Publisher's Summary:
An invaluable source of inspiration and guidance to help leaders understand themselves and their own barriers to success.
For centuries, we have learned what's not taught through our own experiences and the stories of others. Even today, only 3 percent of leadership development occurs due to classroom training and coursework. In fact, for most managers, the penny drops only when we are at the end of our careers. R. Gopalakrishnan, author of the best-selling The Case of the Bonsai Manager, has many stories to tell. With 43 years corporate experience across countries, each story recounted here has taught him a valuable lesson in some intuitive way. Each one is narrated here for you to allow you to reflect and learn for yourself how to improve and develop.
Using the framework of the Tata Management Training Centre (TMTC) and the Center for reative Leadership (CCL), Gopalakrishnan explores:
When the Penny Drops: Learning What's Not Taught encourages you to reflect on yourself. It will help you learn by identifying the success mantras embedded in you and releasing the lessons that might be entrapped within yourself.

Book on how Experiential Learning with personal anecdotes from TATA Group Director - Indian & Emerging market context
I came across R Gopalakrishnan's writings over 10 years back & was stuck by their authenticity & their applicability. So when he came out with his new book 'When the Penny Drops' now, I rushed to get my copy.
'When the Penny Drops' lives up to the expectations. Mr. Gopalakrishnan talks about learning in this book and explains how 97% of learning happens informally, intuitively, on the job. And then he describes the most important moment in learning - 'when the penny drops'.
He explains that for a manager - there are three worlds - the inner world, the world of relationships and the world of `Getting Things Done' through others. He then builds a framework using some very vivid examples from his work life to develop his story. The book aims to encourage you to reflect on yourself. It will help you learn by 'identifying the success mantras embedded in you and releasing the lessons that might be entrapped within yourself'.
My key takeaways from the book:
1. Most of the times, we are unable to hear the penny drop - trapped as we are by listening & learning disabilities. However, when mind is really open, we can hear it & get precious insights into self.
2. The more experiences you have, the more hard knocks you get, the more you are likely to learn
3. Learning positive things is easy, negative is difficult. Negative things are best learnt by self-reflection.
4. Everyone feel that they have been unjust treated by their employer when it comes to promotions / rewards.
5. Training programs are good to have - particularly the all-expense paid overseas ones - but they cannot help beyond a point. They help a bit, at most 10%, but the balance 90% must come from within.
6. Creating the challenge, the adversity and a pressure packed situation is not difficult to do. Ensuring that people learn something useful from it is the most difficult part.
7.
