    Publisher's Summary:
When a series of bombs go off in a Therian youth center, injuring members of THIRDS Team Destructive Delta and causing a rift between agents Dexter J. Daley and Sloane Brodie, peace seems unattainable. Especially when a new and frightening group, the Order of Adrasteia, appears to always be a step ahead. With panic and intolerance spreading and streets becoming littered with the Order's propaganda, hostility between Humans and Therians grows daily. Dex and Sloane, along with the rest of the team, are determined to take down the Order and restore peace, not to mention settle a personal score. But the deeper the team investigates the bombings, the more they believe there's a more sinister motive than a desire to shed blood and spread chaos.
Discovering the frightful truth behind the Order's intent forces Sloane to confront secrets from a past he thought he'd left behind for good, a past that could not only destroy him and his career, but also the reputation of the organization that made him all he is today. Now more than ever, Dex and Sloane need each other, and, along with trust, the strength of their bond will mean the difference between justice and all-out war.

    And it keeps getting better...
I loved the first book in this series, Hell & High Water, and if it is even possible, I loved this one more. Dex and Sloane are just the perfect couple, minus the baggage, secretiveness, and emotional distance. But through the course of working together and recognizing the bond that they share, the cast of characters and the thrill and mystery of journey kept this story moving faster than I would have liked. Mark Westfield's narration was again, fantastic and added so much to Charlie Cochet's words. I cannot say to much with out spoiling, but if you read the first one...the second one is a definite must read. On to the next one in the series...
    Amazing sequel!!!
In this sequel we find Sloane and Dex still trying to get that evil Issac and his anti-Therian thugs. This plays in the background while we watch the developing romances of (practically) the entire team Delta Destroyers. And it is AWESOME!
Sometimes the second book in a series can have a tough road to travel because they are stuck in the middle the relationship has started, but it is not in its dramatic finish-stage. There are only a limited number of mile-stones that can be covered. This sequel has absolutely no problems keeping things moving and keeping us on the edge of our seats.
First, Sloane has some deep, dark secrets that are keeping him from letting Dex in. When one of the psychiatrists from the early days of THIRDS is captured, Sloanes secrecy is threatened. Sloane has to decide if he wants out of the relationship now, or dig in deeper.
Second, Dex is facing his own inadequacy issues: he isnt Therian, he isnt ex-military, he isnt Gabe But he doesnt spend a lot of time dwelling on this. That just wouldnt be him. Instead, Dex continues to be hysterical and we get another drunken night out, this time with the ex! Lou is great and ends up giving Sloane pointers on how to handle Dex.
The other team members (Calvin and Hobbs, Cael and Ash) have their own stories move forward too. I am hoping to see their stories in the Couples TBA at the end of the series.
I absolutely love Charlies version of shifters.

    Another Robertson winner!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I so enjoyed the ebooks that I wanted to listen to the audible version of all of this series. Yes they are so worth reading twice! I am now caught up on the series in book ebook and audible and eagerly awaiting the next in line. Lots of action, excitement, fun characters that you get to love and a kick butt story line. Buy it now whether ebook or audible. The reader is SPOT ON.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Cut Off?
I cannot reveal any plot line!
What about Ray Chases performance did you like?
One of the best readers I've heard. I often cringe when I buy an audible book and don't know the reader. Ray Chase is spot on.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I cannot reveal any plot line!
    Any additional comments?
Don't hesitate to buy anything of Edward Robertson's. Great writing, fun stories, characters that grab you.
Excellent Series of Human Disasters on many levels
What made the experience of listening to Cut Off the most enjoyable?
Each book in the series has a great cast of characters. All through out the series, it was enjoyable to hear about characters introduced in previous chapters show up again in later books. The characters were well done and fit into the story very nicely. Cut Off wrapped up the story very well.
Who was your favorite character and why?
That is a very tough question to answer. I enjoyed the dark humor as narrated by Ray Chase. Any character with this dark humor side is ranked high on my list. Even then I still cannot pick out a favorite without back spacing over my previous choice. There were loads of bad characters, but it's funny I cannot remember their names like I remember these core characters that were all good.
Have you listened to any of Ray Chases other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, but only in between reading one of these books. I really enjoy his narration style and humor. Although I wonder if it is actually the author's humor expressed by Ray Chase. In any case, I plan to look for another book that Ray Chase has narrated.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No extreme reactions. No allergies, viruses or coughs.

2 editions. 2 narrators. 1 thrilling story. You can enjoy Wil Wheaton's narration here.
"I love working with Audible, in no small part because theyre committed to doing whats right, both for my books, and the people who listen to those books. There's a really excellent reason for Lock In to have two entirely different versions, so when it came time to make the audiobook, Audible did an ingenious thing: they asked both Wil Wheaton and Amber Benson to record entire versions of the book. As the author, Im impressed with Audibles commitment to my narrative - and Im geeking out that both Wil and Amber are reading my book. This is fantastic." (John Scalzi)
A blazingly inventive near-future thriller from the best-selling, Hugo Award-winning John Scalzi.
Not too long from today, a new, highly contagious virus makes its way across the globe. Most who get sick experience nothing worse than flu, fever, and headaches. But for the unlucky one percent - and nearly five million souls in the United States alone - the disease causes "Lock In": Victims fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus. The disease affects young, old, rich, poor, people of every color and creed. The world changes to meet the challenge.
A quarter of a century later, in a world shaped by what's now known as "Haden's syndrome", rookie FBI agent Chris Shane is paired with veteran agent Leslie Vann. The two of them are assigned what appears to be a Haden-related murder at the Watergate Hotel, with a suspect who is an "integrator" - someone who can let the locked in borrow their bodies for a time. If the Integrator was carrying a Haden client, then naming the suspect for the murder becomes that much more complicated.
But "complicated" doesn't begin to describe it. As Shane and Vann began to unravel the threads of the murder, it becomes clear that the real mystery - and the real crime - is bigger than anyone could have imagined.
BONUS AUDIO: Audible's audio edition of Lock In contains the bonus novella, Unlocked: An Oral History of Haden's Syndrome, written by John Scalzi and narrated by a full cast.
    Editorial Reviews:
Editors Select, August 2014 - I'm a huge sci-fi listener, and when I heard that John Scalzi was coming out with a new novel in August, there was no question that it was going to be my pick for the month. The premise: In the near-future, a mass contagion called Haden's Syndrome sweeps the world. 99% of those affected experience normal flu-like symptoms, but 1% of the world is left "locked in" trapped with a fully functional mind inside a non-functioning body. Technological advancements have made it possible for these people to move through the world using artificial android-like bodies but often at the sacrifice of being viewed as less than human.
Lock In takes place about twenty years after the outbreak, and focuses on Chris Shane's first day on the job as an FBI agent (Chris is one of the world's most famous victims of the disease). I've always admired Scalzi for is his ability to write compelling, multi-dimensional characters of all genders, and in this book, he does something truly novel: he never specifies a gender for Chris. As a result, we're rewarded with two great versions of this audiobook - one narrated by Wil Wheaton, and one by Amber Benson (
    Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

    Best Yet
I am a big fan of John Ringo. The first two books in the series were great and I eagerly added the third to my library when it became available. Book 3 is head and shoulders above the first books in the series. There are moments in the book that will make any red blooded American feel like cheering. It's an excellent listen.
I know that Ringo has a habit of dropping series just as they are hitting their stride and moving on to other projects, but I really hope there is more in store for this one.
    John Ringo Writes!
John Ringo is in that class of writers who are clearly devoted to the craft. While many writers are milking the reader base with shameless padding, Ringo stays true to his readers and delivers compelling sci-fi with real hard hitting action backed up by solid character development. Are the characters a little over the top? Absolutely, they're heroes and supposed to be. This series is an example of that writing, extraordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, with impossible odds and limited options, who find a way to rise above.
    Chekhov's gun store
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The story had my attention at first, there were interesting characters and the plot was very interesting. But the author kept taking me down dead ends, there was so much going on that the story got cluttered and hard to follow. Mix that with the cliche tactical broadsides that sound like they are written by a Call of Duty gamer and its really disappointing.
During the whole series he kept adding new characters without finishing the story of the last person he introduced. There are so many lose ends I started to get upset and frustrated. I had to WORK at finishing the story... Plus, the writing and editing is awful.

    Publisher's Summary:
As a newly appointed junior manager within the Laundry - the clandestine organization responsible for protecting Britain against supernatural threats - Bob Howard is expected to show some initiative to help the agency battle the forces of darkness. But shining a light on things best left in the shadows is the last thing Bob wants to do - especially when those shadows hide an occult parasite spreading a deadly virus. Traders employed by a merchant bank in London are showing signs of infection - an array of unusual symptoms such as superstrength and -speed, an uncanny talent for mind control, an extreme allergic reaction to sunlight, and an unquenchable thirst for blood. While his department is tangled up in bureaucratic red tape (and Buffy reruns), debating how to stop the rash of vampirism, Bob digs deeper into the banks history - only to uncover a bloodcurdling conspiracy between men and monsters.
    Members Reviews:
The Laundry series returns to excellent form
The last Laundry novel was a bit disappointing - eschewing much of the office politics and humor and instead telling a straight-forward story where Bob Howard, IT guy/secret occult agent, has to defeat a church of (surprise!) evil evangelicals, an obvious target. At first, The Rhesus Chart looks like it is going to be the same, as we are quickly introduced to a nest of vampire high frequency traders with an scene-chewing bad guy at the helm.
However, just as a resign myself to the cliche, the plot twists, and thickens, in interesting and unexpected ways. Plot elements that seemed clumsy and obvious turn out to be cleverly re-purposed, and the whole book, while retaining the macabre, becomes a lot more fun. Helping this is a return to the sharp humor and office politics of earlier books, with a mix of LOTS of amusing geek references along with some fairly clever lines.
And, of course, the reader is amazing.
There are only a couple downsides, one of which is that the coming of Case Nightmare Green is again not deferred (clearly many more novels are ahead!), and that the story is a little flabby in the middle, slowing down a bit more than needed before speeding towards its conclusion.
So, if you are reading the Laundry novels, this is a must-buy. If you haven't, you really should (though you could skip the last one). I am really happy the magic is back in this excellent series!
I just plain loved this book
Would you consider the audio edition of The Rhesus Chart to be better than the print version?
Gideon Emery's performance is a major component of the book and it is a bit hard to imagine the book being quite as enjoyable on paper without him.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Rhesus Chart?
The book is among the funniest of the Laundry Files series, and very well plotted. For a funny book, however, the ending is surprisingly affecting, deep, and serious. In the best possible way, I mean.
What does Gideon Emery bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Every time Mr. Emery pronounces the name "Angleton" I can't suppress a smile. He is the perfect reader for this series.
    Any additional comments?
I wouldn't recommend starting the series with this book, but it is probably my favorite so far. The comedy is refined and funny, but the ending kicks like a mule and left me in a kind of stunned silence for a good half hour.

Title: Hard Luck Hank: Screw the Galaxy
    Author: Steven Campbell

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Hank is a thug. He knows he's a thug. He has no problem with that realization. In his view the galaxy has given him a gift: a mutation that allows him to withstand great deals of physical trauma. He puts his abilities to the best use possible and that isn't by being a scientist.
Besides, the space station Belvaille doesn't need scientists. It is not, generally, a thinking person's locale. It is the remotest habitation in the entire Colmarian Confederation. There is literally no reason to be there.
    Unless you are a criminal.
Because of its location, Belvaille is populated with nothing but crooks. Every day is a series of power struggles between the crime bosses.
Hank is an intrinsic part of this community as a premier gang negotiator. Not because he is eloquent or brilliant or an expert combatant, but because if you shoot him in the face he keeps on talking.
Hank believes he has it pretty good until a beautiful and mysterious blue woman enters his life with a compelling job offer.
Hank and Belvaille, so long out of public scrutiny, suddenly find themselves the epicenter of the galaxy with a lot of very unwelcome attention.

A bunch of genres crammed into good fun
I didn't rate this five stars based on literary value. It has next to none. I rated five stars based on sheer enjoyment. This book is just plain fun! Based against a sci-fi backdrop, you'll find fantasy, noir, crime, comedy, and a light smattering of romance.
And the narrator was about as perfect as could be for the voice of Hank. But he didn't slack off on the other voices, either. Male, female, species, race, and life station: This guy represented each one independently and entertainingly.
This book will not change my life, but it did help me enjoy it a lot more.
    Fun Sci-Fi Humor
Hank lives on an unimportant space station that is located at the far end of the Colmarian Empire, a confederation of planets that no one else wants. Hank is a level four mutant that is bulletproof (but it still stings) and earns his living by doing odd jobs for the Bosses who run the space station. Most of the time, Hank does not seem very smart, but has flashes of brilliance during a crisis. The book moves quickly from one ridiculous situation to the next and is full of over the top action sequences.
As a member of the science fiction humor genre, the book is for enjoyment and listeners should not expect life altering messages. My rating is based on the books entertainment value, but I was disappointed that the second half of the book is rushed and ends abruptly.
A new favourite author of mine.
What made the experience of listening to Hard Luck Hank the most enjoyable?
My favourite thing about Screw the Galaxy is the believability of the dialogue. I want a story that takes me away and puts me in another galaxy. I don't want space poetry, just an awesome kickass story that makes me feel good. Screw the Galaxy did just that and I found my self laughing out loud everyday.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Hard Luck Hank?
I really can't decide. The book has such a smooth progression with multiple climaxes.
Which character as performed by Liam Owen was your favorite?
"Haaank... duuuh..." - Liam's performance of Hank is stellar. He sounds EXACTLY how his character is described, and matches the dialogue effortlessly (or so he makes it sound that way at least.).

    Publisher's Summary:
Famine, Death, War, and Pestilence - the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the harbingers of Armageddon - these are our guides through the Wastelands.
From the Book of Revelation to The Road Warrior, from A Canticle for Leibowitz to The Road, storytellers have long imagined the end of the world, weaving eschatological tales of catastrophe, chaos, and calamity. In doing so, these visionary authors have addressed one of the most challenging and enduring themes of imaginative fiction: The nature of life in the aftermath of total societal collapse.
Gathering together the best post-apocalyptic literature of the last two decades from many of today's most renowned authors of speculative fiction - including George R. R. Martin, Gene Wolfe, Orson Scott Card, Carol Emshwiller, Jonathan Lethem, Octavia E. Butler, and Stephen King - Wastelands explores the scientific, psychological, and philosophical questions of what it means to remain human in the wake of Armageddon. Whether the end of the world comes through nuclear war, ecological disaster, or cosmological cataclysm, these are tales of survivors, in some cases struggling to rebuild the society that was, in others, merely surviving, scrounging for food in depopulated ruins and defending themselves against monsters, mutants, and marauders.
Wastelands delves into this bleak landscape, uncovering the raw human emotion and heart-pounding thrills at the genre's core.

    Collections are hit and miss.
The book had some real awesome shorts and some real duds. I was torn on rating. overall it was so up and down I couldn't hate it nor love it. Narration was also all over. I would say don't waste a copy edit and if you can buy for less than a 5 spot.
IF IT GLOWS, DON'T PICK IT UP
(LAS VEGAS) IT'S SO CLOSE TO HELL YOU, CAN SEE SPARKS (SPARKS, NEVADA)
I got this because I love the subject matter and Adams is my favorite editor and collector of short stories. If you find THE LIVING DEAD, pick it up, it has some great stories in it. This book is also not originals, but a sort of best of, according to Adams.
THE END OF THE WHOLE MESS
I was very disappointed in this collection. There were way more losers in this collection than most and I felt the book was a wasted credit and I am usually pretty forgiving when it comes to anthologies. The following authors had good stories: Stephen King, Paolo Bacigalup, George RR Martin and Neal Barrett Jr. There were a couple that were okay, but not many. Usually, if I have four or five good stories in a collection, I am happy, but that is if the rest are not awful. The number of stories, that were boring, were so many, that it over rode the good. I will not get the sequel.
Certainly more good than bad here.
Would you listen to Wastelands again? Why?
Yes. There are certain stories I would listen to again.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I loved the characters in the story about a virus that takes away everyone's ability to speak. Very creative.
Have you listened to any of the narratorss other performances before? How does this one compare?
Not that I know of, but there was only one narrator I didn't care for.

    I'm Still Listening
This apocolyptic/sci-fi series is original enough that it has kept my attention and maintained my interest enough that I will be going on to episode 3. Characters are beginning to develop at a better pace. There is mystery, and some suspense.
Narration is very good with one exception. We have a Scott Brick "talk-alike" in this series. Scott Brick can make me feel like I'm riding the crazy train if I hear too much of him. Both the character and the Brickish narration of this character are a little over-the-top. Fortunately, their performance time is limited so far.
    And I'm still listening.
    The Stand meets Twilight Zone
If you could sum up Yesterday's Gone: Season 1 - Episode 2 in three words, what would they be?
    intense, intriguing, addictive
What was one of the most memorable moments of Yesterday's Gone: Season 1 - Episode 2?
not the character since he's a creep, but the reader of the serial killer is a highlight of the series so far. I really enjoy his sections!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I want each section to be longer, its a bummer when an episode is over and I don't have the next one handy.
    Any additional comments?
looking forward to the next episodes of season 1. I could see this being a tv series. i'll probably get the rest of season one then decide if I want to continue on. if it gets too far fetched with creatures then I probably wont, I like the eerie and suspense parts and the great characters but not a lot of actual monster stuff, that's gets a little over the top and cliché to me.
    Very, very good book.
I purchased the whole season 1 series and will probably get season 2 soon. I definitely enjoyed this book.
    No GLUE
No Glue holding the storylines together. I realize we're being introduced to the characters - but....
ok.. I am thoroughly enjoying these.
season 1 episode 1 was free for me. I liked it so much I bought episode 2... It was totally worth it.

    Publisher's Summary:
Famine. Death. War. Pestilence. These are the harbingers of the biblical apocalypse, of the End of the World. In science fiction, the end is triggered by less figurative means: nuclear holocaust, biological warfare/pandemic, ecological disaster, or cosmological cataclysm.
But before any catastrophe, there are people who see it coming. During, there are heroes who fight against it. And after, there are the survivors who persevere and try to rebuild. THE APOCALYPSE TRIPTYCH will tell their stories.
Edited by acclaimed anthologist John Joseph Adams and bestselling author Hugh Howey, THE APOCALYPSE TRIPTYCH is a series of three anthologies of apocalyptic fiction. THE END IS NIGH focuses on life before the apocalypse. THE END IS NOW turns its attention to life during the apocalypse. And THE END HAS COME focuses on life after the apocalypse.
Post-apocalyptic fiction is about worlds that have already burned. Apocalyptic fiction is about worlds that are burning. THE END IS NIGH is about the match.

    THE REIGNING KING OF ANTHOLOGY
    WE'RE NOT DEAD YET
Adams is my favorite editor. He has a good sense of what I like, better than any other editor. I will admit there are a lot of losers in this for me. If you are not capable of skipping stories you know early on, your not going to like than stay away from this, or most anthologies. There were seven stories I liked a lot. Mathew Mathers had the best story in my opinion. There were also good entries from David Wellington, Hugh Howey, Ben H. Winters, Jack McDevit and Robin Wasserman. Four of the stories were okay and six stories that I skipped after figuring out early they were not for me. Some of the stories did not get me excited, but got me excited for the next entry in the series. Scott Sigler's story was okay, but sounds like it will get a lot better.
P.S. I know those of us who like anthologies are few, but I do hope that audible brings back the Science Fiction/Anthology category and that they keep it up to date this time. It would be so nice to be able to go to one place to find the anthologies I am interested in.
    Amazing, couldn't put it down!
Where does The End is Nigh rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This is one of my favorite audio books, and I have listened to quite a few.

Those are the backs of gods we see.

New world, not as compelling as Wool
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It's value neutral, no time lost and a little bit of a gain.
What was most disappointing about Hugh Howeys story?
Sand doesn't stand up to Howie's first series of books (Wool, Shift, Dust). The world building and character development are lacking compared to the riveting Silo world of Wool, which was enjoyable and addictive. You cared about the characters in Wool even if the lines between good folks and bad eggs were a bit simplistic. In this book, more of the same of that but without the same general development and attention to detail. The people and the world of Sand just exist (despite all the action) and are not as compelling.
    Slight spoiler as example:
The glaring treatment of Mom as Dystopian prostitute is just hammered home (no pun intended) every time the character was in the scene or beyond. Her children, near and far, do not have an interaction with a friend or stranger without their mom's (survive or perish) profession being thrown in their face as a slut-shaming joke. I mean it, every time. It's lazy, clumsy, and somewhat awkward until it becomes distractingly annoying.
    /End spoiler.
While I've never found Howey to be sophisticated in his handling of adult relationships or sex in general, I thought he was better than this.
What does Karen Chilton bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She did a great job. Howey writes straightforwardly and without flourish (or variety) and Chilton bought the story to life and made it what I think would be a better listen than read. I did listen at 1.25 narration speed but it was not due to the narrator (it worked well at both speeds) but the writing.
Could you see Sand: Omnibus Edition being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
I kept thinking of Kevin Costner in Postman and Water World even though the only middle-aged man who is a 'would be' a main character is but a distant memory to the family in Sand. This not a good sign. I'd much rather see Wool as a mini-series!
    Any additional comments?
I'm on the fence about the rest of series, even though the story picked up at the end with some of the most thoughtful writing and the only real moments of intrigue in the book. Like the best of Howey's characters though, I do have hope...
    Ugh. Hugh, what happened?
What would have made Sand: Omnibus Edition better?
I am normally a big Hugh Howey fan, but what the hay? This was a very interesting story line (as usual) but it felt fragmented and disjointed. I really could have cared less what happened to the main characters. Although Karen Chilton is a fine actress, there were just too many mispronunciations (three when I quit counting) for me to get past. These were not terms or character portrayals, just things a director or audio editor should have caught.
