    A well done series continues!
Enjoyable read again from Joshua Simon. The characters continue to grow and flesh out with each new installment of the series. I enjoyed the addition of several of the side characters in this book as well. Each had their own story to tell and were vital to the plot. Action, humor and heart make up a lot of these stories and keep making them compelling to read.
    Great entertainment!
I have read most of his books and have had a great time following the characters through some pretty exciting adventures. I can't wait to see what's coming next. I think Joshua P. Simon is a very entertaining story teller and would recommend him to anyone in need of a good tale.
    Perfect conclusion
An awesome trilogy with just the right amount of twists and turns. Simon keeps us entertained and still manages to hold the last pieces of our characters until the end. This story has the makings of a true epic fantasy series. Cannot wait for the next installment.
great continuation of a great series
great continuation of a great series, the twist on characters make it an interesting read while allowing the fast pace book to develop.

Another great story in the series!

Blackheart's Legacy: Fun for any age group
What did you love best about BlackHeart's Legacy?
With a little imagination, you can cast yourself into the role on any of the characters.
What was one of the most memorable moments of BlackHeart's Legacy?
Enjoyed Blackheart being outsmarted by the 12 year old, Jon.
Have you listened to any of Paul Woodsons other performances before? How does this one compare?
No I haven't, but I'll be watching for his name from now on. Great job.
    Any additional comments?
Enjoyed the book very much. The author pulls you right into the story. Job well done.
    Fun, fun, and more fun!
my 11 tear ikd son and I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and are eagerly looking forward to the next!
What an adventure for any age!
    Any additional comments?
What a fantastic adventure! Meant to be for 9 through 14 year olds, but Im telling you right now, I found it exciting with time travel to 1692, Port Royal, Jamaica Islands. Its everything a youngster would love and those of us oldies ready to travel to far-off lands. But this time travel was an oops, almost ending in disaster.
Traveling with Jon on his journey has enriched my life, says Copus. I cant wait to see where he takes me next and what we find there.
What a fun adventure with Jon and his Grammy and later Allistair at the infamous Pirates Babylon, better known as Port Royal in the Jamaican Islands.
We didnt know where we were when we eventually reappeared other than it was 1692. However, Sally Copus did a terrific job, along with narrator Paul Woodson, through her words and his way of storytelling to bring us up to speed. We saw the forest where the Carousel landed, the town of Port Royal with ships in the harbor, the pirates and people a little unsavory.
Jon separates from his grandmother (not such a good idea Jon), however this creates a bunch of adventure we shared with Jon. Grammy, dressed as a young lad, eventually locates Jon when she cleverly listens for any word from the men coming off the ships.
Now BlackHeart was an unusual pirate and we find out how in the storytelling.

    Publisher's Summary:
Islands in the Mist breathes new life into ancient Welsh mythology, masterfully weaving its characters into a rich tapestry of heroism and sacrifice.
The great warrior Bran has been called home from the battlefield to his mother's deathbed, where he vows to solve the strange mystery surrounding what fatally attacked her in the night. He travels to the Crossroads, seeking the wise counsel of Talhaiarn, high priest and advisor to his clan, where he learns similar attacks have been reported by clans to the north and east - horrors that Talhaiarn determines are the dark handiwork of the powerful Cerridwen, a rogue priestess of the sisterhood that dwells on an island surrounded by the misty waters of Lake Tegid.
On his journey Bran encounters the fiery, red-haired Lucia, widow to a Roman centurion, and her strangely gifted stable boy, Gwion, an enigmatic child graced with understanding far beyond his years. Lucia possesses "the Sight", an ability that has plagued her from the time she was a small girl, tormenting her with visions of terrible things that invariably come to pass. Fate leads Lucia to discover that many of her maternal ancestors were masterful women gifted with psychic abilities, and some of them have been watching her from the shadows for years.
Upon returning to his village, Bran finds himself at odds with the hot-tempered Aelhaearn, who is determined to become their clan's next chieftain. Much to Aelhaearn's disappointment, Bran's sister, now priestess in her mother's place, convinces the clan to choose Bran for the honor instead.
In the aftermath of their conflict, Bran learns something shocking about his rival. Slowly all are pulled into the seductive maelstrom of Cerridwen's power, and though many will fight bravely, only one is able to make the sacrifice required to defeat her.

I loved listening to this tale
Islands in the Mist was a captivating tale, told beautifully in the Audible version. The narrator (John Keating) was able to put the listener in the middle of the action, perfectly capturing the landscape and the of spirit the characters, a seamless bridge to the story.
The story itself was engaging, and ultimately, surprising. Any preconceived notions about the genre flew out the window, making it tale worthy of your time. Definitely worth a listen or a read.
    A captivating and entertaining read.
A captivating and entertaining read. Very enjoyable and I'm already downloading book two in the series.
Fantastic story, left us wanting more.
My husband and I listened to this story on a road trip from Alaska to Utah. We enjoyed each chapter more than the last. The characters are unique and likable. The writing is brilliant and the reading performance is great. The end had me in tears. We can't wait for the next book!!!
    Fabulous tale!
This was such a pleasure to listen to! Great story, kept me interested the whole time. Narrator brought it to life and was very enjoyable. Can't wait for the sequel!
Not Bad but not the best.
I think my major issue with this book isn't the story, which if fact is pretty good, but with the narration. I have no earthly idea what accent he is trying to imitate but it certainly isn't Welsh or any other accent from the British Isles. He makes the protagonist sound like an idiot. I think this would have been a much much better listen if He hadn't ruined it for me.

    surprise ending
Would you try another book from J.D. Oswald and/or Wayne Forester?
Well I am stuck now, so other readers be prepared. For those of you who thought this was a trilogy, guess what? The author seems to think it needs to go on, and on, and on. If I had known that it is going to be another endless Game of Thrones want-to-be, I probably would have waited until the whole series was completed before I purchased it.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The 3 works have many repetitive details. If those repetitions were removed and the author concentrated on those issues germane to moving the story along, and closure, then it would probably have been very nice trilogy. As is, who knows when it will end?
What does Wayne Forester bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    Nicely narrated.
A bit more than book 1
Book 2 was a better overall story than the first, but for some reason we keep going back to the Dragon that has his name on the book. He's just the worst character in the series. And it's a little hard to follow/understand what's happening between him and Magog.
Errol's story is much better though and he seems to be filling into his role rather well, if not a little hesitantly. He's definitely not the BA we were hoping for at the start of this book, but still a good character. But Errol meeting up with all of his unbeknownst family throughout this book is fun and entertaining. And his powers are growing. The BA is apparently going to be Klum; which is okay too since he seems to be the best overall man in the entire world of Gwlad.
And again, I come to the point where I'm actually following Queen Beulah more than anybody else, she's a "W(b)itch" at heart, but then we see the side of her where she actually starts to care about something other than herself for once. She's by far the best character in the series and I'm very interested to see where she ends up.
So to conclude: Benfro shouldn't be the main character of this book, Errol is showing great promise, Klum appears to be a BA, Melyn is a worm, and Beulah is the one I'm routing for. I'd waste a credit/money on this book.
Oh, and again, the narration is just okay. Better than the first, but nothing that makes you want more.
    twists and turns
This book starts off were the last one ended, and introduces more problems to the mix. I am interested to see were Oswald is going to go with this series.
I prefer the audio book to the ebook, because of the narrator.

I keep waiting for awesome..and waiting and..
Its almost good and then we digress and the protagonists make another goofy move...you can even see where its headed. And why do the antagonists have it so easy? Like no one knows this stuff and suddenly or then they get help from...really? I just got annoyed after a while. More so because there is such potential for a great story. This is my last of this series unless I hit the "need a book bad wall" again.
    No Progress
What did you like best about The Golden Cage? What did you like least?
In this Book there is not a lot of development in the main characters. They change locations slightly but not their abilities or who personalities.
Would you be willing to try another book from J.D. Oswald? Why or why not?
Yes but but I would hope for more of a story next time.
What three words best describe Wayne Foresters performance?
    Great performance.
Did The Golden Cage inspire you to do anything?
No, unless you consider running from one disaster to another inspiring.
    Hard to put down
The entire series kept me entranced. I loved it. The narration is storytelling at its best.
I'm routing for Beulah and Klum
I frankly don't care about the Dragon's anymore and I don't think Oswald does either. Beulah and Klum are uniting a Kingdom with ease. It's actually great to hear it happen. And Klum is truly turning into an amazing leader, while Beulah has apparently found a heart!
I just don't care about a boy and a Dragon who's chief concern is defeating an already defeated dragon since Dragon's can't apparently die in this world! The way I see it, if Errol should just kill Benfro then all the problems in Gwlad would be solved. He could go and live in peace anywhere he wanted, and Magog couldn't get another body.
Then there's all this stuff about Benfro and Errol getting caught, it's pretty sad what they've become but I don't care. Long Live Beulah.
Narration is the same as the previous books. No better, no worse.
    very slow
felt like not much happened in this book and I found my attention straying quite alot, I'm invested in the characters now though due to the previous books so will continue with the series

Rough Magick is Book One in the GnomeSaga trilogy by fantasy standout Kenny Soward. It continues in Book Two, Tinkermage (December 2014), and concludes in Cogweaver (February 2015).
    Critic Reviews:
"The action scenes are wonderfully bloody, ruthless, and rough. The magic system differed nicely from others. It was great to read about necromancy, thaumaturgy, polymagic... the three schools of gnomish magic." (Beakerheads, Technocrats and Neverminders)
"Kenny Soward is an excellent storyteller and writes from his heart. In my opinion, he's an author to watch [and] I'm personally looking forward to reading the sequel, because Rough Magick is such an entertaining fantasy book!" (Seregil of Rhiminee, RisingShadow website)
    Members Reviews:
Audiobook is in my top three performances
My life was changed when at the age of thirteen and a friend showed me Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis. My first adventure into living dragons, half elven heroes, knights, princesses, and more captivated my imagination with the joy of discovery and wonder. Some of the characters, like the mage, Raistlin, had dark pasts, but the overall feeling was hopeful. Sad things happened, but you never gave up hope.
Somewhere along the years my love of Fantasy has been usurped for that of high tech battles or survival tales against monsters. Ive also become more busy than I seem able to handle.
And then I won a book giveaway for Rough Magick (GnomeSaga #1) by Kenny Soward. I was immediately impressed by the care with which hed wrapped his book, followed by the exquisite cover art and even some goodies in a poster of the same and a key chain mockup of a silver sprocket used for currency in their world.
The layout of the print edition is beautiful and evocative of the kind of atmosphere my thirteen year old past dreams of reliving.
Sadly, Im no longer on that week long vacation where I could sit and read Dragons for as long as I cared for. Im a father and husband, writing fiction on top of my job and all the in between that steals my time in fantasyland.
Rough Magicks first chapter blew me away with potential for a phenomenal story to come. The combination of rock monsters, living ships, and the magick thriving all around as two powerful forces collide awed me with Sowards abilities to weave a frantic and colorful first chapter.

Meanwhile, the saboteur Bueralan infiltrates the army that is approaching her home to learn its terrible secret. Split between the three points of view, the narrative of Godless reaches its conclusion during an epic siege, where Ayae, Zaifyr, and Bueralan are forced not just into conflict with those invading, but with those inside the city who wish to do them harm.

    ok story, narration bad
This review is written without finishing the book. The writing for the story itself is ok, but it gets confusing from time to time because one minute your talking about a scene of something that's happening now and the next second your a decade to a few thousand years in the past depending on the characters point of view and just and abruptly the viewpoint switches back to the present again.
The biggest problem with this audio book is the narration. Some narrators perform with passion and others make separate voices for the different characters and this narator does neither. Everyone sounds like they are all speaking with an arrogant insincere tone of voice that some times sounds arrogant but almost always very even and never varying much. Once in the book the narrator forgets himself for a minute and the characters voice changes and actually sounds angry. So far 3/4 of the way through and that has only happened once. The strait level reading would be OK, but the nasal tone of voice were they always sound like they are getting away with something with EVERY SINGLE WORD gets grating after the first hour.

This is the best book I have read since William Kent Krueger's "Ordinary Grace", and there have been many books in between. Willy Vlautin has captured me aa a new fan and I have just ordered his three previous novels. Read this book everyone...ypu won't be disappointed.
    Hmmmmm
Idk. It just kind of ended. One loose thread, but thatâs life. Maybe I say it âjust endedâ because I didnât want it to end. I wanted to see what happened further with one of the characters. The book seemed to open a door to view the lives of several related characters, then after a time, gently close the door and the view into their lives. The book is very simply writtenâno prose or play on words or pretty descriptions in this book, just plain storytelling in the sparest way possible. Very likable and believable characters; in spite of the spare writing style, Iâll miss them.
    Like taking a deep breath
The only thing I hated about The Free was that it ended, and the characters were no longer in my life. What good, kind, gracious human beings exist in this world. In this ordinary, everyday world filled with unbelievable horror we are shown how to be gracious even in the face of the worst things imaginable.
    Another Amazing Vlautin Work
I was always a huge fan of Vlautin's lyrical work with Richmond Fontaine, so when he started publishing his stories I was very excited. HIs first three novels were great: heartbreaking, sparse, intimate, and beautifully-written portraits of down and out everyday people of the West. I love how rooted his stories are in place (whether it is WA, OR, or NV). I really loved "Lean on Pete," and couldn't put it down, despite my frequently-misted eyesight :). "The Fall" continues Willy's run of excellence. As usual, he brings to life the desperate, downtrodden, unsung characters of everyday Western life and makes them hauntingly unforgettable. For all the heartbreak, there is just as much hope packed into these pages. No surprise--this is one of the best books of the year, and further evidence that Vlautin is one of the best American writers of his generation.
a cross between Raymond Carver stories and "The Road" by Cromac McCarthy
Excellent book by an author with whom I was unfamiliar. The story feels like a cross between Raymond Carver stories and The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It follows three characters whose lives intersect, and who are marginalized to a greater or lesser extent. One characterâs dream metaphorically characterizes the story.
