Better than a booger strewn postcard.

If you ever swung a shovel or a Pulaski on a fire line, you will enjoy this book (if you suspend a little belief here and there). If you are some kind of firefighter groupie you will probably love this book. If you have no interest at all in the subject... you will gain a better understanding of how life as a seasonal firefighter rolls.

It's relatively well-written; the story moves along without any overly distracting side-plots or details.

As a former wildland firefighter, some of the stories I recognized immediately (the wild hijinks, the inter-crew rivalries, the snoring ox, the waiting-to-be-discovered semipro snowboarder, the ex military adrenaline junky) - and those were my favorites. Other stories were a little too contrived - I could see them happening; but not all to the same person (or even the same crew) and not all in the same season.

But if you have a Boston to Seattle flight in the near future, it is a pretty good way to spend your time.

Interesting and a fast read

I found it interesting because I had training for mountain fire fighting in the military (but not close to this level). I was also the only female in deployments--yet managed not to sleep with my co-workers. I liked the story and the characters. I had an issue with some of the descriptions. I'm still trying to figure out "the angry confidence of a military man." Did the author mean Tan was angrily confident and had military bearing? The phrase is insulting to military personnel and is without purpose. I liked that Lowery used slang, but she should've used the word "tequila" before referring to it just as cactus juice. I thought they were drinking nopal juice at first. Perhaps slang has changed, but twice she referred to a man as being built like a "brick sh*thouse," which to me (and those I surveyed) means a curvy, busty woman. Most of the ending was predictable, but with some minor surprises. The ending was still satisfactory. I would recommend the book to friends.

Wonderful story,

This story is told on multiple layers of human drama cultural struggles, and family dynamics. Masterfully written to capture the danger and politics of the firefighters world.

Hope she keeps writing

Don't remember much about the story. Didn't finish the book. I was interested in becoming a 'smoke jumper" back in the days when the advertising stated: "Females need NOT apply, and my female relatives said: "You can marry a 'smoke jumper'.

a real vision of the future

Sarah Schulman of course is a prophetess of our times, and this funny vision of the future is also haunting. Learn some lessons from this book.

A Clever Gem: Read this book!

"The Mere Future" is a fascinating book that has achieved the brevity and flow of a novella without sacrificing any complexity or realism. It has always been an impossible endeavor for a blurb to avoid giving short shrift to such a masterful creation, so be advised, it's about more than just a dystopic society. The richness of the book stems from Sarah Schulman's innate cleverness and talent at transforming the mundane into effortless imagery and engaging dialogue. You'll need a sharp eye and urbanized sense of humor to fully grasp the witticisms that Schulman appears to spin with the ease of a weaver at her loom on autopilot.

This is the first of Schulman's art that I have enjoyed and it will not be the last. Her writing mesmerized me; as I investigated the author I was left bewildered at how such an incredible writer, perceptive citizen and thinker could exist in relative obscurity (except for a seemingly intense and loyal niche following). Let's face it: most people wear Banal as a perfume and much of what is produced and consumed in American art is trivial, mediocre and entirely inconsequential. Schulman's book did more than entertain, forecast and ruminate - her denouement wasn't entirely tragic, as her writing serves to reinvigorate the literary scene for posterity.

Unabashedly, 5 stars! (This is the first review I have ever bothered to plink out, for a restaurant, product, or tome.)

waste of time and money

Most of time when I write a review I just say wheather it is good or not,

I dont think I will purchase any more danielle steel books these books

are so predictable and boring.I have read all her books with no exception

and they are all the same.While I do like happy endings in books I would

also like some unexpected surprises to keep me interested,I heard once

that she writes 4 or 5 books at once maybe this is the problem

It is interesting how someone can be in a routine with their life and then things change and its how you cope with the changes that makes life interesting. When Blaize and Salima are comforted with change they resist it at first and then they start to enjoy the change.Then change happens again, this time it is not good because the teacher wants to try and work things out with a former girlfriend. There are a few chapters in the middle of the book, I just wanted to skip. In fact I read the end of the book to see how it would work out and then I went back to the middle of the book to see how the story would unfold.

Hacía tiempo que no me enganchaba tanto un libro. Lo compré después de escuchar la entrevista al autor en "el ojo crítico", de radio nacional, y fué un acierto, ya el argumento prometía, pero el libro superó mis expectativas. Muy, pero muy recomendable. Lástima que todo lo bueno se acaba.
