Find out for yourself

Chose this book because I like both the narrators and I was curious to see if this could keep my attention. This is a good pick, funny, sad, dealing with some of the big questions of life. Enjoy.

Would you listen to Who Is Tom Ditto again? Why?

Again and again and again......this book is very entertaining and has a twist that is fascinating. I LOVE the style of the author and the narrator. I am wild about the expertise of Kobna Holdbrook Smith in delivering all his expertise and art in a truly magnificent rendition of personalities..his ability to do many other voices give one the feeling of real separation...like listening to a play.

Kobna Holdbrook Smith is an excellent narrator. Cant get enough of him! Listened to the London River series and just long for him to read us more and more. Rarely have I ever enjoyed a narration so much. I hope he does more and more narrations because I would read the books just to be with his voice and characterisations.

Surprising, relatable, and excellently narrated.

The story was intriguing and the characters well-developed - I really cared about them by the end. As someone in her late twenties who lives in London there were parts of the tale that resonated with me particularly. I feel that there's this myth that our parents generation had their life sorted out by 30. As it approaches it can feel like you're not going where you thought or that you're living someone else's dreams and ideals - whether that someone was once you or not. It was interesting to explore that and how the characters change in response to the absurd and the pointedly not.

I chose this because I really enjoyed Kobna-Holdbrook Smith's narration in the Rivers of London series. He is brilliant. I was worried that I would get character bleed - having associated the narrator with the aforementioned 5 books (that I've listened to multiple times each).

Two Parisian shrinks fall into a hot pit of emotional upheaval

Two Parisian shrinks -- Anna, 40-something with a couple of kids and an eminent physician husband, and Thomas, 40-something but still single following the suicide of a young love -- are about to leave the cool realm of the psychoanalyst's chair and fall into a hot pit of emotional upheaval that shatters their happy lives. Anna falls for Yves, a celebrated and single writer, while Thomas falls for Louise, a human-rights lawyer with a couple of kids and an eminent scientist husband. In spare yet evocative prose, Le Tellier recounts the affairs from start to finish -- the early trysts, the introductions to the children, the cuckold's discoveries and civilized attempts to confront the other man. Le Tellier is an experimental writer, interested in finding new ways to tell stories, and I did not find these characters emotionally engaging. But while emotional engagement is necessary to make me passionate about a novel, skillful writing also draws me in, and Le Tellier is a skillful writer. The paired affairs begin similarly -- married women pursued by unmarried men -- but end quite differently, and while the reader who follows their trajectories through this book won't be thrilled as the pages pass, most will be satisfied when they reach the end.

Playful, Fun, French Love Story

This is a book I continue to recommend. The novel is fast-reading, profound, moving, intriguing, amusing, and touching all at once. The comparison to Bob and Carol, Ted and Alice is a good one. Readers who admire originality, French lifestyle, creativity, and are open about love and sex will enjoy this novel. It is whimsical yet real at the same time. The four characters in the novel are all interesting and none stand out significantly over the others. The story shifts from four points of view (which I love) and each deepens the overall story of Love. There are parts of this book which are unforgettable, particularly the 40 or so reasons one character cites loving another character. Highly recommended for those who love life and want to read about others who also love life and choose to live life to the fullest.

enjoyable but a bit o' summat and nowt

I just couldn't get Alan Titchmarsh's face out of my mind when listening to this book. I couldn't separate his voice from gardening and chat shows to take the delivery of this story seriously. If you are going to attempt a Scottish accent for one Scottish person surely every Scot should have a Scottish accent? I think he overuses archaic language alongside current vernacular to no good effect. If I was writing his report card I would say "Tries too hard". He needs to decide what mode of language he wants to use and not overfill his book with big words and old-fashioned terms.

A story of big castles, family trials and tribulations and peace in the end. I listened to it all but was not hooked.

I think it may have been better with a different narrator.

Bring me home

Brilliant, this is up to Alan's usual standard. With his narration this helps you to be absorbed into the story.

Loved the story. Bought to life by the author and narrator of the incredibly talented Alan Titchmarsh. A well told story. Through decades of this family and old school friend's life. Sadness and happiness as true to life as it can be.

good writing and good story-telling

Goli Taraghi is a marvelous story teller. She creates a tapestry with different stories and beautiful threads. Each character gets the center stage in different stories. Taraghiâs book offers readers a chance to read an author who has maintained her popularity in Iran for nearly four decades â an era spanning revolution, war and diaspora. Her accessible prose straddles the boundary between memoir and fiction, documenting life in Iran and in exile.

Taraghiâs work, with its focus on contemporary life as lived by a range of quixotic characters, offers not only a portrait of her homeland but a chance for readers to explore their own alternate selves. I love good writing and good story-telling. This book has both.

What an amazing writer!

sad and unsettling book

Interesting, sad and unsettling book. Provides a unique view into the Iranian revolution and its impact on people's lives and relationships. A very good read for those who have an interest in Iran.

Slow start, but got better

This was a collection of short stories that took place in/around the Iranian revolution. I found the stories in the second half of the book more enjoyable than the first half. It started very slowly for me, but I had read such good things about the book that I kept going, hoping the next story would better catch my attention. And eventually, they did! I liked the story about the Flowers of Shiraz, about the flight to Tehran and the ping pong match, Delbar and the Little Monkey, and of course, about the Pomegranate Lady. I found the topics very interesting, describing life around that period from so many different perspectives.

A black comical sequel to peculiar opener

If you could sum up Vacant Possession in three words, what would they be?

I disagree with the previous review which suggested the ending ruined the whole tale: the ending leaves the dangling threads exactly where they should be - outrageously weird - it's the denouement of a layered and blackly hilarious sequel.Complex. Witty. Clever.A wonderful turn of phrase - I wish I had it in print so that I could more easily reread & savour some of those pithy, crafted sentences.Bravo.A gem.

Fabulous follow up but disappointing ending

Great following on from Every Day is Mother's Day, but was left very disappointed by the ending. It has almost made me wish I hadn't invested the time and emotional energy into listening to the two books.

A depressing story

Although well written, I would not have chosen this had I known what a bleak storyline was about to unfold. Mental illness abounds in almost every character.
