Not for a scientific reader

If you have, somewhat, scientific background, in economics, social sciences or even biology and physical sciences, this book is not for you. The underlying concepts are quite simple, and the book is intended for an audience who totally lacks any background on the subject. Beware. I think it makes a point. However, the narrative of scaling across complex systems is intermeshed, although they have different underlying reasons. This is the part I liked least about it. Observational equivalence has not much to do with causational equivalence. Complexity is a very important subject and I am not sure this book gives to the subject the treatment it deserves.

Fascinating and clear enough for a lib arts major

This is an amazing book with a broad perspective on the statistical foundations of how things are born, grow, and die.

You clearly left the SEC better than you found it

The fallout from financial crime extends far beyond the direct victims. The massive frauds perpetrated by the likes of Madoff and Stanford have compromised the faith investors have in the financial system. Where was the SEC during this time and why were they asleep at the wheel?

Norm Champ clearly illustrates how our system failed and provides very common sense solutions which seem obvious to an outsider. While the stories relate primarily to just one department of the government, the SEC, I'm sure that these shortcomings are present in all government branches.

Norm, thanks for writing the book, but thank you more for your public service. You clearly left the SEC better than you found it!

Good Read

Going Publlc is an interesting, entertaining, and informative read. Norman Champ takes the dry and complicated subject of the SEC and make makes it understandable and readable. Going public is a must read for anyone who worries about the US Financial Markets.

Interesting account of the author's experience

This is a well-written account of the author's experience while at the SEC. I have heard similar stories about the inner workings of the SEC, so I find Champ's stories more believable. In some spots though I found myself wondering how he could remember such great detail like how they exactly entered a building and the security that day, etc. Maybe the author simply has a great memory.

There a great deal of information and history of how this mess of a health care system came to be. There are suggestions on how the evolution of a better system can be made. No one villain no quick fix everyone needs to be involved.

Outstanding summary of our current healthcare situation

A must read for every American to better understand the issues stakeholders and patients face, how we got to this current situation, and why politicians are in a standoff over a solution that will work to keep cost down while providing high quality patient care. Well Researched, Outlined, and Presented

This book captivated and held my interest from beginning to end. It was filled with relevant examples and anecdotes to help the reader understand the issues being addressed. Each chapter is well laid out and the order is very logical in its presentation. I love that the author constantly referred back to previous rules and guidelines throughout the entire book to help remind the reader of previously stated topics.

Rosenthal does not blame doctors or political sides in this book but rather points out all problems with our healthcare system. The portion where she describes what actions can be made to help improve our current heath care system are actually feasible.

More of a business business book.

The first part of the book discussed a few intersting bits on building a good app and then the rest of it was about the business side of running a company, and mostly about raising funds. A few well known apps were used as examples and discussed mostley thier figures, valuations and buyouts. I enjoyed some of analysis tools and metrics for measuring the profitability and effectiveness of an app, but otherwise found the 2nd half of the book a bit dry. This is definitely a book more suited for entrepreneurs than developers.

A Modern Day Example of "The Innovators Dilemma"

Airbnb is the culmination of what can happen when three people work together and refuse to quit. Everything seemed to be stacked against the founders, yet they kept working through each and every problem as they surfaced. This is an excellent book to read if you are interested in a modern day company that disrupts an established industry. Overall, the narrative was well structured and the narrator did a good job.

My only problem with the book is that I now what to quit my day job and risk everything on my own startup. The guys who made Airbnb were not geniuses. In fact, they were really normal dudes. If those guys can make a multi-billion dollar company, then why can't I??? Ugh... Well, at least I have a comfy work cubicle to call my own. That's something... Right? Right???

Irritating voice

The content was okay. My real issue is with the voice performance. It needs to be redone ASAP. The voice pitch, cadence, and modulation are irritating.

Great book. Bad narrator

This was a great book....really good, but I think the lady that narrated it is new. Because the first half of the book was painful listening to her. But she broke out of her trying to sound good and then just started reading it.....I know you're supposed to rate the book. But who reads it and how is just as important for an audio book.

Pretty good

The story isn't as in depth as the 20-30 hour biographies I normally read, but it is the most comprehensive story about Airbnb available.

Performance was a little too theatrical for a documentary book but that's just personal preference. Doesn't negatively affect the experience anyways.

Inspiring story but narrated like a childrens story

Fascinating but hands down the worse narration I have ever heard. It was read like a childrens book and I struggled through every word. Terrible decision to pair the narrator with this book.

Very disappointing. Not what it promises to be.

Would you try another book from Steven Kotler and Jamie Wheal and/or Fred Sanders?

No. After purchasing Stealing Fire, I feel like I got "burned."

The book promises to be, "a guidebook for anyone who wants to radically upgrade their life." Unfortunately, it's just a guidebook to entice you into joining their training which costs $700 annually.

Has Stealing Fire turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. Just the author and his team of people who clearly wrote this book as nothing more than a means to sell their $700 "training."

Have you listened to any of Fred Sanderss other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. It's on par with his other work.

What did you take away from Stealing Fire that you can apply to your work?

I learned that an entire "guidebook" can be written without giving any truly actionable guidance other than, "you should pay me $700 to get the REAL advice you were seeking when you bought my audiobook."

I also learned that an entire audiobook lasting 8 hours, 24 minutes can be nothing more than marketing. If I wanted to be an asshole, maybe I'd apply these lessons to my own endeavors but my ethics won't let me.

Wake up Call

Honest picture from all participants perspectives. Portrays China as the problem. Face it historically china has been the dominant power in the region. Kissinger and Nixon's opening of China in the 70s started the ball rolling downhill. Good backgrounder on the Pacific situation. Anyone with a dog in the fight (Americans) should read this if only to understand why people there behave the way they do. Well written easy to understand.

Interesting but naive conclusions

The author could not have foreseen how Donald Trump would undermine pretty much everyone one of the proposals for a strong U.S. role in Asia. That said, I cringed a bit when the author sees the U.S. political mode as the world's role model which is laughable today. Had the author brought in more diverse points of view in the conclusion rather than such a Washington centric point of view the book would have far more compelling.

Awful narration

The book is fine, if not especially ground-breaking. The narration is terrible. Annoying voice, bad pronunciation of non-English words and clueless intonation and emphasis. As for the cod-Chinese and Indian accents for quotes...not a good idea...
