    Interesting and Different
Where does Freedom's Challenge rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I particularly like Anne McCaffrey books and this is as good as her Pern series. I think she could have gone on and added to this series.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Freedom's Challenge?
    None in particular
What does Susie Breck and Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    Probably nothing special
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    N?A
    Still a great Author
I enjoy Anne McCaffrey and having the books available on audio enhances the experience, though I do tend to go for books I have read before. The Freedom is among my favorites. I did prefer Susie Breck alone or combined with Dick Hill to Dick Hill alone.
A Great Third Installment and Great Readers
The tape to CD conversion is a little worn, but this is a really good story.
    Another winner!
Always good, but still have issues with the male speaker. As previously stated in another review, he is too laconic, and not enough difference between personae. The woman nailed it. Various dialects, etc were spot on. Excellent story.
    I love this series!
Would you listen to Freedom's Challenge again? Why?
I would and will listen to this book again. I really enjoyed the story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I liked the team of characters in the first landing.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listen to books at work and enjoyed it for a couple days.
    Any additional comments?
I enjoy stories of people who overcome odds and fight for their freedom and prosper. I enjoyed this story.

He has enslaved civilians, built an army, and spread his forces from Portland through most of western Washington State. Now he wants the Willamette Valley farmland, and he's willing to wage war to conquer it.
Unknown to both factions, however, is the imminent arrival of a ship from Tasmania bearing British soldiers.

    Not bad, but not great
If you liked the first book in the series then you will most likely enjoy this second book. If you felt it was so-so then perhaps you might want to skip this series and move to something else; I found it took some determination to get through parts of this book.
One of my pet peeves in any story is repetion of descriptive words, especially when there is a large supply of other words or phrases that could be used. In the first book it seemed every arrow fired and swipe of a sword resulted in "cloven air" or "this cum that" (bookstore cum coffee shop etc.) to explain dual purpose places or things. Thankfully he used a few different ways to describe things here and there.
A great deal of story time has passed between the first book and this one and I wondered if I had picked the third book and not the second, but this is indeed the second. The gap made me wonder what had happened in the story years between. It is as if this book is just a highlight worth noting in the lives of the characters. It isn't a bad thing because listening to day to day and uneventful routines would be quite dull.
At a few points in the story it was hard to determine where or when events were taking place; there was a lengthy flashback (yes flashbacks can be tricky I know) that left me wondering what I had missed is just one example.
The narrator is apparently quite accomplished and that fact leaves me wondering why he tends to repeatedly mispronounce words or if the author has spelled the words this way in the text (teeth bared in great effort pronounced as barred). Either way it the same as fingernails on a chalkbaord.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Oversoul has done its job well. There is no war on Harmony. There are no weapons of mass destruction. There is no technology that could lead to weapons of war. By control of the data banks, and subtle interference in the very thoughts of the people, the artificial intelligence has fulfilled its mission.
But now there is a problem. In orbit, the Oversoul realizes that it has lost access to some of its memory banks, and some of its power systems are failing. And on the planet, men are beginning to think about power, wealth, and conquest.
    Critic Reviews:
"I'm hooked....A thoroughly enjoyable piece of storytelling. What the heck - bring on number two." (Chicago Tribune)
"Card is a master storyteller, and The Memory of Earth is eminently readable." (The Seattle Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Better than I remember it
I read this book (and indeed this entire series) about 7 years ago - its been a pleasure to revisit the world of harmony. The reader narrates the book very well, giving each of the characters both a fitting and distinguishable voice during dialogue. In narrative, the reader is clear and easy to understand allowing the listener to drift into the world.
    Interesting Premise
I have read a lot of OSC -- all of the Ender series (both of tracks) as well as the first Alvin Maker. This volume is not as good as Ender (any of them), but few Sci-Fi books are in my estimation. Like Alvin Maker, it leaves you hanging at the end, needing to know what happens next. I will say it ends at a natural break, while Alvin Maker stops way too soon.
The Memory of Earth offers an interesting take on humanity's seemingly inevitable quest to destroy itself. OSC is a master of strategy and I think this book also shows that mind at work. I am looking forward to Vol. II to see if the Oversoul's plan works out.
    Entertaining approach to SciFi
I like the characters, brotherly rivalry. Some family interactions could be a little more realistic. The long view of the world of Harmony was interesting and I can't wait for more. I hope Card gets into the morality of the Over Soul more than he seemed to in this book.
The Narrator was fantastic. He is always great and gets out of the way so you can enjoy the story. I don't think I once thought about the narration. Was too involved.
Where is The Coat of Many Colors?
    THE CONCEPT OF UNTHINKABLE CONCEPTS
I must hurry and type this before the Oversoul causes me to forget. The Oversoul controls the minds of people in order to keep the peace and stop war. These are not the drones you are looking for. I read this book 30 years ago. I remembered it as a book I loved. The Oversoul made me forget the boring wordy dialogue that started to infiltrate Card's writing in the 90's. The stretching out of a story in order to be able to write sequels.
WE DON'T GET TO CHOSE OUR BROTHERS.
Card takes the story of Moses and Joseph and combines them to make this story. We have brothers who hate each other, a common theme in Card books. Another ploy that Card started using around this time, the main character questions every move and decision everyone makes. The main character has no sense of humor again.

"The latest Miles Vorkosigan adventure has him campaigning in four plots....Bujold weaves all four actions into a seamless whole that her faithful readers may rank among the best books in an outstanding series." (Booklist)

Comedy and a Romp with Characters You Love
After a serious turn over the last few books of the series (Memory, Komarr), this book returns to the lighter fare and faster pace of some of the earlier novels of the series. Built like a Restoration comedy crossed with a modern sitcom, it features spurned lovers, switched genders, slapstick, and politics done with Bujold's deft touch. Expect less brooding and more action, although it is all political and romantic this time - no gunfights or spacebattles in this adventure.
If you have followed the Miles series from the beginning this is an hugely entertaining novel, and it goes by incredibly fast. If you haven't read the previous series in order: the Vor Game, Cetaganda, Brothers in Arms, Mirror Dance, Memory, and Komarr (or at least Mirror Dance, Memory, and Komarr), you might want to start the series from an earlier point, as I imagine that the evolution in the characters that creates much of the comedy will be entirely lost.
    Bujold does Jane Austen--nicely
The dinner party alone is worth reading the whole book. Vorkosigan helpless and inept in the throes of passion. All the wit and plotting brilliance we have come to expect of Bujold but this time in the service of comedy of manners. Bravo! And, as a bonus, an homage to tribbles.
    Space Opera
Grover Gardner's narration makes this story. I find myself looking at short men in a different way. I read and enjoyed the entire series years ago, but Grover makes the characters come alive. It is easy to listen A Civil Campaign and the other Vorkosigian audiobooks more than once. They are fun and addictive. For the richest experience, start at the beginning of the saga with A Warriors Apprentice.
A Civil Campaign is just as great as the first book. Just don't listen to this audiobook in the dentist chair, you might get hurt when you laugh.
    My favorite Bujold book
This is my favorite Lois McMaster Bujold book. It's incredibly rich in characters and situations. It's not as much an action book as some of her previous in the series but it's the richest, I think, in drama and humor.
I think this could be a first read book in the series with great enjoyment.

    Nice introdution to Author
This was the first book I have listened to by this author and I was pleasently surprised. I knew she was an award winning author but was a little afraid to read any of her stuff thinking it is more in the fantasy genre. I do love a good space opera and this was a excellent one I loved the characters and the wit that the lead character has. I also like the reader who I have listened to on other books he brings just the right cadence to his read. I highly recommend this book and hope more of this seris is put out for us to listen to.
    Finally!
Finally some of her Miles series is making it onto audio books. I read this entire series and I loved it. The Vor Game is a great example of the series and is a great moving book about honour and commitments. I recomend any of her books in this series, I have never been disappointed by any of them. Her characters fly from the pages, real and complete, pulling you along through the story as you want to see if Miles manages to succeed, or not. You never quite know for sure what the outcome will be, since he doesn't always get everything he hoped for.
    Great author, great book!
Lois McMaster Bujold is a great author and this book, like all those in the Vorkosigan series, is packed with wonderful characterizations and snappy writing - very readable/listenable and lots of fun. However, this book is several books into the series, so if you are not familiar with the character and backgrounds you might have tough time figuring out how you got here. Unfortunately this is currently the only Vorkosigan book Audible carries, so I suggest you hit the library or bookstore and pick up the first books in the series before listening. Start with 'Cordelia's Honor' and then 'Young Miles' and you'll be up to speed (and hooked!).
    another great book, great narrator
I'm having a great time with the Miles Vorkosigan books...I must be, I'm gonna end up spending my yearly audio budget on 'em. Plots are pretty involved but not tough to follow, she sprinkles humor all through them, characters likable & believable. The narrator is excellent; pleasant voice, good pacing, just understated enough that he doesn't detract from the book, animated enough that he helps it come alive.

    Action Packed
Well developed and balanced characters. A good look into the Alien and Predator universe. A must read.
    The alien/human/predator war continues
The 2nd installment of the rage war continues to develop the various relationships between the allies as well as reveals more of the rage and their methods, and purpose. The story is well written and the tale has a lot of depth. I have a four on the story only because of the fact that if you have read the other alien and predator books that have been printed before you will see a very large difference in the level of action as well as the variance in strength and skill of the various species between this series and the other stories.
More like those old school dark horse novels
Great continuation! It's great when books are willing to kill off characters right when you think they are okay.
    wrong narrator hired. ..
narrator's voice portrayed strong male characters with an effeminate taint. ..this was annoying and distracting
great sci fi and expansion on alien series
the actor does an excellent job. story is great. i liked it better than the recent movies.

Book two in the Black Tide Rising series from the New York Times best-selling author
A family of survivors fights back against a zombie plague that has brought down civilization.
    A world cloaked in darkness
With human civilization annihilated by a biological zombie plague, a ragtag fleet of yachts and freighters known as Wolf Squadron scours the Atlantic, searching for survivors. Within every abandoned liner and carrier lurks a potential horde, safety can never be taken for granted, and death and turning into one of the enemy is only a moment away.
    The candle flickers
Yet every ship and town holds the flickering hope of survivors. One and two from lifeboats, a dozen from a fishing village, a few hundred wrenched by fury and fire from a ship that once housed thousands....
    Light a flame
Now Wolf Squadron must take on another massive challenge: clear the assault carrier USS Iwo Jima of infected before the trapped Marines and sailors succumb to starvation. If Wolf Squadron can accomplish that task, an even tougher trial awaits: an apocalyptic battle to win a new dawn for humanity. The war for civilization begins as the boats of the Wolf Squadron become a beacon of hope on a Darkling Sea.

    Wonderful Post-ZA Story
If you could sum up To Sail a Darkling Sea in three words, what would they be?
This is extremely difficult for me as there is so much in this book that cannot fit in only three words. If forced, however, I would go for alliteration:
Fun, Fighting, Family (or even without the commas)
What other book might you compare To Sail a Darkling Sea to and why?
As with the first book in this series, To Sail a Darkling Sea is my only experience with Zombie Apocalypse books. Characters remind me of other memorable characters from many of John Ringo's other series, but the books are unlike anything I've read before.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I think my favorite scene in this book was when Faith is explaining to her commanding officers why she went dress shopping in the middle of an operation. Most of her superiors are male, so they have to contact the very top brass, who is female for both a more experienced and female opinion. Yves St Laurent dresses are, after all, masterpieces. Even men will appreciate the interaction between these two females in a male-dominated chain of command.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book had many more laughing moments than the first of this series. The awards ceremony and the Pass in Review, however, both evoked tears.
    Any additional comments?
WARNING for Military listeners: Morris spells out acronyms rather than pronouncing them. If you hate with people spell R-O-W-P-U, this is not the listen for you.
However, Morris IS an excellent voice actor and his performance, especially with the many accented characters in this book, is AMAZING!
    Good series so far!
My only issue, being former military and having worked in aviation, is the narrator doesn't know military lingo. Often referred to helicopters as "hellos" instead of "he-lows" is something that triggers my ocd. Otherwise, a great series so far. I'm already heading into the next...
Mind candy for the ZAMMIE age.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. This book (and this series) is excellent, shut your mind off and just enjoy the ride fun.

    fantastic story, narration and production!
so glad 40k novels have come to audible! this is a cracking good tale in the vein of eisenhorn or ravenor
In a universe far far away it is the dark ages.
Resurrection: The Hourusian Wars - War Hammer 40,000
    by John French
    WHAT IT IS:
A long time ago in a universe far far away it is the dark ages.
This is Star Wars but envisioned by Clive Barker, with detailed notes from H.P. Lovecraft and ROCKIN' to HEAVY-METAL.
Mankind's empire stretches across the universe. Humans travel great distances by sailing star-ships through "warp space". Manned by psychics who can guide ships through the warp.
    THE UNSPOKEN TRUTH IS:
Unfortunately, "the Warp" is not just the empty space between stars. It's another dimension. The big unspoken truth of this universe is the Warp might be hell. It's full of screaming ghosts. Human and alien dead. Some have evolved into vastly powerful demonic beings & monstrous gods. Unfortunately, by the time man-kind figures this out, it's too late. Mankind's empire is as wide as the universe, and to travel anywhere you HAVE too use the WARP.
These War Hammer 40k books are tales of the battle to save the human race. The battle has been waging for many thousands of years and is not going well.
Like in the DARK AGES, man-kind has lost much knowledge.
    Superstition rules.
Science has devolved into a religion where tech-priests prey to machine-spirits.
Gigantic, ancient battle-ships travel through the void. Many of their gothic-cathedral interiors are now dark and vacant as humanity's numbers decrease.
A DARK universe so lavish in gothic-scary detail it teeters your mind on the edge of insanity.
Mutant-monsters from the WARP threaten the human mind and soul in an epic war with no end.
Yep, an' it's not going well. How do you defeat the armies of the HELL-dimension? ...in outer-space?
What can save this very VERY V E R Y dark vision of the future and make it an enjoyable read??
Wonderfully imaginative Characters, and military sects, and religions, and weird science, and scary MONSTERS - each more fantastic than the last. Genius!
    WHO WILL SAVE US:
A "Rag-tag bunch of misfits" stand against the EVIL from the WARP.
They're awkward but extremely advanced in the skills of battle.
They remind me of "Buckeroo-Banzai and his Hong Kong Cavaliers"
    They are

    Publisher's Summary:
    Defeat was not an option.
    The war wasn't going well.
The mind-numbingly alien Arachnids were an enemy whose like no civilized race had ever confronted. Like some carnivorous cancer, the "Bugs" had overrun planet after planet...and they regarded any competing sentient species as only one more protein source. They couldn't be reasoned with, or even talked to, because no one had the least idea of how to communicate with a telepathic species with no recognizable language...and whose response to any communication attempt was a missile salvo. No one knew how large their civilization - if it could be called a civilization - actually was or how it was organized, but the huge fleets they threw against their opponents suggested that it was enormous.
The Grand Alliance of Humans, Orions, Ophiuchi, and Gorm, united in desperate self-defense, have been driven to the wall. Billions of their civilians have been slaughtered. Their most powerful offensive operation has ended in shattering defeat and the deaths of their most experienced and revered military commanders. The edge in technology with which they began the war is eroding out from under them, and whatever they do, the Bugs just keep coming.
But the warriors of the Grand Alliance know what stands behind them, and they will surrender no more civilians to the oncoming juggernaut. They will die first...and they will also reactivate General Directive 18, however horrible it may be. Because when the only possible outcome is victory or racial extermination, only one option is acceptable.
    The Shiva Option.

    The Shiva option
A great end to a military sci-fi book. The interplay between the different characters between the different scenes means everything to the book. Worth a second read.
I think a chat bot or writing program made it.
Really the story reads out as if a writing program is the true author.
The book just slowly grinds on & on with bland charter's and a storyline that is all about word volume. It's like you won a ticket to the all you can eat Buffet , but the buffet is actually nothing but chicken gravy sawdust made 8 different ways but it's still just grease and sawdust that fills your gut as your body is starved to death by lack of any real food. I'm asking for a refund!
Outstanding performance. The story was "meh".
I would listen to anything narrated by Mark Vietor based on his performance in the series. However, story itsself by David Weber and Stephen White was kind of linear and 2 dimensional. I would have liked to see more character development. It seems like they tried, but just couldn't deliver. I think I am spoiled, because Webber does so much better in his later works.
Always a good read from David Weber.
Science Fiction with a traditional flavor. This appears to be in the same universe as the Honor Harrington series, but at an earlier time. So far I haven't had a poor story from this author.
they blew up a lot of stuff
Narrator was ok, the character development was shallow. I guess I was spoiled with the Honor Harrington Series and expected the usual character development and political intrigue. I didn't want a rewrite of the any other series but I did expect better. They focused on the battles and not the people who were fighting those battles.
