The ALF Experience: Improving Our Schools and Communities
Everything We Know About Leadership is Less Than We Still Have to Learn captures the essence of the ALF experience and points the way how leaders can and must work together to address important issues facing their communities. Education is a particular example. The core values which drive ALF are the ones that should guide the leaders of our schools and communities as they meet the challenge of demonstrating that factors related to poverty, race, and class can be overcome and all students can become college and career ready.
If we are going to raise the level of student achievement and close the achievement gap, we are going to need leaders who can work collaboratively across private and public sectors to identify and implement the right improvement strategies. This book directly addresses those some of those strategies and will help all of us in educational leadership rethink how lead our local school systems.
As a superintendent of four different school districts, it was through my involvement IN ALF that I learned about the value of
collaborative leadership and how to work more effectively with my colleagues and key stakeholders. . My years with ALF have fundamentally changed the ways in which I work with other leaders and taught me the power of collaboration and the importance of including the perspectives of others in key decision making processes. In that sense this book is not about leadership. It is about the core values that should guide us and the work we must do to bridge differences, listen carefully to the perspectives of others, value diversity, and move from polarization to collaboration.
A Great Introduction to an Organization Ahead of its Time
The strengths of this book are: it's short, clear, and a great overview of 30-year-old organization that has been ahead of its time. I'm a member of ALF Oregon Class 21 and I enjoyed reading this book because it gave me a greater appreciation of the ALF experiences I have in common with over 4000 Senior Fellows throughout the nation. I personally found ALF to be a transformative experience for me and now I understand the strategy behind the activities and values. This book has value for people inside and outside of the ALF network because it challenges all of its readers to get involved in online dialogues about themes and issues raised in the book. For a nation that is starving for effective leadership at all levels, this book is apropos. Just like my American Leadership Forum experience, I'm getting out of this book what I'm putting into it.
I think the ALF experience needs to be shared with more people, let's start with some of our elected officials!
