When the inebriated body of Ronald Campbell is drowned after a car accident, his sons know it was murder; their father did not imbibe alcoholic drinks. James Campbell had been in the French Foreign Legion with Jerome and requested the services of the Chase agency.

The plot centers around a theory that the mythical King Arthur of the round table was a real figure and ruled Scotland when he died. Ronald Campbell was one of four Marshals of the Heredem Merlinum, The Heirs of Merlin charged over the centuries with protecting the King Arthur documents. If proved to be true the present heir of King Arthur would be crowned king of Scotland.

Deep research revealed history changing evidence to support the claims. An opposition group wants the evidence destroyed and that leads to several action filled confrontations.

Action scenes are well thought out.

Editing, sentence structure and character development are excellent.

The plot was interesting and had enough action to keep me interested in spite of the time devoted to discussing faux ancient archives.

I can recommend this story for history buffs and those who like the detailed references to King Arthurâs time.

Theater of the Mind!

Author Thomas Dellenbusch provided me with an ecopy of Chase: The Hunt for a King for review.

The is the second entry in the Chase series and part of the German Kopfkino series of movie length books. I'm not sure if this is a creation of Mr. Dellenbusch or if he is part of a larger concern. These are books meant to be read in about the same amount of time one would spend watching a movie. Kopfkino translates in English as "mind theater" sound familiar?

Chase: The Hunt for a King is a political/action story revolving around an upcoming vote for the independence of Scotland.

ATROCIOUS WRITING - DON"T BE FOOLED BY FIVE STAR REVIEWS

As you'll see there are very few reviews for any of Sam Millar's books and the reason is probably that serious readers of English and Irish crime noir would not give this author the time of day. "Bloodstorm" is atrocious. The writing is that of an amateur, the plot totally improbable. This book is a waste of time and money. If you want proof of just how bad Sam Millar's writing is, do not suffer the whole book as I did. Go to the last two chapters and read the dialogue between Kane and his father and the final scene between Kane and Inspector Wilson, it's appalling ! How any reader gave this book five stars is a mystery. If you want to read great writing by the cream of the crop of British and Irish crime writers, writers who Sam Millar is trying to emulate and failing, try the following authors. These are favorites with serious noir readers. You'll find myriad five star reviews for all their books written by readers that know the genre and appreciate superb writing.

Derek Raymond (factory series), Ken Bruen, Stuart Neville, Gene Kerrigan, Benjamin Black, Jonathan Dunne or Mark Dawson (Soho Noir series).

This book deserves five stars

I just finished Bloodstorm, my first Sam Millar book, and promptly ordered samples of all the others on Kindle. Bloodstorm is a sustained mystery with a strong plot and strong characters. Highly recommended.

Bloodstorm, by Sam Millar; Book 1 of his Karl Kane series

I am continuing my own crash course in noir fiction, classic and contemporary.

Reading the Prologue of Bloodstorm, I was shocked, as gang of men commit horrendous violence against a woman. I was ready to close the book and not read on.

Depiction of violence against women is a serious and controversial issue; but Millar is in not a misogynist and the violence in his books (against women or men) is central to the stories and to the emotional effects. The horror in the Prologue makes the evil REALLY EVIL, and the possibility of revenge cathartic.

In Chapter 1, detective Karl Kane appears; a likeable, non-sexist and nonviolent man. He is visited by a mysterious Mr. Munday, who wants information about a body found in the Botanic Gardens.

Later, the scene moves to a pub. A man having a beer meets a "pretty young woman." They have sex at his house, but eventually the woman pitilessly tortures and murders the man.

Two killings. Do they tie in to the events of the Prologue? The murders continue--with horrors made more grotesque by Millar's uncompromising style:
