    Publisher's Summary:
The three sister-moons rose from their sleeping place and into the clear winter sky.
A rustling came from the bracken near me. If I hesitated, I would fail my test. I would disgrace my family.
That was not the way of a Lupine. I drew my knife. Two feet of serrated steel slid silently from its leather sheath. My ears flattened.
From the shadows crept the ebony-furred, low-slung shape of the panthorr. Fearsome eyes gleamed in the dark.
    My test.
Mawla, the young Lupine warrior of the Ett of the Grays, takes her tribe's test to ascend to the role of High Priestess. But a completely new surprise awaits her this night.
For her destiny lies not with the defeat of a deadly predator. Instead, it involves the rescue of a pair of aliens. Aliens who travel among the stars, ones whose offspring will forever change Mawla's future.
"Vala Staffwielder" is a short-story prequel to the sci-fi western novel The Adventures of Amanda Love.

Fifteen Short Stories - Sure to Delight
If you're searching for Nicholson books and reading reviews, you'll no doubt run across my name. I'm making it my mission to read everything this author writes, and in appreciation for the hours of enjoyment received, I always try to leave a review.
This collection of short stories is different in that the variety is astounding. Many authors write in one genre, and that's that. But there seems to be no end to the variety of genres Scott can and does write, and write well. This collection is perfect as an introduction, or for times when you don't want to get embroiled in one of his longer books (those you simply can't put down). Even in his short stories, the prose continues to delight:
"Her bones rattled like a cage of sticks, her flesh a leathery prison, her body as light as the birds that picked over the battlegrounds at sunset. Ibeja accepted the mating the same way she accepted the dying moon, the gray emptiness of the fields, and the dust-choked riverbeds that stretched bleakly beyond the village." (The Way of All Flesh)
Seriously? And that's just in the first chapter of the first story, and 14 more to go. The stories are separated into categories, with a linked table of contents for easy navigation. Phantasmia - 7 stores and Dystopia - 6 stories; with an Afterword and a Bonus Story. If "The First" is your first Nicholson, it surely won't be the last.
Good Author. Have most of his Books
Good Author. Have most of his Books!!! Can't wait to read more!!!
    FIRST, dont miss this.
My new life on Facebook and the meeting of so many talents has led me to the writing of Scott Nicholson, a man who's writings I admire for the handicraft placed into the writing. His collection of short stories raised me to a new level and a new appreciation of his talents. These stories seduce, entwine, and lead you into the possible future of the human race. Divided into two sections of Phantasmia & Dystopia, they give you a diary of doomsday and a world falling apart, a beautiful and inspiring cathedral song dripping with blood, a sculpturer offering his highest bid to human art, a stained glass picture of Mother Mary and those she loves, tellers who measure your life with no possibility of overdraft, & those lost "on the wire" preferring that which could be.

    Romance not paranormal
What would have made Hotter Than Hell better?
For me, more story line less sex.
Has Hotter Than Hell turned you off from other books in this genre?
I think this book belongs in romance section not paranormal
What about Teresa Williss performance did you like?
Performance very good. The reason I finished book.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
When not in a long drawn out sex passage stories were ok.
    Any additional comments?
My fault. Purchased collection because I really like author Kim Harrison. Figured this would be like charlaine Harris collections. Harris collections have Introduced me to a great many of the authors I follow today.
I Preordered kim harrisons next story, but Very disappointed with this collection.
    give it 2 stars ......
I am rarely so harsh on a book, but this one greatly disappointed me. The narration was terrible, not that she didn't have a pleasant enough voice, but the characterizations and the flow of the dialoge were so lacking. There was no difference between character's voices, male or female, young or old, etc.....just reading, not storytelling, and very irritating reading at that. The stories are rushed, more in an effort to squeeze a plot, mostly very thin and lacking plots, inbetween what was sad to mediocre sex scenes. Worth my credit, No, worth the cash, No.... Enough said
    Believe the reviews.
I read the reviews prior to ordering this complications of authors. I am currently reading Kim Harrison's 'The Hollows' series. It is listed as book 4.5. This book has nothing to do with the series except that it has a super natural being in it. It's an irritating story that is a standalone with none of the characters in our books. it does show what happened to the wish Ivy got a few books prior. ivy should have used the wish because it was wasted on this girl. I'm gonna ask for my credit back.
    Worst narrator
This narrator is the worst I've ever listened to. The stories were pretty good. A few were just boring, but overall I would have loved listening to this if it wasn't for the narrator. She changes volumes randomly throughout the story so you have to crank it up only to be deafened when she decides to start borderline yelling. And she takes words like "sweater" and says them in the weirdest ways possible. "Swa-teer" She has random pauses, and just overall doesn't get how to narrate.

Title: Playing Solitaire and Other Stories
    Author: Mark Shainblum
    Narrator: Elizabeth Klett, John Greenman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-27-12
    Publisher: Iambik Audio Inc.
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy
    Publisher's Summary:
Three outstanding pieces of short fiction from award-winning science fiction and fantasy author Mark Shainblum, collected for the first time.
"Playing Solitaire" - Rachel Steinberg was just a nice Jewish girl from suburban Montreal. She was never really Solitaire. She never asked for superhuman powers, nor the relentless, grinding cycle of violence and alienation that came with them. Rachel allowed herself a glimmer of hope when Carl said he loved her, when he swore up and down that her secrets didn't scare him. But that was before he saw her glowing like the north star, before he ran in terror just like everyone before him. Probably not the ideal moment for an omnipotent, 3000-year-old evil slumbering under the Island of Montreal to awaken and wonder what it should do first.
"The Art of Solitude" - Mary-Ann became desperate when her history-player boyfriend took up bartending. Nobody with a scintilla of self-respect drank alcohol anymore, it was just so...so...industrial. Not only was Quent turning their dogs into alcoholics and their apartment into a seedy dive, he was getting in the way of her art. Something had to give, and in this case, it was the laws of physics. Mary-Ann purchased a top-of-the-line Solitude fold-heart, and retreated to her own private universe to paint in peace. What could possibly disturb her there?
"The Break Inspector" - Missouri dirt-farmer John Gray had never regretted a kind act in his life, although truth be told, he would have had little enough to regret in any one of his 55 years. But oh how he wished the milk of human kindness had been completely drained from him that terrible, cursed night. With every fiber of his being, with every drop of blood in his body, John Gray wished he had never found the mysterious stranger on his prairie. "The Break Inspector" is an unofficial sequel to Mark Twain's "A Murder, a Mystery and a Marriage", and a top-ten finalist in the International Mark Twain Writing Competition, 2001.
    Critic Reviews:
"People have argued that it will be impossible to imagine what life would be like on the other side of a Singularity because humanity will be so fundamentally altered as to not even be human anymore. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try. Especially if it gives us excellent tales like 'The Art of Solitude'." (James Palmer, Tangent Online)
    Members Reviews:
Original approach to an old concept
Playing Solitaire takes an original approach to an old concept (which shall remain unnamed to avoid spoiling the surprise). Shainblum builds tension and interest in his characters, then pops a surprise on everyone. It's a well-written, well thought-out story.

    Publisher's Summary:
Lady Dame Honor Harrington - starship captain, admiral, Steadholder, and Duchess - has spent decades defending the Star Kingdom of Manticore against all comers. Along the way, she has become the legend known as "the Salamander" from her habit of always being where the fire is hottest... and also from being a national best seller (Ashes of Victory).
But it's a big universe, and Honor's actions affect a lot of lives, not all of them human. And their actions affect her - a lesson "Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington" learns years before rising to command rank, when a desperate battle against "pirates" who aren't quite what they seem begins her brilliant career. Closer to home, in "Changer of Worlds" a secret that the alien treecats have kept from their human friends for hundreds of years is about to come out... and completely change the relationship between the two species forever.
Meanwhile, Eric Flint weighs in with "From the Highlands". Honor can't be everywhere, so when the People's Republic of Haven tries to stage a political assassination on Earth, Anton Zilwicki - husband of one of the Star Kingdom's most revered military martyrs, and father of a young woman who is clearly a chip off the old block - steps into the breach... and takes the opportunity to settle some old scores along the way. And finally, Esther McQueen and Oscar Saint-Just square off for their final confrontation in Noveau Paris in "Nightfall".

Great to learn more about Honor Harrington
This is a collection of short stories that fill in some of the gaps in the Honor Harrington series. You must have read the series or else you will be lost. The first book in the HH series starts with Honor as captain of her own ship. This story tells of Honors "snotty" cruise as a Midshipman. We can see the beginnings of her development into a great naval officer. Glad that they kept Allyson Johnson narrating the story of Midshipman Harrington. Johnson is the voice of Honor Harrington. The short story about the tree cats tells about when Harrington returns to Sphinx and Nimitz takes Samantha to meet his clan and encourage some of them to follow him and his kittens to Grayson. In the series it never explained how they got the other tree cats to come with them.
"From the Highlands" tells the early story of Anton Zilwicki and daughter Helen. In the series we saw the death of Anton's wife Captain Helen Zilwicki who is escorting a convoy of Manticor ships (one carries her husband and child) when the PEEP hit the convoy.
Helen (daughter) is kidnapped in this story (often referred to in the series) and the Countess or Tor, Anton, Jeremy X and Victor Cachat rescue her. We are introduced to Berry and Lars who was featured in another sub-series.
The last short story is about Admiral McQueen"s over throw of Oscar St Just's PEEP government.
All stories fill in information to the main series and also leave room for lots more stories.
All the narrators did a good job.
The Eric Flint story alone is worth your credit.
This is another anthology in David Weber's Honorverse. If you are unfamiliar with the Honorverse, this is not the place to start. "On Basilisk Station" is the book to start with. I will review the stories individually:

    Another great Honorverse book
I've enjoyed most of the short story compilation for the Honorverse series including this book.
    1) Promised Land by Jane Lindskold. The Story of Michael Winston's snotty cruise reveals how he met Judith. Good back ground for later events in the main series.
2.) With One Stone by Timothy Zahn. This is a story with Honor as Captain of a heavy Cruiser Fearless on escort duty. Rafe Cardones is detached from Fearless to chase down a mystery ship. This is a free standing story but in the main Honor series she does do a lot of convoy escort work.
    3) A Ship Named Francis by John Ringo-- I know this was suppose to be funny but I just could not stand it. To me it was a terrible story.
    4) Let's Go to Prague by John Ringo. Mullins and Gonzalves are 2 members of covert insertion team working for ONI. This is also a stand alone story but gives back ground to the work of Admiral Patricia Givens spy program.
    5) Fanatic by Eric Flint. Introduction into Victor Cachat who is a Peep spy and trouble shooter. Cachat plays big role in the later Honor books and in the sub series Wages of Sin.
    6) The Service of the Sword by David Weber. A substantial story about Abigail Hearns' snotty cruise aboard RMS Gauntlet. Abigail is the first female Grayson to graduate for Saganami. She is mentored by Honor. Abigail goes on to star in "Shadow of Saganami". I really enjoyed the background provided by this story. I think I enjoyed this story the most in this book.
Can not get enough of Honor and her world.
I liked every story in this collection.
    PROMISED LAND by Jane Lindskold
I read this story when it originally came out, and I recall that I liked it, but it was fairly grim. I wasnt feeling like listening to anything grim this week, so I skipped it. However, it is the story of a girl who is kidnaped and enslaved by Masadans. Queen Elizabeths younger brother Michael gets in on the action here.
WITH ONE STONE by Timothy Zahn
On the Honerverse time line, this takes place between On Basilisk Station and The Honor of the Queen. Honor has been given command of a new starship to replace the one destroyed in On Basilisk Station, and she and her crew are being sent on anti-piracy duty in Silesian space. However, Honor isnt the main character in this story. Rafe Cardones is. The story is well written. My rating: 4 stars
A SHIP NAMED FRANCIS by John Ringo and Victor Mitchell
This story is short. It is also horrifyingly funny. My Rating: 3.5 stars
LETS GO TO PRAGUE by John Ringo
This is what happens when two hotshot secret agents make their vacation plans while under the influence. It is funny and well written. My rating: 3.5 stars
    FANATIC by Eric Flint
As I was listening to this today, I kept thinking what a good writer Eric Flint is. I really like this story. It tells the story of Victor Cachat.
