Title: Farley's Five and Dime (Volume 1)

Author: Renee Riva

Narrator: Debbie Haroun

Format: Unabridged

Length: 2 hrs and 31 mins

Language: English

Release date: 12-29-11

Publisher: StoneHouse Ink

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes

Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10

Publisher's Summary:

Farley's Five-and-Dime plops the reader into a fun, folksy, small town setting, with a touch of romance, humor, and sweet southern charm. Set in the small town of Hog Eye Holler, Kentucky, in the 1950 s. Kids, and the young at heart alike, will enjoy meeting 11-year-old Mazie May Farley; a cross between Pippi Longstocking and Caddie Woodlawn. The high spirited, red-headed whirlwind who helps her family run the local Five-and Dime, has her sights on the popular town hunk-a-hunk, Billy Ray Baxter. In her comical, self-defeating schemes to snag Billy Ray away from Emma Jean Jacobs, Mazie is taken by surprise at the outcome of her high jinx attempts. When Billy fails to fall for Mazie s numerous attempts to get him to invite her to the long anticipated Sweetheart Waltz, she raises the stakes higher and higher. Chaos and calamity ensue. The story ends on a note of sweet serendipity but may not be exactly what Mazie was shooting for. Sometimes life has a way of surprising us when we are busy making other plans.

And the winner is . . .

Any book that can both make me laugh and get misty is a winner. As a small-town teenager in the 1950s, this title made me feel like I had "gone home," thanks to Mazie May. Home to a world of unlocked doors and community concern (AKA nosiness).

Renee Riva hooked me with the first sentence of her Preface, "When I was a kid we owned a store." I read the book in one setting and put it on my "keeper" shelf to be read again and again. A breath of fresh air from Hog Eye Holler, Kentucky. I was delighted when Renee continued the story with the sequel, Summer of the Carousel, with another Mazie May book to follow.

Delightful

What a truly delightful book. A peak into the life of 11 year old Mazie May Farley in 1958. I laughed my way through so many of her capers. Small town life, family business, fun and laughter. Highly recommend.

I receive complimentary books for review from publishers, publicists, and/or authors. I am not required to write positive reviews. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's16CFR, Part 255.

Another Adorable and Charming Renee Riva Novel!

I really love reading a book that just warms the heart. I am still glowing and cozy warm after reading `Farley's Five and Dime: A Dime Store Novel' by Renée Riva!

Here is the synopsis of this wonderfully entertaining book:

A Charming Waltz Down Memory Lane. "There was nothing real special `bout Farley's Five-and-Dime except that I was a Farley. That, and my family lived up above the store in what we called The Loft. And my daddy built a secret two-story slide beside the back staircase that went from The Loft right down into the store - which came in quite handy when my brother, Sammy and me were in need of a midnight snack..."

What more could an eleven year old girl who worked the soda fountain in a 1950's five-and-dime store possibly want?

Nothin' much...until the town of Hog Eye Holler announces their annual Valentine's Day Sweetheart Waltz.

In Episode III, The Star-Fighters, under attack from pink goblins and Molgotha, a drooling giant octopod, must save a girl locked in a "pink palace." ~~ Face to face with Molgotha! ~~

This, the third and final book in the series, starts with Beamer dreaming. His overactive imagination is in overdrive whilst he dreams! Everything is pink! Have to admit that I thought the beginning of this book was a little silly but as the story progresses it begins to make sense.

With his two friends, Scilla and Ghoulie, Beamer heads to drop some schoolwork off to a "homeschooled" girl in their neighborhood. The house is like a candy house, very pink and quite incredible. The children are suspicious about the lady who opens the door. Why don't they see the girl? Is she in danger like Solomon Parker was in the previous book? Sadly the use of the word 'homeschooled' here feeds into the old misconception/gives the impressions that all homeschooled children are weird or hiding something which we know is not true. Once again, as the story progresses, the situation becomes clear but it leaves a bad taste in the mouth to start with!

This encounter is followed by a very, very pink adventure in the tree ship. When the kids return and go to "rescue" the girl what do they discover? Around the same time Scilla's stepbrother, Dashiell, arrives on the scene. He is NOT a nice boy getting Scilla into all sorts of trouble. Payback will come!

In this story we see the children again showing compassion despite the difficulties. They also keep their word/promise which is really important for readers to read and see played out. Having now read the complete trilogy, we would recommend this series. We read it as a read-aloud to our 13, 10 and 7 year olds and they LOVED it. It is Christian based but I personally thought it was a little weak in that area however what is present is good. The three children have some amazing adventures and help change several people's lives for the better. I would have LOVED to have had an update on Jack in this book but alas there was none. We purchased this for our Kindle. We were not required to write a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz

Spiders, spaceships and the color pink

This time the adventures for Beamer, Scilla, and Ghoulie start when they are asked by their school teachers to deliver some school supplies to a house in the neighborhood. Of course this is no ordinary house. It's pink--everything around the house, everything inside the house--except the things made of glass.

Critic Reviews:

"Pedro Pablo Sacristan is back with yet another collection of Spanish stories for children, translated into English. And just in time for the holidays, this collection includes 12 whimsical stories with a Christmas theme. This is my third Sacristan anthology and I have to say that I have enjoyed them all very much. Sacristans stories are written in a simple style that children will love. And parents will love the important life lessons their children will gain from these tales.... Handling the narration duties for Sacristans stories once again is the husband and wife team of Joe Bevilacqua and Lorie Kellogg. Youll enjoy Joe and Lorie as they create literally dozens of silly and engaging voices that bring the stories to life. Your kids will feel right at home with the cartoon-style characterizations. Spanish Christmas Stories for Children is just the thing to occupy your young ones on a rainy (or snowy) afternoon. Better yet, sit down and listen along with them. You wont regret spending some time with them, and you wont regret these stories either. Its fun for the whole family." (Steven Brandt, audiobook-heaven.com)

Let me walk you through a few of my favorites from this collection:

In The Best Choice, a little boy learns that presents are fun, but sometimes they can distract us from the really important things in life.

In The Little Christmas Star, the angels must choose one special star to illuminate a very special event that is taking place on Earth.
