Short and to the point

This was a fairly quick listen, and for those new to the lead character (like me), it didn't take long to suss out his nature and the situation he was in.

This reads more like an old noir story, with the dame falling for the bad guy instead of the private eye.

There isn't much else to say without spoiling things, but I enjoyed the main character, the female interest and even a couple of the bit players. Not knowing the world this story is written in, I can't get too much of a grasp on some of the others, but I'd be interested in hearing more.

A Good Introduction To The Soak

The Lucky Dime was a good noir prequil to The Soak. It was very well done but I want to hear more. This story I think is giving the listener a little back story about Hobbs. It was almost like an introduction. I'm curious as to where the author Patrick E. McLean goes with the novel.

I liked that he narrated his own book. He did an excellent job. He has a nice voice with good voice inflections. I can see why he read his own book. Hopefully The Soak will be available soon.

I enjoyed that the author Patrick E McLea narrated his own work. His voice made the story flow in my head nicely. I hope The next book Soak is as good and McLea narrated that one as well.

Great character background and wonderful narration by the author make this a fun and fast listen. Set in the world that I want to know more about. A winding web of suspense..

Character development in this novel is simply astounding. But don't for a minute imagine you can think ahead and guess the plot. It twists and turns like a flag flapping in the wind. You'll never see the next thing coming. Suddenly, it's just there. .. A Great into to what seems like an outstanding series.. Can't wait for the next one..

Guilty pleasure

If you've read Stoker's Dracula you will recognize what can only be described as shameless stealing of whole sections of Bram's story. Just substitute Watson for Jonathan Harper at the castle. A monk for several other characters. Holmes, of course, is Van Helsing. If this is an homage it is well done. I have to admit I enjoyed recognizing each blatant robbery. The narrator seemed hesitant at first but was much better as the story progressed.

hard going

very well narrated, compelling, but unremittingly miserable. Avoid if you are given to bouts of depression!!!

A very good and gripping story

My initial attraction to this book was because of its setting (I have intimate knowledge of Herne Bay) and I was very curious to find out how well a thriller would work in what I think of as a pleasant but fairly boring seaside town. I have to say I was very impressed by the way the author captured the atmosphere of the place and gave it a very believable sinister edge. OK - some liberties were taken with some of the minor facts about the geography but there was perfect logic in setting this story in a location like Herne Bay where nobody expects really dreadful things to happen. The underlying themes of war, PTSD, child abuse and false memories were intelligently explored and I was genuinely gripped throughout the tale. The structure of the story (including an interrogation of the main character by a psychologist) kept me intrigued and this was one of the few books of this type where I felt there was a plausible plot.

The narrators were very good and added character to the voices of the two female protagonists. My only quibble (and not enough for this to lose a star) is that the reading was quite slow and this was remedied by me changing the setting to 1.25. I recommend this highly and will look out for more books by this author.

Is better in x1.5 speed

I nearly gave up on the book as I found the narration very melodramatic and needlessly slow with too many dramatic pauses. It actually ruined the main character for me.

But then I decided to to play with the speed of the book reading (wanting to power through it faster) and found that playing it x1.5 cut out most of the melodrama and you got to enjoy the story.

I never write reviews but this book is fantastic, twisty turns and keeps you guessing right to the end, I mogen Church is one of the best narrators going and the other narrator is close on her heels. Amazing !!!

too many notes

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Because this book has so many characters and so many "themes" it seemed to me to be disjointed and difficult to follow. Additionally, there were so many characters that none of them was developed into a character this reader/listener cared about.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

More character development. Fewer superficial twists of narrative.

Did Lesley Mackie do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Because there were so many characters, differentiating by the reader was probably not possible. Mackie is an excellent reader but in this reading there were so many sudden changes of direction as well as changes of characters that Mackie failed to differentiate between stories so this listener was constantly having to reverse to catch up with a new character in a new narrative.

Could you see Evil for Evil being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Movies generally need to be more simplistic than books and this book was anything but simplistic.

Have the reader and recording separate not just chapters but also switches in narratives and characters.

Cinderella Mystery

What did you love best about Closer Than She Thinks?

This is set in the deep south and shows the values of the elite. The story starts out about wearable art then a long mystery slowly is uncovered.

What other book might you compare Closer Than She Thinks to and why?

As a 20 yr fan of the author, the audio version has prompted me to purchase this book. Author is a good romance mystery writer. Some books better than others. The Hideaway is not to be missed and hopefully soon on Audible. Tempting Fate is a great book don't miss it, even though the reader is not a fave of mine.

Must use the new 1.25x speed to get author's intent.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

This author doesn't have the feel good humor of Rachel Gibson so Ms Bean had to work with humor that was quaint but not hilarious, even our hero mentions this in a scene.

Do not miss Tami Hoags Still Waters mystery romance read by Ms Bean. It will knock your socks off. (I am making this reads comparison to Still Waters, which maybe unfair) Ms Bean does such justice to Sandra Browns Witness another don't miss read.

I noticed that author or distributor has opted for a different reader for each book. Smart as each reader has a different style and author has a different rhythm in each of her stories.

I hope they pair Ms Angela Dawe for The Hideaway. Karen White, Christina Traister could also do a great job. For whatever reason, the selected group of readers for author's new audio releases of previously published books are not on my top 5 list, so use a Gold credit if you can.

Terry Wale is an awful narrator

If, like me, you enjoy reading Cynthia Harrod-Eagles' work, give this audio book (and any others read by Terry Wales) a wide berth. His voice sounds like an unpleasant old-time villain; I can practically see him stroking his long mustache. In the right acting role, he is probably great, but not here. Couldn't get past minute 47.

"Hard Going", the most recent of Cynthia Harrod-Eagle's books featuring Bill Slider. Kindle version

I had been waiting with great impatience for this book to become available, and it was worth the wait.

As usual with her books, Harrod-Eagles uses beautiful prose, and the plot follows a clear path to the denouement.

Although Slider and his fellow detectives are always trying to solve a murder, the author does not wallow in the gore, and she is too good a writer to depend on horror and shock tactics.

I also enjoy the clever puns and sly allusions.

The anxiety her readers endured while waiting to see if Bill and Joanna would find a way out of their financial and accommodation difficulties was finally laid to rest, but not until the last couple of pages, which kept the reader in suspense.

I would certainly recommend this book to friends and family, though I think they should read the earlier books in the series first.

Good

Not great. Not enough Joanna and baby George in this one. Slider's interaction with his little son is one of my favorite things. For some reason this one seemed slower going than most of the previous, but since I found the victim and the people who cared about him so appealing I wanted to know who/why they ended his life.

Not her best effort

I love the characters in this series, but I found this particular book to be indeed "Hard Going". Also the puns and silliness that I enjoy so much, such as the fish dish Atherton makes called "Raison Sole D'etre", seemed contrived and -- dare I say it? -- even irritating this time around. Usually I laugh out loud at least once, but this book was lacking clever repartee. It was also sadly lacking Harrod-Eagles' deft hand with plot. Think I'll go back and re-read some of the earlier books to remind myself why I like this series.

Most likable character

Bill Slider is one of the most likable characters in the recurring police mysteries of today. Usually I tear through the latest effort by his creator. Having lived near, roamed often and still love London, I really enjoy the places he goes. He's smart, funny, empathetic and determined. Love his relationship with his "firm" of police; his wife; his father. All that remains in this book; so, why only 3 stars or 3.5, if allowed? It just wasn't up to the high standard set by the previous stories. Seemed just too....I don't like using this word because what book isn't?.....contrived. Still in the end, the bad folks were caught and the good will inherit! Better than 3 but not a 4. 3.5, say I.

Jeremy Arthur's smooth and distinctive voice enhances The Fourth Rule to a sublime and enthralling listen. His ability to voice accented and still accurate dialogue by the many characters is truly delightful. I found myself smiling at his versatility and solid cadence many times during this 4th book. He takes great care in matching his choices to the written description and with the addition of foreign accents, adds immeasurably to this wonderful story. The description of the cat, Tank, and his antics are truly one of my favorite parts of the book. WONDERFUL work, sir!

Enjoyable & involving!

Great detective series if you have a rather Zen turn of mind! Jeremy Arthur is the perfect reader! Bring on the next one!
