Members Reviews:
Not what I had expected.
I purchased this book solely on the publishers blurb, had I read an excerpt I certainly would have passed this one by. I am all for experimentation with style, structure, and topics but after reading a few chapters I felt the style to be too chaotic and convoluted for my taste. I struggled to make sense of the first few chapters, feeling like I had just been dropped in the middle of a play with no background whatsoever. The more I read, the less interested I became. Eventually I just felt it to be too pretentious and not worth the time to continue reading. I still believe the premise of the book to be good, but do not feel that I need to force myself to read something that doesn't connect with me at all.
More, please
A headlong tumble into quick wit, word play, madness, delirium, dreams, magic and queerity. Fantastic writing.
Duncan's words don't always make immediate sense but feel rather like being immersed in a private landscape, a dumping ground of personal symbolism and a wealth of mythology reinvented by a unique mind. In that sense, it's not for everyone, but if you enjoy a fusion of mythology and modernity, if your interests are more Borrible than Womble, if the Hypnagog is where you live, then, go read.
Pirates, and werewolves, and scruffians, oh my!
I have loved everything I've ever read from Hal Duncan. This was no exception. Hal Duncan has such a way with words, even his prose sounds poetic. A werewolf and his handler hunt the undead, we learn the origins of the stamp, and of course I won't soon forget the story of Matelotage and Mutiny. I loved seeing names I recognize from Duncan's other works, Jack, Joey, Guy, and of course Puck. A very solid collection of stories!
Another winner from Hal Duncan
I have thoroughly enjoyed everything I've read from Hal Duncan, and this was no exception. How can you pass on pirates, werewolves, scruffians, and the crew from The Book of All Hours? I particularly enjoyed the story about the werewolf and his handler, hunting the undead. The homoeroticism was top notch. We need more fantastic queer lit, like this. Thanks to Lethe Press for giving it to us.
Solid collection that doesn't quite live up to the title
My review of Scruffians! was posted on Strange Horizons (http://www.strangehorizons.com/reviews/2014/06/scruffians_stor.shtml) on June 27, 2014. Click the link to get to it. Suffice to say, at four stars, I enjoyed the book. Also suffice to say, I would greatly enjoy seeing Duncan further explore the urban fantasy world he establishes in these stories.
