Try Reading some Poetry!
I don't typically pick up poetry books, but, as with the first "Feign," I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed TL Curtis' "Feign II - The Downfall." The poems are interesting and a few are quite resonant. I even found myself talking aloud while reading! For instance, "I Hate Myself," hit close to home, and I re-read the line, "I just need to touch 'pause' on this second-after-second battle," several times out loud with a sympathetic shake of my head.
My favorite poem was "Made Self," because it spoke so eloquently about how I feel right now about where I am in my own life. The line, "I'd like to be alive when I die," is exactly how I'm living my life right now, and it's been a hard-fought for and conscious decision to do just that.
My least favorite poem had to be Adoricidal, because I can't imagine killing an innocent animal, though I suppose I can understand the sentiment of being inundated with too many cute animal videos!
If you're at all into poetry, this would be a great read for you. Even if you're not into poetry, you might find yourself relating to the poems more than you thought you would; I know I did!
Although I have no idea what Curtis' voice sounds like in real life
T.L. Curtis' Feign II reminds me of coffee shops and beatnik hangouts. Although I have no idea what Curtis' voice sounds like in real life, upon reading her poetry, I can clearly hear her voice emerge in a spoken-word style through her invariably engaging lines. Each poem is different from the next, however incredibly linked. While reading each entry, one can clearly recognize they are written by the same poet featuring her true-life experiences. My absolute favorite line in the entire book is "I'd like to be alive when I die". It brings up an extreme amount of emotion in me and I can relate to it whole-heartedly. The complete poems of "One Talented Tommy" and "So Wrong" are engaging to me because they are relationship stories. They left me feeling like I knew what Curtis was experiencing in her life when she wrote them. The only poem that bothered me was "Dancing is Forbidden" because I felt as though Curtis forced the rhyme. I feel as though it would have been more powerful without the forced rhyme. Many of the poems sounded like lyrics to a song, and left me wanting to hear the beat in which she wrote! If you are looking for limericks or happy rhyming poetry, you will not find it here! With Curtis' powerful voice, I would recommend this book of poetry to people who would like a smooth introduction to the world of poetry! Her poems are fairly easy to read, and invoke many emotions!
