    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-10-06
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 147 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Humor
    Publisher's Summary:
England between the wars was a paradise of utter calm and leisure for the very, very rich. But into this enclave is born Mrs. Emmeline Lucas - La Lucia, as she is known - a woman determined to lead a life quite different from the pomp and subdued nature of her class. With her cohort, Georgie Pillson, and her husband, Peppino, she upends the greats of high society, including the imperious Lady Ambermere and her equally imperious dog, Pug; the odious Piggy and Goosie Antrobus; the Christian Scientist Daisy Quantrock, with her penchant for the foreign; and everyone else in the small English town that the wealthy Britons call their country home. Beset on all sides by pretenders to her social throne, Lucia brings culture, the fine arts, and a great deal of excitement and intrigue into this cloistered realm.
    Critic Reviews:
"[A] delicious satire of the pretensions and foibles of provincial middle-class life in Britain in the 1920s and '30s...[with] droll send-ups of the bitter battles waged by matrons desperate to live out their fantastical versions of upper-class elegance and wit, and...shrewd readings of the ways in which our longings can make us both bizarre and sometimes appealing." (Kirkus Reviews)

    A delight
A little slow to get into but well worth it! Funny characters and situations, well narrated.
If you like the television show, Frasier, you'll love this book
The story is full of the absurdities of the self involved. The characters and situations will give you a chuckle.
    Wonderful characters and interactions
Would you consider the audio edition of Queen Lucia to be better than the print version?
Not this audio edition - it is read way too fast for me to truly enjoy and savor it.
What did you like best about this story?
The characters and their motivations seem authentic.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
    SLOW DOWN!!!!!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Jilted, replaced and reclaimed
    Any additional comments?
Beautifully written and intricate enough to hold my attention. I get so tired of mystery novels and prefer stories involving understanding of human relationships which can vary from culture to culture but still contain the common thread of humanity. "Make new friends and keep the old ones..." I like the book so much I will try another reader.
    Always irresistible.
Nadia May is superb, which suits Lucia just fine. The story as narrated by miss May is never tarsome
    Excellent reading
Which character as performed by Nadia May was your favorite?
Ms May does a delightful job with the male voices.
    Any additional comments?
Nadia May does a fine job at bringing this charming story to life.

Title: The Guermantes Way, Part 1
    Author: Marcel Proust
    Narrator: Neville Jason
    Format: Abridged
    Length: 4 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-26-00
    Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 31 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
In The Guermantes Way, Part 1, the third volume of Marcel Proust's monumental, seven volume Remembrance of Things Past, Marcel penetrates the inner sanctum of Paris high society and falls in love with the fascinating Duchesse de Guermantes. With his unmatched powers of observation Proust vividly describes the struggles for political, social, and sexual supremacy played out beneath a veneer of elegant manners.
    Editorial Reviews:
Acclaimed English actor Neville Jason does a beautiful job performing Proust's finely-honed depiction of life among Parisian aristocrats. In this abridged third volume of Proust's Remembrance of Things Past, the narrator returns to Paris and becomes fixated on the Duchesse de Guermantes, who lives next door. As he devises ways of meeting her, he also experiences a complex web of social and sexual relationships that include the rumblings of the Dreyfus affair. Listeners will appreciate Jason's smooth elocution and range of voices, although some may find his substitution of English accents for French at least a little blasphemous.

    missing the good parts
Since John Rowe hasn't gotten past the second volume of "Remembrance" (which makes me so very, very sad), I decided to give Neville Jason a try. But as I listened to this book, I kept thinking, "This is like Proust: The Screenplay." It's entertaining, and Neville is an excellent reader, but for me it was like Moby Dick with the whale descriptions cut out. (Yeah, I did love those whale descriptions. And the passages about spermaceti.) The society exploits of the unpleasant, self-serving Guermantes family members are not all that interesting to me: it's Prousts' musings and digressions that I find the most deep, lyrical, and satisfying, and they're missing here. I did listen to both parts of this book (and yes, Jason is truly terrific as the icky Charlus having a tantrum), but I will be trying again to finish the series in hard copy rather than continuing with the abridged version.
    Unabridge it, Please!
What did you like best about The Guermantes Way, Part 1? What did you like least?
What is read is fine, but an awful lot has been left out. Seems like those interested in Proust at all would be interested in all of Proust. Leave the abridging for those books which won't suffer from it.
If youve listened to books by Marcel Proust before, how does this one compare?
Delighted by the first two; this one less. In fact, the abridgement makes me think twice about getting the next volume, also abridged.
What about Neville Jasons performance did you like?
It was fine. Good range of voices; perhaps over Anglicizing some of them. It is, after all France, not England,we are hearing about....
Do you think The Guermantes Way, Part 1 needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
    Offer the whole book.
    His first Duchess
The Geurmantes Way is the third book of the seven-volume In Search of Lost Time / Rememberances. For audiobook purposes, it is divided into two parts, this being the first. As with this entire series, it is beautifully narrated by Neville Jason.
Warning: This book contains no car chases or helicopter explosions.
This particular section covers the return of the narrator to Paris, his obsession with making the acquaintance of his neighbor, the Duchesse de Guermantes, and his growing friendship with her nephew, Robert Saint-Loup, who is in turn obsessed with his mistress, Rachel.

Title: The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County and Other Stories
    Author: Mark Twain
    Narrator: Norman Dietz
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-27-00
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 11 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Humor
    Publisher's Summary:
Originally published in 1865, "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" began Mark Twain's remarkable career, and immediately demonstrated his masterful storytelling and brilliant sense of humor. This delightful tale introduces Jim Smiley, a man who loved to gamble, whether on horse races, dogfights, catfights, or even how long it took bugs to cross the Mexican border. When a gullible stranger came to town, Smiley boasted that his pet frog, Dan'l Webster, could outjump any frog in the county. Smiley, figuring it would be easy money, eagerly made a bet with the stranger, who had a secret plan to stop Dan'l in his tracks. This wickedly funny collection also includes several of Twain's other great short stories, including "A True Story", "Extracts from Adam's Diary", and "The Private History of a Campaign That Failed."
    Editorial Reviews:
Narrator Norman Dietz does not disappoint in this comical and oftentimes poignant collection of seven Mark Twain short stories. Hes as comfortable with delivering the rustic speech of Jim Smiley, the notorious bettor who gets hoodwinked in the title story, as he is with portraying an exasperated Adam as he copes with Eve in the Garden of Eden in "The Diaries of Adam and Eve." Theres a deadpan quality to Dietzs comedic delivery that adds to the humor. The smooth, deep tone of his voice is pleasing to the ear. His somewhat slow pace fits a collection written during a simpler, less hurried time.
    Critic Reviews:
"Wonderful fare for the recreational listener." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    Terrible sound quality
I guess I've been spoiled by the excellent quality of many Audible "format 4" recordings. This one, available only in format 2, sounds like a reel-to-reel tape made from an old radio broadcast. I generally like Norman Dietz as a reader of Mark Twain: I particularly enjoyed his reading of "The Man Who Corrupted Hadleyburg and Other Stories." But the sound quality here is so bad, I just couldn't finish it.

    Unique audiobook experience
My parents used to play Tom Bodett audiobooks on tape during long car rides. Now, 20 years later I'm revisiting these stories through adult ears, and I love them just as much.
Funny, touching, bittersweet. Tom Bodett tells these tales masterfully and introduces you to a place and community that you want to live in.
I'm making my way through the whole series again. If you never have, you'll thank yourself for taking the ride.
    Like friend's you haven't met
Tom Bodett's voice and pace are comforting and very pleasant to listen to. His tales of a Northern Alaskan town are wholesome and entertaining. A slice of life from the end of the road. This is not the typical audio book I tend to choose, but it was a great surprize, I have listened to all of Tom Bodett's books that I have been able to get ahold of and his 'End of the Road' books are the best to be certain.
His gentle calming voice will carry you through the tales and paint pictures so vivid you will almost start packing to move to the wilderness that is the setting for his stories.
Give it a try, I think you might like it.
    Outstanding !
Tom Bodett is a master storyteller. His character development is deep and thoughtful. While humor is the "bread and butter", he is at his very best when telling a poigiant tale. These often bring a tear to the eye. One feels especially close to his characters, all of whom ended up at "the End of the Road" in Alaska. His wonderful voice and the complementary piano music of Johnny B. make his End of the Road series of audiobooks classics. I can hardly imagine anyone not thoroughly enjoying Bodett's work!
    Truly Entertaining
The people Tom describe become old friends by the end of the book. His narrative style engrosses you to the point that you're there with them. In your minds eye you follow their every exploit and laugh and cry with them. It leaves you wanting more.
    Tom Bodett is simply brilliant
This man can write and tell a story with such a casual warmth that you end up feeling like you've just enjoyed a cup of tea with an old friend.

  • The Amateur Emigrant Audiobook by Robert Louis Stevenson

    Title: The Amateur Emigrant
    Author: Robert Louis Stevenson
    Narrator: Donal Donnelly

Length: 4 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-16-99
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 10 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
The great author Robert Louis Stevenson received a fateful telegram from his friend Fanny Osbourne in 1879, urging him to leave Edinburgh and join her in San Francisco. The penniless young writer packed his bags and boarded a ship for a long, difficult voyage across the Atlantic, taking detailed notes of the appalling conditions and struggles of his fellow emigrants. When Stevenson arrived in the United States, he immediately boarded a railroad to California, observing the vast country during his transcontinental journey. A marvelously well-written travelogue, The Amateur Emigrant is one of the best accounts of the increasingly popular 19th-century adventure of Europeans sailing to the New World and discovering America.
    (P) by Recorded Books, Inc.
    Editorial Reviews:
Famed Scottish adventure writer Robert Louis Stevenson is given great treatment by Donal Donnelly, whose light Irish brogue carries the listener over the waves and hordes that populate The Amateur Emigrant, Stevensons account of his 1879-1880 journey from Glasgow to California to meet his future wife. Stevenson, a son of privilege, uses his travel as an opportunity to study how the lower classes fared on a long trip across the ocean and beyond.
Written during an epoch of mass migration - especially from Europe to America - Stevensons is a firsthand account by a fine writer of the difficulties suffered by those less fortunate than himself. This memoir belongs to the same category as other social and adventure odysseys like Democracy in America and Life on the Mississippi.
    Critic Reviews:
"It is the best book he ever wrote - a marvelous piece of writing, lakelike in its lucidity and depth, a genuine original." (Jonathan Raban, author of Old Glory)
    Members Reviews:
    What a rip-off
This might be a good book - but the quality of the recording makes it very difficult to tell. It sounds as if was recorded by Thomas Edison on to a very early wax cylinder, lost in a dusty cupboard for over 100 years, then rediscovered and transferred from an audio file to digital using two tin cans linked by tight string. Why Audible thinks this is suitable quality for commercial resale is anybody's guess. Certainly I'm not sticking around long enough to find out - I'm out of here as soon as I can get free of my subscription.

Title: Hold It Til It Hurts

    Language: English
    Release date: 08-13-13
    Publisher: Recorded Books

    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
When Achilles Conroy and his brother Troy return from a tour of duty in Afghanistan, their white mother presents them with the key to their past: envelopes containing details about their respective birth parents. After Troy disappears, Achilles - always his brothers keeper - embarks on a harrowing journey in search of Troy, an experience that will change him forever. Heartbreaking, intimate, and at times disturbing, Hold It Til It Hurts is a modern-day odyssey through war, adventure, disaster, and love, and explores how people who do not define themselves by race make sense of a world that does.
    Critic Reviews:
"Hold It 'Til It Hurts is the kind of impressive debut that marks its author, T. Geronimo Johnson, as a writer with a career that bears watching." (Stuart Dybek)
"The magnificence of Hold It 'Til It Hurts is not only in the prose and the story but also in the book's great big beating heart. These complex and compelling characters and the wizardry of Johnson's storytelling will dazzle and move you from first page to last. Novels don't teach us how to live but Hold It 'Til It Hurts will make you hush and wonder." (Anthony Swofford, author of Jarhead)
"This rich and sophisticated first novel brings together pleasures rarely found in one book: Hold It 'Til It Hurts is a novel about war that goes in search of passionate love, a dreamy thriller, a sprawling mystery, a classical quest for a lost brother in which the shadowy quarry is clearly the seekers own self, and a meditation on family and racial identity that makes its forerunners in American fiction look innocent by comparison." (Jaimy Gordon, National Book Award winner for Lord of Misrule)
    Members Reviews:
This book is better than me.
Raw and honest, the author weaves a tale that left me feeling rough. No placating stories of family, race, or relationships. I am agitated into a deeper awareness of self, not individuality but humanity. A great book, a great story and a wonderful reading.
