The kidnapping of a diplomat's wife leads Castillo to the Oil For Food scandal

Iâve read various books in Griffinâs âPresidential Agentâ series, but Iâve read them out of order. I wish Iâd read this one in its proper place, number two, because it explains how Charley Castillo goes from his first-book exploit recovering a stolen 727 from terrorists, to becoming head of a secret team, how he assembles it, and the back stories of many of the characters. A lot of that wasnât apparent to me earlier.

It also has tremendous background on the Oil-For-Food scandal. With Iraqi oil embargoed in the 1990s, Saddam Hussein was allowed to use some oil to barter for food and medicine in a UN program. The program instead became massively corrupt, as Hussein used oil to buy friends at the UN by making them rich, with UN officials themselves heavily implicated in it. They took bribes to look the other way as huge amounts of oil were smuggled illegally out of the country.

Back to this book: When the wife of the number two American diplomat in Buenos Aires is kidnapped, there are no leads. Fearing slow movement and ass-covering by the bureaucracies involves, the president asks Castillo, still a Special Forces major but now also a deputy to the secretary of Homeland Security, to go there and take charge of the investigation. Castillo, with little background in this type of investigation, is sent into the situation over the heads of nearly everyone â the US ambassador, the Argentine security forces, the FBI and CIA â and where they are now potential enemies who may block his work. He must make them his allies, while trying to make sense of a baffling situation and forestalling â unsuccessfully â subsequent attacks. His charm, savvy and ability to think on his feet â plus his independent wealth, multiple identities and languages, and the many organizational hats he wears (heâs quickly sworn in as a Secret Service agent) â allow him to make his way.

The situation worsens when the diplomat himself is killed trying to ransom his wife.

Couldn't put it down

What a fun read! Good Would make a great movie. I also recommend the first in the series - The Shill.

Just keeps getting better!

What a blast! I've been waiting for part two and it did not disappoint. Still the same really well-crafted, fast-paced noir story, this time set in Florida and on Turks and Caicos. Again, it seems the writer really knows his locales. I got a great picture of sunny, touristy, yet somewhat seedy backdrops, filled with very shady characters. (I love Buddy - he's scary and hilarious!) And in the middle of it all is Jane, our less-than-perfect heroine. She's a wonderful character - smart and slippery - and she will not be stopped! Which is good, because there's obviously a lot of her story left to tell. Keep it coming!

I read the first in this series THE SHILL, and this picks up where that one left off, an enjoyable, page-turning read that moves with both pace and suspense. Nice surprises as the history our characters are revealed. It all kicks up a notch for Jane, our actress amateur detective, is hell-bent on revenge. Recommend the series.

Once again, filled with an engaging plot and leaving you considering the twist after finishing the final pages, Kill the Shill is a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Terrific Trilogy Comes to an End

Book 3 of this fantastic trilogy starts off right where book 2 ends and it is just so much fun! Jane, our heroine, is back with more adventures - or should I say misadventures - and the action is really non-stop. Jane is constantly getting herself into nasty situations and, although sometimes I just want to shake her, still I'm with her all the way. I think that's because Shepphird has such a wonderful voice for this kind of fiction - low-down and sinister - and when he writes about Jane's motivations, they make sense to me in a crazy way. He's equally good at describing location (most of the action in Beware The Shill takes place in the scenic towns along California's Route 1) and even giving us a bit of pirate history! My only complaint might be that the ending was a bit abrupt. Or maybe I just want the story to continue...

The Shill wraps up with a knockout!

Beware the Shill is âunputdownableâ This is a juggernaut of action, intrigue and mystery until the very last page.

The conclusion of the Shill-trilogy delivers a satisfying ending that stays with you long after reading the final chapter, an exceptional thriller series shot full of the evil-that-men and women-do that commands attention. For those many of you who have read the first two books of the trilogy, I would wholeheartedly recommend finishing the series with Beware the Shill to find out just where story ends. And for those who have yet to experience the dark and twisty world of The Shill, I would recommend the trilogy. Delightfully delicious.

Fun, fast-paced, short novel

Very fun book! Just moves right along at a quick pace with hardly a break in the action. Enough shady characters and twists so that you are not quite sure where it will go next. This is the third part of the trilogy, and it wraps up the story nicely.

Every mystery novel fan will love it !
