    Title: Crossing the Meadow
    Author: Kfir Luzzatto
    Narrator: Craig Randall Nickerson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-06-16
    Publisher: PINE TEN, LLC
    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
A strange nightmare, a young woman in a foggy city, and a body buried underneath a bathtub. A little girl who can see her dead cat, an old blind woman, and a beautiful girl who died too young. They don't know what awaits them beyond that meadow, but they are determined to find out....
Crossing the Meadow guides you into the twilight zone, where dead people brush silently past the living ones and, often without noticing, affect their fate. Warning: Your perception of the space around you will never again be the same!

    What dreams may come
At first, you'd think it was a love story; the man, George, meets the beautiful girl, Clara, in a cafe, while he's on a trip back to his old hometown. They hit it off beautifully.
Then it seems to be a ghost story, as George and Clara are revealed to be spirits, their souls united, not by passion, but by mystery. A mystery that, in its seperate ways, has haunted each of them: Clara with a desire to know the truth of her death, an event no spirit can ever know, while George's almost equally intense desire to remain ignorant of that very same truth nearly overwhelms his own curiosity. It is Clara's drive to knowledge that propels the story, clinging to George for her precious, fading humanity, even as she coldly, almost ruthlessly, uses the living and dispatches of the dead who get in her way. But if Clara is the spirit of the book, George is its body, his own desire for peace leading him away from Clara to an exploration of the world he now inhabits, especially those who inhabit it with him.
For the true focus of the book is an examination, remarkably tender and often ironic, of the nature of humanity once the tedious business of living is removed. The burdens of life are great, and it is no surprise that the living fare poorly in this world. Yet the confusions and choices of life live on, and the realm of the dead is populated by those who are not free of them, those who are not ready, or occasionally not willing, to cross the meadow into whatever--heaven, nirvana, or perhaps oblivion--may lay beyond. George moves with them and among them, torn between his past and his present until a chance encounter clarifies his mind and he does what he must.
So, if the question is, is Crossing the Meadow a love story, an occult mystery, or a deeply human study of living and being, my answer is: Yes.

Huh? I must have missed something, because I didn't get the point of this story at all. Good writing, and I've enjoyed numerous tales by Mr. Wilson, but this was a miss for me.

Cannot wait to read the next in series!
Cannot wait to read book 2!!!
A friend of mine recommended this book to me and I was so glad she did. I love stories about ghosts and haunted houses...and this novel delivers a scary tale that is a page turner. Its about a young couple that buy a home in a small town. It is their dream home and they get it for a good price...and there's a reason for that...the house has had many owners...few lasting no more than months...that's because the house is haunted by a very angry Indian chief who wants all "white" men off his land. This story is full of interesting characters that the writer develops at a nice even pace. She does not introduce a character that is not integral to the plot...which I like...the book draws you in immediately...and sets the scene with vivid imagery that puts you right there. There is amazing detail...the setting and surrounding nature are described perfectly....not over done, if you know what I mean...she doesn't take an entire chapter to describe something...its just enough to give you a true sense of place without being heavy handed. I felt the writer really knew how to build suspense throughout the book...the story unfolds at a nice pace and I was wanting to read more and more...I read it in two days! I was riveted by the story and the characters are very real...there is also an element of the past with themes of hauntings...unsettled spirits...friendship...and protection...there were parts of the story that literally gave me the chills and the hair on my arms stood up...it is very well written and has just the right amount of scare/spooky factor...not campy at all...but suspenseful and thoroughly enjoyable. This is the first in a series and I will definitely read the next book...cannot wait to see what happens!
    Highly recommend this book!!!
    An unusual and unsettling story
I was pleasantly surprised by this paranormal thriller that is partly based on fact. The embellishments are intricately weaved throughout the story and it is difficult to ascertain where the facts stops and the fiction begins. The book is unsettling, creepy and surprisingly poignant. I found it difficult to put the book down at times though I was cringing. The author is a master at building suspense and painting an immersive and intense world in the Deep South.

3 and a half stars for this cool horror/detective hybrid
Robert Weinberg has been nominated for the Hugo and the Balrog and is a two-time winner of the World Fantasy Award, as well as the recipient of a Bram Stoker Award, so it sucks that he's only written 16 full-length novels. I've enjoyed his light fantasy series (A Logical Magician and A Calculated Magic) and his classic horror The Devil's Auction is one my all-time favorites.
The Black Lodge (first published in 1991) is an urban horror/occult tale that part-times as a detective story. It showcases Sid Taine as the tarot-reading shamus and introduces a supporting character that is later incarnated in a different literary format. The story starts when Taine is hired by a rich, beautiful woman (of course) to look into her husband's shady association with a sinister society called the Black Lodge. But as Taine doggedly chases down his leads, elsewhere in the city, a faceless entity known as the Dark Man is hunting down and butchering more than a few lowlife characters. Are these bloody murders connected to Taine's case? Well...yes. The tension mounts as the Dark Man gets closer and closer to possibly violently doing away with the core cast while Taine and friends attempt to make sense of the case's murkiness and also find a way to defeat their seemingly all-powerful adversaries. It all boils down to a confrontation with the entire Black Lodge in the somewhat exciting finale. But that's all I'll say about the plot.
As a horror novel and for sheer entertainment value, the Black Lodge pales in comparison with the Devil's Auction, but then again, I hold the latter in very high regard. But, still, the Black Lodge doesn't lack for scary, diabolical fun. Most of the plot takes place in the cold, mean streets of Chicago and involves quite a few criminal scums-of-the-earth, thus flavoring the horror theme with a certain seedy urban element. The Dark Man is an unstoppable force of evil and, reading on, I wondered with dreadful anticipation how, or even if, the key characters will escape his relentless pursuit. The story is tautly written. Mr. Weinberg certainly knows how to amp up the suspense. He also goes into some details about the particulars of voodoo, several ancient European orders and satanism.

Magical Detective story with a twist
I enjoy all of Robert Weinberg's books. They each have an original premise of suspense and occult horror. I think that in between the story lines he was letting the reader know how the intentional or subconscious manipulation of knowledge, science and magic can assist humanity or create monsters, and keeping the balance is key to his main characters. Have read many of his books, and have many to go.
    Five Stars
    Great book
Egyptian sorcery makes for great horror!
If you love the work of Tim Powers, and specifically The Anubis Gates, you might well enjoy this cinematic horror romp that functions almost like a photographic negative of The Anubis Gates. You may remember that The Anubis Gates is one of the foundational novels of "steampunk" (no, really, look it up) and that it involves time travel, Victorian London, body-switching, and Egyptian magic. Here we have its opposite, a novel about a modern-day (late 90s) domestic terrorist/white supremacist type who is contacted through his dreams by a long-dead Egyptian sorcerer, subsequently raised from his stasis because he promises to help bring about the terrorist's agenda. Of course, the sorcerer has his own agenda and he's using the supremacist group for his own ends -- revenge that may bring about the end of the world. Throw in a museum archivist who's more capable in Egyptian magic than it would appear, a lovelorn part-time Mossad agent, a couple of long-suffering but open-minded cops, various thugs and killers, a bunch of murdered corpses who give the sorcerer "vessels" to walk around in, and a fair amount of very imaginative but straightforward horror... and you have Bob Weinberg's The Dead Man's Kiss... the kind of novel anyone who loves Egyptian themes and magic in their horror will absolutely enjoy. I know I did, twice: back in the day, and on a recent reread.

What did you love best about Screams!?
A harrowing story and a very dramatic reading.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the second story the most. The writing was very good.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The narrator was very dramatic and the reading was very smooth, clear and full of emotion. There were some distracting mouth clicks and background noise, but after the first few minutes, I got used to it.
If you could rename Screams!, what would you call it?
The stories didn't necessarily make me scream, but they did make me feel quite terrified - perhaps something along those lines.
    Any additional comments?
Don't listen to these alone at night.
