John Piper's diary for Saturday December 7th read: Fritz Haupmann. Call 2.30 re factory insurance cover with Cresset. When Piper arrived at the house and saw his client lounging in an armchair listening to Mozart, he had no reason to think that this was one day he would never forget. It was not Haupmann's premonitions of disaster that so impressed themselves on Piper, nor even the startling beauty of Gizelle Haupmann...
Disregarding the warnings Haupmann had been given at seances held by a London spiritualist association, Piper endorsed the additional insurance that Haupmann asked for. No sooner were the policies issued than it became apparent that something more tangible than ghostly spirits was bent on injuring Fritz Haupmann. Somebody hated him: somebody was prepared to conduct a ruthless vendetta against him and all he held dear. Harry Carmichael's latest novel builds up by way of numerous adroit twists, shifts of suspicion and rising excitement to a sensational climax.
Leo Ognall (1908-1979), who wrote several novels under the pseudonyms Harry Carmichael and Hartley Howard, was born in Montreal and worked as a journalist before starting his fiction career. He wrote over ninety novels before his death in 1979. Harry Carmichael's primary series, written from 1952-1978, The Piper and Quinn series included characters such as John Piper (an insurance assessor) and Quinn, a crime reporter. His other works include: The Glenn Bowman series, 1951-1979; The Philip Scott series, 1964-1967.

    Publisher's Summary:
Miss Ursula Brett, known to her friends as Noodles, gets sent back to her seaside school by her miserly uncle after apparently encouraging improper advances from the persistent and slimy Mr Fitzgibbon. But her vivacious beauty and kind-heartedness lead her into further trouble and she runs away to join the seafront Pierrot players. Luckily, her brother (with his best friend 'Snubs'), her aunt Mrs Millet, and her uncle's neighbours Sylvia Shirley and Mrs Shirley, are all in Newcliff-on-Sea for the bank holiday weekend.
Denis Mackail was born in London on 3 June 1892. He went to Balliol College, Oxford, but failed to complete his degree through ill-health after two years. In 1917 he married Diana Granet, only child of the railway manager Sir Guy Granet, who was a director-general for railways in the War Office. The couple had two children and lived in Chelsea, London. It was the necessity of supporting his young family that lead Denis to write a novel when office jobs became insecure after the end of the war. With his novel published, his first short-story accepted by the prestigious Strand Magazine and the services of a literary agent, A. P. Watt, Denis was soon earning enough from his writing to give up office work. He published a novel every year from 1920 to 1938 and among his literary friends were P. G. Wodehouse and A. A. Milne. During the 1930s Mackail lived at Bishopstone House, Bishopstone near Seaford, Sussex. Denis agreed to write the official biography of J. M. Barrie, which appeared in 1941. He went on to produce seven more novels and some books of reminiscences, but after the early death of his wife in 1949, he published no more and lived quietly in London until his death. He died on 4 August 1971.

    A Pleasant Romp
An amusing novel from the days between the wars in the early 20th Century. I enjoy reading about this era. I loved the early novels I read by MacKails sister, Angela Thirkell, but eventually grew sick of her snobbishness and bigotry. I am a P. G. Wodehouse fanatic and when I found he was a friend and admirer of the work of Denis MacKail, I went looking for his novels, hoping they might be Thirkell without the nastiness. His books are hard to find; a few are out of copyright and generally available, a couple are recently republished, but the rest are out-of-print and almost unobtainable. It's a shame what the copyright laws have done to the availability of more obscure works of fiction. I found "Another Part of the Wood" to be one of his better works; it features a likable young heroine. Some of his other novels got far too involved in business machinations, mergers and dirty-dealings, for my taste.

"... an international team of researchers... has finally come to the conclusion that the cat is the manliest pet." This gem of wisdom, and many, many others, are embedded in the search of one man - and his cat - for the Truth. Join them as they travel from "healer" to "healer" in their quest for wholeness. The Healings offers a pleasing marriage of humor and seriousness of life's situations.
    From the author:
"Born and raised in the Balkans, a very culturally diverse area, I have been writing since I could hold a pen but it wasn't until I moved to the U.S. that I discovered that spontaneous, dark humor was part of my heritage.
"The character in my stories is a depressed male - the universal human being in search of his own Self and his place in the society and, on a deeper level in the world. In his quest for healing, he is accompanied by his one and only partner, his talking cat.
"The thoughts and dialogues, naive and hilarious as they seem, offer a deep insight into life, death and what's in between.
"Written in the first person, the short stories depict his encounters with those whom he calls 'sources of wisdom' from shamans to scientists, from dream interpreters to psychiatrists, from flesh-and-bone creatures to illusory entities or just bizarre life situations.
"I invite you to take a very vivid and strong journey into the raw and uncensored human mind."

A Lady Has Come to Sit at the Throne of the Masters
It is six o'clock in the morning and I am framing my review of The Healings.I wonder how it was created. Could this apparent whole have been written backwards, or in juxtaposition with a labyrinthine puzzle in an Eastern European maze Could the stories be interchanged? In The Healings, I recognize the searching of lost Americans for truth among the milkman or in garbage heaps or in the inaudible musical chambers of the charlatans and word meisters. I become breathless when I soon discover I am in the hands of such a gifted master. In The Healings, Oana does nothing but reveal in sometimes whimsical, almost flirtatious irony, nothing less than the narrator's vulnerable soul. Her narrator, who sometimes seems too sensitive to be male in the scratch your belly world by the T.V. tube, does not want to reveal himself yet is often called to be in the spotlight of some inner truth. That truth, despite the revelation, must be brought to light, held up for surgical inspection, much like The healing that occurs with knives in the hysterical Balkan wedding. With irony, much more serious in intent than most Americans can comfortably find humorous, Oana is able to awaken in the chambers of the immortals: it is no exaggeration to think about Harry Haller in the Magic Theater in Herman Hesse's Der Steppenwolf, or Mikhail Bulgakov in The Master and Margarita. Ms. Niculae has suffered to write The Healings. What makes her attempt so absolutely astounding is that, past the pain and suffering her narrator must endure to find harmony, transcendence occurs each and every line that has been written. Only humor keeps the narrator alive.

WELCOME TO LAZARUS - A GOOD READ
Bob Smith was lucky enough to land a job as a news reporter in Little Rock, Ark. His luck didn't last, at least when it came the old car he owned. Broken down in the seemingly tranquil town of Lazarus, his curiosity was aroused by the "birthday boy" sitting next to him on a bench. In a short conversation Bob had learned the man was celebrating his 128th birthday. The gent didn't look a day over ... well, he didn't look that old. Neither did the pretty girl at the hotel or the kid riding his bicycle near the Dairy Delight. Lazarus was a town full of "young" people who had found their very own Fountain of Youth.
But that was a secret the whole town will kill to protect and Bob, after all, was a reporter. The town had to do something to keep the story quiet. What happens next makes for some very intense moments for Bob and the readers of WELCOME TO LAZARUS.
Jackie Griffey spins a tale of intrigue that will scare the pants off some, and delight everyone who loves the mystery/horror genres. Danger and deja vu make this book a page turner you can't put down.

Ghetto King is too close to home!
The book was real and I really wish it was a bad nightmare in Southside Chicago. But, so much of what is happening in the book is happening on our streets today. I pray for all the kids in the inner city and I pray we can learn from this books some golden nuggets that will stop the violence. Our children deserve better.
    Ghetto Kings
I very seldom give a bad review but I just didn't care for this book. Maybe it's just me but the story seemed to jump around a lot, and some parts of the dialog was kind of funny who talks like that. That is all I'm to say I don't want to spoil it for others.

    Title: The Drone Incident
    Author: Martin Kaynan
    Narrator: Ellery Truesdell
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-14-13
    Publisher: Martin Kaynan
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The Drone Incident centers on two men - miles apart geographically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally - whose lives collide in a dramatic confrontation.
Fighter pilot Tom (Iceman) Belton is coldly indifferent, even when killing hundreds in the first Gulf War. It isn't until witnessing the birth of his son that he is able to feel, or to show sensitivity and compassion. A decade later in Kansas City, after seeing leukemia take his wife's last breath, he reverts to cold-hearted indifference - at his son's expense.
Meanwhile, in Mexico City, 18-year old aeronautical engineering student Juan Vasquez is guilt-ridden after being involved in an automobile accident that leaves a five-year-old dead. Vasquez grudgingly lets his brother persuade him to convert to Islam. He finds peace - until the love of his life and his brother are slaughtered in a drone attack in Pakistan. Juan Vasquez becomes Abdul Mansur, a vengeance-besotted killer, vowing to use his skin color and Spanish heritage as camouflage.
The lives of the two personality-conflicted men intersect when Captain Belton discovers the autopilot, not the crew, is controlling his NFL charter flight bound for Washington D.C. He learns that Vasquez/Mansur has reprogrammed the plane's autopilot to crash into the National Security Agency and destroy its eavesdropping capability. Fighter jets and the programmed flight path directly into a violent electrical storm add to the tension.
The Drone Incident is a fast-paced tale of courage versus human frailty.

Terror in the sky! Another exciting novel which will have you turning pages quickly.
The book was very good with a great story line about a terrorist group trying to control a commercial plane and bring it down to destroy a building. The main characters were developed well. It goes into detail about how and why the character became a terrorist. The pilot who had to prevent the attack had a personality described as ice and how he got there was well described.
My only problem with the book was that at 141 pages it was too short. Because of that the terrorist attacks had to be neutralized very rapidly with the clues falling into place very quickly. I did enjoy reading the book and will recommend it, but it will be a very quick read.
    "THE SLEEPER CELL DRONE"
I thought this story would be just another dupe of a terrorist hijacking. I was wrong. The idea of a fanatical Jihadist reprogramming a plane's auto-pilot so that it would crash into and destroy the National Security Agency is a fantastic twist.
Instead of trying to kill as many American "infidels" as possible with suicide bombings, by using the chartered Boeing 717 as a guided missle the terrorists hope to stop the agency from eavesdropping on all of their devilish plans. If they are successful then none of their schemes can be compromised. This
    is truly a unique concept.
"THE SLEEPER CELL DRONE" opens with the pilot and co-pilot of
the chartered flight chatting back and forth while they are an hour or so from Washington D.C.

    Publisher's Summary:
A collection of seven short stories, from the master of regional fiction, Phyllis Bentley. A native of Yorkshire, Bentley elegantly captures the essence of a simple rural life in her words, while expressing the lives, loves and difficulties of the people who live there with a real sensitivity of emotion. These stories range from an old feud in 1350 to the post-war coming of European refugees to the Yorkshire mills. All the tales are founded on fact, but the motivation, the cause, of these facts has remained unknown, or misunderstood, through the centuries.
The awful betrayal, the highwayman's thefts, the fatal gift of a textile design, the stubborn refusal of a right of way, the religious conflict, the jealousy, the bitterness, are contained in these seven stories:
Phyllis Bentley, 1894 - 1977 Bentley published her first work in 1918, a collection of short stories entitled The World's Bane, after which she published several poor-selling novels. The publication in March 1932 of her best-known work, Inheritance, set against the background of the development of the textile industry in the West Riding, received widespread critical acclaim and ran through twenty-three impressions by 1946, making her the first successful English regional novelist since Thomas Hardy and his Wessex. In 1949 she was awarded an honorary DLitt from Leeds University; in 1958 she became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature; and in 1970 was awarded an OBE.

Times are changed with him who marries; there are no more bypath meadows where you may innocently linger, but the road lies long and straight and dusty to the grave. So wrote Robert Louis Stevenson. Christine felt bound to agree. My wife can do anything, Vinson said. Even if anything meant getting used to the size and pace of his country, America? Wearing a sycophantic smile for the wife of Admiral Hamer (who wore patent-leather shoes like bananas) Because Vin hoped to be promoted? Having a cold Turkey and a cold ham at every party? Smiling through The inevitable silences of marriage? Was Vinson what she really wanted? Even on the cold, bleak days when nothing went right, the crazy neighbour called while Captain Decker was having cocktails, Vins mother had an appendectomy during a thunderstorm, she lost out on the TV quiz and she and Vin quarrelled Bitterly? In No More Meadows, Monica Dickens unravels the threads of a very real marriage, with her inimitable warmth and sense of idiosyncratic character.
Great granddaughter to Charles Dickens, Monica (1915-1992) was born into an upper middle class family. Disillusioned with the world she was brought up in - she was expelled from St Pauls Girls School in London for throwing her school uniform over Hammersmith Bridge - Dickens then decided to go into service, despite coming from the privileged class; her experiences as a cook and general servant would form the nucleus of her first book, One Pair Of Hands in 1939. Dickens married an American Navy officer, Roy O. Stratton, and spent much of her adult life in Massachusetts and Washington D.C., but the majority of writing continued to be set in Britain. Her book of 1953, No More Meadows, reflected her work with the NSPCC and she later helped to found the American Samaritans in Massachusetts. Between 1970 and 1971 she wrote a series of childrens books known as The Worlds End Series which dealt with rescuing animals, and to some extent children. After the death of her husband in 1985, Dickens returned to England where she continued to write until her death aged 77.

    love Monica Dickens...
I've been reading her novels for many years. great to hear them read to me for the first time. Some of the narrator's pronunciations seemed a little odd.
Read in a flat monotone that kills the story
    Any additional comments?
Oh dear. I have several of Monica Dicken's books, well read, well loved. That's why I was sure I'd enjoy this, one of my favourite books.
Sorry, I'm going to have to return it. It's not so much narrated as 'read out loud in a flat monotone', and I can't stick with it, it's so intensely irritating.
