tempest series from Michael G. Manning.
Have you listened to any of Alex Wyndhams other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, The Silent Tempest series from Michael G. Manning. It was after listening to these books that I looked for other books narrated by Alex Wyndham. Both series are well narrated.
    Any additional comments?
This book was a good sequel to the first as thing really got moving, and the action picks up. A few new characters are added including a new bad guy who gets some action as a protagonist.
Overall I'm liking this series so far, but could still use some more world building.
    Enjoying this series
Fun storyline. Lots of twists, turns and a bit of mystery. A variety of interesting characters and a lots of action.
The narrator is one of my favorites.

    Awesome narration!
The character weren't exceptionally dynamic, but the story was engaging enough. I listened to this on audible, and found that this is possibly the best narration I've heard yet!
    Wonderfully outlined and executed fantasy
What starts out as abruptly fractured chapters soon becomes clear as a means to introduce the tale's disjoint characters along with their backstories early on. As the saga's name implies, this fantasy focuses on the dark arts, however, its usage is not only exercised by those with evil intent, although there is plenty of that. There are also those with this talent who have banded together to resist those people who are bent on limiting those who can practice this magic to a select powerful few. Additionally, there is an unknown dark presence, long ago forgotten, that has returned to reclaim its former control over all humankind.
While there is a strong element of coming-of-ageism, that is only one aspect of the novel. There are substantial threads involving substantive familial relationships and, of course, the evilness that is ever-present.
John D. Brown proves himself as an excellent writer who can weave a complex, and often poignant, tale. Alex Wyndham is very adept at voicing this novel's full breadth of characters from adult men/women and adolescents.
I liked this first book so much that I didn't hesitate purchasing the next two novels even before finishing this one. So much so, that I fast-tracked the next novels ahead of others I've had in waiting.
    Brilliant
Grew on me at a steady pace and left me with no choice but to start on the next book immediately. Great narration helped bring the characters to life in my mind.
    Awesome read!
I absolutely loved it! I couldn't stop listening and now that it's over I need more!
Unique Take on an Old Story.
I thought it was great. A bit wordy at parts, but I was hooked.

Probably the weakest of the core trio
Honestly, I thought the first two were fine, stand-alone books, with no need to revisit the saga. This third book does not utilize Geofrey of Monmouth's History of British Kings, but does make reference to the later French Romances of Arthurian lore. This change in foundation does hurt the story, as it loses the original gritty feel, but was inevitable as Geofrey wrote down all the surviving British legends (with his own additions). There simply wasn't anywhere else to look. The characters have a very different feel to them, which will annoy some readers. Having said all that, Mary Stewart wrote superb fiction and I cannot countenance removing two stars from what is otherwise an excellent drama.
    A Whimper, not a Bang
The last installment in Stewartâs Arthurian trilogy was a bit too prosaic for my taste. While some of her interpretations of the legend were very interesting, such as there being two wives named Guinevereâ Dare I say it? I found the whole thing downright boring and had to force myself to finish. Marion Zimmer Bradleyâs âThe Mists of Avalonâ is still my favorite version of the legend.
    Excellent series!
Having loved the Arthurian legends since I was a small child, this series is turning out to be a wonderful prequel and elaboration, with some surprising details. The author includes some of the actual historical basis regarding how certain cultures moved around the that area of the world, and against each other. The characters are more developed, in a personal way, than any other book I've read on the subject. The story is engrossing, even though I know how it all turns out. At least I think I do.
    GREAT OLD SERIES
A old series but a great read. I read series over 20 years ago and my daughter has read 3 times over same period. My wife was looking for a good series & I suggested this one, but forgot my daughter still had them and I purchased them again. My wife has read first book and is into the second & is really enjoying them also. Be sure to read the series in order.

This whole series is one of my favorites, and Mary Stewart was an author from whom many today could learn a great deal. The series was perception-altering back when I first read it as a teenager, and is still engrossing and wonderful with every subsequent re-read after all the years in between. I love this series, and I love every book in it.

    Members Reviews:
Chaotic, violent, and funny in a dark way.
"The Dragon Lords: Fool's Gold" is a humorously dark misadventure featuring five misfits; An unlucky farmer, a crazy drunk old man, two mercenaries; a psychotic lizardman and his sociopathic teammate (though she is trying to be better), and a scholar trying to overcome dark impulses triggered by magic.
By bizarre coincidence these five unhappy characters bump into each other one day and decide to risk everything and attempt to rob an evil dragon that rules the region. It's crazy, suicidal even, but greed and revenge trump common sense and they actually follow through. Of course, nothing goes right and bloody chaos happens in a horrifying / amusing domino effect that leaves a listener guessing what will happen next.
There is a lot of gallows humor, cursing, and descriptively gory bloodshed in this book, so if you were expecting some lighthearted quarky adventure story where a bunch of characters with a few quarks slowly learn to become better people by working together then, well, this is mostly not that. While it is funny in a dark way, lots of characters die in this book in horrible ways and the featured party of characters are comprised mostly of selfish rogues with obvious mental instability that pretty much stay that way throughout the story. Still, the over all effect is oddly entertaining.
The narrator, John Banks, does a good job bringing out the characters, their voices as individuals, and emotional attitudes for this audiobook. He also has a good range. The lizardman and crazy drunk old man voices are particularly impressive.
This book is recommended for those listeners who enjoy dark yet goofy humor as much as action packed gore in their fantasy stories. This book also ends on a satisfying conclusive note even though it has a sequel.
    foul language
had way more cuss words then I like but the story its self was good.
    Great story,Great performance
Do yourself a favor and pick this one up! This story renewed my faith in modern fantasy. Funny, great character development and most of all a great performance!

    Anxiously awaited!
What made the experience of listening to Earthsea the most enjoyable?
I hove long loved this series and now can listen to it in a new way.
What did you like best about this story?
It is a well-done adaptation. As such it condenses the overall story into a presentation worthy of the long cherished series.
Have you listened to any of Toby Joness other performances before? How does this one compare?
While I had not previously heard Toby Jones perform, I will be looking for more of his works.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
While you could enjoy this in one sitting, it matters not for you will enjoy it nonetheless.
    Any additional comments?
    Chapter 6 will awe you!
    disappointing
pacing poor. highly abridged. narrative not straight foward enough. lacks the punch of the bbc's previous Earthsea adaptation.
The adaptation of Earthsea I never thought I'd see
I liked this very much. The voices were lovely; I could hear the affection between Ged and Tenar. Despite some (heartbreaking) cuts of content, I felt they got to the soul of the books and the simplicity of the last few lines was beautiful.
    Fantastic
What did you like most about Earthsea?
It's a great audiobook for people who are already familiar with the Earthsea material, simply because there are less explanatory passages and more action. However, this does not detract from the quality and I highly recommend it for fans of the series.
Awful, unless perhaps you know the story already
If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
Folk who know the story already...hopeless to follow otherwise..confusing..tried twice but still confusing
Would you ever listen to anything by Ursula le Guin again?
Yes, very much. I'd just choose a more 'straight' version where l might just follow the text.
What didnt you like about Toby Joness performance?
I just got confused about who was who, the plot, the characters.....just lost it. So difficult to follow and hard work.
What character would you cut from Earthsea?
Hard to say, didn't really get any of them
    Any additional comments?
I know this is a well known, liked, and respected book.

    Members Reviews:
As with the rest of the series, an excellent book
Plenty of action and conflict with interesting characters.
The only thing that irks me about this one is the ending. It felt like a marvel movie. The main conflict ends with a few unresolved issues but the book continues on with winding down the story. Then another character serves the role of Samuel L Jackson and pops in to point out these loose ends but doesn't really offer a conclusion to them. The problem with this is that these loose ends really can't lead to any further story progression. Their resolution may be addressed in some later book but it will most likely be in passing like referencing a historical account but that feels like a cheap way to end it considering these loose ends.
Overall a very excellent book, but the ending leaves things hanging.
    Edit:
After thinking about it I realized there were a couple of other things in this book that just seemed wrong.
    *Spoilers ahead*
The previous book built up the conflict between Whill and the Other so much with the Other gaining full control at the end. You'd think with so much build up, this would be a major plot point of the fourth book. It wasn't. Not far into the book Whill essentially says, "Hey, Other. I love you." and the problem is "resolved" (the Other is locked away again because apparently accepting the fractured part of his mind means locking it deep down inside again because that worked so well last time...).
After retaking control of his body, Avriel pretty much says she preferred his crazy size and nothing ever came of it. This seems strange to me. I imagine if your lover said they preferred it when the psychotic part of your mind was in control rather than you, your relationship would feel some strain.
The whole giving up the power to the other elf also made no sense. Whill's first interaction with her was the elf trying to deceive him into giving her the power and making her a god.

    Awesome new author
Autumn Birt did some amazing things with her story. I personally loved that she thought out the elementals abilities so well. I remember a part where I was ecstatic thinking "Oh my! Did she just do what I think she did?!" And then she waited to verify it. It was awesome.
Starts off slowly, stick with it, it's worth it
If you could sum up Born of Water: Elemental Magic & Epic Fantasy Adventure in three words, what would they be?
    Magic, fantasy, love
What did you like best about this story?
Lavinia and Darag's proposal/marriage scene was very touching. And the battle sequences were very suspenseful and kept me on the edge of my sea
Which character as performed by Thom Bowers was your favorite?
I loved all the characters so it's a hard choice. He really brought the characters to life, giving each a unique voice

Niri is a Priestess of water that failed to identify an elemental during the festival. She wants to make amends to her order and goes on the hunt for this girl. But when she finds Ria she realizes there is more to this girl than what she originally thought. So she goes on a quest to find out the truth about Rias powers and her own. Lavinia and Ty are brother and sister and friends to Ria, they go along to keep Ria safe but end up learning more about themselves. But this is a race against time since the Curse has been released to hunt down Ria. But secrets about the church are going to be exposed and Niri is going to learn that although she is the weakest of the elementals she has more power in her than she knows.
When elementals are discovered, they are taken away from their families and indoctrinated into the church. This is the only life Niri has known for years and at first those teachings is all that she sees. But as the story progresses she learns that there is more to the story of the church and it is not as wonderful as she has been told. Ria has this amazing power but she is scared to use it because of the Curse hunting them down. I loved watching her grow throughout the story.
Ty has his own secrets and at first hates Niri.
