I wonder what happened to the writer that produced the first Godsland book because it sure doesn't sound like who ever wrote this piece of trash!

I am not sure what the actual magic system is for this book, it's basically what ever makes for more feelings and random stuff.

Interesting diversion

Who was your favorite character and why?

This story details a anomaly in the series which makes it more interesting in a lot of ways. By now, you know the prophecy but this books suggests another path--adding to the lure of the entire story line.

This is an older set but I had already read the books. I honestly enjoyed the audit versions which brought a different dimension to the series. I strongly recommend all of them. I just wish you could get the series as a set from Audible. The is a lot of American Indian allusions to this which adds to the interest/fascination.

Excellent Story and Narration!

I thought this book was very engaging and exciting. Excellent story and narration! Looking forward to the next installment!

Cliche fantasy with little to make it stand out.

There are so many fantasy books available these days that it is quite difficult for an author to be unique and for the most part The Innkeeper's Son fails to separate itself from the pack. There are plenty of standard fantasy clichés to be had here along with a fair amount of "deus ex machina" throughout. The characters themselves are pretty typical and the premise is tired so while the book isn't terrible there just isn't much unique about it.

The story is centered around a thousand year old prophecy which foretells the downfall of the current evil ruler, Desirmor. The time has finally come for it be fulfilled and the savior from the prophecy happens to be the naïve son of an innkeeper. His mute sister also has a role to play fighting the evil that consumes the land and when the bad guys show up at the inn they both narrowly escape. Since they are separated after the attack the book has one story thread for each of them. I found the sister's story to be the more interesting of the two and it contained the only characters with some personality.

Duncan White's performance wasn't any better than the writing. Either the recording was sped up for the first half of the book or he read it too quickly. Despite the fact that he does a decent variety of voices he is fairly monotone and the character interactions don't feel genuine.

More fantasy books should be written like this

If you could sum up Betrayal in the Highlands in three words, what would they be?

Unforgettable non-traditional hero

Betrayal in the Highland was a great continuation of the first book in the series Riddle in Stone. The hero Edmund definitely grows into his hero shoes in this book, but he is definitely still not your typical cookie cutter hero. The antics of Edmund and his eclectic group of friends kept me interested from start to end.

The right amount of humour, grit, adventure and goblins left me with a book that I did not want to put down.

This series has put Robert Evert into my list of favourite authors along with Kevin Hearne, Brandon Sanderson, Jim Butcher, Peter V Brett, Patrick Rothfuss and Michael J Sullivan. If you enjoy their books, you should check out the Riddle in Stone series.

Easy listen. Enjoyable story.

I love how devoted the characters are to each other.

This is not epic fantasy. If you are looking for something deep like George R.R. Martin, Abercrombie, or Jordan, you may be disappointed. If you want a break from heavy politics and war this is a great book. Wonderful story, wonderful characters. It is not a shallow book, it is just not rife with politics and war. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and the second was just as enjoyable.

What made the experience of listening to Betrayal in the Highlands the most enjoyable?

This story is something i've never read before, with the most unlikely hero I've ever heard of. A middle aged, balding, stuttering scholar, turned into the hero of the book.

What other book might you compare Betrayal in the Highlands to and why?

In terms of how it's written, i'd say Roberts writing is as easly and interesting to read as David Eddings, however his story is darker than said author.

narration hurts the story

The story is interesting but the narration really hurts the overall feel of the book. pronunciation drives me nuts like pronouncing melee as "My-Lah"

I also have issues with recognizing characters because there is no real variation between characters making it more work than I would prefer when listening because I end up trying to figure out who said what.

The ending doesn't really feel like it's a close of a chapter but it's interesting enough.

I enjoyed this series, although some of the characters can be quite painful in their attitudes. The story came to a good conlcusion. Then the author tried to restart the whole thing. Jal Nish reappears with no explanation of how he escaped the battle, survived and came to control the 'tears'. Too much for me, won't be reading any more of this series

It's definitely one of the audio books that I won't mind listening to again, as it's got some very interesting twists in the story that keep the listener guessing, "What next?".

Mirron Willis does a great job of bringing the characters to life as usual and is amazing at switching voices from one character to another

Just kept me guessing till the end and was happy with the outcome
