Exciting!

Most enjoyable. Action never stops. You won't want to stop reading it. This is the third book I've read by Gerard de Marigny and they keep getting better.

Excellent book! I am definitely anticipating the continuation of the story!

Gerald de Marigny is an excellent writer and story-teller. He captured my attention on the first page of book #1 as the main, character, Chris Deniro is buying flowers for his wife near New York's World Trade Center's Twin Towers, on September 11, 2001. He researches his facts, well. I love his books!

Maybe the best of the first 3!!!

Rise To The Call may just be the best of the authors first 3 books in this series. It is certainly on par with The Watchman Of Ephraim and a captivating enjoyable read.

A Team Effort

The third novel in the Cris de Niro series, Rise to the Call, is an interesting take on the thriller genre. I haven't read the first two books, but I was impressed by this one, which read similarly to one of Brad Thor's early novels.

The "corporate" nature of the Watchman Agency calls to mind the Clive Cussler "Oregon Files" series with Juan Cabrillo, and I was pleased to see that Marigny allows his main character to take a back seat from time to time. The "lone wolf" aspect so common to thrillers has long been a pet peeve of mine, and Rise to the Call clearly portrays counterterrorism as a team effort.

With action that spans the globe from the United States to Iran, and considerable high-tech gadgets, the story certainly appeals to techno-thriller fans, with a world that is peopled with principled spooks, mafia, Russian deep-cover agents, and Iranian leaders.

All told, a fascinating read, although there were multiple times that I found myself paging back to make sure I was keeping everything straight--there's a lot of action and a lot of characters to keep track of. Character development, although something I would have liked to have seen a lot more of, is roughly on par with the genre.

Rise to the Call is certainly worth your while to check out, and I've subsequently bought the preceding two novels of the series, to read and review in time. My rating: 3.8 stars. Recommended.

I have always enjoyed thrillers with a geopolitical overtone and "Rise of the Call" has definitely given me hours of enjoyment. This story is a wonderful and exciting journey into the world of terrorists and the forces that try to stay one step ahead of them.

Exquisite writing

Weaving a through time and continents, McCann is a master storyteller. The language is so beautifully wrought I underlined so much of it!

So Continental!

This is a classic story (instant classic?) with several intertwined plots. I can imagine this becoming a major motion picture. In TRANSATLANTIC we find great characters on both sides of the Atlantic, many based on historical figures and events. Based on this reading experience I plan to explore other works by McCann.

My wife loved the book

This was a gift -- my wife loved the book.

Mostly I really liked it

McCann's sentences are beauties. I enjoyed the book, except for third chapter, on Frederick Douglass. It seemed like nothing happened in that chapter except one read about Douglass' thoughts. Maybe I was high-strung when reading that chapter. The rest of the book was very enjoyable. McCann is a very fine writer, no doubt about it.

Beautifully written

Colum McCann is an extraordinary writer. I highlighted many of his beautiful sentences and turns of phrase. The book is really a number of stories, all but the last having to do with travel across the Atlantic between Ireland and North America. Each chapter skillfully sketches one character's biography. By the end of the book, we are shown how these individuals have crossed paths or once been related. A graceful, thoughtfully written, lyrical book.

LOVE LOVE LOVE

Darcia Helle has done it again! I absolutely LOVED this book and I finished it just as the battery for my Kindle Fire ran out! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading it and I'd have been devastated to have to charge the device in order to finish! Even though she chose not to update the time frame in which the story takes place, I believe it transcends that because the story is relevant even in the 2000s! At times, I even forgot that it was taking place in the early 1990s! Thanks for such a good read, my friend!

A must read!

This book is full of twists and turns that you don't expect. It's well-written and very intriguing. The characters are well-rounded. Some are lovable, some are admired, others are hated. But you'll want to know what each character does next.

When you sit down to read this, make sure you have time to finish because you won't want to stop.

Taut Psychological Thriller

Secrets by Darcia Helle is a taut psychological thriller that will you keep you reading late into the night. Samantha appears to have the perfect life, being a rich model with a successful husband. But she has a horrible secret that she is keeping to herself about her past. Will the secret be revealed and ruin her marriage and her life? This fast-paced thriller will take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions, horror and survival.

The writing style flows easily and the writing is intense and thought provoking. So many emotions are experienced while reading the book and at times I found myself holding my breath.

The characters are very real and you could feel the emotions that were being experienced by the characters throughout the entire story.

This is the second book of read by Darcia Helle. The two books could not be more different. secrets is a dark psychological thriller, Into the Light (the other book that Iâve read by this author) is a light ghost mystery. It amazes me that Darcia can write both types of books equally well. That, to me, is the sign of a great author. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a psychological thriller and those who like emotional reads. I canât wait to read another one of Darcia Helleâs books.

Terrifyingly Real

There is something commendable in a writer who âgoes thereâ. In Secrets, Helle does. Strip away politeness, political correctness and rose-coloured glasses, and cue the emotional turmoil as she makes us stare raw humanity in the face.

Secrets is a story of a young, beautiful woman with a seemingly perfect life. But sheâs created a past that doesnât exist to shield herself and those she loves from the truth. And the real past sheâs been hiding comes looking for her.

This gets scary and unpredictable. As a warning, please note that this book discusses (not gratuitously) molestation, incest and violence. This is a suspense novel with grit, an emotional thriller, and an intensely satisfying mystery.

What other book might you compare Sisterland to, and why?

To Sittenfeld's previous books "American Wife" and "Prep" which I loved. This isn't quite as brilliant as the other two, but I really enjoyed it nevertheless. The ending felt a little contrived to me, but that's just a small niggle.

What about Laurence Bouvards performance did you like?

I thought it was spot on.

It's a quiet story, but very absorbing. The portrayal of the relationship between the two sisters is utterly convincing. There were a few moments which made me laugh out loud.

Didn't really know where this book would go, but from the start it sets out it's stall pretty well in the borderline magical arena, but it retains (very well) the core of the title, being about relationships and the ups and downs of family relationships. I was truly enchanted

Do sons bear the sins of their father? Thats the question facing new bride Kate Krause in Jess McConkeys novel, THE WIDOWS OF BRAXTON COUNTY. Kates excitement over starting a new life with her husband Joe on his familys farm quickly turns to despair when the dark side of Joe begins to emerge. Kate learns that Joes great-great grandfather was murdered in the farmhouse in 1890, and that he was a cold man who abused his wife Hannah. Rumor is that the Krause family is cursed because of Jacobs cruelty, and tragedy has plagued the family for over a century.

This was an intriguing murder mystery with a hint of the supernatural and so much more. The chapters alternated between Hannah in 1890 and Kate in present day. (I love dual time periods!) Both women were strong protagonists, and I was particularly impressed by Hannahs strength and courage. The book addresses domestic violence, womens rights and their place in society in the 19th century, and the struggles early suffragettes had to face. It also explores violent behavior of parents and its effects on children later in life.

I enjoyed Coleen Marlos narration of this book. She gave a lively performance and did a fantastic job giving distinct voices to Kate, Hannah, and a sizable cast of secondary characters. A couple of the men had a noticeable growl to their voice, which I thought was appropriate given their disposition!

THE WIDOWS OF BRAXTON COUNTY was a compelling novel with an important message and a satisfying surprise twist at the very end! This ones going on my keeper shelf. Recommended to fans of mystery, suspense, family secrets, and womens fiction.

A modern day Dostoevsky?

A brief look at the list of writers that have sharpened their pencils at the Iowa Writers' Workshop shows how outstanding the talent is that goes through this institution. Writers as diverse and eloquent as Raymond Carver, John Irving, T.C. Boyle and Pinckney Benedict have learnt the tricks of the trade at the Ur-workshop of all creative writing schemes. Madison Smartt Bell has taught there.

Waiting For The End Of The World, his second novel, is a whole lot better plotted and constructed than his already quite promising debut Washington Square Ensemble, delivered at the tender age of 26.

Set in the valleys of Manhattan and Brooklyn, Waiting For The End Of The World is a modern day tale, a dark and doomy epic of Russian proportions. No other book - of the nine novels and two short story collections - that Bell has written to date has even been close to the boiling dark atmospheres, layered and set into deeper and even deeper, unknown systems and tunnels of the ultimate urban landscape that is New York City. Nothing compares to this helter skelter with its seemingly random anecdotes, a definitive plot, and tales of utter lunacy.

As ludicrous as it will sound, Waiting For The End Of The World is a classic on a par with Dostoevsky's works (which did indeed serve as some serious inspiration)

A little slow out of the gate, but a strong finish.

There actually is a lot of plot in this book, a group of terrorists trying to set off a nuclear bomb in New York City, a child-torturing devil-worshipper turned skid-row serial killer, Vietnam horror stories, the Sorbonne riots of the 60's, a mafia mass-murder, an American drug courier's unpleasant stay in a Mexican prison, and a former junkie disfigured by his own mother turned arsonist. Not to mention appearances by a ghost, a few cases of spontaneous human combustion and a very Dostoevsky-ish devil.

Yet for some unknown reason, Bell decides to start off with a longish episode of the main protagonist watching the changes in the sky.

an intense novella

Imagine being in a bus with scary figures like the Wendigo and cannibals wanting to get in. This is an intense tale, with a man named Drew as the lead character who has many obstacles ahead of him. I enjoyed this novella's fast pace and high level of suspense.

Myth, philosophy, and psychology, with a Native American twist

I've had this on my Kindle for some time, but only just got around to reading it. Although I don't usually read horror, I definitely liked the Native American twist. Even more, I liked the depth of psychology, philosophy, and myth that was incorporated. Mr. Yeomans is a fine writer and I look forward to reading more of his stories.

The Last Shaman

I read the book and was drawn into the story right from the first. Even when other things needed my attention, I kept reading until I finished. The title is what caught my attention as well as the cover. I liked the twists he had in the story. Characters weren't quite what I expected and that kept me turning the page. {Clicking the scroll button through thick and thin.}

Roland Yeoman's Books: The Last Shaman

I purchased this as a Kindle book and have enjoyed it immensely.

My problem is with all eBooks: I like holding a book, referring back to a specific page, marking it up, and passing it on to a family member.

Roland is an awesome writer. He clearly understands his Native American culture and stays true to its teachings in his writing. I look forward to buying a solid paper book someday!

A Richly Woven Story

The Last Shaman introduces us to Wolf Howl, known to others as Drew August, a hunted man in more ways than one. The story begins on an ill-fated Greyhound bus, and leads us into a world rich with images and Native American folklore. The child he saves proves to be a pivotal figure, as is Shadow, the woman he loves, who has also joined the hunt. Recommended for anyone who enjoys thrillers, myths, folklore, Native American themes, or tales of the paranormal.
