Length: 12 hrs and 16 mins

    Publisher's Summary:
It's November 1939, another war in Europe. And Bernie Cooper is wondering what's ahead for her. She knows Gordon Brock is going to ask her to marry him any second now. An honest country boy about to graduate from university as a geologist, he's a good catch by anyone's standards, too. And she's going to say no. The harsh realities of this Second World War have other plans for Bernie, though, and once her adored father is commissioned to serve again, she accepts Gordon's proposal - mostly to please her dad. In any event, with Gordon off to New Guinea for the job of a lifetime, she'll be glad of a temporary reprieve from walking down the aisle, won't she?
As Gordon braces for the inevitable Japanese invasion of Rabaul, Bernie finds herself in the midst of the battle being fought on home soil against the worst drought in living memory, against the menace of an unseen enemy, and against the unspeakable torment of not knowing if those dear to her are alive or dead. From the beaches of Sydney to the dusty heart of the continent, This Red Earth is as much a love letter to the country, with all its beauty and its terror, as it is an intimate portrait of love itself. Above all, this is a story of the greatest power we each possess hope.

    great storytelling
I love the characterisation and the way Kelly transfers how she feels about the land into her stories.
A story as rich in history as the cover is in colour.
This Red Earth is a wonderful story about two people in wartime Australia, and while the author says it is fiction, the research and factual content makes this both entertaining and educational. What a very long way we have come in terms of our communications. Young people who have grown up with mobile phones etc should read this story so they can appreciate the difficulties experienced in communicating across this vast and wonderful country. I have such an appreciation for the CWA and other women/associations who worked as their men went o/s.

    Devastatingly real
This book tackles the unappetising subject of the loss of a lover and manages to infuse it with such dignity and humour that it is as hard to put down as any action fuelled blockbuster. The main character, the grieving Pen, is portrayed so vividly that I found myself really living her loss alongside her. Truly a beautiful book.

    Title: The Son
    Author: Michel Rostain
    Narrator: Stefan Booth
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-23-13
    Publisher: Headline Digital
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
This is not a book about death. It's a book about life. We first meet Michel 11 days after the death of his son Lion.
Lion was lost, suddenly, to a virulent strain of meningitis and it's left his father and entire family reeling. We join Michel on his personal journey through grief, but the twist that makes the journey truly remarkable, and tips this true story into fiction, is the fact that we see it all through Lion's eyes.
In a stunningly original blurring of memoir and fiction, The Son tackles the very hardest of subjects in the most readable of ways. Michel Rostain resolutely ducks away from sentimentality and pathos, and tells his story instead with wit, wisdom, and vitality. For this is not a book about death; it's a book about life.
Winner of the 2011 Goncourt First Novel Award, France's best-known and most prestigious literary prize.

    The Son
I found the book both confronting and uplifting. The visceral sadness caused by the loss of a child was communicated in a way which transmitted the pain to the reader. However it ended by reminding the reader that this too could be borne and eventually whilst the pain never passes you learn to live with it.

    Critic Reviews:
"One of the most brilliant novelists around" (Independent)
"The Midwife's Daughter is warm and wise, heart- breakingly sad and yet somehow uplifting too. I've been a big fan of Patricia Ferguson for many years - and I think this is her finest novel yet" (Jacqueline Wilson)
"She is precisely the kind of writer whose novels you'd expect to find advertised on tube billboards and selling in the hundred thousands - plotty, emollient, fluent, concerned with relationships and what fosters or thwarts them, and capable of making you root for the characters" (Guardian)
    Members Reviews:
    Dissapointing
I was recommended this book by our book group. I thought the story was weak and the book over long. The characters were unbelievable and Grace's story rather naive. A lot more could have been made of it.
The narration for the book was good if a little comical at times.

    Publisher's Summary:
Hidden Gods: The Doorway is a metaphysical thriller in which two journalists, in an attempt to discover who or what is really behind the chaos in the Middle East, spin back through time to discover the secret codes of Atlantis. Their search for the grail begins with a night in the King's Chamber of the Great Pyramid of Giza...
International news photographer Hugo Fitzroy, his schizophrenic son Brent and writer Phillipa Neville, have one vision in common - a great pyramid through whose portal shines a giant sunbeam. Inside, a miraculous escape is planned. Outside, planet earth is changing frequency.
Against a background of the international intrigue surrounding the Gulf War and its aftermath, the visionary trio not only discover that they are being drawn inexorably towards the greatest secret the Middle East has ever kept, but also towards their own destinies. For Hugo, Brent and Phillipa have loved before, in other powerful identities, and now they have come to terms with this as well as their responsibilities to the hidden gods.
Anthony Masters is the author of eleven works of adult fiction - notably, Conquering Heroes (1969), Red Ice (1986, with Nicholas Barker), The Men (1997), The Good and Faithful Servant (1999) and Lifers (2001) - and, prior to his death, was in the process of completing another, Dark Bridges, which he thought would be his best.
Many of these works carry deep insights into social problems that he gained, over four decades, by helping the socially excluded, be it by running soup kitchens for drug addicts or by campaigning for the civic rights of gypsies and other ethnic minorities. Masters is also known for his eclectic range of non-fiction titles. It ranged from the biographies of such diverse personalities as Hannah Senesh (The Summer that Bled, 1972), Mikhail Bakunin (Bakunin: the Father of Anarchism, 1974), Nancy Astor (Nancy Astor: A Life, 1981) and the British secret service chief immortalized by Ian Fleming in his James Bond books (The Man Who Was M: the Life of Maxwell Knight, 1984), to a history of the notorious asylum Bedlam (Bedlam, 1977).

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
O'Flaherty (1896-1984), a young founder of the Irish Communist Party, was a member of the later generation of Irish renaissance writers. By his own admission he set out for Moscow on April 23, 1930, to collect material for a book on Bolshevism "to join the great horde of scoundrels, duffers and liars who have been flooding the book markets of the world for the last ten years with books about the Bolsheviks.
Liam O'Flaherty aka Liam O Flaithearta (1896-1984) was a significant Irish novelist and short story writer and a major figure in the Irish literary renaissance. O'Flaherty was the son of Maidhc O Flaithearta and Maggie Ganley of Gort na gCapall. In 1908, at the age of 12, he went to Rockwell College. This was followed by enrollments at Holy Cross and University College, Dublin. He did not attend the first two schools for long. He had intended joining the priesthood, but in 1917 he left school and joined the Irish Guards under the name 'Bill Ganly'.
He served on the Western Front, where he was injured, and it is possible that the shell shock he suffered may have been responsible for the mental illness which became apparent in 1933. After the war O'Flaherty left Ireland and moved to the United States, where he lived in Hollywood for a short time. The well-known director John Ford, a cousin, later turned O Flaithearta's novel, The Informer, into a film. Many of his works have the common theme of nature and Ireland.
He was a distinguished short story writer, and some his best work in that genre was in Irish. In 1923, O'Flaherty published his first novel, Thy Neighbour's Wife, thought to be one of his best. Over the next couple of years he published other novels and short stories. In 1933 he suffered from the first of two mental breakdowns. He travelled in the United States and Europe, and the letters he wrote while travelling have now been published. He had a love of French and Russian culture, and this may have been part of the attraction he felt towards communism. Before his death, however, he left the Communist Party and returned to the Roman Catholic faith.

    Novelist's eye for Russia
In the 1930s, Liam Flaherty went to Russia. He arrived by steamship, interacted with the crew, saw how they treated each other, Finns at a port, and then his impressions of the USSR. His observations of what he saw of the lies they told each other, what impressed him, what made them afraid, give one an impressionistic, traveler's eye view of Russia between the two Great Wars. Some of his observations are funny, some are sad, but all speak of truthful experience.

A Country town thrown into chaos and defiance by a summer flood that threatens the festival pageant; a quarrel of hot young blood over the charms of rival beauty queens, a fishing competition with a compassionate embezzler's fortune at stake; a real battle between York and Lancaster with the wrong side winning; a female Communist redhead, a teetotal publican, an insufferable baronet, a mountainous American ex-soldier; and a lot of other characters who are only life-size-here is indeed the right material for a novel by John Moore.
He has not failed to make good use of it. His robust pen races round his beloved countryside, bringing the multiple strands of its life to the coherent pattern of the novel. Very many readers of Portrait of Elmbury, Brensham Village and The Blue Field have come to love John Moore's vision of England. All the ingredients of hurly-burly and hotchpotch, generosity and luxuriance, homeliness, character, comedy, country and a sense of the past, will be found in this book. And the mixture is as rich as before.

In a gripping debut novel that combines power, politics, and the press, John Luciew introduces a rogue reporter whose new lease on life may be the end of him... Great
Great book love this author I read a lot off different people up there in my top ten favourite authors
    A Medium Effort
I didn't much like the writing style and the central character which was booze. The secondary cast seems to go into liver shock if they are deprived of alcohol for a few hours. I am aware that the narrator is an alcoholic but his regeneration is still fueled by alcohol. I found the people in the book depressing, one of them a rabid overachiever and all of them generally unsympathetic. The book has a grey mist over it which never really lifts.
Maybe the whole world of journalism is driven only by over imbibing, but that doesn't make it mysterious or interesting. That theme is overdone in this book. I found it mainly boring, even though I seem to be in a minority here.
    An Original and Entertaining Read
After being a reporter for over forty years, Lenny Holcomb is as dead inside as the people whose obituaries he writes. He drinks too much, his wife has left him, he has no friends, and his career has dead-ended in the obits he writes for Pennsylvaniaï¿s The Harrisburg Herald. This all changes when, in the midst of writing yet another obituary, Lenny drifts off and suddenly notices that heï¿s revealing secrets about the deceased that were never disclosed and he should not know. When Lenny discovers that whatï¿s heï¿s writing is true, he is at a loss at how to use this information until a prominent supporter of the current governor and presidential hopeful dies and Lennyï¿s fugue obit writing reveals financial fraud and scandal.
Now back on page one, Lenny is teamed with the young Jacquelyn ï¿Jackï¿ Towers, a reporter who is everything Lenny is not. Sheï¿s impulsive, ambitious, confident, and decisive. Their investigations seem to be leading towards the taking down of the governor until suddenly Lenny finds his career derailed and heï¿s back to writing obits.
