Sprache: Deutsch

Profound!

Almost everyone knows the story of William Tell, but this is the first time I've read Schiller's original. I found it inspirational.

In a relativistic age, it is good to be reminded of the virtues and moral standards that have been a foundation for whatever is good in Western culture. Yes, one could object that the good characters are idealised and one-dimensional compared to the flawed, imperfect individuals of the real world, but at least we could aspire to be like the ideals.

At another level, Wilhelm Tell gives food for thought about political structure, freedom and self-government.

Recommended!

A classic read in German

Language may be 'veraltet' but it is a good reading exercise for a non native German speaker.

As we begin this New Year what better way than to read Christopher Villierâs book âPetals of ...

A few years ago I began to see posts on Christopher Villiersâ Facebook page. The way he deeply and thoughtfully describes characters and stories from the Bible inspired me to read more of his work. I anxiously await each Facebook post!

So it didnât take me long to get my hands on a copy of his book âPetals of Vision.â It is full of poems about life. As we begin this New Year what better way than to read Christopher Villierâs book âPetals of Vision.â The very first poem âNew Yearâ âââI shed the old year, Letting its skin slip from me. A pale freshness shines, possibilities glowing, a lit path to somewhere new.â I wish many glowing possibilities to Christopher who has lit a path to somewhere new for me with his book âPetals of Vision.â

Title: Odd Odes for Oldies

Author: Helen Ings

Format: Unabridged

Length: 23 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-28-17

Publisher: XlibrisUK

Genres: Drama & Poetry, Poetry

Publisher's Summary:

This little book of nonsense poems very much reflects on the writer's own experience of life in the not-so-fast lane!

Most of the short poems were written in the hope that some of the situations described therein might spark a note of recognition and maybe raise a smile or two among other recycled teenagers!

Title: A Vigil for Justice. A Vigil for Peace.

Format: Unabridged

Length: 24 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-21-17

Publisher: Recast Music Education

Genres: Drama & Poetry, Poetry

Publisher's Summary:

These poems are mostly drawn from the album A Vigil For Justice. A Vigil For Peace. and the EP Epiphany. I have written lyrics and poems for many years and have concentrated on them from the viewpoint of always being approached via music. So I thought it would be a change to work this way round - words first and in charge of the music myself, if any.

Title: Bantam

Author: Jackie Kay

Narrator: Jackie Kay

Format: Unabridged

Length: 1 hr and 21 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-16-17

Publisher: Picador

Genres: Drama & Poetry, Poetry

Publisher's Summary:

Jackie Kay's first collection as Scottish Makar is an audiobook about the fighting spirit - one, the poet argues, that we need now more than ever. Bantam brings three generations into sharp focus - Kay's own, her father's, and his own father's - to show us how the body holds its own story. Kay shows how old injuries can emerge years later; how we bear and absorb the loss of friends; how we celebrate and welcome new life; and how we embody our times, whether we want to or not.

Bantam crosses borders, from Rannoch Moor to the Somme, from Brexit to Bronte country. Who are we? Who might we want to be? These are poems that sing of what connects us and lament what divides us; poems that send daylight into the dark that threatens to overwhelm us - and could not be more necessary to the times in which we live.
