July 1910: The grisly remains of Cora Crippen, music hall singer and wife of Dr. Hawley Crippen, are discovered in the cellar of 39 Hilldrop Crescent, Camden. But the Doctor and his mistress, Ethel Le Neve, have vanished, much to the frustration of Scotland Yard and the outrage of a horrified London.

    Gripping
I could not put this book down. The masterly way John Boyne see-sawed between historic and current date lines was expertly brought to life by narrator, and character actor, James Daniel Wilson. This book kept me guessing to the last chapter. A great example of how factual incidents can be turned into exciting fiction. This is a must!
John Boyne's subtle narrative ruined by Narrator
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
The book maybe, this audio version not at all. I listened to John Boyne's most recent book and thought it was the best audio book I had heard, the writing had such subtle humour and pathos to it, the narrator just amplified it. So with great enthusiasm I bought this audio book and found that it has been utterly ruined by the narrator's lack of skill. Laboured reading, and caricature voices which are just grating. Such a shame
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
    Had to give up.
What didnt you like about James Daniel Wilsons performance?
He just read the words of the narrative, no nuance at all. Then the voices of the characters were just caricature like, and totally failed to give Boyne's briliant subtle humour and story telling the depth it requires. So disappointed I gave up.
    Excellent reader and intriguing story
John boyne is the excellent story teller . I bought this audio book and finished listen within 2-3 days eventhough I was busy. James daniel wilson is an excellent reader and I now start looking for his narrative audio books.
    Very entertaining!
If you could sum up Crippen in three words, what would they be?
It took me a while to not feel like I was chopping and changing direction in this book (not necessarily a criticism) but then I got hugely into it. Another John Boyne masterpiece.
What about James Daniel Wilsons performance did you like?
I did enjoy James' performance, although I would say if anything, he spoke rather slowly. But definitely enjoyable and a good performance.
    I loved it.
Great story. Gripping. I was captured by Dr Crippen personality. Boyne is an excellent writer. Outstanding narrator.

    Title: Snuff
    Author: Terry Pratchett
    Narrator: Stephen Briggs

    Language: English
    Release date: 10-11-11
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3007 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Humor
    Publisher's Summary:
For nearly three decades, Terry Pratchett has enthralled millions of fans worldwide with his irreverent, wonderfully funny satires set in the fabulously imaginative Discworld, a universe remarkably similar to our own. From sports to religion, politics to education, science to capitalism, and everything in between, Pratchett has skewered sacred cows with both laughter and wisdom, and exposed our warts, foibles, and eccentricities in a unique, entertaining, and ultimately serious way.
At long last, Lady Sybil has lured her husband, Sam Vimes, on a well-deserved holiday away from the crime and grime of Ankh-Morpork. But for the commander of the City Watch, a vacation in the country is anything but relaxing. The balls, the teas, the muck - not to mention all that fresh air and birdsong - are more than a bit taxing on a cynical city-born and -bred copper.
Yet a policeman will find a crime anywhere if he decides to look hard enough, and its not long before a body is discovered, and Sam - out of his jurisdiction, out of his element, and out of bacon sandwiches (thanks to his well-meaning wife) - must rely on his instincts, guile, and street smarts to see justice done. As he sets off on the chase, though, he must remember to watch where he steps... This is the countryside, after all, and the streets most definitely are not paved with gold.
Hailed as the purely funniest English writer since Wodehouse (Washington Post Book World), with a satirists instinct for the absurd and a cartoonists eye for the telling detail (Daily Telegraph, London), Terry Pratchett offers a novel of crime, class, prejudice, and punishment that shows this master at his dazzling best.

    Perfect Pratchett
If you are already a fan of the Disc World books dont waste time reading the reviews just buy this book and start enjoying. If dont you dont know the series, this is a very good book and stands pretty well alone, but I might recommend you start with Guards Guards then listen to the Fifth Elephant and what I believe is Pratchetts best book so far Thud before moving on to Snuff. This story picks up just about four years after Thud when the splendid Vimes is forced to take a vacation in the country. Vimes being Vimes he unearths all kinds of evil plots, but I wont spoil your enjoyment by going into them here.
The pace of the story is leisurely and packed with marvelous detail and observation, the parallel with the Blandings novels of Wodehouse is well deserved. There are a couple of oddities which fans might scratch their heads at. For example in Unseen Academicals we are first introduced to the Goblins and in that book they were a scarce almost extinct people, in this they are as common as roaches. In Thud the Summoning Dark possess and then leaves Vimes, in this book its back in Vimes giving him special powers and giving evidence with a Welsh accent. Having said that the hard core fans will more likely be amused and intrigued by the games Pratchett plays rather than annoyed. He revives and extends characters he merely sketched in other books, bringing together a cast which spans maybe six or seven of the Disc books. All in all its splendid entertaining, satisfying writing, beautifully read and I am enormously pleased to see that the health problems Pratchett is suffering are not impacting his genius.
    Briggs & Pratchett--reliable transportation
First of all, there are a few narrator/author matches forged in listening paradise, and this is one of them.

    Publisher's Summary:
Born in the South of India during a storm that destroys her village, Parvati is immediately recognized as a child with mystical abilities. As Parvati grows she feels compelled to dance as if music is a part of her body. But whenever she does, magical things happen. Regarded with fear and suspicion by the rest of the village, Parvati and her mother have a hard life until the day a master of classical dance comes to see her and offers her a chance to study with him.
After years of sacrifice, Parvati is on the verge of realizing all of her dreams when she meets a young man born on the same day as she. He is someone who has magical abilities of his own. Now, for the first time, Parvati questions what her true destiny is. Suzanne Fisher Staples, author of Shabanu and Haveli has created a lyrical novel steeped in the traditions and customs of India. Christina Moore provides the perfect voice for Parvati, a spirited and dedicated heroine.

The words are dancing like Lord Shiva's tandava
It's hard to describe this novelette in a few words; I just admire it too much. First of all, I'm very fond of Lord Shiva, and it was my original driving factor to buy the book. Second, the book is about a twelve year old girl (named after Lord Shiva's cosmic consort, Parvati, of all names!) who is very fond of dancing, and always wants to dance. The third: well, I'm weak towards India-themed books, for the spices, curries, and the jingling of payal (anklets) are usually mixed with spirituality at a certain level.
This book did not disappoint me at all. It took me a while to read it, for I had many things to do, and perhaps because the story did not pick at a quick pace anyway. But after the first chapter, everything flew quickly and amazingly. I was particularly amazed at how Suzanne Fisher Staples brought Shiva and His tandava (dance) to life through many levels: from the sandalwood statue that had captivated little Parvati since her first day in this world, through the veena that suddenly humming in every time Parvati lit a fire, and through Parvati's determination to dance. Having learnt Bharatanatyam myself (though, alas, I am by no means a devoted Devadasi), I am familiar with various dancing terms in the book. The book went further to evoke my longing for dancing, as I read how Parvati suffered through all physical and mental difficulties to perfect her dance. Learning Bharatanatyam is not easy, let alone mastering it!
I was a bit confused with the time frame of this story. First, I thought it was during the 18th century or something. Then, the cars and busses were mentioned, and I thought the story took time during the first days of India's independence. But then, much much later, I found out that the time frame was a few years after India's 50th independence, or about 1997-1999, about the same time the story was written.
As I said, I am very fond of India-based stories. Yet, though I haven't read a lot, I found that most of the books that I read would have an ample dose of irony and suffering in it; most probably because I didn't take the Indian chick-lit. Thank the Goddess that it was not the case with `Shiva's Fire'. It started with suffering, but it ended with happiness and liberation. When a boy named Rama was introduced into the story, I was bracing myself for another typical runaway-bride story: that Parvati would have to choose between dancing and the boy.

    Publisher's Summary:
From Ragtime and Billy Bathgate to World's Fair, The March, and Homer & Langley, the fiction of E. L. Doctorow constitutes a towering achievement in modern American letters. Now Doctorow returns with an enthralling collection of brilliant, startling short fiction about people who, as the author notes in his Preface, are somehow "distinct from their surroundingspeople in some sort of contest with the prevailing world".
A man at the end of an ordinary workday, extracts himself from his upper-middle-class life and turns to foraging in the same affluent suburb where he once lived with his family.
A college graduate takes a dishwasher's job on a whim, and becomes entangled in a criminal enterprise after agreeing to marry a beautiful immigrant for money.
A husband and wife's tense relationship is exacerbated when a stranger enters their home and claims to have grown up there.
An urbanite out on his morning run suspects that the city in which he's lived all his life has transmogrified into another city altogether.
These are among the wide-ranging creations in this stunning collection, resonant with the mystery, tension, and moral investigation that distinguish the fiction of E. L. Doctorow. Containing six unforgettable stories that have never appeared in book form, and a selection of previous Doctorow classics, All the Time in the World affords us another opportunity to savor the genius of this American master.
    Critic Reviews:
"Virtuoso Doctorow is revered for his grandly dimensional novels, but he is also a superlative and transfixing short story writer. The incandescent new stories and forever stunning vintage tales that Doctorow selected for this powerhouse collection portray psychological outliers on the edge of either liberation or an abyss. Doctorow is rightfully treasured for his social acuity and fluency in urban life, but he is also a penetrating observer of nature and our concealed primal selves. Like iron trellises wreathed with flowering vines, Doctorows complex and masterful tales of the strangeness, pain, and beauty of life are wise and resplendent. A landmark collection." (Booklist)

    Good Stories, Bad Narrator
I couldn't finish this audiobook because of the horrible narrator. He has a snarky, irritating voice that seemed to fit the first story--but as I continued, I realized this wasn't just a characterization of that narrator, it was going to be snarky the whole way through. On top of that, his vocal portrayl of female characters is awful. Guess I will finish this one in print.
An Alternate Reality & Fine Narration
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I've never read any books by EL Doctorow and this was a great introduction. I am now moving onto the next stories and will write more later.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Wakefield!!! I bought this book mainly for the first story "Wakefield" (which is now a movie) and was NOT disappointed! The narration was FINE. (unlike what the prior reviewer oddly wrote). The entire premise of the story was so absurd, but when you hear the writing, it becomes entirely believable. The story goes full circle and had me guessing to The End as to how it might end.

    Publisher's Summary:
Set amidst the outsider worlds of present-day downtown New York, 1990s Los Angeles, and 1940s Mexico City, Like Son is the not-so-simple story of a father, a son, and the love-blindness shared between them.
Meet Frank Cruz: a post-punk, sardonic, 30-year-old who unwittingly inherits his dead father's legacy. Born a bouncing baby girl named Francisca to parents tangled in a doomed love affair, Frank grows up in both the poorest barrios and poshest hills of Southern California. A defiant loner, Frank leaves home at the age of eighteen for the big city, but instead is sucked back into helping his estranged and blind father navigate an untimely death.
On his deathbed, Frank's father gives him a mysterious crumbling photograph of a woman with a stunning gaze: Nahui Olin, a fierce member of the early-20th-century Mexican avant-garde who once brought tragedy upon the Cruz family.
Punctured to his core by Nahui, Frank takes her portrait and flees to New York City to start anew - this time for real. There he meets eccentric, gorgeous, and sharp-tongued Nathalie. The two fall in love, but after seven years of happy-go-lucky life together, in September 2001 the New York skyline tumbles, and Frank finds himself smack in the middle of his predestined fate.

"With her blunt prose, Lemus doesn't waste a word in this smart, never sentimental identity novel." (Publishers Weekly)
"Lemus' powerfully written chronicle of love, in which gender is irrelevant, and the siren call of the past threatens the present, deserves more than a niche audience." (Booklist)

Not good. Nice attempt, but not good. The cover speaks for itself because it was my face when I finished thai book.
It had a nice roaring start, but then left one stranded and bored crawling to the end of an agonizing, pointless, wastrel of a story. Please save yourself and do not read this book.
    Great Book, Crappy Audible
This book is amazing and brilliant, which makes it all the more disappointing how crappy the Audible clip is. This person thinks in order to sound like a trans guy you just use a monotone? Major fail. Read the book if you can, or trade something cool with a friend who undoubtedly will read it out loud to you better than this catastrophe of a reading.
    Frighteningly Good Book!
I picked this book up on a recommendation and was taken aback by just how excellent it is. I would liken the writing to that of Michelle Tea's fictional work in the sense that it's very engaging - partially because you can't believe what's happening and partially because you want to know what will happen next. They tread on similar ground - queer/trans/ issues along with family stuff and relationships. A quick read because F.L.L. is such a compelling storyteller that you will find it difficult to put the book down. (Her first book is also quite good. It bodes well for her writing career that there was notable growth between the first and second book. It makes me incredibly excited for her third book!) Also, Akashic Books has not let me down yet.

Casts real problems in an unreal context
Let me get this out of the way first: Prolific non-fiction author and eminent Judaic scholar David Halperin???s debut novel Journal of a UFO Investigator (Viking, Blackstone Audio) is not properly science fiction. It is, however, a wonderful book, and Sean Runnette???s narration brings it wonderfully to life, and it is, to quote Bull Spec reviewer Richard Dansky, ???a novel about what science fiction is for and about???not aliens or rocketships, but rather the ability to cast real problems in an unreal context, and by doing so, get a handle on them???. The publisher's summary here is spot on -- particularly the Daniel Wallace blurb. I can???t really add much more than again quoting Dansky: ???Journal of a UFO Investigator is one of those rare reads that takes advantage of the wildest things science fiction can do in order to tell a human, mundane???and wonderful???story.??? Well, OK, I will try. Runnette???s narration does not have the benefit of the book???s layout and typesetting. We don???t have clues like indentation, italics, and so on to help denote ???this is a dream sequence??? or ???this is a journal entry??? and so in audio the lines between reality and fantasy blur even further. For me this was a wonderful effect, and I, again, can???t recommend this one enough.

    "Funny." (Washington Post)
    Members Reviews:
    Great Listen
This is a great listen, I don't normally listen to Zombie books, but this one is fantastic. Petersen has a great sense of humor and Campbell is a terrific narrator.
    Entertaining
This is a good book, but not a great book. It's easy to sit through and follow. The narrator isn't horrible. And if you are a fan of zombies, then this is an interesting story that sets the stage for the other two hopefully to finish off. I did research on the book and discovered its first in a trilogy, so don't expect to have all your questions answered right off the bat. It can get pretty cheesy at times, but you can tell it's on purpose and meant to lighten the mood. I found myself saying "Did she really just write that?!" a few times during some of the dialog or zombie executions. The couple is believable to an extent, but for the parts that aren't you just don't care because its just a fun little read. So, all my complaints that I could have about it considered, I just don't care. I enjoyed myself, and I think you will too. Just don't expect it to be the most profound writing ever. It's very lighthearted for most of it, to counterbalance some of the deep depressing sections that you have to have in order for there to be any drama in a zombie apocalypse. I recommend this because of it's entertainment value. It's not as depressing as some things (except a few pretty sad moments), but you still get your fill of zombie fun.
    Ear piercing screeches
They did realize this was supposed to be a professional reading right? Whoever edited this together needs to go back to school because every 3-10 sentences I get an horrible squeaking screech that sounds like some seriously bad feedback. I can't even focus on the honestly good story because I'm tensed up waiting for another attack to my ears.
    Entertaining short listen
Another pretty stereotypical zombie read. The difference and theme the author presents with this one is a couple having serious marital issues and how their personal conflicts come out during a zombie infection. I found a lot of the dialogue to be rather uninteresting. It was nice to see the characters resolve their issues and come together, but the common martial bickering got somewhat annoying. The zombie theme is definitely reaching it's all time high in popularity and several books have really shined. After reading Patient Zero and World War Z, it's very difficult for me to enjoy books in the genre with little to offer. The zombie portions of the story felt copied from so many already out there that I had a hard time enjoying it.
