Title: Of Wee Sweetie Mice and Men
    Subtitle: A Dan Starkey Mystery
    Author: Colin Bateman
    Narrator: Glen Murrant
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-01-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Journalist Dan Starkey, hero of Divorcing Jack, is back, a few Guinnesses past sober, but quick as ever with the sarcastic rejoinder - and this time his knack for adventure, and misadventure, takes him to the unsuspecting streets of New York City.
Starkey has signed on to cover the heavyweight title fight between the Irish national champion, Fat Boy McMaster, and Iron Mike Tyson. McMaster is a far cry from Evander Holyfield, but despite the hundred-to-one odds against them, the St. Patricks Day fight promises to be a monstrous payday for the entire Irish contingent: Fat Boy himself, his wife (the only Catholic in the whole bunch), his doddering trainer, his small-time manager, and his childhood chum turned recently unemployed terrorist. And its a lucky break for Starkey himself, who is more desperate than even this ragged bunch for a relaxing sojourn away from the bloody conflict of his homeland - and of his home itself, where his marriage is dissolving as quickly as the ceasefire.
But when the stakes are this high, the Big Apple has more to dish out than fat paychecks and peaceful vacations. At his pre-fight press conference, McMaster sets off racial and political mayhem when he makes a few ill-advised remarks about the preponderance of black people in New York City, incurring the immediate enmity of a Black Muslim paramilitary group.
As Starkey's quiet holiday crumbles, his chronicle morphs into a quick-paced thriller complete with kidnappings, inner-city commando operations, and an elaborately sinister whale-watching cruise - none of which is enough to stem the flow of Starkeys crackling repartee. It turns out his sidesplittingly funny gallows humor is only that much more inspired when Starkey himself is barely dodging the hangmans noose.

Northen Ireland is very different from Canada
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Colin Bateman writes wonderful stories the time spent reading them or usually listening usually just flys by, but when you read them, you read them with the Belfast accent of the protagonist. Hearing them spoken by someone who was Canadian take away from the experience.
What other book might you compare Of Wee Sweetie Mice and Men to and why?
All of Colin Bateman has two series taht are broadly similar, the Mystery Man series and the Dan Starkey series of which this is one.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I feel sure that the narrator is better suited to the North American metier. He struggles with some of the Ulster idioms, changing the sense of the book, sometimes adding hilarity where there shouldn't be. The pronunciation of fenian as 'finian' rather than 'feenyan' was a bit annoying. The characters taht weren't Northen Irish were African American, so again the Canadian accent was less of an issue, but still didn't feel right.
Could you see Of Wee Sweetie Mice and Men being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Thw Dan Starkey series would make for good TV, though it would need a predominantly Northen Irish cast.

    Publisher's Summary:
Dust Devil on a Quiet Street chronicles the remarkable life of Boston-born, New York City-reared author Richard Bowes's childhood and adolescent brushes with dramatic spirits and hustlers, large and small, paved the way for his adult encounters with the remarkable, the numinous, the supernatural. Deftly orchestrated, this ''memoir'' is part impassioned homage to Manhattan decades before and up to its recent wound on September 11th, which creates a hole in the city and allows the ghosts of the dead to return and part tell-all of the uncanny secrets behind life as a university librarian and a group of Greenwich Village writers.
    Members Reviews:
    A magic reading experience.
"Dust Devil On A Quiet Street" is a fantastic, sprawling dreamscape mosaic, a fictionalized memoir in which Richard Bowes charts his personal mythology - as a boy/man/brother/hustler/lover/librarian/writer of speculative fiction - and the mythology of a Protean New York City that's all-at-once haunted, dangerous, and beautiful.
The vignettes that form the whole of "Dust Devil" are told from borders - between sleeping and waking, addiction and sobriety, illness and wellness, youth and old age, the wild NYC of the late 60s/70s and the comparatively tidy NYC of Now. They are populated with figures that shaped and continue to shape Bowes' life - with friends like Mags and Geoff, with whom he formed a trio in his raucous youth; with spirits like Sister Immaculata, a spooky nun who visits Bowes during his stay at her haunt, St. Vincent's hospital; with erotic remembrances (The King of the Big Night Hours!); with Witch Girls and hustlers and a ghost cop and godchildren and Irving-inspired visions of flame-eyed pumpkins.
To be clear, there is a lot going on in "Dust Devil On A Quiet Street."
Bowes treats his encounters with both reality and the supernatural with equal parts wonder, fear, and remarkably, gratitude. "Dust Devil" is an experience that I'm grateful to have had. If you're willing to be transported to a magical and at-times frighteningly real NYC, if you're willing to surrender any common notions of time and memory you may hold, if you simply want a great read that comes from the heart and doesn't spare the gut (or the funny bone, or that miniature raceway on the spine upon which chills race up and down when prompted by spooky nuns, etc.), then pick up this book. You'll be glad you did, and you may find yourself sporting a new lens, looking towards the corners of your own vision for the local ghosts and small gods of your world.
    Beautiful
I appreciate a book that draws you forward into it rather than propels you through it. I felt like I was in a dream or memory while reading it. Not my dream or memory, but someone else's. It was as though I had been invited in with the host saying "come on in and let me show you around the place". The style reminds me of that of Charles Bukowski. It's very pure and direct writing, compelling in its simplicity and directness. Even when dealing with life's ghosts and dreams it maintains a sense of truth and stays solid. As one who reads a limited amount of fiction, I like to feel my time was well spent when I do.

    Publisher's Summary:
When WWII veteran Woody Wilson realizes that Alzheimer's is about to ground him forever, he goes on the run. Soon, he finds himself in a criminal justice system gone haywire. Thrown into events he neither controls nor understands, he demonstrates in his last heroic battle the depth of his inner resolve never to fail those he loves.
This fast-paced legal thriller is a poignant story of threadbare yet resilient love, and a scathing indictment of America's refusal to come to grips with the reality of Alzheimer's Disease and related forms of dementia.
Stephen Woodfin is an attorney and author of eight novels.

    A TRUE WARRIOR
It's hard to put into words the varying emotions after reading Stephen Woodfin's novel The Warrior With Alzheimer's: The Battle for Justice. Woody Wilson was a truly memorable, honorable man: a character that I won't soon forget. His world revolved around his wife Maggie. As a man with Alzheimer's, everything he did was because of or resulted from his great love for Maggie. She was his rock, his foundation even in the face of losing his memory. And the most beautiful thing of all was that she returned every ounce of that love back to him. This loving relationship is what we all would like to find with someone.
Woody had many memories that hadn't left him yet. Of course his love for Maggie and their grown son Waylon as a child, his days as a Veteran fighting for his country, his friends from his Veteran days, his friends that he boated and fished with were a few.
Someone kidnapped Woody and his world was turned upside down. He missed his beloved Maggie. Events got fast and crazy then. I won't spoil it by going any further with details. I highly recommend that you get this novel asap and I don't think for a minute you will be disappointed. You'll fall in love with Woodrow "Woody" Wilson and his wife Maggie just as I did. The ending was in my opinion the best one for this story.
Kudos to Stephen Woodfin for a great novel.
Just about the only thing that was realistic was retaining his love for his wife
My husband was a Vietnam vet who died, at home, of end stage Alzheimer's. I was his 24/7 caregiver. My father was a WWII vet and caregiver for his wife of 51 years, my mother, who died of end stage Alzheimer's. I've been an active member of several dementia caregiver discussion forums for more than 8 years. Woody does not bear the slightest resemblance to an Alzheimer's patient. Just about the only thing that was realistic was retaining his love for his wife. This book might be mildly okay as a fantasy, but as an anywhere close to accurate portrayal of what Alzheimer's patients and their families face? Not hardly.
A legal thriller which should worry you personally
Just because veteran soldier Woody's mind is going doesn't mean he is not dangerous. Stephen Woodfin handles this well-written legal thriller with compassion, while sending shivers down the spine.
***Spoiler alert - read the book first***
We hear in the news over and over how Alzheimer's Disease and other mental illnesses are affecting our veterans.

    Language: English
    Release date: 12-24-13
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
At age eight, Jenny Rowan was abducted and kept for two years in a box beneath her captor's bed. Eventually she escaped and, after living for eighteen months on cast-offs at the local mall, was put into the child-care system. Suing for emancipation, at age sixteen she became a legal adult. Nowadays she works as a production editor for the local public TV station, and is one of the world's good people.
One evening she returns home to find a detective waiting for her. Though her records are sealed, he somehow knows her story. He asks if she can help with a young woman who, like her many years before, has been abducted and traumatized. Initially hesitant, Jenny decides to get involved, reviving buried memories and setting in motion an unexpected interchange with the president herself.
As brilliantly spare and compact as are all of James Sallis's novels, Others of My Kind stands apart for its female protagonist. Set in a near future of political turmoil, it is a story of how we overcome, how we shape ourselves by what happens to us, and of how the human spirit, whatever horrors it undergoes, will not be put down.
    Members Reviews:
    Sallis: One of My Kind
This is a strange little novella about a young woman who is abducted and lives for a period of time in a wooden box under her captors bed. She eventually leaves him and embarks on a rather amazing life wherein she makes friends, achieves a level of education and ultimately begins to help others. It's in the classic Sallis stripped down, jump-cut style so you do not always get the information you might want in the order you might want it. Like the Lew Griffin series, which I've read and re-read, it is atmospheric at times. He creates a feeling that you can almost taste, by leaving things out. There's not a lot here, only 120pp or so, but it is well constructed if you like his sparse style. I do. You'll need to get it here if you want it. Bookstores and libraries do not seem to know much about James and even less about this work.
    Big fan of Sallis, but...
This one just didn't cut it for me. A very slow-burn with some muddled storytelling that skips all over the place and doesn't give us a chance to really dig our nails into the narrative. A disturbing, uncomfortable story from the start, it would have behooved the author to give us some storytelling action instead of endless rumination. For such a short novel it took me months to finish. Reread DRIVE if you want a book that moves.
    "It's good being liked."
James Sallis is a never-ending source of surprise as a novelist. Though his minimalist prose style - concise, compressed, clean, and incisive - does not change, and his subject matter always focuses on the darkest aspects of life, his approach to his subjects has varied widely, from Southern Gothic in the John Turner Trilogy, to the darkest and most violent noir in Drive and Driven. Thematically, he always considers how people deal with the unexpected horrors which can turn their lives upside down. While this novel deals with themes that Sallis has been developing for many years, it also represents a new metaphorical, even allegorical, approach to story-telling.
Using the point of view of a female for the first time, and setting the story in a chaotic near future, he creates a history for main character Jenny Rowan which is less boldly realistic than we are accustomed to with Sallis.

    Publisher's Summary:
With eloquence and wit, Wayne Hoffman explores the unlikely camaraderie between a young Jewish man and an Orthodox rabbi, in this rich, insightful novel about love, honesty, faith, and belonging. In Yiddish, there is a word for it: bashert - the person you are fated to meet. Twenty-something Benji Steiner views the concept with skepticism. But the elderly rabbi who stumbles into Benji's office one day has no such doubts. Jacob Zuckerman's late wife, Sophie, was his bashert. And now that she's gone, Rabbi Zuckerman grapples with overwhelming grief and loneliness. Touched by the rabbi's plight, Benji becomes his helper - driving him home after work, sitting in his living room listening to stories. Their friendship baffles everyone, especially Benji's sharp-tongued, modestly observant mother. But Benji is rediscovering something he didn't know he'd lost. Yet the test of friendship, and of both men's faith, lies in the difficult truths they come to share. With each revelation, Benji learns what it means not just to be Jewish, but to be fully human - imperfect, striving, and searching for the pieces of ourselves that come only through another's acceptance.

The focused yet funny main character has a coming of age story that helps him find the interconnectedness of faith, love, friendship, and family. Hoffman finds that being Jewish is different for every Jew but in the end, if you're looking for your puzzle piece to fit, you'll find your place in the tribe. Whether you like it or not!

    Publisher's Summary:
When Benedict left home, it was maybe the first time he'd stood up to his family. It was also meant to be the last. "No contact," he said. "I'm disinvesting."
In all honesty, they weren't sorry to see him go. Ben had never had their talent, never had the family spark. When you run a city - especially the way the Macallans ran theirs - the last thing you need is a reluctant passenger.
But suddenly Ben's learning a lot, far more than his university course could ever teach him. And as his family starts to die one by one - vicious, gruesome, horrible deaths - the chief lesson is that you can't turn your back on blood. There's someone in the city with as much talent as the Macallans, and Ben's connected after all. It's there in his body, it's in his veins; and be it thick or thin, be it still pumping or leaking out, blood is very much darker than water....
    Members Reviews:
    Great book.
I love this book. I like the way the main character develops, I like the originality of the story, and how quickly it flows. And the best part is that he is the kind of guy I could root for, he is an everyday guy who develops into so much more.
    This novel is astounding!
When Ben Macallan finally left home, it was a relief for everyone. "I'm disinvesting" he told them, and did not plan to return. Ben is the odd man out in his family, the only one with no recognizable "talent." A clan that runs a city and beyond using an arsenal of magical "talents" (think small scale Mafia) doesn't need any dead weight cluttering up the scenery.
But then one of Ben's cousins is murdered, ruthlessly and painfully. Evidence suggests that the murderer also possesses magic - powerful, corrosive magic. Ben has been a decent student at university, but the chief lesson here is, you can't turn your back on family. As the murders continue, Ben notices that it is those perceived as weakest who are being picked off first. And if he doesn't figure out what's going on fast, odds are good he'll soon be a corpse himself.
This was my first book by Chaz Brenchley, but it won't be my last. The writer has enormous depth, giving us a searing portrait of a young man who has never lived among normal people, and has no idea how relationships are carried out. His family ties are shaky at best, and when breakthrough is finally achieved, and he discovers that he has an unknown form of talent, he scarcely knows what to do with it.
It's possible that a skilled reader of suspense will see where the book is going earlier than I did, but I was so caught up in the protagonist's POV I arrived at the answer when he did. This book also has horror aspects - the deaths are not soft-pedaled, and I confess to jumping over some of the details. But if you like your fantasy mixed with strong characterization and suspense, with a dollop of genuine horror (and the magic may be the least of the horror, in the end) then you must try a Brenchley novel!
I discovered this as an ebook at Book View Café.
    Really good
Ben Macallan is a university student who has been trying to keep away from the Macallan criminal family. Partly because he doesnt have any of their magical talent but also because he lacks self esteem.

Twenty-one-year-old narcoleptic Angel Duet knows her father harbors secrets. He loves and protects her, but his suspicious refusal to discuss her mother's death drives Angel to worship an image created from the little history she does have: her father's sketchy stories and her mother's treasured photography, studies of clouds that have hung in the their foyer for more than 20 years.

As she struggles to uncover the past and gain control over the narcolepsy that often fogs her world, Angel descends into a dizzying realm of drugs, adultery, and confused desire that further obscures reality.

Don't let reality put you off of this good read
Life is hard when your mother dies when you're a baby. Life is hard when nearly everybody thinks you're weird. life is hard when your dad moves his lady into your house, and she is the hag from hell. But when you have narcolepsy, it's all worse. Nobody wants to believe you. It seems that nobody really loves you, and you go on to make the kinds of mistakes that people without narcolepsy make. Compassionately written, but real, not soupy. Think of this as a wake-up call.
RR shows how good an audio performer can be when fully engaged in the work being interpreted. Congratulations on a good pairing of story and audio performer.
Thanks to AudioBook Blast for this gifting
    pleasant surprise
What did you love best about Aberrations?
I really liked the story but I think that the narrator's performance truly brought it to life.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I think that its a tie between Tim and Mac. Both of them were always there for Angel regardless of the situation. Mac was steadfast and dependable. Tim was the funny, easy going and realistic. They were so different from each other but they each had their own endearing qualities.
What about Rebecca Robertss performance did you like?
I loved how Rebecca Roberts brought Angel's character to life. She really captured her essence and southern charm. Every emotion Angel felt was conveyed so precisely through Rebecca's performance. It added a whole new level to the book.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I didn't listen to it in one sitting but I probably could have if I had the time. The pace was good and I kept wanting to know what was going to happen next.
    Any additional comments?
I thought this was a really unique premise for a novel and I liked it. Learning about Angel's narcolepsy was fascinating.
This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review. It is unbiased and my own opinion.
    Beautiful narration
Would you listen to Aberrations again? Why?
No. I was a bit confused by this one. The book is beautifully written and the characters are quirky and well drawn. But somehow the story never quite grabbed me.

    Publisher's Summary:
Sex is forbidden at the Dasgupta Institute, the Buddhist retreat where Beth Marriot has taken refuge, and that's a big advantage. Beth has been working as a server, assisting in the kitchen and helping out - discreetly, so the meditators aren't disturbed. The meditators are making big sacrifices to come here and change their lives. So the servers must observe the rules, and silence and separation of the sexes are chief among them.
But Beth is fighting demons. She came here at a crossroads in her life, caught between an older lover who wouldn't choose her and a young one who wants to marry her, and she may have caused another man's death when she risked her own life swimming out to sea in a gale. A singer in a band, vital and impulsive, fleshy and sexy, she has been a rebel and a provocateur. And now, conflicted and wandering, she stumbles on a diary in the men's dorm and cannot keep away from it, or the man who wrote it. At the same time, desiring - all too hard - to achieve the inner peace that Buddhist practice promises, she yearns for the example set by the slim, silent, white-clad teacher Mi Nu, and maybe yearns for something more.
Comic and poignant at the same time, swiftly paced and completely engaging, Sex Is Forbidden is an entertaining novel about two profoundly different attitudes to life, and Beth - our narrator - is a character to be savored.
    Editorial Reviews:
Beth Marriot, a rebellious, sexy singer, is at an in-between moment in her life: in between two men, specifically, one older, and one younger. Which is why she takes some time away for herself in a serving job at the Dasgupta Institute, a serene Buddhist retreat where sex is strictly forbidden. But somehow, Beth finds temptation in a man's revealing diary, and ends up having to choose between physical fulfillment - and inner peace. Suzanne Heathcote's saucy vocal performance adds some vital sizzle, making this fun, entertaining story a provocative listen.

    A journey in noble silence
Would you consider the audio edition of Sex is Forbidden to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version
What did you like best about this story?
It's an accurate portrayal of the experience of noble silence. The protagonist (the book is in the first person) has been on retreat longer than I ever have, and she's more neurotic than I, but her flights of fancy and experiences confronting the fetters and hindrances are all told faithfully, exactly the way they happen. The particulars are different, but they are exactly the way they happen. It's really well-told!
What does Suzanne Heathcote bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I haven't read the book, so it's hard to say, but she is very strong at portraying the internal world of a yogi/retreatant. She understands the whimsy and the humor and the desperation that are equal parts of the process of confronting the self and the mind when you're observing noble silence. It's a thoroughly convincing performance.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It would have been a very long sitting, but I did enjoy coming back to it at every opportunity.
    Any additional comments?
All around fine performance and strong story. The ending was disappointing for me, but the rest of it made up for it.

Profoundly psychoanalytic, but that is woven into entirely plausible, dreadful characters, convey a historical moment and class too. The whole Melrose series excellent, this one crowns them for virtuosity of writing and narrative arc. Fantastically well read here.
