    Publisher: Charles River Editors
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Buddhism & Eastern Religions
    Publisher's Summary:
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? Throughout time, people have been religious by nature, and billions today adhere to unique faiths across the world. In Charles River Editors' Religions of the World, listeners can get caught up to speed on today's religions and yesterday's religions in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
In the west, Hinduism is a religion that everyone has heard of, but one that few nonpractitioners truly understand. Today, it is widely regarded as one of the world's great religions and considered the indigenous religion of India, with practices and beliefs stretching back thousands of years.
However, many of these so-called facts are actually erroneous. Hinduism, as it is conceived of today, is a conglomerate of a number of indigenous Indian religions; in fact, prior to the migration of Islam and the corporate invasion of the British, Hinduism may not have existed at all. Rather, a number of local religious traditions had very old belief systems dating back hundreds or thousands of years, depending on the tradition, and many worshiped gods that are no longer worshiped today. In essence, it was only the nonindigenous populations in India, namely the Turks and later the British, who defined what Hinduism was. The British in particular asked only a certain subset of native informants from Bengal "what their religion was" and got a very particular answer, giving rise to the west's perception of a singular religious Indian tradition known as Hinduism.

I felt my body healing as I listened!! I will recommend this for everyone.
    Chakras
it's very informative and the narraitor was excellent...it's a great overview of the Chakra system..
    Great Information
great Information for someone who had no idea even what chakras were.. great information will listen to again
    Chakras for Dummies
I'm sorry but this book never told you how to balance a chakra. It is extremely repetitive and dummed down. The book gives valuable information at times but you have no where to go with that information because you are not educated on the how to....
    good start on topic
A solid overview, and a good jumping off point. But hardly everything one needs to know! The author herself discusses the long history behind chakras. Not something that can be completely covered in 30 minutes while also discussing the other necessary topics.
The narrator was clear and easy ti understand with excellent ennunciation. However I found myself wishing that the narrator would have read in a more natural manner. The almost rhythmic pauses (perhaps for breath) became distracting.

This is the audiobook version of Metta: Universal Love WH365-6, in which the founder of the Maha Bodhi Society in India explains the ethics, the psychology, the blessings and power of metta, with instructions on the traditional practice of metta-bhavana meditation.
"But let not metta be mistaken as a mere sentiment. It is the power of the strong. If the leaders from different walks of life were to give metta a fair trial, no principle or guideline to action would be found to possess greater efficiency or fruitfulness in all spheres. If man decides to substitute metta as a policy of action for aggression and ill will, the world will turn into a veritable abode of peace. For it is only when man shall have peace within himself, and boundless goodwill for others, that peace in the world will become enduring."

    Title: Essence of Buddhism
Subtitle: An Introduction to Its Philosophy and Practice
    Author: Traleg Kyabgon
    Narrator: Paul Ansdell
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-09-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 50 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Buddhism & Eastern Religions
    Publisher's Summary:
This lucid overview of the Buddhist path takes the perspective of the three "vehicles" of Tibetan Buddhism: the Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana. While these vehicles are usually presented as a historical development, they are here equated with the attitudes that individuals bring to their Buddhist practice. Basic to them all, however, is the need to understand our own immediate condition. The primary tool for achieving this is meditation, and The Essence of Buddhism serves as a handbook for the various meditative approaches of Buddhist practice.
Beginning with the Four Noble Truths, Traleg Rinpoche incorporates the expansive vision of the bodhisattva path and the transformative vision of Tantra. The final chapters present the transcendent view of Mahamudra. This view dispenses with all dualistic fixations and directly realizes the natural freedom of the mind itself. Along the way, the author provides vivid definitions of fundamental concepts such as compassion, emptiness, and Buddha-nature, and answers common questions: Why does Buddhism teach that there is "no self"? Are Buddhist teachings pessimistic? Does Buddhism encourage social passivity? What is the role of sex in Buddhist Tantra? Why is it said that "samsara is nirvana"? Does it take countless lifetimes to attain enlightenment, or can it be achieved in a moment?

    Great author!
This is the second book that I've gotten by this author. Compared to other books, by other people, he has been the most comprehensive. Subjects that I have learned about from other authors have been explained again, leaving me with a deeper understanding of the topic that I did before. I hope to find more by him.
    Excellent.
Excellent introduction to Buddhism by a Tibetan guru. It covers and ties in the key aspects and teachings from the three main vehicles, Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vahjrayana traditions, and brings in elements from some unique and enlightening schools (i.e., Mahamudra).
Portions of the instruction may be difficult to understand for some beginners, but don't worry. Buddhism is so rich that this happens to all of us no matter at what level we consider ourselves to be at. Making notes of those sections that may be unknown helps to later do more research on.
The audio book is also great because it places the different teachings within their own context, and it stays on each subject just about the right amount of time so that it moves forward building on what was previously discussed.
    Good introduction to buddism
Interesting listening, good explanation of the subject, detailed but not too complicated, worth hearing again. Well written and narration was excellent.
This is the best book on Buddhism I have read
What made the experience of listening to Essence of Buddhism the most enjoyable?

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 36 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Buddhism & Eastern Religions
    Publisher's Summary:
It can be hard for those of us living in the 21st century to see how 14th-century Buddhist teachings still apply. When youre trying to figure out which cell phone plan to buy or brooding about something someone wrote about you on Facebook, lines like "While the enemy of your own anger is unsubdued, though you conquer external foes, they will only increase" can seem a little obscure. Thubten Chodrons illuminating explication of Togmay Zangpos revered text, The Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas, doesnt just explain its profound meaning; in dozens of passages she lets her students and colleagues share first-person stories of the ways that its teachings have changed their lives. Some bear witness to dramatic transformations - making friends with an enemy prisoner-of-war, finding peace after the murder of a loved one - while others tell of smaller lessons, like waiting for something to happen or coping with a minor injury.

    Not what I expected...
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The author seems to think there's only one way to do everything -- one way to meditate, one way to sit while meditating, one way to learn Buddhism, etc. -- and they're very biased and dismissive of other methods. Having meditated for twenty years, not in a way recommended by the author, I've benefitted in deep and lasting ways, and I can say from experience that this author is mistaken in their judgments. Frankly, I'm not sure I even understand what the thought is behind dismissing other ways of doing things. Why not respect our differences? If someone can run twelve miles and feel at peace and also examine their thoughts and find greater peace all at the same time, why would you want to argue with that? I also found it odd that the author said that you can only learn properly from having a teacher physically in front of you. The Buddha was said to be the first enlightened being, so there was no one to teach him enlightenment. He learned on his own and found enlightenment anyway. Why would following that example and learning on one's own be such a terrible thing? -- And how could it possibly be the wrong way of doing things? After a while, I found the very judgmental, dismissive tone of the author to be unfriendly, unpleasant, and I couldn't connect to what they were saying, nor did I find it useful in practice. I think a more accepting and respectful attitude to one's students would be a lot more appropriate, especially from a practitioner of Buddhism.
Would you ever listen to anything by Bhikshuni Thubten Chodron again?
I have no interest in listening to anything by this author again, they fell short in too many areas.
What about Graeme Malcolms performance did you like?
I felt like he enunciated well so it wasn't difficult to understand what he was reading. Sometimes I have to turn the audio up really high to make out what readers are saying, but this wasn't the case for this book.
Was Don't Believe Everything You Think worth the listening time?
No, I couldn't even finish it -- I stopped after several chapters.
    Any additional comments?
The author wrote this book in English and it got distributed, at the very least, to the entire United States.

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Buddhism & Eastern Religions
    Publisher's Summary:
The Bhagavad Gita, perhaps the most famous of all Indian scriptures, is universally regarded as one of the world's spiritual and literary masterpieces. Richard Davis tells the story of this venerable and enduring book, from its origins in ancient India to its reception today as a spiritual classic that has been translated into more than 75 languages. The Gita opens on the eve of a mighty battle, when the warrior Arjuna is overwhelmed by despair and refuses to fight. He turns to his charioteer, Krishna, who counsels him on why he must. In the dialogue that follows, Arjuna comes to realize that the true battle is for his own soul. Davis highlights the place of this legendary dialogue in classical Indian culture, and then examines how it has lived on in diverse settings and contexts. He looks at the medieval devotional traditions surrounding the divine character of Krishna and traces how the Gita traveled from India to the West, where it found admirers in such figures as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Aldous Huxley. Davis explores how Indian nationalists like Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda used the Gita in their fight against colonial rule, and how contemporary interpreters reanimate and perform this classical work for audiences today.
An essential biography of a timeless masterpiece, this audiobook is an ideal introduction to the Gita and its insights into the struggle for self-mastery that we all must wage.

Excellent, wide-ranging intro to the Gita
    Any additional comments?
I have now listened to this book three times, and each time I have learned new things. It covers an enormous range of topics, including both ancient and contemporary approaches to the Gita, and it introduces all the historical figures so that they really come to life in memorable ways. Even if you have never read the Gita, this is a great book to read, and the final chapter which compares some different translations will be a big help to you in finding which version will be best suited to your interests.

    Publisher's Summary:
Two lectures on Buddhism by Bhikkhu Bodhi. The first part explores the Buddha's mission, the second his doctrine and path.
    Excerpt from the introduction:
"That the Buddha's teaching should remain perennially relevant throughout the changing eras of human history, that his message should be undimmed by the sheer passage of time, is already implicit in the title by which he is most commonly known. For the word 'Buddha', as is widely known, is not a proper name but an honorific title meaning 'the Enlightened One', 'the Awakened One'. This title is given to him because he has woken up from the deep sleep of ignorance in which the rest of the world is absorbed; because he has penetrated the deepest truths about the human condition; and because he proclaims those truths with the aim of awakening others and enabling them to share his realization. Despite the shifting scenarios of history over 25 centuries, despite the change in world views and modes of thought from one epoch to the next, the basic truths of human life do not change. They remain constant, and are recognizable to those mature enough to reflect on them and intelligent enough to understand them. For this reason, even today in our age of jet travel, computer technology, and genetic engineering, it is perfectly fitting that the One who has Awakened should speak to us in words that are just as powerful, just as cogent, just as illuminating as they were when they were first proclaimed long ago in the towns and villages of Northeast India."

Excellent lectures about Buddhism and the Buddha from the Theravada tradition
    Another Gem by Bhikkhu Bodhi
When passing through Sri Lanka recently I visited the BPS bookstore and saw this booklet. It is a little gem.
The booklet of about 45 pages consists of two lectures given by the scholarly monk, Bhikkhu Bodhi, to an audience with little prior knowledge of the Buddha or Buddhism. The Description given above with the "Excerpt from the Introduction" gives an excellent overview of the lecture: The Buddha and His Mission.
The second lecture, The Buddha's Dhamma, discusses the Doctrine and the Path. The Doctrine is the philosophical overview that focuses on an understanding of the Four Noble Truths. The Path is the practice, the practical application of the Four Noble Truths using the Noble Eightfold Path to come out of suffering.
This booklet is not only a succinct introduction for understanding the Buddha, the Doctrine, and the Path, it is also useful as a reminder of details for those who know the Buddha's teachings through Dhamma readings or by walking the Path.
The end of the lecture emphasizes that developing a Buddha Dhamma practice is not just for monks and nuns. The practice integrates spiritual development into the affairs of everyday life that will bring to society more harmony, peace, and good will.

    Publisher's Summary:
Is there more to Buddhism than sitting in silent meditation? Is modern Buddhism relevant to the problems of daily life? Does it empower individuals to transform their lives? Or has Buddhism become too detached, so still and quiet that the Buddha has fallen asleep? Waking the Buddha tells the story of the Soka Gakkai International, the largest, most dynamic Buddhist movement in the world today - and one that is waking up and shaking up Buddhism so it can truly work in ordinary people's lives. Drawing on his long personal experience as a Buddhist teacher, journalist, and editor, Clark Strand offers broad insight into how and why the Soka Gakkai, with its commitment to social justice and its egalitarian approach, has become a role model, not only for other schools of Buddhism, but for other religions as well.
