    Outstanding!
And if you listen to these books you'll understand the Headline. Equal or exceeds Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet Series without all the male - female interaction. This is definitely a guy's series. Think of it as a Submarine in Space. Good characters and excellent plot. If you like hard Sci-Fi mixed with space battles then this is for you.
At first I thought Ray Chase sounded a little like Scott Brick but it is soon apparent that he is Brick's equal in all respects. Story flow is excellent and the character's voices are also very well done.
Go ahead. Spend your credit. you won't be disappointed.
The Answer should have been "Nuts!"
I will entirely agree with a previous reviewer. This reads more exactly like a cross of Patrick O'Brian's Maturin/Aubrey series (21 odd book series starting with Master and Commander) and a number of other SciFi offerings from contemporary and similar authors such as Evan Currie and BV Larson. At first, I thought this may have been nearly a rip-off of that classic O'Brian series, but I think that was a misjudgement. This work stands on its own. In this case, substituting Age of Sail ships for their space equivalents was a nice touch and reminded me why I liked the other series. I had really thought, given the historical nuances the author was drawing from (blue water naval terminology and overall military history) I was really hoping that answer would have been something truly historic and poetic as I have suggested. Either way, I will happily gobble up any future book you write and if at all possible please keep the same narrator.
Max Robicheaux - A Leader of Men
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. This book and its predecessor just zipped along. I had a chunk of fun just sitting there as my mind followed the story. The Krag are the perfect enemy - heartless and genocidal, bent on the total liquidation of all things human.
I learned a bunch of eclectic things about space, space travel and naval tradition and customs even though this book is set over 300 years in the future.
What did you like best about this story?
How Commander Robicheaux interacted with his crew, especially the little tykes like Park.

    Title: Annihilation
Subtitle: Southern Reach Trilogy, Book 1

    Narrator: Carolyn McCormick
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 6 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-27-14
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 103 votes
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The first volume of the extraordinary Southern Reach trilogy - now a major motion picture written and directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina) and starring Natalie Portman and Oscar Isaac.
For thirty years, Area X has remained mysterious and remote behind its intangible border an environmental disaster zone, though to all appearances an abundant wilderness. The Southern Reach, a secretive government agency, has sent eleven expeditions to investigate Area X. One has ended in mass suicide, another in a hail of gunfire, the eleventh in a fatal cancer epidemic. Now four women embark on the twelfth expedition into the unknown.
    Critic Reviews:
"A tense and chilling psychological thriller about an unravelling expedition and the strangeness within us. A little Kubrick, a lot of Lovecraft, the novel builds with an unbearable tension and claustrophobic dread that lingers long afterwards. I loved it." (Lauren Beukes, award-winning author of Zoo City and The Shining Girls)"Original and beautiful, maddening and magnificent." (Warren Ellis)"One of those books where it all comes together - the story and the prose and the ideas, all braided into a triple helix that gives rise to something vibrant and alive. Something that grows, word-by-word, into powerful, tangled vines that creep into your mind and take hold of it. Annihilation is brilliant and atmospheric, a novel that has the force of myth." (Charles Yu, author of How to Live in a Science Fictional Universe)
    "A contemporary masterpiece." (The Guardian)
    Members Reviews:
    Pompous and sophomoric
Starts off rather promisingly and then degenerates into swollen sophomoric verbiage. Last chapter was especially embarrassing and painful to listen to.
    Didn't like the narrator
The narrator has a very odd way of reading which made the story quite hard to follow. Her intonation was all over the place, yet her pace and volume stayed the same, even in dramatic or suspenseful moments. The overall effect was one of emotionlessness. I am not sure if this was a conscious decision on her part (given that the protagonist is a scientist writing an expedition journal this would make sense) but it didn't work for me at all.
Very very slow &boring. Hope the movie is better.
This story is so slow paced and short. Most of the book is just random overly described scenes that you need to be high to find entertaining.
    Abstract, muddled waste of time
I really had to push myself to finish this book. I found the author's writing style to be abstract to the point of frustration. I don't know how someone could express so many words to convey absolutely no useful information. No feeling of closure by the end of the book, simply relief that its over.

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Beneath the gaze of the gods, the mighty armies of Greece and Troy met in fierce and glorious combat, scrupulously following the text set forth in Homer's timeless narrative. But that was before 21st-century scholar Thomas Hockenberry stirred the bloody brew, causing an enraged Achilles to join forces with his archenemy, Hector, and turn his murderous wrath on Zeus and the entire pantheon of divine manipulators; before the swift and terrible mechanical creatures that catered for centuries to the pitiful idle remnants of Earth's human race began massing in the millions, to exterminate rather than serve.
And now all bets are off.
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent, But Sometimes Overwhelming
Would you consider the audio edition of Olympos to be better than the print version?
The narrator was excellent. His characterizations kept everything understandable, and in a book with this many characters and story lines that is not a simple feat.
What other book might you compare Olympos to and why?
The last 3 books of the Hyperion Series. I am a huge fan of Simmons but his books are different from other contemporary Sci Fi and challenging in their own regard. His grasp of literature and history is impressive, and his inter textual, nuanced storytelling combines literature, history, science and pop culture in a way that makes the complexity of the underlying narrative pale in comparison. His books give you a reason to do research on Proust, Shakespeare and ancient history, just so you can keep up with the story. I cannot think of another author who works this territory and does so in a impressive manner. I enjoyed the Hyperion Series and this series is just as entertaining and challenging. This is not a light read, but if you want to invest the time and energy the payoff is substantial.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The ending scenes of the book brought everything together, something I did not think would be possible mid-way through the series. There are many, many things going on but everything is resolved in a way that is logical and satisfying.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No way, this is a huge book. If you are a Dan Simmons fan you realize early on that this is a big time investment but you commit to get lost in his world, and to enjoy things while you are there.
    Any additional comments?
Good production. The narrator was great. I hope Simmons returns to these types of stories, his current approach are more horror and contemporary novels. His Sci Fi imagination is not only impressive but needed in the genre. Great stuff.
    Classic Simmons
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This book is classic Simmons, he likes to take the classics, turn them inside out and spin them, dice them, cook them and serve them with gravy and potatoes . If you don't mind Homer spinning in his grave, you will like this book.
    Any additional comments?
I like Dan Simmons as an author, he keeps turning out great stories time after time. I've read several bad reviews of this book, don't understand why. It could be me.

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
In a world renowned even within a galaxy full of wonders, a crime within a war. For one man it means a desperate flight, and a search for the one - maybe two - people who could clear his name. For his brother it means a life lived under constant threat of treachery and murder. And for their sister, even without knowing the full truth, it means returning to a place she'd thought abandoned forever.
Only the sister is not what she once was; Djan Seriy Anaplian has changed almost beyond recognition to become an agent of the Culture's Special Circumstances section, charged with high-level interference in civilizations throughout the greater galaxy.
Concealing her new identity - and her particular set of abilities - might be a dangerous strategy, however. In the world to which Anaplian returns, nothing is quite as it seems; and determining the appropriate level of interference in someone else's war is never a simple matter.
Matter is a novel of dazzling wit and serious purpose. An extraordinary feat of storytelling and breathtaking invention on a grand scale, it is a tour de force from a writer who has turned science fiction on its head.

    What happened to Peter Kenny?
    Any additional comments?
I have loved this series, and the narration has been no small part. While this narration is decent, it was made worse in the inevitable comparison to the previous narrator, Peter Kenny, who was excellent.
As for the book, of course Banks is wonderful. A bit overdone at the end, but clever throughout.
A rambling tale of a monarchy
This is by far my least favorite culture series book yet. The heavy medieval storyline did nothing for me. I made it all the way through, but the payoff wasn't worth the cost of the lost time listening to it. Certainly interesting parts, but for the most part I found it boring.
    A stellar performance
What did you love best about Matter?
This is a great book, though not one of the best in the Culture series (The Use of Weapons and the Player of Games will always loom large over the series as some of the best SF of all time). But Longworth's performance really elevates the book and he does a stellar job of giving different speech patterns to the different characters and making them come alive. Highly recommended.
    Love Iain M. Banks
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Love Iain M. Banks writing. But the narrator is highly annoying. I will finish this book on my kindle.
What didnt you like about Toby Longworths performance?
    Horrible, annoying voices of characters.
    Great book!
Really liked the book, it's a very interesting story. My only real complaint is that Peter did not read it. The guy that did, did a good job... but it's not the same.

For it is up to the Smiths and a small band of Marines to somehow create the refuge that survivors seek in a world of darkness and terror. Now with every continent a holocaust and every ship an abattoir, life is lived under a graveyard sky.
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent Zombie Apocalypse Tale
Would you listen to Under a Graveyard Sky again? Why?
I've listened to Under a Graveyard Sky 4 times since downloading it. It is an excellent story about a rather unusual family and how they first avoid, then combat the spreading plague that turns intelligent human beings into raving animals
What other book might you compare Under a Graveyard Sky to and why?
I find similarities in this book to many other John Ringo books. Faith is somewhat similar to Cally from his Legacy of the Aldenata series, while her father is similar to all the best parts of both Iron Mike from the Aldenata series and Mike Harmon from the Paladin of Shadows series, both of whom are willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish the mission. As for the story itself, I haven't read any other apocalypse books, which are the only ones I can think of to compare this to.
Which character as performed by Tristan Morris was your favorite?
I think my favorite of Morris' characters is Steven Smith, that Australian-born naturalized-American citizen who is the father in this series. Morris' command of accents is amazing, and I love to hear it. He can switch from Australian to British to Irish to Russian with amazing alacrity, and is a wonder to hear!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Many parts evoked laughter, while many others brought on tears. Ringo's wit and writing are in top form in this book.
    Any additional comments?
To the military listeners: WARNING - Morris spells out the acronyms rather than pronouncing them the way you are probably used to. Be sure you are okay with hearing M-R-A-P and S-S-G before listening. If you have a problem with this, I recommend reading the book yourself.
    Great Entertainment
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Definitely worth a credit!! If you don't let yourself get wrapped up around the "details" ...
What was one of the most memorable moments of Under a Graveyard Sky?
This is not your typical "Z" story. The virus is hopefully just very imaginative fiction but the backstory detailing the delivery method, transmission vector, and official and unofficial actions leading up to the bridges coming down...was crafted very well. It built the post Z world that the Smith family is left to deal with.
Which character as performed by Tristan Morris was your favorite?
The narrator does especially good work delivering Faith's lines considering their absurdity when applied to "our" reality ....

    Gripping
This is book nine in the Frontier Saga. I have enjoyed the series so far. I like to read new authors and sometimes like with Ryk Brown, I find a winner.
The last book ended in a cliff hanger. In this book, Brown covers some of the subplots from the prior books and covers each in this book. Brown covers what is happening on the Aurora and the Celestia. At the end of the last book, Lt. Commander Jessica Nash had completed a free fall entry to Earth and now we follow her exploits. The Celestia is an unfinished ship without weapons. She has been instructed to hide and wait for instructions. The Aurora is in critical need of fuel so Captain Nathan Scott attempts to find the resistance fighters on Tanna that helped two of his men escape the Jung and get back to Aurora. He is hoping they can help him find fuel. Captain Scott also needs to come up with a plan to defeat the Jung and take back Earth. The ending of this book came upon me suddenly and left me with a cliff hanger.
Brown is turning into an excellent storyteller. The characters are growing with each book and more new ones are added and some are lost. The suspense builds continuously and the story is action packed. The jump drive continues to work and has saved them many times. The crew is now made up of people from several different worlds and they are all working together successfully.
Jeffrey Kafer does an excellent job narrating the story. Kafer is a voiceover artist and a multi-award winning audiobook narrator.
    Great Character Development
High praise for book 9 as it delivers continued character development and an interesting storyline that moves the novels in an interesting direction. Getting to know Nathan's father was a nice touch here as well.
    amazing
This season series is gripping from the very beginning another great book in the series the few slow spots just built up the story and made for a better ending can't wait to listen to the next one
    awesome
loved it very exciting story of the struggle to save humanity from alien invaders and the constant fight for survival
    The Mother of all Cliffhangers
Never did wonder where, what the word "Cliffhanger" came from--til today! Resistance not only provided nonstop drama, warfare so realistic
I could see the assets display, it delivered a solid 5 star CLIFFHANGER
Ending! There was definately something for every listener! Resistance is
the 9th volume in this series and there's not been a lead brick yet. Mr. Brown, you've raised the bar on Sci-Fi and I've enjoyed every book of it. And Mr. Kafer, you've made it come alive! In audio books, you've become another Dynamic Duo, a small select group. Hesitating to pick Resistance? Don't!

The End was just the beginning of the new world
Only six weeks have passed since a super-EMP attack devastated the United States, but already, life has changed dramatically. Most of America has become a wasteland filled with starving bands of people, mobs and gangs. Millions are dead and millions more are suffering, with no end in sight.
For Gordon, Samantha, Sebastian, Cruz, and Barone, the turmoil and chaos they dealt with in the early weeks after the attack will seem trivial in comparison to the collapse of society that plays out before their eyes. Uncertainty abounds as they all travel different paths in search of a safe place to call home. The only thing that is definite is that The Long Road will take its toll on all of them.

What disappointed you about The Long Road - A Post Apocalyptic Novel?
I don't know what they were thinking. It was like listening to a speed reader. I couldn't listen to the whole book. Can't believe I paid for this one too.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Joseph Morton?
    Toby Leonard Moore
    Too many Cliches!
I cannot understand how this book gets a good review from anybody - one bad cliche after another, poor writing, no, terrible writing. Good narration. Sentence after sentence that does not logically follow the one before it. No character development at all. The head of the the drug cartel is described as "deciding he would not be poor, and soon he became the go to guy for people to get anything they want" done - total character development. I tried to like this book because I like the genre, impossible, it is a bad book and nothing redeems it.
Not recommended, not one second of it.
    Scary!!
Its unbelievable to think how quickly our friends and neighbors would become barbarians. Let's all hope we dont have to find out.
I am glad I waited it out! Not to be disappointed!
If you could sum up The Long Road - A Post Apocalyptic Novel in three words, what would they be?
A great story leading into another story. I love this series.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narrator started off reading this book really fast. Just as I was irritated and almost put it down the problem was fixed and it became the enjoyable read just I was hoping for, as the first book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Story made me laugh and cry as I grew attached to the characters
    Any additional comments?
I couldnt wait for the next book! Was not disappointed by this book at all. I am glad that the initial issue of the narrator reading too fast was fixed. I recommend this book and the entire series!
    The top of my list
What did you love best about The Long Road - A Post Apocalyptic Novel?
For those who enjoy a vivid apocalyptic survival based journey you will not be disappointed, but CAUTION - YOU WILL EXPERIENCE A LOSS OF SLEEP.

    Loved it!
This is my second B. V Larson book. I totally didn't want it to end. I'm sold on both the author and the narrator, Mark Boyett. I'll be purchasing and listening to many more of Larson's Star Force books.
    nice short story
well a nice short story it did not contribute to the overall plot of the series.
Poor value no depth a crass exploit of true fans
Would you try another book from B.V. Larson and/or Mark Boyett?
Yes I have purchased and enjoyed all of the other Star Force Series. This very poor short story was just a way to exploit fans of the series after paying for the other 13 books I could hardly not buy this one.
Has Army of One turned you off from other books in this genre?
    Not at all
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
    Yes the narrator was fine
What character would you cut from Army of One?
    All of them
    Any additional comments?
Dear BV Larson attaching this to a great series is wrong this book should be deleted.
    Army of one
Loved the storyline. The concept is great, I could have read a whole book about him. Only complaint being it was way too short. I guess he blended into the army that was formed, but, I lost him in the process. Actually think I shall read it again and see where he plays into the other books. Or, If he does!
    Army of One
the story was just ok. The narrator is very good. I've listened to him in other audio book.

    Action packed story
This is book six of the series and it is best to read the books in order. As the story ended in book five with Aurora chasing a TaAkar warship into TaAkar space, book six has Aurora fighting deep into TaAkar space taking the war to the TaAkar. The Aurora is fully manned and equipped for the first time in the series.
The story moves at a lighting pace with lots and lots of action, suspense, great land battles and fantastic space battles. Brown continues to build his characters. Cameron, the XO, is now back on duty after spending book five in the hospital recovering from a serious battle injury. Cameron is great in command of the battle command and communication center during the battle of the TaAkar home planet. We learn more about Tag in this book as more is revealed about who he is.
Browns writing seems to improve with each book. He appears to be a promising new military sci-fi author. Brown kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the book. This series is a great get away from it all book; it is a quick, fun, entertaining read. I had the feeling that the series was ending with this book but apparently there are more books available to read in this series; cannot wait to start the next book.
Jeffrey Kafer does an excellent job narrating the book. Kafer is an award winning audiobook narrator.
The Final Showdown We've been Waiting For!!
The Aurora is finally crewed to capacity and fighting with an alliance that is taking the fight to enemy homeworld. The battle scenes here are well written and not everyone survives. Attacking an enemy homeworld is presented as no easy task and we get to enjoy a storyline that takes place on both the ground and space. A fitting and satisfying end to the conflict in the Pegasis cluster. Now on to Earth?
    better and better
I have been captivated and it just keeps getting better! can't wait to read the next book.
Another fantastic military sci-fi from Ryk Brown.
I highly recommend this and every previous member of the Frontiers Saga. I recommend this series to all of my friends and coworkers if they show even an inkling of interest in sci-fi and even to some of those that don't.
And now on to book 7. :)
    The best book yet!
So good I almost cried at the end! Alliance!!!!!!!! I was very excited and happy at the direction the story went. Some things I saw coming, but it didn't ruin my surprise but made me happy it was the case and for these characters I feel I have come to know like friends.

    Publisher's Summary:
Eons before the birth of the Roman Empire, there was a civilization dedicated to the sciences of Earth, sea, and sky. In the City of Light lived people who made dark plans to lay waste to their uncivilized neighbors using the very power of the planet itself. As the great science of their time was brought to bear on the invading hordes, hell was set loose on Earth. And the civilization of Atlantis disappeared in a suicidal storm of fire and water.
Now history threatens to repeat itself. The great weapon of the Ancients has been discovered in the South Pacific, and it is being deciphered by men of hatred who want to unleash hell on Earth once again. This time, its up to the Major Jack Collins and the Event Group - comprised of the nations most brilliant minds in the fields of science, philosophy, and the military to find the truth behind the worlds greatest unsolved myths - to end the cycle of destruction. Meanwhile, the seas rise, the earth cracks, and entire cities crumble to dust as the evil plan mapped out thousands of years before begins to take shape.

    Best Event Group yet ...!
Kept you wanting to hear the next line. I would come home and listen until I had to get up and continue on with my daily life. You know it's good when you are sorry it's over
the event group...a fun group to follow.
    Any additional comments?
The event group series is a great serial which at times requires you to suspend reality...but that is part of fiction.
    I love jack!!
I loved this story I feel like this is one of the best stories for sure!! this entire series so far. great writer, great performance!!!!
    Atlantis Rises..And instantly regrets it
    Any additional comments?
I think this has been my favorite Event Group book so far. From the depiction of how Atlantis originally fell and the world's transformation, to the battle between the Group and the Juliai Coalition ((Spelling?)) I really enjoyed the story. I only had a couple issues with the book. The big one was that, although the Characters are well written, there's no growth. All the main characters are the same as they have been since book one. Hopefully we'll see some movement on this in the later books. Aside from the few problems, I enjoyed that "The Frenchman" isn't the main obstacle for the Group. Especially with that abrupt, and ((in my opinion)) anticlimactic death of his wife, that I'm sure is going to affect his character in the future but I liked that we're not going straight into it. Having essentially the same one bad guy, even one as capable as Farboe, throughout the entire series would have been a little repetitive. Finally....That ending man...Where's book Four?
Good mix of action, intrigue & history
Good action/intrigue/history theory about what happened to Atlantis and where it's at now. Even a little romance thrown in. Something for everyone!
