    Author: L.A.G. Strong

Length: 4 hrs and 35 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-17-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Uncle Edward was shocked. Of course he remembered! He knew all about Guy Fawkes and his gang of violent and dangerous criminals. Mr Spence, however, was not so sure: what had been the rights and wrongs of that famous plot? Yet it was to Uncle Edward that Time played the trick, carrying him back to the comings and goings of Catesby, Guy Fawkes (alias Mr Johnson), and the other conspirators.
Viewing the events close to, Uncle Edward's convictions were shaken: the men he had thought hard-hearted and violent criminals were perhaps after all honest men driven to desperation by oppression and persecution.
For Dick the experience of going back in time was different: a few, scattered facts learnt at school took on a new, exciting reality as he witnessed the perilous risks run by Guy Fawkes and his friends in a great cause. To his surprise too, he learnt that he himself was a descendant of one of the participants in that famous drama: indeed it almost seemed as if for a moment of time Dick was himself that very person.

    Title: Dear Doctor Lily
    Author: Monica Dickens
    Narrator: Lauren Irwin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 16 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-16-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
When two young women, Lily and Ida, meet on a flight to America they embark on a relationship that is to see them through two very different marriages and is to bring them comfort and distress, joy and tragedy, in equal measure as the years unfold.
Great-granddaughter to Charles Dickens, Monica (1915-1992) was born into an upper-middle-class family. Disillusioned with the world she was brought up in - she was expelled from St Paul's Girls' School in London for throwing her school uniform over Hammersmith Bridge - Dickens then decided to go into service, despite coming from the privileged class. Her experiences as a cook and general servant would form the nucleus of her first book, One Pair of Hands, in 1939.
Dickens married an American Navy officer, Roy O. Stratton, and spent much of her adult life in Massachusetts and Washington D.C., but the majority of her writing continued to be set in Britain. Her book of 1953, No More Meadows, reflected her work with the NSPCC and she later helped to found the American Samaritans in Massachusetts. Between 1970 and 1971 she wrote a series of children's books known as The Worlds End Series, which dealt with rescuing animals and, to some extent, children. After the death of her husband in 1985, Dickens returned to England where she continued to write until her death, aged 77.

Another book ruined by terrible narration
What would have made Dear Doctor Lily better?
I couldn't get beyond the frightful narration to the actual story and had to stop listening. This reader does not have even a basic command of English pronunciation: "pull" spoken to rhyme with "hull", "took" pronounced as "huck" - and so on. It's not even just a matter of a regional accent, which would be fine. She reads without any apparent understanding of the text and inflects the wrong words. Why, oh why, do they choose these people to read when there are so many wonderful actors and other narrators around?

very good (but sad) short story
This is a really good, but sad short story - especially if you are a cat lover like me! The author was correct in saying that you would need tissue when you read it ... I cried over the story.
    Sad
This was a very sad story that I didn't like one bit. Wasn't what I thought it would be at all. I hoped for something inspiring and I got a book that was very depressing. Tissue wasn't helpful since the story stuck in my mind for awhile afterwards. The only good thing was that it was a very short read.

Length: 9 hrs and 25 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-15-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The flames in the title are by no means merely symbolic: they are the real flames of an Andean volcano in wild eruption. And it is in this hot, insane world of ashes, lava and earthquake that the business mission of Harold Dunnett, the young audit clerk, comes to sudden disaster. Sent out by his firm to investigate the suspicious trading affairs of Senior Muras, Mr. Dunnett, always very careful of his professional reputation, finds himself being drawn into a human jungle quite as impenetrable as the steamy jungle that lies outside Amricante. For one thing, the Amricante politicians are all businessmen, and some of the businessmen have politicians in their pockets: there is intrigue and corruption in the air.
The books of the Compania Muras are mysteriously unobtainable: confidential cables go astray: key witnesses are missing. Mr. Dunnett himself is cajoled, offered bribes, warned and finally threatened. Throughout it all, however, he remains the perfect audit clerk, aloof and immaculate, vainly cabling his employers and writing affectionate letters to the nice little fiancée whom he left at home in England. Then Senior Muras himself disappears up country and Mr. Dunnett, faithful in his purpose, goes in pursuit of him. At this point the local volcano blows its head off: all communications with the outside world are sundered. In his desperate pursuit Harold finds himself involved not only in a local war, but with Carmel Muras, the beautiful daughter of Senior Muras. Together they experience danger and disaster.

    Language: English
    Release date: 05-15-13

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Set in an off-the-map British Colony in Central Africa in the early 1930's, The Governor's Lady portays a host of interesting characters: young Harold Stebbs, bachelor, newly appointed to the Governor's secretariat in Amimbo; the Governor, Sir Gardnor Hackforth, already something of a Pro-consular legend in the Service, and tipped by The Times for the next Viceroyship; Mr. Frith, the passed-over Acting Chief Secretary, a rather too familiar figure at the bar in the Milner Club; Tony Henley, the A.D.C., who has ultimately to be disowned; Old Moses, the trusted Mimbo butler and key figure in the Residency; the socially irresistible Mr. Ngono; Mr. Talefwa, left-wing editor of the African Independence newspaper, War Drum; and Mr. Das, itinerant legal Counsel called in by the Defence. Then there is the Governor's Lady herself; twenty years younger than Sir Gardnor; somewhat withdrawn from Government life because of an incident that occurred before Harold Stebbs arrived; and already the subject of gossip in European, African and Asian circles alike. There is also Lady Anne's lady-in-waiting, Sybil Prosser, who has her own reasons for discretion.
Norman Richard Collins (1907 - 1982) was born in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. In his early career he worked in publishing while also writing and publishing several successful novels. In 1941 Collins began working at the BBC. During this time he became known for his innovative programming which included Woman's Hour which still airs today on BBC Radio Four. He rose to Controller of the BBC Television Service, later leaving to co-found what is now ITV after deciding a competitior to the BBC's monopoly was needed. Collins continued to write fiction throughout his busy working life. Although never a full-time writer he was a fluent and prolific author with sixteen titles and two plays to his credit between 1934 and 1981. An autograph edition of twelve of his novels was published during the 1960s.

This was a very good snapshot of the times when the book was placed
This was a very good snapshot of the times when the book was placed, showing the bureaucracy of the Colonial governments- and the detachments from those governed.
The self-serving "Lady" was well depicted, I think, as was her lady-in-waiting, showing the shallow personalities and amoral undercurrents.
The entanglement of the main characters was expected, and did offer a thread of his affection and unlikely devotion, ending in "just desserts", somehow all being justifiable. This reader didn't feel that there was a worthwhile message or any take-away from the work that made it quite special.
    Graham Greene-ish... Somerset Maugham-ish...
A marvellous read... don't miss this classic. If you like the steamy tropical settings and eccentric characters of writers like Greene, Conrad or Maugham you'll love this book. Norman Collins is a wonderful writer. The Governor's Lady has everything - adventure and terror, love and hate, secrets and lies, ambition and disappointment... all simmering together in a tropical stew. I didn't want the book to end.

    Publisher's Summary:
The man who asks a woman what she wants deserves all that's coming to him! This was Melanie's viewpoint and she always knew exactly what she wanted. Julia was different. She worked in a dress shop and she was often disturbed about her younger sister's morals. Both head strong, their differing character traits meant that their parents didn't know what to make of either of them. Here, against a background of smart and not-so-smart London we see the business girl and the girl-about-town meeting their difficulties in sex and in the daily routine.
Alec Waugh, 1898-1981, was a British novelist born in London and educated at Sherborne Public School, Dorset. Waughs first novel, The Loom of Youth (1917), is a semi-autobiographical account of public school life that caused some controversy at the time and led to his expulsion. Waugh was the only boy ever to be expelled from The Old Shirburnian Society. Despite setting this record, Waugh went on to become the successful author of over 50 works, and lived in many exotic places throughout his life which later became the settings for some of his texts. He was also a noted wine connoisseur and campaigned to make the cocktail party a regular feature of 1920s social life.

    Publisher's Summary:
Alec Waugh describes his novel as an erotic comedy. It is the story of a respectable Treasury official, Victor Trail, and his wife Myra, whose marriage has lost its flavour, owing to Victor's clock-work schedule and Myra's bland acceptance of it. The unexpected revelation that Victor has suspiciously altered his routine rouses Myra out of her complacency, and her jealousy rapidly changes the shape of their lives. It leads her into a series of quite extraordinary adventures and demimonde activities which are altogether astonishing in a respectable married woman. Her discomfiture is made all the more excruciating by her new-found intimacy with Victor, who apparently knows nothing about her illegal actions and amazing amatory diversions-or does he?

Boring. Erotic? Maybe by 1970's standards of a book written by an elderly man. Worst Alec Waugh book that I have read. If you want eroticism read something else.
