Its a win-win for teachers and kids...!
This is a wonderful chapter book, and it is a gold mine for educators. Its a humorous story that cleverly educates at the same time. You will find inside: comparing sizes, increases vocabulary, talks about shapes, inspires the imagination, and much more...! My son laughed out loud reading this book. It is full of humor, ideas, and left my son wanting more to read. 5 stars!!!! I hope to see more books from Doreen Cronin. We can't wait to see what other misadventures The Chicken Squad can get themselves into.
Just as crazy on their own
This is a spin-off of the J. J. Tully series. The chicks now have their own series. The chicks get their first client, a squirrel. I loved how Sugar sees the clues differently than the others. J. J. has to come to the rescue but the chicks are fun as they solve their first mystery despite the clues. Don't let the facts stand in the way. This is a wonderful series for beginning readers.
Interesting starter 'chapter book' for beginning reader
Interesting characters, with some challenge provided by the narration through which the story is told. It was a very good starter 'chapter book' for my son to read to me.
    Five Stars
Great books! So funny! My 7 (almost 8) yr old LOVES them!
    Five Stars

An introduction to the lives of 6 Great Composers with music!
This is a delightful audible book on the lives of 6 famous composers for grades 3-6. Along with a biography of the artist there are samples of the composers works to introduce young people to classical music.
    The composers are:1.Vivaldi
    2.Bach
    3.Mozart
    4.Beethoven
    5.Dvorak
    6.Shostakovich
Each section explains the challenges and eccentricities of the famous composer and it will keep children entertained. Marin Alsop does a wonderful job of narrating along with the occasional sound effects thrown in for good measure.
I recently took a classical music course for adults and it awoke in me a new love of classical music and I believe this book could do the same for young people.
    Very Interesting!
My 10-year-old son LOVES listening to these CDs, and I have to admit that my husband and I both enjoy them as well. Many hours in the car have been pleasant because my son is engaged in listening. The accounts of each composer are tastefully done and give quite a bit of interesting detail into the composer's life and personality. We have checked them out from our library many times and my son would now like us to purchase them because he enjoys listening to them so much. I only wish they would make more as there are many more composers still to study.
Embarrassingly bad, even for a seven-year old
This is clearly a presentation intended for children, but it is not indicated what age group is being targeted. The narration assumes no sophistication on the part of the listener, nor does it attempt to broaden or encourage more focused listening skills on the part of the child. Among the musical selections played are the most un-Shostakovichian work of the composer's, the variations on "Tea for Two" and the Romance from the film Gadfly, evidently in an attempt to sweeten the presentation. A portion of the Second Piano Concerto is played, and then the child is asked if the quote of the song, "What Do We Do With A Drunken Sailor" was heard in the score. Why in the world would a child be familiar with this somewhat esoteric World War II era song? A recording of the song outside its compositional context should have been played, which would have made the concerto example more meaningful. But this opportunity was overlooked. At the end of the presentation, it is pointed out that one of Shostakovich's songs, "Motherland Hears", was the first to be sung in space. Fine. But we never hear a note of the song. Instead, a Russian translation of some of its verses is presented. One has to wonder how this translation would benefit a child's understanding of the music of Shostakovich. It again points up the lack of thought that went into this hastily assembled, ultimately condescending script.

    A nice book for "pre-tweens"
As a father of a daughter just over two years old, I am well-acquainted with books in her age range. And we've all heard about books and movies targeting "tweens" and their apparently increasing buying power. I think this book falls directly in the middle of those age ranges.
I see this book as being a good example of something a pre-tween would enjoy. The writing is still jaunty with good rhythm and rhymes, but the content is more...grown-up than something involving baby farm animals, nursery rhymes, or monkeys.
The premise is straightforward -- you have talent and you can do anything with it. It might even seem overly simple to some kids and/or parents. But I think making the idea of one's talents into something tangible (a machine) can be a powerful symbol for a child in this book's intended audience.
A solid title that will enrich any book shelf.

There lived an older couple with one son, Martin. When the husband died, he left behind only a small amount of money for his wife and Martin. Finding themselves without food, the wife, although she had wanted to keep the money for a rainy day, sent Martin into town with half of their money to buy grain for a year. When he walked into town, he found a dog that had been tied up and was being beaten for eating a pig of the butcher. Martin, unable to stand watching the dog be beat, offered to purchase the dog and spent all the money allotted for grain on the stag-hound. His mother was very angry and sent him back the next day with the rest of the money to buy the grain.
When Martin entered town, he saw a man dragging a cat by a string heading off to drown the creature. Martin offered to purchase the cat instead and spent the rest of the family's money on the cat. Outraged, his mother kicked him out of the house and off he went with the dog and cat, Schurka and Waska. Martin worked honest labor for the next year, and then finds himself on quite an adventure after he rescues a burning damsel and takes her back to her father. From him, he receives a magical ring that seems to get him into more trouble. Luckily, he has his companions, Schurka and Waska, who remember how he once saved them, and they serve him just as faithfully.
Andrew Lang (1844-1912) was a Scottish writer who collected fairy and folk tales from various cultures and put them together in twelve volumes of tales. He was noted for taking the tales from as many original sources as possible, keeping the fairy tales close to their intended meanings.
