    Title: The Lineup, Vol. 1
    Author: Hollywood 360 - producer
    Narrator: Bill Johnstone, full cast
    Format: Original Recording
Length: 5 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-25-16
    Publisher: Black Eye Entertainment
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Nostalgia Radio, Crime & Mystery
    Publisher's Summary:
From the golden age of radio comes 12 episodes of this popular and realistic police procedural.
The Lineup was a hard-boiled drama. Like Dragnet, it realistically showed police doing their jobs. The show always began with a police sergeant ordering suspects to stand at attention so that the victim, behind one-way glass, could try to identify the criminal. While the lineup was rarely the key to solving the case, it did give the show a rhythm and also allowed for humor in the interrogation of the suspects by the sergeant.
Bill Johnstone, best known as one of the voices of The Shadow, starred as Lieutenant Ben Guthrie. Wally Maher originally played Sergeant Matt Grebb, until the actor's death. His character was replaced by Sergeant Pete Carger, played by Jack Moyles. The supporting cast members were a who's who of Hollywood radio actors, including Howard McNear, William Conrad, Barton Yarborough, Hy Averback, and Herb Butterfield.
The series began as a summer replacement for The FBI in Peace and War in 1950, but soon got its own time slot and would remain on radio until the spring of 1953 before making a successful transition to television.
Twelve episodes included in this collection are "The Grocery Store Matter" (1 Feb 51), "The Silver Swan Case" (22 Feb 51), "The Molly about Seven Case" (27 Feb 51), "The Pointless Pierson Polemic Polarity" (5 Sep 51), "The Senile Slugging Case" (12 Sep 51), "The Fur-Flaunting Floozy" (26 Sep 51), "The Wild, Wild Woman Case" (4 Oct 51), "The Frivolous Forger Fracas" (11 Oct 51), "The Nicely Nixed Nixon Case" (18 Oct 51), "The Pixie-Picker Pickle Case" (8 Nov 51), "Bentley's Boo-Boo Case" (15 Oct 52), and "Buggered Bunco Boys" (12 Nov 52).

Title: The Whistler - More Than 500 Radio Shows!, Volume 1
    Author: J. Donald Wilson
    Narrator: Bill Forman
    Format: Original Recording
Length: 100 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-12-16
    Publisher: ABN
Genres: Nostalgia Radio, Crime & Mystery
    Publisher's Summary:
The Whistler was a radio mystery anthology that debuted on CBS Radio on May 16, 1942. The show was heard only on the West Coast and had Signal Oil as the main sponsor. There were attempts to broadcast the show on the East Coast, one in July to September 1946 and the other in March 1947 to September 1948, with Campbell Soup and Household Finance as the suggested sponsors.
The show centered on a character called The Whistler, the mysterious narrator of various murder stories. The role was given to popular radio announcer Bill Forman, although there were occasions where other personalities, like Marvin Miller, Bill Johnstone, Gale Gordon, Everett Clarke, and Joseph Kearns, took over.
Despite the show being broadcast on the West Coast only, The Whistler was able to become one of the most popular and longest-running crime mystery dramas. It ended on September 22, 1955.
Enjoy the most complete collection - more than 500 shows. This is volume one of three volumes.
Please note: This is an historical recording. The audio quality represents the technology of the time when it was produced.

Beware the sting in the tail!
What made the experience of listening to The Whistler - More than 500 Radio Shows!, Volume 1 the most enjoyable?
I really enjoyed these old timey radio shows of murder, mystery and suspense! Their vintage sound and the 'Signal Oil' adverts all add to the period charm. They kind of remind me of 'Tales of the Unexpected' in tone.
Who was your favorite character and why?
It has to be the Whistler himself with his mocking tone and all-knowing manner. After all, he knows the shadows that lurk in the hearts and minds of men and women who have strayed from the path etc. etc.!!
Have you listened to any of Bill Formans other performances? How does this one compare?
I have not, but his taunting and goading of the guilty characters is excellent and his creepy laugh! The haunting theme tune is also great.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
"Thought you were so clever, didn't you Marjorie? You thought no-one would ever find out... but you cannot escape THE WHISTLER!"

I've listened to Dragnet for years. These volumes appear as single editions in your library. Most of them have great sound quality. Because each story is individual you will not see reviews on the whole volume very often. Most reviews are on each story.
Most original radio episodes were sponsored by cigarette companies. Sometimes a plug for the cigarettes is made by Jack Webb, the primary voice of Dragnet, sometimes other celebrities will join the list of promoters. There are a few extra comments such as to attend church each week, become active in your community, serve on jury duty and even one which recommends reading your Bible during National Bible Week. Each episode has a story of crime and punishment, most have a twist for the culture of the 1940s and 1950s. Most stories could happen today. Heroin, drug use, stealing, forgery, murder - nothing different from our local news, what is different is leaving a dime for use of the phone, lunch plates costing $2, offering smokes to every person they meet along the way. Police officers can no longer afford to keep everyone in cigarettes the way these are passed out.
The radio crimes are less violent because language that could cross the airwaves was limited and could not use slang or street terms. This makes Dragnet episodes suitable for all ages. Worthwhile and certainly a great value when you consider the price and how many hours you get of listening. Dragnet is awesome!
