"A truly beautiful book. A treasure." (Michael Foreman, two-time winner of the Kate Greenaway Award and writer illustrator of more than 300 titles)
"This is an interesting collection of unfamiliar stories from the East, new and fresh and wonderful to find. This is not just a children's book. I think everyone should have a copy." (Tony West, The Lion & Unicorn Bookshop Independent Bookseller of the Year - British Book Industry Awards)

    Not bad, parental guidance suggested.
In ancient times, before mankind had a written language, knowledge was passed from generation to generation in the form of verbal stories. The stories were entertaining but were also meant to educate the younger generation about the ways of the world. Many of those stories, or at least the style itself, survive to this day in the form of fables from the likes of Aesop and Hans Christian Andersen.
In his introduction John Jackson discusses the ancient tradition of storytelling, explaining that the stories often"made a point, usually a moral point about human behavior." Some of Jackson's stories have morals, lessons about being a good neighbor or how true beauty lies within, or warning us of the dangers of being greedy or boastful. And some of his stories don't seem to have a moral at all, or the moral eludes me. Moral or not, Jackson's stories are rich and entertaining. They provide tantalizing glimpses into the daily life of an exotic part of our world that many of us will never have the opportunity to experience first-hand.
In all there are thirteen stories in this collection including:
    The Hole In the Roof
    The Two Neighbors
    Lovely One
    The Kitchkinni
    The Charm
    The North Star
The Cold Side of the Moon
    Chhepu
    The End of the World
    The Turtle and the Geese
    The Magic Goat
    The Sparrow's Breakfast
    Vijaya
This collection of stories is undoubtedly aimed at children, but I'm not sure all of them are appropriate for the very young. The Hole In The Roof features a farmer who is eaten by a giant who is in turn killed by the farmer's wife, and The Charm details a string of murders as it teaches us a lesson about greed. Parental discretion is advised.
I think the real strength of Tales For Great Grandchildren lies in the narration. Author John Jackson narrated the stories himself, and while authors rarely make good narrators, Jackson is one exception that proves the rule. He speaks with a mild British accent and his voice is very full and rich. He actually reminded me a bit of Rob Inglis, who narrated Tolkien's audiobooks, only perhaps without the classical training that Inglis obviously had. All technicalities aside, Jackson's voice is very pleasant to listen to and made these stories that much more enjoyable.

While presented as being for children from 7 - 12, this is the perfect collection to share with children of all ages: providing a perfect series of quiet moments, or relaxing before nap or sleep.

    Frankenstein's monster meets Toffee
My boys (aged 5 and 7) weren't entirely sure what to make of this story. It has some truly amazing images - like flocks of chocolate bars walking down the street by themselves at night - but it also has a lot of sadness in.
The male Victorian historical lead was neglected as a child. The (SPOILER ALERT) Toffee Monster struggles to be accepted then or now. The slightly bonkers adults are all nursing some kind of internal trauma.
It works out alright in the end of course and Russell Boulter's voice is wonderful, but some of it is slightly uncomfortable listening. I'd probably chalk this one down for ages 6 or 7 and older. A lot going on.

    Critic Reviews:
"Dazzling, chilling, breathtaking. Maggot Moon is, quite simply, a perfect book." (Meg Rosoff, award-winning author of How I Live Now)
    Members Reviews:
A brilliant, deeply moving tale very well told
This audiobook brought tears to my eyes more than once, and not because it would be overly sentimental, but quite the opposite. The text felt very honest and true, and was told in a realistic no-nonsense manner. Both facts made the relatively small moments of kindness and devotion shine out brilliantly against the dark background of this alternative reality. A strong vote against intolerance and discrimination. Most highly recommended.
    A thought provoking tale
Would you listen to Maggot Moon again? Why?
I don't know if I'd listen again because it was so emotionally taxing; but it was a powerful story ringing with truths and I'm glad I listened to it.
    loved it! ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!
ABSOLUTELY Beautifully written. Loved it! Spoken and read perfectly by the narrator. 10/10.
    Lacking
This book was only okay. I came into it with quite high hopes as it had just won the Costa Children's Book Award and have been left somewhat disappointed.
The short chapters felt pointless and often annoying. They broke up whatever tension/action had been created and it just frustrated me as a reader.
The story, on the whole, was interesting but really lacked strength in the middle section so it sort of lost me. The end was great albeit a bit predictable.
So wanted this to be loved
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The book kept interest and was helpful on a long car journey but left us all wondering why we had spent the time. Standish was a great character and it was well written with a hint of mystery in every short chapter, but often led this weary reader to disappointment. Every character wasn't developed enough and it seemed a bit hap hazard - disjointed.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
It seemed to me that the relationship between Hector and the Standish was unnecessary for the plot. I couldn't fathom why it needed swearing or why the graphic violence for a children's story. It really wasn't appropriate for my kids at 8 and 11.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
I can't pick out one. There were very few "scenes". The ending in the suits was good to imagine, I guess?
Could you see Maggot Moon being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?
    No
    Any additional comments?
It seemed a want to be Orwellian story with gravitas, but it was flattened by the "fake moon landing" finale, the "our fate lies with you" Star-Wars line, and not driving the alternative universe depth until mid way through the book

Proves teenagers in America aren't lazy couch potatoes
    from Blue Jean Online
    by Truc Doan, Teen Editor
Society loves to label teenagers. Each generation is studied, packaged, and shipped out with a name. What will this generation of the new millennium eventually be called? Will it be Generation Destruction, Generation Party, or Generation Privileged? To prove that teenagers in America aren't just a bunch of lazy couch potatoes, Elizabeth Rusch has put together a collection of stories about young people who have done something to change the world for the better. These stories vary--for example, one is about a young girl who gave an intelligent speech, while another is about a boy who managed to collect hundreds of cereal boxes for the hungry.
After every story, there is a "What You Can Do" list and quotes from other young people with ideas. The common thing among all the stories (and the thing that makes each story so endearing) is that these kids did not start out wanting to change the world. They just saw something wrong and decided to fix it. After every story there is "Your Solution," a blank page where you can write how you would or could change the world.
What I found particularly inspiring about this book is that none of the kids even considered the possibility that their ideas would not work. They just knew it could be done. Some of these kids had intelligence on their side, others just plain courage. It doesn't matter, though, because in the end all of their dreams became a reality. We know because their stories are in this book.
    concrete ideas
In Generation Fix, Liz Rusch presents the reader with case studies of children who learn not only with their heads, but with their hearts and hands. These are stories of kids taking action to solve problems, provide assistance, effect change. Between case studies, Rusch lists quotes from additional children whose brief comments offer big ideas. From collecting school supplies to oil recycling and building a commemorative statue to standing up against school district policy, Generation Fix is not only an inspiration, but a motivator for change with concrete ideas for projects kids can really accomplish.
A learning experience for kids and adults!
I'm building a youth volunteering program at a volunteer center, and I would highly recommend this book to both kids and adults.
