    Excellent Story!
I really enjoyed Quincannon! It is an excellent combination of a western and detective story. It is the introduction of the characters of John Quincannon and Sabina Carpenter who are the partners in a detective agency set in San Francisco in the 1890s. It tells how John and Sabina met.
I highly recommend this book and the Quincannon/Carpenter series!
Slick entertainment from the master professional
Quincannon is packaged as a Western ,which given its setting and period, namely Idaho in the 1880's and early 1890's ,is understandable but it also works as a crime novel cum spy story as its hero ,John Quincannon ,is a US secret service agent on an undercover mission .He is a deeply troubled man ,having taken refuge from his guilt at accidently killing a pregnant woman in Virginia City some years previously by means of hitting the bottle big time .He still retains the confidence of his superior in the San Francisco area and is chosen for an assignment in Silver City ,Idaho where a counterfeit currency gang is operating .The sole clue is a note found clutched in the hands of a murdered informer ,saying simply "Whistling Dixon".Dixon is a simple cowjhand who is murdered soon after Quincannon's arrival in Silver City. The unravelling of the mystery is told in a brisk and propulsive prose and involves ,among other things an opium den ,a siege of a deserted mine and an enigmatic female named Sabina .
This is a rattling good read for lovers of the Western and devotees of the crime and spy yarns who are looking for something a bit unusual in terms of time and setting for those genres .Pronzini is a master professional and skilled storytelller and his gifts are well in evidence in this slick and enjoyable tale
I've been too busy to think about whiskey."
"He belonged to no part of society, not anymore. He was a man alone, who
answered to no one on this earth, not even the United States
Government;who would answer only to God."
It wasn't the author's name or even the title that attracted me to this book;because, quite frankly they were both unfamiliar to me. I read a lot of Westerns, and particularly like some of the great artwork on the covers.

Doch was verschweigt sie selbst?

    Title: Crane
    Author: James Pattinson

    Release date: 01-25-17
    Publisher: Soundings
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Paul Crane had not altogether liked the look of Skene and West when they turned up at his North Norfolk cottage and made him an offer he could not refuse, but his chequered past had long since taught him not to be particular. Down on his luck since 18, when he was picked up on Liverpool Street Station by the decidedly odd Heathcliff, Crane promptly teamed up with a young thief named Charlie Green. Only when he fell in love with Penelope was there any hope of going straight. And perhaps he would have stuck to his promise if the chance of making a million had not, as it were, dropped into his lap.

    ok
Crane will lift your reading experience to great heights
Parents killed in a car crash, raised by relations who saw him more as a burden, Paul Crane leaves for London as soon as he turns 18. At Liverpool Street station, Crane is approached by a man, Mr Heathcliff, who offers to look after him and rent him a room at Letterby House. There he meets Charlie Green slightly younger than himself who tells him all about the dreaded place which is Letterby House. The two become friends and partners in crime and decide they will voyage out into the world together. This novel is the story of Crane's life as he grows up and as an adult. It is a gripping, thrilling tale let down a bit by the ending which is why I only rated it four and a half stars instead of five. This is easily Pattinson's greatest novel.

There were five dead men in the cabin of the boat, lying under six fathoms of Caribbean water. But the men had not been drowned: they had been shot through the head at close range. John Fletcher had gone down to photograph a sunken ship, but he took photographs of the boat and its cargo of dead men instead. Soon he is having trouble with the island police, some men from President Clayton Rodgers' private army of thugs and two CIA agents. Now Fletcher wishes he had followed his first impulse and said nothing to anyone....

1977 Pattinson Novel, Not as Good as Most of His Other Work
John Fletcher's long search in the Caribbean for a ship sunk during a war long ago finally pays off and he is ecstatic with the quality of the wreck, the preservation of hole from the torpedo and other subject matter he is eager to photograph. He is also very surprised to find a much smaller boat resting on top of the wreck, especially so as there are no barnacles or other tell tale signs which indicates the boat has only recently sunk. The small boat is called the Spanish Hawk and upon closer investigation he comes across five bodies, yet to decay or be munched on by creatures of the sea, it is also obvious they have all been shot in the head.
Against the advice from the family he is staying with he goes to the local police and reports what he has found. He neglects to mention he photographed the wreck after being amazed that the police seem to want to take no action and warn him against telling anyone else. Soon the police discover the photographs, and they as well as other parties have become interested in him. One of these parties offers to pay for him to leave the Caribbean and forget what he has found. It soon becomes apparent that he should have taken up that offer.
James Pattinson writes in an old man style where his characters use words that show Pattinson is obviously from a previous generation and not quite down with the lingo of today, but this style does add something unique and enjoyable to his novels. Other great Pattinson novels worth checking out are Feast of the Scorpion, Avenger of Blood, Blind Date, Homecoming, The Silent Voyage, Skeleton Island, The Time of Your Life, Away With Murder, The Murmansk Assignment, Obituary for Howard Grey, Crane, The Animal Gang, Spoilers, The Golden Reef, A Car for Mr Bradley, Bavarian Sunset, The Sinister Stars, Fat Man from Colombia, the Spayde Conspiracy and Life Preserver.

    Members Reviews:
Sequel to Contact Mr Delgado But You Don't Need to Have Read That
The Liberators picks up whereContact Mr Delgadoleft off, without giving any of that novel away, basically the main character from that one, British hard man for hire Harvey Landon needs to leave the US city he is in, and fast. However he's only got $7 dollars in his pocket, and knows the police are going to want to talk to him about what when on board a ship he arrived on a day or two ago. Landon is surprised to find a tough looking guy knows who he is, even more that his employer wants to see him. With really no good alternative options, Landon decides to meet with the man. Landon is offered a way out of the US as well as $500 cash (a lot more money obviously back in 1961), all he has to do is deliver a passenger to the Central American country of Anagua. Landon knows this won't be as simple as stated, but really he need to leaves the country.
You don't need to have read Contact Mr Delgado to understand or enjoy The Liberators, however Pattinson does give away some of the key happenings in the previous novel so if you plan to read that book as well, you're best to read it first. This 1961 published story is a better novel than that one written two years earlier and Pattinson seven years later would bring Harvey Landon back a third time withLast Stronghold. I actually didn't realise this was a sequel when I started reading it until I found some of the past events Landon was referring to sounded awfully familiar. So if you have bought this book without knowing so, you'll read it as if it's a standalone. Landon is also very similar to most of Pattinson's main characters. So much so I actually was feeling the whole, been there read this before vibe, but I was pleasantly surprised when the novel takes two right angle turns, the first about half way through with challenges for the main character I hadn't experienced before in a Pattinson book, which ultimately made this one of his favourites for me.

The search for Arnie Walker was not a job that Sam Grant was particularly keen to undertake. But Miss Gloriana Goldstar was so pressing in her demand that he should do so that it became impossible to refuse.
A trip to Amsterdam seemed a pleasant enough prospect but when there are people there intent on bringing your life to an abrupt end, the experience becomes rather less than enjoyable. All he was doing was trying to find Mr Walker and urge him to return to Miss Goldstar's loving arms. How was he to foresee that, in the process, he would upset so many other people and with such deadly consequences?
    Members Reviews:
Go buy Crane or The Animal Gang instead
This is an average book by Pattinson's standards. It is very predictable, however it is enjoyable enough to pass the time if you need something to read on a plane or something. Pattinson has written much better than this, read The Animal Gang or Crane instead or at least first.
In this book ex-cop Sam Grant is now a private eye. He doesn't have a lot of work coming his way so he reluctantly accepts an assignment from a Miss Gloria Goldstar to find a man named Arnie Walker who has disappeared. Simultaneously a gang of four calling themselves the Musketeers is robbing and torturing the rich. Others are also looking for Arnie such as Alfred Stang and they want him dead.
