Terrible, amateurish book. I thought I was picking up something with new, fresh insight. I pushed myself through the allegory of Prince Richard in Chapter 5 and couldn't take any more. Want better reading on leadership, organizational development, etc? Read Jim Collins; Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner; Seth Godin; Stephen Covey; John Maxwell, and others.

The New "Gold Standard" for Leadership

Full disclosure - the author provided a review copy of the book, and I have known him and his work for a number of years. I first heard of him when he was leading the development of a Leadership Coaching program at what was, at the time, the largest coach training company in the world.

In Ripple the author is shifting the leadership framework from one of making things happen by putting the right people in the right place to one of cascading influence. The Ripple approach to leadership is "more about influence and enabling the right things to happen" vs. making them happen. As when you skip a stone across a lake, Ripple leaders are alert to how each ripple affects another, and how the objects (events, constituents, beliefs, culture) cause the ripples to shift and intersect again with the original ripples. AND, the importance of the ripples that extend beyond the company or organization - that a key part of the role of the transformational (Ripple) leader is to intentionally cause ripples that extend beyond the official "work" they do. It's not that the ripples "happen" to go beyond, adding value to their communities, but that this is by design.

In this model of leadership, the stone you skip across the lake (the visible action you are taking) isn't as important as the ripples that are created. That's the true measure of leadership. Your cascading influence beyond individual actions you take or guide.

The subtitle of the book "A Field Manual For Leadership That Works" is a perfect description of the style of the book and how to use it. It includes specific field-tested models, along with exercises to help you understand and apply this new framework. I've worked through some of the exercises and I wouldn't say they are easy, though they are simple. To do them correctly, and to create the most desirable impact you want as a leader, you have to be unerringly honest with yourself. Your "state of being" plays a significant and long lasting role in your effectiveness as a leader, perhaps more so than what you actually do, so to be anything less than honest with yourself is to be faking your leadership. (I don't think the author would have said it quite that way, but that's the gist of it for me.)

The book includes hand-drawn diagrams, handwritten notes in the margins and personal stories, making the whole topic and each of the 6 leadership principles more approachable and understandable.

Very practical

I thought the book was very good and practical. It was a fairly short easy read, but incredibly applicable. If you are in a profession where you would like to move up the corporate ladder, I highly recommend it to you. For me, even though my leadership is totally volunteer based, I thought that there was good information for life.
