They say your memory can't be trusted. They say your story doesn't check out. They say you were never blindfolded...starved...or imprisoned in a filthy shed like an animal. But you know it happened. And you know it can happen again.
This masterful novel of brilliantly drawn characters and harrowing suspense will shock you at every turn and force you to walk the fine line between madness and fear.
Nicci French is the pseudonym for the writing partnership of journalists Nicci Gerrard and Sean French. The couple are married and live in Suffolk. There are 11 other best-selling novels by Nicci French: The Memory Game, The Safe House, Killing Me Softly, Beneath the Skin, The Red Room, Land of the Living, Secret Smile, Catch Me When I Fall, Losing You, Until It's Over, and What to Do When Someone Dies, all published by Penguin.
    Critic Reviews:
"Land of the Living is possibly their most assured outing yet, with all the carefully crafted plotting and assiduous characterisation that has distinguished their earlier work. The basic situation is intense and immediate: Abbie Devereux wakes up and finds herself hooded and bound, with no idea of how she ended up in this terrifying state. She is tended to by a man she never sees: a man who makes the promise that he will eventually kill her 'like the others'. Abbie is forced to re-examine aspects of her identity, her career and the dying relationship she had with her boyfriend. The struggle for survival is physical and mental. If French's compelling novel owes more than a little to John Fowles' masterpiece The Collector, it is none the worse for that. And the delineation of extreme mental states has all the disturbing assurance of Patricia Highsmith." (Barry Forshaw)

    What a good book!
An interesting well thought out plot. The only criticism is that the end seemed rushed. The narrator was excellent with subtle changes in her voice and accents.all in all money well spent the first of many books by these authors that I'll invest in.
    ok
Ok not as gripping as I hoped from reading the blurb. I liked the narrator though.
Land of the living is a thoroughly gripping story.
This book did not once lack pace, which is what one expects from a Nicki French novel. The narrator is excellent: a five star all rounder.
    very good book
i really enjoyed this book well written and griping has you almost holding your berth
    Not bad at all!
Have listened to this twice, it is a good story, well read.
It made me think about every stage the main character went through.

    WOW
I love this story. Lauren, Michael, and Gary are such complex wonderful characters and the narration is just fabulous. The pros and cons of the death penalty is constantly argued in our society and this tale makes the reader face and evaluate both sides of the issue. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED...

This was a great book to listen to!A girl is kidnapped and murdered. Her killer is sent to jail and sits on death row.Our main character,an attorney, works to get prisoners with death row sentences lightened to life in prison.Soon her home life and work life are intertwined.
Rosemary Benson gives a great performance narrating this one.

A different view on violent crime
This book brought out different emotions in me. It is about the death penalty. Personally, I think the death penalty should be enforced and in a timely manner. But this review doesnt go into my own feelings.
The story was very interesting and kept me looking at my own beliefs. I thought the detail was perfect, the narrator was very good, drawing me in enough to keep listening without moving on to another book. The characters, especially the victim, could have been developed more, but the intention of the story was to show the perpetrator as someone that had a relevant story. The victims family was a determining factor in the outcome. Many convicted criminals sentence is somewhat determined by a victims statement and, for the most part, that is the way it should be.
I dont like to describe books in detail, but I would recommend this to anyone interested in crime and punishment. There is not a lot of time devoted to the courtroom. I liked this different point of view. The characters and the crime and the outcome are the important parts of the story.

    Publisher's Summary:
This New York noir tale of a saxophone-playing amateur detective takes some jazzy twists.
Saxophonist Nanette Hayes, a majestic five-foot-ten-inch Grace Jones lookalike with hot style, lives for the music of her jazz forebears. Self-taught Nan is no Charlie Parker, but she dreams big. She performs regularly - on the sidewalks of New York City. Not exactly the Village Vanguard, but it pays the bills in ways that her masters degree in French does not. Mostly Nanette just tries to stay cool in the face of the worst kinds of hardship. Recently this has taken the form of getting dumped - hard - by her live-in boyfriend, Walter.
When her normally messy life is at its epic messiest, fellow street musician Sig walks up, and - after insulting her playing and narrowly missing being hit by a bus - changes everything. Out of nowhere, sixty grand that cant possibly be legit appears in Nans sax. Suddenly she is contending with two grisly murders, a former lover who wants her back, a jazz-obsessed ex-con, and some scarifying cops who are trying to shake her down.
Equal parts tough and romantic, Nanette uses her street-musician smarts and her New York City savvy to try to save her own skin and solve a musical mystery no less a legend than Bird himself.
Rhode Island Red is the first book in the Nanette Hayes Mystery series.

    A Mystery in Jazz
This review originally published in www.lookingforagoodbook.com. Rated 4.5 of 5
What do you get when you combine a mystery with an unlikely heroine and jazz music? Rhode Island Red, a Nanette Hayes Mystery.
Nanette Hayes is a tall, intelligent, bald, African-American jazz saxophonist playing tunes on the street for whatever cash she can get. When her live-in boyfriend dumps her (again), she worries about how sheâll make ends meet. And to top it off, another street musician insults her playing. But when Nan lets another musician (Sig) flop at her place, she wakes to find him dead in her livingroom. The man may or may not have been an undercover detective. But if he was, why is there $60,000 stuffed inside her sax? the local police donât look too kindly on Nan, so she strikes out alone to find out how sheâs connected to two murders and what the strange words âRhode Island Redâ mean and she has to deal with the boyfriend who wants to get back together, and an ex-con whoâs obsessed with jazz while sheâs at it.
This is gruff and gritty in the way thatâs perfect for a novel about jazz. And it IS about jazz. It features a unique sound, with Nanette improving solo, just as a musician would. There is a rhythm to the story but there are twists and turns that come on unexpectedly but are in keeping with the tone of the story.
Iâve been looking a long time to find books that capture the spirit, the tone of a piece of music. Finding one that featured jazz is a huge bonus for me, enjoying jazz as I do. And Charlotte Carter really does capture jazz music, as a mystery story, and sheâs created a great instrument to tell her story. Nanette Hayes is intelligent but also street-wise. She works from instinct; she knows how to play them and when to deviate and try it differently. She is a literary detective version of Thelonius Monk (which is appropriate given that the chapter titles all seem to be titles of Thelonius Monk songs).

    Publisher's Summary:
Ever since a drunken one-night stand gone wrong, single mother Meredith Banks can't seem to shake Christian Morgan, the hypnotically attractive and dangerously obsessive intern from her office. It started with the late-night phone calls, the hang-ups, the unwanted visits to her row home in Detroit. Now her son, Troy, all that matters in her world, has gone missing after school.
Meredith knows Christian is behind her son's disappearance, but the cops won't help without evidence. To find her son and his psychopathic kidnapper, Meredith sets out alone into Christian's deadly world: the criminal underbelly of Detroit, a surreal nightmare of depravity, desperation, and murder. The further she steps outside the law, the less hope she has of turning back. Failure now would cost Meredith her son - but saving him may cost her soul.
Thus begins the horror-thriller trilogy So Damn Beautiful.

dark, gritty thriller w/strong female protagonist
If you are looking for a gritty, dark, kidnapping thriller set in Detroit's seediest underbelly and can handle some rough violence, then this book will keep you enthralled. The writing is tight and the case is compelling. The action and tension ramp up quick and the stakes stay high. I was disappointed to find that Meredith's search for her missing son is not solved by the end of the book but I enjoyed her motherly, strong determination to find him no matter what the personal cost. Meredith doesn't always make the smartest of decisions but she is a strong lead and a tough customer when she has to be. This book does get rough - definitely rated R.
The narration by Kate Udall is great. She really nails the emotions of Meredith as she moves from grieving and disbelieving to steely determination despite terror and abuse.
NOTE: I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
    OMG!!
I started this listening to this story and thinking I wouldn't like it but not was I ever wrong. Author A.E. Hodge has written a story that could very well be a true story. Its filled with sadness, plotting, love of a mother, determination, and so much more. The author has written a perfect story and the ending left me holding my breath. I wanted to scream, cry, and ask why. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and will be looking for the second story because there has to be one.
Narrators, Kate Udall did a great job with her telling of this story. She makes the story feel real and it's as if I could feel Meredith's anger, frustration, sadness, and grief. The narrator did a fantastic job with distinguishing each characters accent. I recommend this story to everyone who's age appropriate. I received this audio in exchange for an honest review.
    WOW
Would you consider the audio edition of So Damn Beautiful: The Lonely One (So Damn Beautiful, Book 1) to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version but I found the imagery presented by the narrator to be fantastic. It added more depth to an already great story.
What about kate udalls performance did you like?
She added depth to each character. Her use of the characteristics of speech really brought the characters to life.
    Any additional comments?
Wow! This book gave me more than I bargained for.

I love this book and had wanted to listen in one sitting, it leaves you wanting to just keep on listening to see whats going to happen next. The back story of Mastic and the legend its based on is so intriguing and the writing style keeps propelling you forward. I highly recommend this audiobook.
    Vivid and unique
Mastic is amazingly descriptive. I could see it, smell it and even taste it. It has a little bit of romance, a nice dash of paranormal, and a sprinkling of fantasy all mixed up with a heaping dose of mystery. Along with a bunch of twists and turns, you aren't really sure where things will end up until the very end.
Pamela Lorence does a wonderful job with the narration of Mastic. You can easily tell who is talking at the time, and she reads clearly with a good pace.

Awful narrator and the story spun out of control
I expected more of a mystery procedural and more of a fantasy sci-fi. The books starts in 3rd person but switches abruptly halfway through to 1st person leaving the focus characters of the first part far behind.

Will a so-called indestructible luxury hotel survive a devastating hurricane?
On an island in the Caribbean, the brand-new Samsara Resort and Spa is promoted as the world's only indestructible hotel. Samsara offers upscale guests their unique, opulent accommodations that include such technical wonders as indoor beaches with artificial sun to support the concept of disaster-proof vacations - for a price. And sometimes, it has been a price that is more than money. Disaster-proof island vacations are the marketing brainchild of the developers, who need an infusion of investor cash.
However, the creation and operation of such a fort-like grand hotel is not without its dark secrets and unfortunate development history. One man knows too much, and he's determined to find a way to spill the truth before they silence him, forever.
As an unexpected hurricane gathers speed, its imminent destruction blasts straight for the island. Now, it's time to prove the indestructible claim to investors who are trapped there, along with some formidable guests who may come in handy if things take a turn for the worse. And turn, they do! Even a lock-down during the hurricane has potential security issues for those who want to wreak their own brand of havoc.
Listeners will get to know the compelling stories of the characters: a man with a personal problem whose wife is skeptical of investing their retirement money; a family on vacation; the developers with their own greedy agenda; and more people who will come together to either survive the storm - and each other - or destroy the dream in the process.

    another survival story
Ok but to similar to a lot of post apocalypse I have read recently.
Hurricane vs. Hotel and action-packed excitement - 5 stars and 5 little beach umbrellas!
In this post-modern, loose retelling of Shakespeareâs THE TEMPEST, and with a few shades of KEY LARGO (an old Bogart-and-Bacall flick) thrown in, this novel pulls out all the stops with the cast of good and evil characters and those who are thrown into situations that force them to change their ideals and work on their dysfunctional relationships.
I enjoyed the fantasy of the ultra-luxurious hotel, which has every amenity and is touted as safe from hurricanes, or so the developers said. And of course, such foreshadowing meant that a big hurricane was on the way. Funny how the weather reports didnât come in until it was too late to leave the island.
The invited potential investors are going to ride out the hurricane in the weather-proof hotel before they decide if they want to invest their money. And the author created a hotel that can lock down almost like Fort Knox, which was darn cool. The described amenities, such as indoor beaches, also sounded quite cool.
But a mega-hotel like this one on a small, poverty-stricken island (for the locals) doesnât come without a price. In order to get the hotel speedily built in time for the seasonâs tourism and also, to drum up the big bucks from the investors, a few lives had to be sacrificed along the way and as expected, the sea tells no tales. Or does it?
It was man vs. man, man vs. Nature, man vs. woman, and also good vs. evil.
