This book brings up many points you may not have considered about the four. Shinning a light on them that is more scrutinising than most media that just idealises them.

Good if youve never heard of Scott Galloway

I am a fan of Scott Galloway, and watch his YouTube channel religiously, which when reading this, was a blessing and a curse. Much of what I have heard here I have seen previously in his YouTube videos. Thats not to say its not good stuff, but not as enlightened as I had hoped.

I also would have preferred it if he were reading the book as I think a lot of his dry comments and colloquial nature was lost with such a polished and enthusiastic sounding guy.

Kudos to Scott though - was eye opening to hear just how much he has done in his career and the advice given was excellent.

Only improvement would be Scott reading it. All the same, highly recommended. Thanks for writing it Scott.

Interesting presentation

Interesting book, amusing presentation. Galloway, is a NYU professor, so misses few opportunities to virtue signal and proselytize his Marxian visions of utopia. What he lacks in understanding of economics, he makes up for in insights on their business. Still, an entertaining listen.

Very insightful set of opinions on "the 4". Made valid, good points and correlations on things we are exposed to everyday, but don't really notice. I will DEFINITELY recommend this book to friends, students and contacts. The narrator was good, although I really expected and was looking forward to hear Professor Galloway in the narration. Probably the best book I have read this year. Kudos to professor Galloway! May there be more!

So this is a great, thoughtful book that gives a lot to the ...

E-commerce is still an emerging and changing activity, even though it feels to have been present âfor everâ â and for many it has! Some countries are ahead of others with this activity, yet even those who are catching-up are finding new and often different opportunities that may be something for the established markets and their participants to consider.

So this is a great, thoughtful book that gives a lot to the reader, since very few â if any â can really keep track of everything that is happening in this rapidly-developing super-activity. Focussing on the developing markets â those following on from the earlier adopters of e-commerce â it is especially interesting to discover how they are copying both winning formulas created with the blood, sweat, tears and lost money of investors, as well as making their own developments too, often in response to challenging and demanding local situations. Take an educational trip through Africa, Asia and Latin America with the author, getting some of the latest intelligence and consider what impact it may have on western brands. If you thought there was a big impact on western markets with e-commerce, this may pale into insignificance when the rest-of-the-world gets addicted to it!

You do not have to have âskin in the gameâ to enjoy this book. Even a curious shopper could get a lot of enjoyment out of its easy-to-read, accessible and ultra-informative text. It can serve many audiences well.

Excellent history!

I recommend this. I am 73, so I have lived through many economic and social changes associated with our capitalist democracy. But my knowledge of the older economic history of our country is woefully lacking and I learned a lot from this book. I also missed some of the links, such as how Steve Jobs history at Pixar affected his later success at Apple. I think much more of this should be included in history classes!

Now for the downside. I had a terrible time getting through the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the book because of the narration. The narrator was easy to understand, but his presentation was like that of a teacher talking down to the class that he considers really stupid. I got interested in this book because of an interview given by the author. I wish he had narrated it himself! But by the end I was so caught up in the story that I wasnt really conscious of the narration.

Inspired Story-Telling of US History

This "history" book is inspirational and riveting. Clearly the immigrant/entrepreneur author loves America. He describes its history through the eyes of the entrepreneurial spirit that propelled its growth to the position it now holds globally. The book is logically and chronologically organized by chapter and industry, and weaves in the major players of each period with a story-telling expertise that made it hard for me to "put down". I would love to see it introduced to school curriculums where few students know much about history, with the intention of igniting an excitement for and love of the study of history, which many feel is very dry.

Both a Bridge and a Battle Cry

Every few years there is a book that is so powerful it turns me into a book nerd evangelical. I go out and buy several copies and press them into friends hands with the fervor of a recent convert and tell them they "NEED" to read it. I think the last nonfiction book to do this for me was 'Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right' or maybe 'The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine'. Usually, the book has both a financial and a policy tint. It also usually also explores unfairness. That makes sense. In my previous life I was a policy analyst and I now work in the finance industry as a financial planner. I'm usually a pretty mellow guy. I meditate, read, drink tea, and chill. But reading about inequality and unfairness tends, for me, to be a big catalyst for action.

If the last few years has taught us anything is America is still struggling with its "original sin" of slavery and the ugly descendants of slavery: discrimination, segregation, inequality, despair. We have seen, just this week (actually for the last few years), protests about the way Black Americans are treated by police officers. That subject deserves its own space, so I wont dwell too much on that here, other than to say the interaction of Black Americans and police officers ISN'T simple. It isn't a subject that cannot easily be explained just by saying police are racists, or unarmed Black Americans should behave differently (different from whom?).

Good Topic. Could be put together better

This is an interesting read about how some countries in Asia had excelled and have developed while others are still stuck on trying to become as prosperous as the others. This book helps explain all the business mumbo-jumbo that we hear in the news without being too condescending. The major issue I have with this book is that it is not put together very well.

Fun read for random Asia knowledge

It was a fun read and had tons of information in it. He writes around a central thesis that land reform, export-oriented industrialization, and finance for both those things are the three keys to the development in Asia. He refutes some more common beliefs about development, for example that free markets and free trade are best for developing economies. This made the read super organized and convincing. The book is not organized geographically or chronologically and does not go into huge detail for any particular country. However, this is appropriate and it teaches a lot in less than 300 pages.

In an increasingly global world a very important and relevant read.

Studwell's book "How Asia Works" is a very well written, highly readable, and insightful look into how arguable the most watched continent does its business. In the markets today it seems you cant go very long without hearing about china, how its growing or collapsing, or increasingly slowing, but that data can be interpreted incorrectly, if you don't understand how different their culture of business in some ways certainty is than that of the US and Europe. In this book Studwell goes over not just how Asia as we know it today began but also how its changing, and most imporantly how the buiness it's cyce wokrs differnetly there certainly a worthwhile read

Great business book

The strategies and key points are powerful and important for any business. I plan to use many of them in my current and future endeavors. The story itself gets a little too repetitive in some areas and loses focus near the end. Otherwise a great book and highly recommend.

Does the job admirably

This book shows us finance and risk-reward thinking as a world-view, mixed seamlessly into the regular events of our lives (and some of our favorite popular stories). It is about making smart and principled decisions in one's life, at any stage (though plenty is geared here to college students, but it is no hindrance, because the underlying principles are universal). This thinking already predominates in my mind, but it is great to walk through it with a professor who richly "gets it." There are all sorts of regular person calculations that will gain a new clarity and extra dimension to those who haven't crossed this bridge before. I was afraid, being a person who basically hasn't watched television or consumed contemporary music for 20 years, sees less than one current-run movie per year, and avoids most pop culture like the plague, I would stumble on the pop culture references, especially recent ones. I needn't have worried -- the author-narrator explains everything well.

okay nothing to call an Uber about

The book was okay. But it came out right before the CEO was fired so we missed that whole story. And the performance was by the author which was a little shaky.

Great insight in Uber's founder psyche.

This story illustrates that you can start and grow a billion dollar corporation and still have very little empathy for your employees or your clients.

Seemed to be a pretty good history of Uber

... although the author seems to be more interested in what social media says about the company than what the company is as a business. Just because of bunch of people whine on Twitter and Snapchat doesn't mean their points are legitimate or that the majority agree. Personally I love Uber as a concept, I use it more and more every month (sometimes between offices so I can make multiple safe phone calls), and more than anything I think it is amazing and wonderful and that the service has helped reduce drunk driving so much.

Get Inside Travis Kalanick,s Head

This is a great book. You get the Uber history and also really good insight into how Uber and Travis Kalanick think and operate. It's also just fun to read.

Top level reporting without depth.

Chronological approach without tension. just seemed to rehash many of the news themes that have become the Uber story. Never felt engaged in the story and just felt driven to the conclusion. Wished we could learn more about some of the other key players.
