    Title: Aeneid
    Subtitle: Book VI
    Author: Seamus Heaney
    Narrator: Ian McKellen
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 15 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-06-16
    Publisher: Faber & Faber
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Drama & Poetry, Poetry
    Publisher's Summary:
The sixth book of Virgil's Aeneid, in which Aeneas travels into the underworld to meet the spirit of his father, is a story that captivated Seamus Heaney from his schooldays. But the work took on a special significance for him after the death of his own father, becoming a touchstone to which he would return as an adult.
His noble and moving translation of book VI bears the fruit of a lifetime's concentration upon it: he began translating passages in the 1980s and was finalising the work right up to the summer of his death. It was, he said, 'a constant presence', infusing and inspiring his original verse, culminating in its impact with his final collection, Human Chain.
It seems almost miraculous to be able to publish a new work by Seamus Heaney after his passing, as if even now he were capable of offering his listeners a gift. That the gift should be book VI of the Aeneid only adds to the poignancy of a work that marks the end of Seamus Heaney's poetic journey.
    Critic Reviews:
"Heaney's occasional use of alliterative emphasis, familiar from his 'Beowulf', serves only to make it the more moving, the more his own. So here are those great stories anew for us: the entry into the underworld; the meetings with the lost helmsman Palinurus and the mutilated son of Priam, Deiphobus; Dido's snubbing of Aeneas - and Aeneas's attempt to embrace his father again: 'Three times he tried to reach arms round that neck / Three times the form, reached for in vain, escaped / Like a breeze between his hands, a dream on wings.' If, somehow, you have never read Virgil, start here, start now." (David Sexton, London Evening Standard)
"Every page is a testament to the poet Heaney was.... It is moving - in a painfully obvious way - to picture Heaney translating this, thinking about Virgil's words before his own death. It is a book about the impossibility of which we all dream - a reunion with people loved and lost.... But he never loses himself. We are reminded (as Father Michael McGlinchey would have agreed) that Seamus Heaney's place is at the top of the class." (Kate Kellaway, Observer )
"Heaneys Virgil is, in fact, as elegant and polished as we might expect from this consummate craftsman." (Jeremy Noel-Todd in the Sunday Times)
"He renders it with tact and humility, less concerned with spectacular local effects than with an accumulating gravity, though the torments of the damned can be clearly heard: 'the savage / Application of the lash, the fling and scringe and drag / Of iron chains.'" (The Independent)
"And, of course, he was a great translator from many sources. Fittingly, his posthumous book from the Aeneid may come to be recognised as his finest translation of all, as well as the one most personal to him. It has been produced very cherishingly by the poets daughter and publisher, with a beautiful gold-leaf-seeming 'Golden Bough' on its grey cover. It is Heaneys passport to the literary future. Not that he needed one." (Bernard O'Donoghue in the Irish Times)

Wonderful to have the story in Seamus Heaney's masterful version. Anything he touches is made more accessible and more beautiful.
The most touching part of the famous story comes alive and feels absolutely timely and timeless.

    Genres: Drama & Poetry, Poetry
    Publisher's Summary:
A collection of dark poems and dark dreams. A wild ride through the mind of an angry young man who both loved and hated the world. A bitter struggle to reconcile with the horrors of life, the idea of religion, and the violence inherent in the world.
The first part of the collection - Beast and Beauty - contains 10 poems representing what is both ugly and beautiful in the world. "Birth of a Serial Killer", "Baby Doll Dead", "Dead Man", "The Beautiful Bloody Kiss", "In the Dark", "I Feel Within", "Cry to Heaven", "Dark Paths", "Confessions of an Android", and "Fairy Tale Destruction."
The second part of the collection - Love and Hate - contains 10 poems representing pieces written from extreme feelings of love and hate. Some are beautiful. Some are wretched. "Photographs of You", "In Winter", "One Wish", "The Virgin Bleeds", "Pound of Flesh", "The Speed of Ghosts", "Dead Children", "Eat Your Family", "The Unholy Rape", and "Resurrecting Monsters".
Fairy Tale Destruction is a dark and bloody mess of metered rhymes and verses that delves deep into the mind and heart of a tortured artist's fractured psyche.

Truely Dark. Can you handle that?
Take heed when the description says "dark poetry."
These poems are very dark and full of despair and pain and blood and rain. I like the rhythm to most of these poems and I like the honesty of the writer that pours out. But this book was far too dark for me. Reading this book on a bad day will make you want to destroy everything and in ever possible way. Reading this book on a good day makes it hard to sympathize or empathize with the author.
I received this book in the Member's Giveaway so I am not sure if it is complete or still being edited. So I didn't take too much away from the book for the formatting. The spacing was off and whole poems wasted white space because they were spread across a few pages.
All in all, I gave this book 3 stars because the poems did have rhythm and convey strong emotions and therefore gets a strong response.
    Not for the faint hearted
This book of poems knocked me flat. Wow! Not for the faint hearted. This book gets you thinking. About life in general and more specific, about how people cope. One of my favourite parts in the book is:
"So if you're alone at night and you feel afraid,
you best take care or you'll end up in a grave.
I'll suck your bones where the meat is fresh.
You're just another victim for a pound of flesh."
The book is enough to scare you, or to make you sit down and think. There is no in between. I would love to read a horror book by this author.
    It is a good read.
âI received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This didn't affect my opinion of the book.â
    Dark, gothic poetry
Fairy Tale Destruction is a collection of dark poetry that is not for the faint of heart. It contains themes of love, hate, lust, beauty, ugliness, loss, pain and decay. Some of the imagery is very vivid and raw. I found the rhythms of the poems slightly catchier in the first part of the collection (Beast and Beauty). The poems in the second part (Love and Hate) were a little repetitive in subject matter but also seemed more personal.

A potpourri is a mixture, a medley, a miscellaneous hodgepodge of things not usually placed together, as in a book such as this. Gathered from a large collection of poems written over many years, some reflect emotions or events from personal experience. Some share observations of others, or reflections on life's meaning. These selections, arranged in no particular order or style, are designed to present frequent surprises. Enjoy....

A Potpourri of Poems by Linda Swift
From first to last, I found Lindaâs poetry entrancing and captivating. Her use of onomatopoeia and alliteration â two tools well-known but, unfortunately not always used with appropriateness and skill by all poets â is skilful, well-crafted, and often surprising.
I was particularly pleased with âTender â (for Naomi Stuart)â which is formulated with a feeling and touch that can only be experienced in reading the work.
She handles the often-difficult task of Haiku with a deftness that speaks of her years of experience and, Iâm sure, would be appreciated by the most rigorous of Japanese craftspersons, as in âIcy-winged snowbirdââ.
âWhite Stone Crossesâ tells a tale of a tragedy in a way no newspaper report or other means of portrayal could have done, leaving one with distinct and almost disturbing images of the horrified driver, the children, and those left to mourn.
There is, too, a touch of irony shimmering hazily almost on comedy, as in âAfterthought,â whilst a motherâs mourning of the hoped-for but unfulfilled plans of her childrensâ younger years comes through simply but well-told in âGoodbye, My Children.â
Lindaâs use of photographic images to separate poem from poem is skilful, the scenes appropriate to each setting, and add to the overall charm of her work.
Thank you, Linda, for your book; I shall keep it in my collection with pleasure.
    Adrian Scott (2 June 2015).
    Overwhemed by the beauty
This reader was and will always be overwhelmed by the beauty found in A Potpourri of Poems.Linda Swift captures tales in a few words and breaks your heart, mine at least, or brings joy and a burst of laughter. Beginning with a quote from Shakespeare, she begs the question, is the role playing me? A deep thought to make one wonder. Tender brought back the feeling of loss;by contrast Beware the Club cracked me up. I could go on and on but I'll end with Linda Swift has written a treasure with exceptional words and pictures.
This a beautiful poetry book by a very talented writer
This a beautiful poetry book by a very talented writer!!! Loved the photos, too!! It is very well done and would be

    Release date: 03-14-16

    Publisher's Summary:
After publishing 12 works from deep within me, the innate urge to express myself in an entirely different manner overtook me.
As far back as I can remember, reading poetry has always been a passion. It may well have been one of the key factors in choosing English Literature as my college major.
This collection is the result of exposing my soul and heart in a way I'd never dreamed of doing.
While my other works in publication are integral parts of me, I now understand that poetry is the essence of who I was, am, and forever will be.
With the understanding that these are my inaugural offerings and with the compassion to allow a heart without and soul within to falter, I hope you enjoy my poems.

    Tender serenading to his Mum
Without from Within, is a collection of 43 poems. Ronnie Shaw brings alive aspects of his life that heâs written about in his other books. But thereâs a finality to these ruminations. Itâs through his verses heâs able to put another spin on his amazing life. The poems are his homage to his mother. âWithin From Without is dedicated to my beloved mother, Anne Mae Shaw. May her sweet soul rest in God's loving embrace.â
He said that poetry abled him to express his soul in a way that other mediums couldnât. âWhile my other works in publication are integral parts of me, I now understand that poetry is the essence of who I was, am, and forever will be.â
Thereâs a Robert Frost element to his work. Iâm very particularly fond the poem Blue. Heâs got one more day at school to attend before he can go on a road trip thatâs sponsored by the Rotary Club.
"mind wanders back to the spring of 1967
only five days left to go that school year
teenage boy from Atlanta's inner city in
    jeopardy, free ten-day vacation hanging
in balance teetering on disaster because
    perfect attendance's sickly prospect grew
more and more dreary by feverish minute"
His mother is sick also and Ronnie doesnât want to leave her at the hospital. His mother tells him to move, âYou got a bus to catch.â Ronnie says the manly thing is to stay. But his mother knows he really wants to go on the trip, and tells him to scam.
3AM is another poem about his pops, and it's a tender gesture to a man he considered he's real dad.
These poems show a tender side to the author.
    Pain Hidden, Now Climbs Out
Ron Shaw reaches into his soul, a deep, invisible hole -- and jumps in. In a place in the soul, hidden, the pain from childhood lashes him savagely. Until YOU cry.
Ron Shaw is a wonderful poet
Very well written Ron Shaw is a wonderful talented individual, his poetry is very lovely...
and having a good time! In the poem
Mr. Shaw stimulates our minds with his poetry. His images transcend everyday life and touch the realm of what lies beyond. In the poem, "In Sleep Within," the poet provides images of sleeping late, staying up late, and having a good time! In the poem, "Poetrilogy," he provides a plethora of images that challenge and stimulate our thought processes. In the poem, "Pleasure and Pain," one of my favorites, it's so descriptive of the heart in poetic fashion. In the poem, "Perfection," Mr.
