    good selection
Hard to believe someone would write bad review about this. An excellent selection with very good narration. Normally quality goes down a bit with various volumes. Happy to say that is not the case this time. Can't wait for next set!
    Public Domain
These are old stories taken from public domain. You can get these free on a app on your phone. I did not realize till after I bought that these were free stories. The narrators are volunteer amateurs. Out of 29 stories I found four I could give five stars, 8 four stars, 11 three stars, 5 two stars and one no stars. Matter of fact this comes in two parts like most books and the whole first part was terrible. I also wish that Audible would list editors for their collections. Some editors are better then others. Silverberg is a great editor, while Horton is not so good. Whoever was responsible for this collection, should be man enough to put his name on it, so I know to avoid his sloppy work in the future.
    volume too low
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would only recommend the written version (you can't miss with these classic authors). The volume on this title is almost 50% lower than on John Caro's books on Lyndon Johnson. I will probably not be listening to it and will buy the e-book version instead.
Fun way to explore several authors
Where does Favorite Science Fiction Stories rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It's ok. Many of the stories are quite engrossing and/or leave me wanting to hear more of a story (this is a series of short stories so some feel cut short)
Which character as performed by the narrators was your favorite?
The characters did not have the most amazing performance.

    Title: METAtropolis: Cascadia
Author: Jay Lake, Mary Robinette Kowal, Elizabeth Bear, Ken Scholes, Karl Schroeder, Tobias Buckell
Narrator: Rene Auberjonois, Kate Mulgrew, Wil Wheaton, Gates McFadden, Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Jay Lake
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 54 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-16-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 915 votes
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy
    Publisher's Summary:
This provocative sequel to the Hugo and Audie Award nominated METAtropolis features interconnected stories by todays top writers of speculative fiction performed by a galaxy of Star Trek stars.
As the mid-20th century approaches, the Pacific Northwest has been transformed - politically, economically, and ecologically - into the new reality of Cascadia. Conspiracies and secrets threaten the tenuous threads of society. The End of Days seems nearer than ever. And the legend of the mysterious Tygre Tygre looms large.
METAtropolis: Cascadia is the creation of Hugo and World Fantasy Award nominee Jay Lake; Mary Robinette Kowal, winner of the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer; New York Times best-selling author Tobias S. Buckell; Hugo Award winner Elizabeth Bear; Aurora Award winner Karl Schroeder; and critically acclaimed author Ken Scholes. The team of narrators is any Star Trek fans dream: Rene Auberjonois (Odo); Kate Mulgrew (Capt. Kathryn Janeway); Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher); Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher); Jonathan Frakes (Cmdr. William Riker); and LeVar Burton (Geordi La Forge). Jay Lake, who also served as Project Editor, introduces this stunning sequel, written and produced exclusively for digital audio.
    Editorial Reviews:
Its the 2070s. The United States is no longer united, and the breakaway territory of Cascadia in the Pacific Northwest has created its own myths and realities. In this sequel to the first METATROPOLIS anthology (2008), six award-winning science fiction writers share a brash, finely detailed world. Each narrator is a recognizable Star Trek series alumnus. This is a bonus, especially in the cases of Wil Wheatons reading of "Byways" by Tobias Buckell and Gates McFaddens reading of "Confessor" by Elizabeth Bear. Their voices are so familiar that they envelop the listener in the fascinating unfamiliar territory. Its like listening to old friends tell new tales. These are well-crafted novellas about a brave, new near-future.

    Some good, some bad
When I saw that Audible did a follow up to the original METATropolis, I was interested to see what they had done to one of my favorite programs.
"The Bull Dancers": Extension of "Forests of the Night" the original leadoff. Pretty decent story other than the fact that it went on for much too long (3 hrs). Rene Auberjonois was decent, however most of his characters sound like Odo from Star Trek.
"Water to Wine": A wonderful tale that fits well in the Cascadia cycle. Definiteley a good choice of narrator
"Byways": Extension of "Stochasti-city". Didn't work as well as the other stories, but Wil Wheaton definiteley got the same rhythm/pacing that the original had.
"Confessor": Right length, however all the characters (male and female) all sounded the same, so identifying which story line we were on is difficult.
"Deonand": The Bad of the book. While the text is spot on, Frakes is not the right person to be narrating this segment. His butchering of Gennady (pronounced Go-Knot-ee) Malianov is so disjointed as compared to "To Hie from Far Cilenia"
In short I can tell which narrators had gone over the previous work (if there was one) and which did not.

I get the anthologies to read different authors and hear different narrators. I liked this anthology better than Down these Strange Streets although the subject matter was the same and many of the same authors. I feel these stories were shorter and if you weren't already familiar with the character they provided enough to enjoy the story. Also there was a variety of stories, some romance ,some stories funny, some were scary some were sad, some were twist on history so something for everyone provided your into monsters or "the unknown". I wish audible provided a more detailed table of contents though so I can go back and maybe look up other things from the authors and/or narrators that were particularly entertaining. as an example, I particularly liked the story by Rachel Caine and Carrie Vaughn. I magine the Kindle version has all that. whisper sync is perfect for books like this, you can read some or listen or read and listen.
Bought this for Dresden, loved the rest!
I bought this just for Jim Butcher's story (which was actually about John Marcone, not Harry Dresden) but I enjoyed every story. It's very rare that I find a compilation like this where every story is gripping, action-packed, and well written but this one has it all. I enjoyed that there was very little romance and a lot of battling monsters. I will definitely listen to this collection again!
Get this just for P.N. Elrod, not for Jim Butcher
All of the entries are excellent reads, but as we all know the story narrated can ruin it for you.

    Publisher's Summary:
A collection of stories written and read by Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Award-winning author Neil Gaiman:
Harlequin Valentine "was originally written as a short story. Lisa Snellings made a Ferris Wheel with strange creatures in each car, and writers wrote stories, one for each character. I was given the showman, a little Harlequin who took peoples tickets."
Boys and Girls Together "was written in a hotel room in Boston. It rained outside, and I was certain I was telling the world something very important."
The Wedding Present "is a story hidden in my book of short stories, Smoke and Mirrors. Some people who have copies of Smoke and Mirrors have skipped past it, and do not know that it was there. Do not tell them."
The End "is the kind of thing I find on my hard disk from time to time small, gentle apocalypses that I do not quite remember writing."
    Members Reviews:
Almost worth it for one story
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I loved "The Wedding Present," a 30-minute story about love and loss. The other four short stories (two under two minutes, one under three and the other about 20 minutes) were ok. However, as others have pointed out, there was a LOT of filler in the form of drums, including a full 16:24 minutes of drumming at the end as others have pointed out. Each of the other tracks, even the VERY short stories, also contain some drumming.
I had trouble rating this because I would have given "The Wedding Present" five stars, the other short stories an average of three, and the drumming a one star.
I almost would have considered this purchase worth it if it had JUST contained "The Wedding Present," but with the brevity of three of the stories and 16 minutes of drumming, I have decided to return this purchase because I feel the packaging was so misleading.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The couple in "The Wedding Present" was lovely.
Which character as performed by Neil Gaiman was your favorite?
Neil Gaiman is a wonderful narrator and he was no different here. My low rating on performance was for the excessive drumming, not Gaiman's performance.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
It would be a very short movie!
    Any additional comments?
Remove the final track, and lower the price significantly, and this would be a decent purchase. As is, it is misleading.
    DRUM SOUNDS
Amusing tales. Why is there an an annoyingly FULL 16 MINUTES of disconsantant drum sounds at the end? I kept expecting it to "break out into story" but it never did.
It spoiled it for me...leaving off a good listen with such a disquieting feeling.
    Where's the content?
I was supremely annoyed by the waste of space for droning drums. I bought an audiobook, not a new age song. I love Gaiman's work, but I felt cheated by the lack of content in this program. I was so upset after listening that I really considered asking for a credit refund.
    Not a Good Value
While the story was good and Gaiman always performs well, this was definitely too expensive for so little product. Not only is it short, there was a 16 minutes instrumental track at the end for no apparent reason.
    Please stop the drums
What did you like best about Telling Tales? What did you like least?
I understand the goal of the music was to accentuate the stories but it didn't work.

A wonderful free gift from Audible
That was the best narration I ever heard! It amazed me when I realized it was the author's reading--it sounded like he had professional training. The novella was very suspenseful and the really drew me in. It was nice to finish the story in a little over an hour, too.
    left wanting more
good story with a unique to the telling. will listen to again and again. the end
    Delightful
The story was Delightful. Enjoyed and hung on every word. Wonderful and looking forward to more.
Good, but I would prefer a different narrator
The narrator creeper me out a bit. I really enjoyed the sound effects. It really added to the mood. good choice.
    what?!?!
This book made no sense at all. The recording uses eerie music in an attempt to heighten the dramatic tension that is altogether lacking in the text. The author totally fails to provide any motivation or rationale for anything that happens in the narrative, and I finished the book feeling utterly unconvinced and confused..

    Great stories, great narrators
Of all the anthologies of classic science fiction stories available on Audible as of when I'm writing this review, this collection has the most consistently entertaining stories and the most listenable narrators. It's just great!
    Some of the best
I tend to be wary of sequels because they often are not as good as the original. Happily that is not the case here. This is an outstanding collection of stories by some of the best sc-fi authors. Having many readers - all good - also helps. Five stars!
    some good, some great
As with all collections some are just good, enjoyable sci fi. In this one most are great, some even enticing me to find out the name of the author and read more. Definitely a 5 star read (listen)
    Dusty magazines
These are from the early days of SF magazines -- from the fifties I think. Some of the stories are not much more than a setup for a punch line. "But I Can," is the predictable last line of one that otherwise lacks drama or interesting characters.
A point of my interest was in how the "future," the 1970s, 1990s, 2000, were envisioned a half-century ago. It gave me a sense of being in the past -- when the stories were written -- and experiencing what the aspirations and fears of that time were.
The stories themselves weren't very compelling, kind of below average.
