Great Resource for Beginning a New Meditation Practice or Deepening a Long Standing One
As a wellness author and holistic doctor, I recognize and teach the importance of having a regular meditation practice in one's life.
I also recognize the challenges. Although I have meditated regularly for many years, I still experience challenges. How do I find the time? How do I keep from being distracted? Can I try different approaches and still have an effective practice? How can I get my ego out of the way? This book does an excellent job of addressing all of those questions.
I especially liked the section, "Bringing meditation into your everyday life." There are many opportunities to meditate as we go through each day. This chapter gives some excellent ideas for how to take advantage of chores, exercise, eating and other activities as opportunities meditate.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is seeking to begin or deepen a personal meditation practice.
Hits all the fundamentals and makes the practice accessible
I found this book to be a very useful guide for beginning and sustaining a meditation practice. The fundamental aspects of the practice are made easily accessible and enable a beginner to get started with a solid foundation and then dive deeper into learning more about these aspects as they wish. For experienced meditators the book provides a great overview of the various meditation styles and practices and some great tips for deepening and modifying practice. I've read a lot of books on meditation and in this book really enjoyed the descriptions of the meaning and origins of the words, the connection between yoga and meditation (which I believe is too often lost as the practice becomes commoditized), and the simple and clear description of the essence of the practice. Most importantly perhaps I felt the description of what one might experience when meditating was very consistent with my experience, and having a sense for what to expect will help people to relax and enjoy the practice rather than worry that they're not 'doing it correctly'.
Stuff to consider
I thought this book had a nice layout and gave the reader a lot to ponder during and after reading. If you are new to the practice of meditation and are interested in yoga, this would be a goo book to start with. This book had a friendly, easy to understand quality that I personally found to be appealing. This was a relaxing book that set the stage for meditation. I recommend it if this a subject you are interested in.
What a wonderful introduction to meditation
What a wonderful introduction to meditation. I am now meditating..though not as regularly as I hope to. It convinced me that my time in meditation could be whatever I want it to be.
