It was an original storyline, with some great twists and turns, but the continual jokey one-liners, though witty, were irritating and getting in the way of the action and characters sometimes.

Sadly the world is not on an Amish honor system.

A famous Broadway play title is, "Stop The World, I want to Get Off !". There is humor within the production, and also event after event, after event that is either springboard to tragedy or the next success. It was successful because people recognized the "almost happened to me" of the story. It is not permission for the world to be difficult. It is a story of making it through.

With grit, humor, determination, and sometimes an anger management (preferable more so than a nervous breakdown), the fictional character bites the bullets, earns champagne, survives the daily running of the gauntlet sometimes the status quo, and raises a family hopefully who will not need to suffer such a world, but a family capable of making it through.

Having ideals and goals better than what sometimes seems to call the shots is part of getting through instead of getting stuck. It's tough to live in a tough world without getting scars. Standing up and carrying on just one more time than being knocked down is being able to make it.

It's worth the read. Won't be "everyone's" cup of tea. Complex, look for the love story. Be glad nice people are nice.

Whiny Millennial makes the rest of us look bad

I'm not even going to go into how badly I wanted to strangle the reader of this audio book because it'd be so long, I'm sure most people would just skip reading this review. I'll just stick to how the author spent the whole book humble-bragging about how big of a whiny little momma's boy he is. There's nothing wrong with showing vulnerability, but when you spend what seemed like it'd be a whole page explaining why your girlfriend HAS to hold your hand, you're basically putting it out there that you have the mentality of a toddler. This dude handles female interaction like an emo middle schooler that masturbates to granny porn 5 times a day. His attempt at "alt-lit" was futile because I couldn't get past the fact that he's been handed everything in his life, which he makes it a priority to point out to the reader any chance he gets, yet he tries to make the reader feel bad for him while he bitches and moans his way through life in New York drinking Bud Light Limes.

Slooooooow!

What disappointed you about The Emperor Waltz?

I have returned this book as it failed to reach the level I expected from the very glowing reviews! 3 very different stories from different periods, with no apparent link! I have kept on with it in the hope that it would become clearer, but am too bored now! I found the male narrator's style extremely irritating and quite tedious too. suspect this wouldn't have helped to move the story along.

A real thriller that kept my attention all throughout the audiobook from beginning to the end. Great story and great narrator.

If Lovin' This Book Is Wrong ...

What did you love best about The Wrong Man?

The story is a thriller drawn out through a week in Sam's life. And while it seems at first there are key moments when he could have gone down one path to avoid problems or set things right, he makes one bad decision after the next. And the kicker is that you find yourself thinking you'd likely make the same dumb moves, too. I suppose that is how some of the best noir works, isn't it?

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Wrong Man?

The most memorable scenes for me happen late in the book, and I'm not about to spoil what is a great piece about reluctant revenge. Early on, however, there is a scene where Sam is driving an old friend home from a party only to find out the little sleazeball stole a big bag of weed from the host. If that's not bad enough, the cops roll up on 'em and set off a series of events that send Sam's life plummeting right into the abyss. It's a great scene and sets the stakes in expert fashion.

What about Robert Neil DeVoes performance did you like?

Whether playing the exasperated and desperate Sam, his gruff and grizzled cousin Tommy, his stoner friend that dragged him into the mess, or the gang of thugs that terrorize Sam in the run of a week, Robert did one heckuva job keeping the pace moving along and offering unique and believable voices for each character. There were a couple moments where I had to remind myself that this was one guy and not an ensemble cast. He's that good and a narrator I'll have to watch out for in the future. An exemplary talent, much like Matthew Louis in the writing department.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could have I would have. There was never a dull moment and I could have been quite happy spending four hours or so of doing nothing but getting swept up in the story.

Any additional comments?

The book feels violent, but there's actually very little of the violence depicted on the page. When it does happen though, watch out.

There be giants in the land of men

Miles Cobett and I have been Facebook friends for a few years. I have been meaning to read Champion for quite awhile, but never got around to it. I should not have waited. This was an engrossing read. I would recommend it to anyone young or old looking for a good story.

Roman is flawless in every way. He's a larger than life earthborn version of Superman. For us mere mortals with failings he is hard to relate to. On the other hand Superman has always been my favorite comic book hero. If you love Superman you will love Roman Lefthanded Losinski.

Roman "Left Handed" Losinski is a man who is determined to be the "Champion". This little book is an easy read. After I read it to myself I read it aloud to my 11 year old granddaughter, even though she reads well herself. I've always enjoyed reading to my sons and daughters, and their friends over the years. This book lends itself to the type of reading aloud I like to do. Cobbett writes in a descriptive manner and you will feel many strong emotions as Roman works with his trainers and alone to become "Champion". As Roman and his team travel from the desert to the mountains to train, Cobbett paints a word picture of the places that make you feel as if you're there. And you'll get to know each of the characters as Cobbett brings out each individuals' personality, passion, and emotions. There's romance and a surprise ending, too ! ! !

This is a book I'm glad I ordered and read

This is a book I'm glad I ordered and read. It has many valuable life lessons such as virtue, persistence, and the importance of true friendships. In a way, it is like nothing I have quite read before (and that is meant in a good way). As stated elsewhere, all ages can find something which resonates here, which is no easy feat for an author to accomplish. In addition, through life experiences, one could come back to this book somewhat later in time, and still find something new and interesting and of merit. I look forward to applying many of these lessons to my own life.

A skillfully written family book!

Great book! Very well-written, engaging, substantive. Reminds me of the books I used to love to read when I was young during the summer at our cabin, the sort of book one can get lost in thanks to a gripping plot and vivid writing. Two thumbs up!

Miles Cobbett can WRITE!

Sometimes books take a while to get into... So many stories take a long time to get into. This one did not. It jumps from the get go. the protagonist says, "hell no." The story says, "Yeah so!" and the tale is told with a sick flow. Do yourself a favor and click "Yo!"

A ponerle pilas pero vale la pena

El manejo del lenguaje es lo mejor del libro. Frases increíbles, y la sensación de estar flotando entre letras y palabras que se encuentran y remontan vuelo por lugares increiblemente poéticos. La trama no me gustó tanto. Empieza bien, me gusta el planteo inicial, los personajes, pero después no me engancha el desarrollo, poco verosímil incluso en su universo loco, si bien lo seguí. me pareció que a la trama le faltaba algo más contundente. esperaba otra cosa, pero en todo momento el manejo del lenguaje hizo que valiera la pena. y me sigue interesando el autor, voy a probar con El Pasado que todos dicen que está muy bueno.

The Handler

A devoted reader doesn't often find a book that keeps their attention like this one does. It will keep you reading until the early morning hours. The Handler also keeps the reader wondering what it is in a person that leads them to believe in a false Messiah long after finishing this book.

Meh

I felt no enthusiasm for picking it up or putting it down and most of it was forgettable, predictable drama in a snake cult. It seemed dull despite the character of a spooky snake guy - but right on schedule, the heroine kept getting assaulted and saved. The organization of the cult itself was not presented very clearly, which was what I hoped would satisfy my curiosity. This might be a good beach book.

captivating and attention commanding!

What a well-written story by Cady. It sucks you in from the get-go and doesn't let up. Being from the area that the story is set in, everything was described just as it is in real life, which made things that much more fun to read about. I can't wait to read the sequel, "Fatal Option"!

Gripping Books

I really enjoyed book 1 and about to start book 2. The book are very good. I am in the Chattanooga, TN area and that makes the book more exciting for me. It's well done and it's done by a local. I am very glad I found them.

Let's Get Drunk and Do Drugs Off the Coast of Ohio this Summer

Outside In is Doug Cooper's award winning debut novel and he definitely has a nice writing style. His tone and approach to his story, and the themes which I'll discuss in a bit, reminded me a lot of Brett Easton Ellis.

Brad, a high school math teacher, loses his job after the strange death of one of his students and he decides to go to Put-In-Bay Island in Lake Erie to spend the summer. Cooper obviously has a personal connection to this place because an island off the coast of Ohio is not a place I'd probably think of to spend my summer vacation no matter how depressed I was feeling about the loss of my job.

Brad immediately gets a job in a bar and befriends some of the other young island goers. What follows is pages of drunken nights, drug abuse, sex, biking, and swimming divided by Brad's inner dialogue about his constant need to find himself. And that's about all that happens until you are about 80% of the way through the book when Brad finally steps outside of his reckless comfort zone. Things get even better in the last pages of the book when a friend disappears. Sadly, I wish that had happened earlier.

Because of the constant parade of doing shots in the bar or getting drunk at the winery or doing coke and mushrooms, I was really turned off by the characters and almost gave up on this book several times. In fact, I couldn't connect with anyone, not even Brad until the very end. I couldn't even remember the characters' names half the time!

Cooper might be writing about his own glory days here and that's fine. I just wish the real physical and emotional conflicts would have come earlier in the story.
